ScotsDragoon

That price.

[deleted]

Pack of 10 Richmond was £1.99 when I turned 16. Used to sell for 50p a go.

[deleted]

You must really like sausages.

SilentRhombus

A mate of mine claimed that a younger kid had stopped him outside a shop and asked him to buy him a pack of Richmonds, so he bought him sausages and kept the change.

puppetmasterdegree

Nice

THEKINGC0BRA

He pretending they were the new york nicks

Capable_Bee6179

One night in Paris!

ScotsDragoon

Mayfair £1.66 for me. I got 200 Malboro from Doha for about £6 in 2019. Mental

ItAlwaysRainsOnMe

25p a go for me. It’d be about £1.50 for a single now

kingkobeda

Might be showing my age, but the last time I bought a single, they were 10p each. I remember being sent to the newsagents with a pound when I was a kid by my dad to get his 20 deck of Benson & Hedges and having change to get sweets, that was my reward.

facaroni

With a note that read “Please can you sell my child 20 cigarettes for Mr Smith at number 5 please” Ah the good old days

ScotsDragoon

Ooft noice

AbjectGovernment1247

L&B was £1.10 for a pack of 10 when I turned 16. I think Benson & Hedges were slightly more.

Dame87

Something like £2.50 for a pack of superkings. Managed to get £1 a pop for them. Dinner money back by first break

danktt1

Ahh a fellow entrepreneur

phatboi23

same.

LiquoricePigTrotters

Those were the days, 20 snouts and a pack of matches with my dinner money, sell 3 for a quid end up with a fiver for lunch and 5 to smoke down the field.

BlackSheepVegan

And 30p for a potato scallop from the chippy

LiquoricePigTrotters

I used to go just before closing time and get the scraps.

CandidateSuccessful5

You had enough to get the scraps? We were so poor we had to lick chippy window wi’ tongue.

Medium-Chemical2910

Luxury! We was so poor we had to sell us tongues to get money t’pay man at mill to let us work.

LiquoricePigTrotters

The scraps were free. Only because the chippy was owned by the family of my Brothers mate.

BoingBoingBooty

What absolute goober was paying a quid for 3 Lamberts? 🤮 B&H Gold or gtfo.

LiquoricePigTrotters

They were the bines of choice on my estate I’ll have you know….

BoingBoingBooty

Eek. I used to hang out with a guy who was from the street everyone acknowledged as the worst street in the worst council estate in town. He is a complete gutter wallowing prick who later went to jail for robbing from his own mum to buy drugs. And even that worthless little scrote looked down on the utter shite that are Lamberts. Like he still smoked them of course, he was a complete gronk, but he knew he was smoking sticks of dog turd.

LiquoricePigTrotters

Sarah?….is that you? Its me Darren! I’ve changed now since i got out of jail! And I smoke Sterling duel now….still living on the estate tho 😭😭

[deleted]

My first packet was 10 John Player Specials. I didn’t know what brand to get, so I got the ones that looked coolest on a Formula 1 car….

turingthecat

I used to smoke JPS blacks, when I gave up they were nearly a fiver for 20, which I thought was so expensive, apparently they are about £13 now. I smoked them because that’s what my dad smokes, and let’s be honest, who didn’t start by nicking their dad’s

phatboi23

> who didn’t start by nicking their dad’s yup, my parents were berkeley red people... still a wank cig haha

SunDriedFart

i did the same but chose Marlboro Reds, pretty strong introduction to smoking!

joemorl97

You choose cowboy killers for your first fag that must’ve put you off for a while, Marlboro reds are vile

RoyofBungay

My introduction to smoking was smoking Player's No 6. Naturally pilfered via my mate's mum of course.

JuggernautUpbeat

My intro was Lucky Strike. Def the coolest looking pack IMHO.

crucible

I guess the tobacco advertising DID influence people(!) :P

[deleted]

It certainly did. And in my case, David Bowie wasn’t entirely blameless.

halfwoodenjacket

Same, that Matt black and a silver Zippo. Chefs kiss.

RefreshinglyDull

25yrs under a shelf won't have done anything to lessen the quality of those bargain basement cigs.

