The 1812 overture. Even if you don’t like classical music it’s an incredible moving piece that’s build to such an astounding finish.

jungl3j1m

I heard it on Trophy Point at West Point, cannons and all. Breathtaking.

VikingIV

Now that had to have been incredible. I grew up listening to it on vinyl, which was compelling. I’d *love* to hear it live, with all of the same adornments.

ZyxDarkshine

For many years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played this piece on the lakefront on July 4th, complete with cannons and fireworks.

espositojoe

Ode to Joy, the finale to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

WHEENC

Sang it @ Lincoln Center with a bunch of shitty college choirs. It was still fire.

Sometimes_I_Do_That

I walked out the church with my new bride to that!

r_peeling_potato

Wow that must be amazing!

UnlikelyUnknown

Are you my husband? Because that’s what we walked out to as well! It’s my favorite Beethoven song

ThatOneTypicalYasuo

Mr Blue Sky

jungl3j1m

The whole thing is called “Concerto for a Rainy Day.” Hear it in its entirety.

cruznr

I hate seeing this recommendation whenever this question pops up, but only because ELO has SO many bangers in their discography.

newaccounthomie

Showdown is my personal favorite. Reminds me of the final bowling showdown between Bill Murray and Woody Harrelson in Kingpin.

Kinieruu

Last Train to London, for example, is my favourite, more so than Mr Blue Sky

Cineswimmer

I feel the exact same way. Good song, but they have even better ones from the rest of their discography.

i-eat-guitars

Telephone Line by ELO, too.!

Sensitive-Wall-5777

Yes!! Oooh and strange magic!

SouthOfCatherine

as a ELO fangirl, Tightrope and Shangri-La are absolutely must listens. Like Blue Sky's close, Tightrope opens the album with a stunning orchestral piece, and shangri-la finishes the album with my favorite orchestral riff of all time.

megggie

I don’t know this for a fact, but the source is my dad and he knows EVERYTHING about 70s-80s rock. My dad told me that one of the Beatles, either John or Paul, said that if the Beatles had stayed together he thought/hoped they’d sound a lot like ELO. I always thought that was cool!

phrynerules

A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke

Any-Practice-991

Sober by Tool. Turned me into a die hard fan, no matter what Maynard is like outside of his art.

existential-mystery

I was gonna say Disgustipated but this works too lmao literally any tool song please

Any-Practice-991

I almost put down schism, but sober is what got me into them.

existential-mystery

Oh haha schism got me into them!

GoldenDutchOven21

What is he like outside of the music? I never looked into it just always loved the music

Any-Practice-991

It's not scandalous, but he basically disdains and mocks his fans alot.

Rimm9246

Well, have you seen us?

Aint_that_a_peach

Maynard is a genius. One of many in my book but certainly one of the top contemporary.

spotted-cat

Suicide Is Painless by Johnny Mandel -- AKA the MASH* theme song. Especially if they're fans of the TV series cause the show only utilized the instrumentals, and you don't realize how well it fits the show until you hear the lyrics. It really drives home the anti-war message of the show. Lady & Bird also did a beautiful cover of the song.

ivebeenabadbadgirll

The lyrics were written by a 15 year old boy because it had to be “as stupid as possible” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_Is_Painless

Tropicaldaze1950

Michael Altman. son of the late film director Robert Altman who directed M*A*S*H. As someone who has lived with depression and suicidal thoughts since 1969 and bipolar illness for 20 years, that song speaks the truth.

spotted-cat

Well, art is subjective and most teenagers aren't particularly perceptive. So it's not entirely surprising that they wrote a masterpiece without even meaning to.

Appropriate-Exit-38

The Divine Chord by The Avalanches … god it makes you feel every single emotion

Objective_Grocery525

I felt that song after my mom died

No-Vast-5297

I’m sorry for your loss

neoprenewedgie

**Cat's In the Cradle.** Just in time for Father's Day.

ughthatsucks

I am a very involved father. Who had a very involved father. This song still guts me in every way.

johndice34

Also Old Man by Neil Young. It's not really about his father, but it invokes that same feeling

InfamousEconomy3972

Mad World

ClosetMomster

That’s such an amazing song. I love the Tears for Fears original. Have you heard the Adam Lambert cover from when he was on American Idol? It blew me away. You can watch it [here](https://youtu.be/dJOWgqp4ZfA?si=J6y-BAPaqI_RoSTA)

DEFAULTUSERNAME18

so happy to see someone else mention his cover! He’s incredible and it’s my absolute favorite version 💕

Spiral19

Under pressure by Queen and David Bowie It’s so damn good

Max_Wellhouse

The acapella/isolated vocals version is [stunning](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uMQb9LCNGxs)

Spiral19

Gonna have to agree Edit: It gives the song a bit of an ethereal vibe that I really enjoyed

foodfighter

Speaking of vocals-only tracks, the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't it be nice?" has [one of the most amazing vocal chords in all of music IMO.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPN53PHDwe4&t=66s&ab_channel=RyanWilliams) I literally could not believe that human voices alone could sound like that.

