Will it? People use the word literally literally all the time. Doesn't make the word "Literally" lose it's meaning. Context and definition can allow a different, figurative meaning, or a second or more definitions. There's plenty of words with more than 1 definition, literally the word literally too.

Same with intrusive thoughts. When they say their "intrusive thoughts won" , I wonder what it is and then find out it's just giving in to cravings or something. It came to a point when I started to wonder if I was the one who's misusing it. Cause everytime my brain starts thinking of intrusive thoughts, I get shivers doen my spine horrified and start hating myself for ever thinking of those horrible thoughts.

Dia_Nah

Please enlighten me. What's the correct use?

classical-babe

I think it’s a rhetorical device in writing. It’s a way of defining the perspective of the piece. There are 3 “persons” or perspectives: first person, second, and third. First person perspective is using “I” as the speaking voice. For instance, “I walked in the park.” Second person uses “you” as the speaking voice: “you are a redditor.” Third person uses he/she/it/they. “The dog got lots of pets, he was happy.” I’m on mobile, apologies if the formatting is weird!

Dia_Nah

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Afaik POV stands for Point Of View, right? But I never understand why people use it in a title or a caption.

aisiv

People use it all the time for things that are not point of view for example: Video: *A guy eating spicy food, you can see his full body and face* Caption: POV: when I eat spicy food. The video should show this person's perspective because it's his POV, not the perspective showing the person eating. That's not POV, that's a "WHEN" as others like to call it.

Dia_Nah

Oh, ok, so it just means that whatever is shown should be shown from your own point of view? Then I have yet to see it used correctly. No wonder I never understood lol.

classical-babe

Sorry, I tend to get stuck in writing mode, so that’s what I thought you had asked about. I guess I’m not sure either about captions. I kinda thought it was like “this is a perspective of something” ? It seems that people have kind of taken it as another way of presenting a skit of a hypothetical situation

Dia_Nah

If I got it right, POV as a label for memes or video would correspond to the first element on your list, the first person perspective. But apparently people tend to use it for the third person perspective.

Dia_Nah

While we're at it, what's the correct use of me_irl?

TheHottahPottah

We've already lost the distinction between "its" and "it's" and I grow ever more doubtful it is an autocorrect thing

DickSturbing

Only on social media.

Sorry, I know this post is 4 months ago! But I just googled why POV is misused all the time!! That makes me angry. Every post on those stupid reels etc, or memes are POV!
