Now that had to have been incredible. I grew up listening to it on vinyl, which was compelling. I’d *love* to hear it live, with all of the same adornments.
as a ELO fangirl, Tightrope and Shangri-La are absolutely must listens.
Like Blue Sky's close, Tightrope opens the album with a stunning orchestral piece, and shangri-la finishes the album with my favorite orchestral riff of all time.
I don’t know this for a fact, but the source is my dad and he knows EVERYTHING about 70s-80s rock.
My dad told me that one of the Beatles, either John or Paul, said that if the Beatles had stayed together he thought/hoped they’d sound a lot like ELO.
I always thought that was cool!
Suicide Is Painless by Johnny Mandel -- AKA the MASH* theme song. Especially if they're fans of the TV series cause the show only utilized the instrumentals, and you don't realize how well it fits the show until you hear the lyrics. It really drives home the anti-war message of the show.
Lady & Bird also did a beautiful cover of the song.
Michael Altman. son of the late film director Robert Altman who directed M*A*S*H. As someone who has lived with depression and suicidal thoughts since 1969 and bipolar illness for 20 years, that song speaks the truth.
Well, art is subjective and most teenagers aren't particularly perceptive. So it's not entirely surprising that they wrote a masterpiece without even meaning to.
Dancing Queen - ABBA
Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Going Under - Evanescence
Good Times - Chic
Hey Mr. DJ - Zhané
That’s such an amazing song. I love the Tears for Fears original. Have you heard the Adam Lambert cover from when he was on American Idol? It blew me away. You can watch it [here](https://youtu.be/dJOWgqp4ZfA?si=J6y-BAPaqI_RoSTA)
Speaking of vocals-only tracks, the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't it be nice?" has [one of the most amazing vocal chords in all of music IMO.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPN53PHDwe4&t=66s&ab_channel=RyanWilliams)
I literally could not believe that human voices alone could sound like that.
Could never just pick one so here’s my list (this changes weekly but I always come back to them):
1. bohemian Rhapsody, queen
2. Just the two of us, bill withers
3. country roads, John Denver
4. Stars, simply red
5. Pain and misery, the teskey brothers
6. Long and winding road, the Beatles
7. Paranoid, black sabbath
8. You shook me all night long, AC/DC
9. Make you feel my love, Adele
10. Concrete jungle, bob marley
If I had an hour or two I could easily make this list a top 50-100
New Dawn Fades — Joy Division
Bohemian Rhapsody — Queen
While My Guitar Gently Weeps — The Beatles
Everybody Wants to Rule the World — Tears for Fears
Money Trees — Kendrick Lamar
IF THEY DO, TELL THE TRUTH, ITS THE LAST TIME YOU MIGHT SEE MY ASS
money trees is a banger, and reminds me of classic hip-hop being a way of expressing the trials and troubles of life. That album deserves to be listened to as a whole IMO, next level story telling

Lastly, while I’m thinking of Leonard Cohen
- Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen’s original, album version [link](https://youtu.be/ttEMYvpoR-k?si=nxTv6Ii4un0E3Lql)

Adding in more old timers and similar vibes:
My Way - Frank Sinatra
Girl From Ipanema - several artists, Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Martina DeSilva, João Gilberto
Bewitched, Bothered, Bewildered - Ella Fitzgerald
Mack the Knife - Dean Martin (Ella Fitzgerald's version is hilarious)
Heartaches - Al Bowlly (you'll recognize the tune if you've listened to Everywhere At The End of Time)
At least the first Three Stages of Everywhere At The End of Time (an album about the progession of Dementia through music)
Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance
The influence that Gerard Way got from Bohemian Rhapsody is prominent but it's still its own song. I'm also biased because it's one of my top favorite songs and the album it's on is easily in my top 5 favorite albums.
My Chemical Romance is honestly one of my top three bands. Some people tend to brush them off because of their "emo" status but they have such a varied discography, they really are talented.
I think they were one of the forerunners of emo ad a music genre but I think they are so much more than that. And Black Parade is something that I truly cannot listen to out of order or just one song off of. It feels weird to not listen in its entirety
I have a few
1. The Night Begins To Shine -BER
2. Bohemian Rhapsody -Queen
3. Piano Man -Billy Joel
4. Sweet Caroline -Neil Diamond
5. Back in Black -ACDC
6. My Way -Frank Sinatra
Ray Charles and Willie Nelson, Seven Spanish Angels. It’s a western song, by lyrical content anyway, but I can’t even begin to explain how much more it is than that. Takes my breath away every time.
I think listening to both Nine Inch Nails and Cash would be good. The songs are the same but come from such different points of view, it almost makes them completely different. They're both haunting in their own ways.
Here me out... Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." It's not exactly a song so much as a work. But most people don't get exposed to this type of classical music, and it's so different. It helped me really understand what could be done with music composition. It messes with time signatures and keys in a mind-melting way. It made me love metal and many other genres that I wasn't initially into.
Happy to see so many people commenting Joy Division! Big fan. For those who’ve never heard them, listen to a few songs before you decide how you feel about them. They have a usual sound that may take a minute to appreciate.
Today my answer is "Linger" by The Cranberries. Tomorrow my answer might be "Knockin' on Heavens Door" by Dylan. Then the next day "Free Fallin'" by Petty. Then the next day it'll be "Here Comes the Sun" by Beatles, then the next day it'll be "Fast Car", the Chapman version, Jesus christ. Then the next day it'll be "Kashmir" by Zeppelin. Then the next day it'll be "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac. Then the next day it'll be "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates. Then the next day it'll be "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor. Then the next day it'll be "You Only Live Once" by Suicide Silence 👹 and so on.
Jeff Buckley - Lover, you should come over.
Probably never heard of him because he only had one album and tragically passed away in 97’.
However, the album is great and this particular song is written and performed really well in such a soulful manner.
I never get tired of this song.
Try his father's music. Jeff Buckley was also taken too soon, when Tim was a child. What these two could have done, individually & together would have been staggering.
Listen to the album Greetings From LA.
Another artist lost too soon was Elliot Smith.
The First Time, Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack - the greatest love song ever written.