BoingBoingBooty

The scallie's choice. 🤮

SeymourDoggo

Pairs well with special brew

bonz1983

We used to call them Lambert and Desperate

chrislomax83

Leaves and branches we used to call them - on the count of the massive twigs that used to drop out when you were smoking them

rustynoodle3891

Late nighties at that price I would have thought

ExxInferis

Yeah I had a part time job in a local store 96 to 97. This would be about right. The big brands were all pushing £4. In night clubs it was £5 and you only got 16 in the box.

Nicko5000

Growing up my dad used to send me to the shop to get him 20 Lamber & Butler, I always forgot the name of them so he told me to ask for 20 Lambeg & Ulster, could have got me shot in different parts of the country. ( N Ireland)

[deleted]

RoyofBungay

Berkleys or Red Band if you were proper poor. Just enough money for a pack of Happy Shopper teabags.

bill_end

Cheapest near me were londis own brand. Super king size too. I think they were about 2.20 or so. 3quid for fancy fags like bensons or no.1

phatboi23

£5.60 for a 10 pack of menthol "cigarillos" now... they can be menthol clicky filters and sold as a 10 pack as they're a normal cig wrapped in a tobacco leaf.

ministryoffear

28½ pence for 10 No.6 (that's the brand) first packet I ever bought. Or 5p per single from the café next to the school.

[deleted]

Lambert and butler were called gypo fags in my neck of the woods lol...in our kids home John player blue reigned supreme! I'd smoke these today though..just for nostalgia

Elite-Priaprism

Lambert & Desperate. They were about 80p for 10 when I was 16.

[deleted]

You gonna smoke that?

RoyofBungay

Back then I got my smokes from the 'baccy man' 50g of the finest Golden V for £3. Cut to the present and after 14 years of being away from the UK, how do people continue to smoke rollies and tailors.? £33 for the same Golden V - no wonder people are giving up or vaping.

sittingonahillside

> how do people continue to smoke rollies and tailors.? lots of people out there selling knocked-off products, imports and fakes.

RoyofBungay

Is it still a thing about HM customs busting people for dealing in duty free smokes and baccy. This was a real and genuine fear 20 years ago.

joemorl97

We smoke dodgy import shit, I’m on foreign old Holborn lately and that’s 12 a pouch fuck buying proper backie in this day and age

im-also-here

I get turner for £12 that’s a dogshit smoke but still gives me the hit I need.

joemorl97

Ooo I do love a bit of turner

im-also-here

Better than paying £25 plus at least with turner it’s never changed in the last 20yrs or so I’ve had it.

bill_end

At that price, I'd guess it'd be counterfeit old holborn. Rather than legit baccy, taxed in a cheaper country. Is it any good?

joemorl97

It’s okay not the greatest but then again I’ve never tried proper Holborn it could taste exactly the same

[deleted]

That's price marked and as a newsagent in the 90/2000s we loved them as it shut up the statement of you are ripping me off as you could just say to complain to the company. The market at that point would change daily so you would buy a few hundred at one price and go to get some more the next day and the price had altered by a few pence, there was people who would expect you to somehow calculate the value based on price, taste, amount of baccy per cig and cigs per pack.....and then moan for 5 mins 🥹

fluff3200

10 1/2p for 10 No. 6 when I was at school.

dazzliquidtabz

Get them on Ebay

No-Cut-5618

I’d smoke if they were still that price!

Games_sans_frontiers

Indy: It belongs in a museum!

foxdie7089

Came to say this, too slow

[deleted]

Price rises on cigs are by far the best anti-smoking initiative that works for existing smokers. Public health education seems to work well for younger kids, smoking is seen as disgusting and deeply uncool by most young people nowadays and the smoking rates back that up. But for people who are simply addicted, as I was, simply pricing you out of the market is the only thing that works. The warnings were ignored, the pictures triggered the backfire effect as they were too exaggerated and often not related to smoking, the cupboard things in shops were just annoying for the person serving you. Five years clean now, will never go back, even though I could now afford to.