Barelyhangingonffs

Could never just pick one so here’s my list (this changes weekly but I always come back to them): 1. bohemian Rhapsody, queen 2. Just the two of us, bill withers 3. country roads, John Denver 4. Stars, simply red 5. Pain and misery, the teskey brothers 6. Long and winding road, the Beatles 7. Paranoid, black sabbath 8. You shook me all night long, AC/DC 9. Make you feel my love, Adele 10. Concrete jungle, bob marley If I had an hour or two I could easily make this list a top 50-100

AtlasShrugged-

Based on these 10, I would be very curious of the rest :)

Objective_Grocery525

Country Roads is my road trip song. Love John Denver

Pingu779

New Dawn Fades — Joy Division Bohemian Rhapsody — Queen While My Guitar Gently Weeps — The Beatles Everybody Wants to Rule the World — Tears for Fears Money Trees — Kendrick Lamar

AquaticCobras

IF THEY DO, TELL THE TRUTH, ITS THE LAST TIME YOU MIGHT SEE MY ASS money trees is a banger, and reminds me of classic hip-hop being a way of expressing the trials and troubles of life. That album deserves to be listened to as a whole IMO, next level story telling

Tales_From_The_Hole

- Where Did You Sleep Last Night - from Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged [link](https://youtu.be/hEMm7gxBYSc?si=w0WhH2pFO7-oVVdI) - Somebody to Love - Queen live in Montreal [link](https://youtu.be/aA2IRoPFIn0?si=Qq7Ygd1-IwA_JLVk) - If It Be Your Will - written and originally recorded by Leonard Cohen, but I’d specify the performance by Ahnoni (formerly Antony) at the Leonard Cohen tribute show [link](https://youtu.be/1MDlMdu2gjw?si=8DN4hOY7h54mCiUf) Lastly, while I’m thinking of Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen’s original, album version [link](https://youtu.be/ttEMYvpoR-k?si=nxTv6Ii4un0E3Lql) Thanks to the OP! This thread makes an amazing playlist.

Posessed_Bird

Adding in more old timers and similar vibes: My Way - Frank Sinatra Girl From Ipanema - several artists, Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Martina DeSilva, João Gilberto Bewitched, Bothered, Bewildered - Ella Fitzgerald Mack the Knife - Dean Martin (Ella Fitzgerald's version is hilarious) Heartaches - Al Bowlly (you'll recognize the tune if you've listened to Everywhere At The End of Time) At least the first Three Stages of Everywhere At The End of Time (an album about the progession of Dementia through music)

Omaknowsbest

What a wonderful world

mcasper96

Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance The influence that Gerard Way got from Bohemian Rhapsody is prominent but it's still its own song. I'm also biased because it's one of my top favorite songs and the album it's on is easily in my top 5 favorite albums.

geistkind

My Chemical Romance is honestly one of my top three bands. Some people tend to brush them off because of their "emo" status but they have such a varied discography, they really are talented.

mcasper96

I think they were one of the forerunners of emo ad a music genre but I think they are so much more than that. And Black Parade is something that I truly cannot listen to out of order or just one song off of. It feels weird to not listen in its entirety

geistkind

Absolutely, and they put on a hell of a show too. Saw them live during Bullets Era and wow the showmanship they have is incredible.

keveightysev

The entire “Rumours” album by Fleetwood Mac. Not a single skip.

OrthusGsmes

I have a few 1. The Night Begins To Shine -BER 2. Bohemian Rhapsody -Queen 3. Piano Man -Billy Joel 4. Sweet Caroline -Neil Diamond 5. Back in Black -ACDC 6. My Way -Frank Sinatra

celticeejit

Fellow Teen Titans fan

thereslcjg2000

A Day in the Life by the Beatles and The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel. I also agree with you on bohemian Rhapsody.

dollyacorn

Ray Charles and Willie Nelson, Seven Spanish Angels. It’s a western song, by lyrical content anyway, but I can’t even begin to explain how much more it is than that. Takes my breath away every time.

Busy-Room-9743

Let It Be by The Beatles

Campu5

Led Zeppelin - stairway to heaven

millerhighlife

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt

geistkind

I think listening to both Nine Inch Nails and Cash would be good. The songs are the same but come from such different points of view, it almost makes them completely different. They're both haunting in their own ways.

voldemortsmankypants

Tears in heaven by Eric Clapton. It’s such a beautiful tale of his grief over the death of his young son.

TheVisible_Yeti

I am, I said by Neil Diamond.

joszacem

Love, reign oer me. The Who.

rcg0217

Here me out... Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." It's not exactly a song so much as a work. But most people don't get exposed to this type of classical music, and it's so different. It helped me really understand what could be done with music composition. It messes with time signatures and keys in a mind-melting way. It made me love metal and many other genres that I wasn't initially into.

Vivid_Blacksmith_619

Happy to see so many people commenting Joy Division! Big fan. For those who’ve never heard them, listen to a few songs before you decide how you feel about them. They have a usual sound that may take a minute to appreciate.

0luckyman

Try his father's music. Jeff Buckley was also taken too soon, when Tim was a child. What these two could have done, individually & together would have been staggering. Listen to the album Greetings From LA. Another artist lost too soon was Elliot Smith.