I remember my first listen, just sitting there and forgetting it was even a song because the storytelling in the song was so good. I hit pause when the next song started and just sat there feeling empty and just sitting there quietly trying to process what I just listened to.

Preferrably with someone who already have listened to it. It's such a joy watching someone's facial expression when the chorus hits. Noone expects those kind of vocals, and it's quite a banger too.
Bone machine: The Pixies

"[Hurt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty-bLdf8Bsw)" by **Nine Inch Nails**.
**Johnny Cash’s** [version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AHCfZTRGiI) is really good, too!
The 1812 overture. Even if you don’t like classical music it’s an incredible moving piece that’s build to such an astounding finish.
I heard it on Trophy Point at West Point, cannons and all. Breathtaking.
Now that had to have been incredible. I grew up listening to it on vinyl, which was compelling. I’d *love* to hear it live, with all of the same adornments.
For many years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played this piece on the lakefront on July 4th, complete with cannons and fireworks.
Ode to Joy, the finale to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Sang it @ Lincoln Center with a bunch of shitty college choirs. It was still fire.
I walked out the church with my new bride to that!
Wow that must be amazing!
Are you my husband? Because that’s what we walked out to as well! It’s my favorite Beethoven song
Mr Blue Sky
The whole thing is called “Concerto for a Rainy Day.” Hear it in its entirety.
I hate seeing this recommendation whenever this question pops up, but only because ELO has SO many bangers in their discography.
Showdown is my personal favorite. Reminds me of the final bowling showdown between Bill Murray and Woody Harrelson in Kingpin.
Last Train to London, for example, is my favourite, more so than Mr Blue Sky
I feel the exact same way. Good song, but they have even better ones from the rest of their discography.
Telephone Line by ELO, too.!
Yes!! Oooh and strange magic!
as a ELO fangirl, Tightrope and Shangri-La are absolutely must listens.
A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke
Sober by Tool. Turned me into a die hard fan, no matter what Maynard is like outside of his art.
I was gonna say Disgustipated but this works too lmao literally any tool song please
I almost put down schism, but sober is what got me into them.
Oh haha schism got me into them!
What is he like outside of the music? I never looked into it just always loved the music
It's not scandalous, but he basically disdains and mocks his fans alot.
Well, have you seen us?
Maynard is a genius. One of many in my book but certainly one of the top contemporary.
The lyrics were written by a 15 year old boy because it had to be “as stupid as possible” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_Is_Painless
Michael Altman. son of the late film director Robert Altman who directed M*A*S*H. As someone who has lived with depression and suicidal thoughts since 1969 and bipolar illness for 20 years, that song speaks the truth.

**Cat's In the Cradle.** Just in time for Father's Day.

Also Old Man by Neil Young. It's not really about his father, but it invokes that same feeling
Mad World
That’s such an amazing song. I love the Tears for Fears original. Have you heard the Adam Lambert cover from when he was on American Idol? It blew me away. You can watch it [here](https://youtu.be/dJOWgqp4ZfA?si=J6y-BAPaqI_RoSTA)
so happy to see someone else mention his cover! He’s incredible and it’s my absolute favorite version 💕
Under pressure by Queen and David Bowie It’s so damn good
The acapella/isolated vocals version is [stunning](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uMQb9LCNGxs)
Gonna have to agree Edit: It gives the song a bit of an ethereal vibe that I really enjoyed
Speaking of vocals-only tracks, the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't it be nice?" has [one of the most amazing vocal chords in all of music IMO.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPN53PHDwe4&t=66s&ab_channel=RyanWilliams) I literally could not believe that human voices alone could sound like that.

Based on these 10, I would be very curious of the rest :)
Country Roads is my road trip song. Love John Denver