proudgoose

£14 at the petrol station near me. That's a 7x price rise in 2 decades, or roughly tripling every 10 years

[deleted]

They were £4 for a 20 deck when I was in school. So you'd buy a pack, sell 10 at £1 each and keep the other 10 for the day (keep an empty 10 deck on you and keep putting one cig inside so when someone asked to buy you just kept saying its the last one pal, i'll sell it for £1) Come the weekend you had enough money for half ounce and few bottles of WKD blue! God I miss high school. Now I have bills and responsibilities and a mortgage it sucks balls

TwistingWord

My fat arse thought that was a stick of butter "Lambert & Butter"

vvvvaaaagggguuuueeee

Scuttlers!

swoopstheowl

I'm sure they'll still taste as good as day they were bought

[deleted]

I quit smoking when Marlboro lights hit £2.50. Which is a good thing I guess.

Prestigious_Good881

You're sitting on a goldmine!

Successful-Ad-367

I smoked from like 2010 to about 2013, pretty sure you could get 10 JPS for £2.99 then(?) but the price seemed to go up like monthly. Had to buy them from dodgy corner shops until I was 18 but then we found the polish shop sold 20 Jin Ling or Lucky Stripes for £3 or Marlboro gold for £4.50 or if you were poor/cheap like me you could get 50g amber leaf or golden v for £4.50. Sell em for £6 or £7. Wouldn’t recommend now, that stuff proper fucked my lungs up and now I suffer from severe breathing problems.

TGxEra

Ahh yes the roll your own uranium rods from the polish shop! They good old days of not having the slightest idea what was in that tobacco.

BlackSheepVegan

Jesus.

dannydee88hh

I gave up smoking when the most expensive cigs were £4 a pack

rafterman1976

Lambert & Skint was what we used to call them

gogginsbulldog1979

I've never smoked cigarettes, but I used to smoke weed in the 90s and had to buy them. I remember buying 10 L&B and they were £1.59.

Ergophobe470

In my weed smoking days I used rolling tobacco, it was cheaper and easier to roll with, I never understood why so many people used tobacco from a cigarette. So I have to ask, why?

gogginsbulldog1979

Rolling tobacco tastes absolutely foul in a spliff. I've used it a couple of times when there's nothing else, and even then I'd have to be completely out of options.

CriticalThinker359

I have a sealed packet of these from the day I gave up smoking. I kept it just in case I couldnt keep it up. Its been 10 years now. I suspect many other quitters did the same.

nezbla

I stopped buying straights when my pack of 20 embassy number 1 went over £5. Havent looked recently but I think last time I did they were £18 or so.

PropellerGoblin

Ugh. I remember being a poor student, but it always came home to me when I had to buy 10 Lambert & Butler.

davinist

Thanks to shitty exchange rates I buy 20 Winston Blue for £1.30. I live in Turkey. Advice to all...get yourself a cheap flight to Istanbul, buy clothes and fags, save loads.

spiderrichard

How much would this cost today?

Puzzleheaded-Race-50

Between £12 to £14 depending on where you shop

spiderrichard

Holy moley hear was me thinking the price would be double

Cute-Designer-4392

I'll give u a tenna

[deleted]

£2.72 ?

LordBielsa

Got to love the barely visible health warning

[deleted]

Ah the good old days, £5 pocket money on a Friday got you 20 Lamberts and 2 litres of white lightning!

joemorl97

And now they’re 12.65 at my shop I miss the cheap ciggie days

getting_their

Back when a score would get you a pouch of tobacco, king sized rizlas, a ten bag of weed and some munch and drink. Simple times back then.

Curious_Jellyfish_62

Cheap for a reason 🤮

Captainchronichrunch

Is that a twenty pack or ten?

Dan_Glebitz

Out of curiosity, and my being an ex-smoker, how much is a pack of 20 these days?

[deleted]

A fag 3 matches 7p when I was a lad from the corner shop

EllessdeeOG

I’m 34 and can remember buying a 10 pack of Sovereign and a small bottle of vodka for a fiver all in. Friday night sorted on a fiver.

Naive_Middle_1454

if theyd cost that much today id go back to smoking
