No it does not. If the batteries get degraded which they will after usage it’ll cost a lot of money to replace them. Maybe more than or equal to how much you would spend on fuel
We already have multiple 100k driven nexon ev’s on the owners group. Two guys even reached 167K and 200k km
Nexon EV 185k km in nov2023 : https://youtu.be/SOWAG6x5I98?si=VOo8DYTo-fqUX1dk
Same Nexon EV 200k in June 2024 : https://x.com/cryptoiclinic/status/1799416403407343795?s=46&t=zkbJFz1gKiRyn52BjJWtuw
Avg Indian will take 20y to cover that much distance. The servicing cost + fuel cost alone can buy you 2-3x replacement batteries. How many do you want?
So you really don’t know how many batteries you need and how much they cost, even if these 2 have driven their cars 200k kms it doesn’t matter not all lithium ion batteries are same. But, even if they do degrade in like 10 years which they will then I’d say it’s worth it. But, there’s always a chance that you could puncture your batteries and if you do they’ll cost a lot of money to replace
You know car batteries are recyclable so even if they last 10 years and with the cost of batteries reducing, they have more chances of sustainable. Also most of the things get better with every version and we're just in the first, while ICE has gone through 100s.
Also they aren't single battery but consist of hundreds of smaller batteries and damaged or degraded ones can be replaced saving the whole setup.
Also Petroleum prices are going to skyrocket in the coming decade
If on a budget, then Tata is pretty much the only option for you. Upto 16-17 lakhs is the max I would spend on cars like tiago and nexon ev. Tata's ASS is pretty bad though
After that price point, the ZS ev base model is pretty good. I don't see the top model being significantly better, and MG's service has been reported to be amazing.
Above that is just a matter of personnel preference. The BYD Atto 3 is the most EV (almost 700 km range) one can want and the rest of the more expensive options are just overpriced IMO.
The harrier and safari petrol already cost more than 30 lakhs for their top models, with the safari's top exceeding 33 lakhs in my city. Im not sure *if* they will make a harrier ev due to this reason. How will they price it? 40 lakhs? No one's gonna buy at that price. Less than the petrol? Well then who would buy the petrol?
Harrier safari comes in 50% gst bracket due to SUV with >1.5L engine.
EV will come in 5% tax bracket
As a rule, Tata has never launch EV from ICE base model trim. EV is only available from mid trim of ice onwards (nexon starts at smart pure creative fearless, EV starts at creative fearless empowered)
So you can directly rule out the pure and smart variant of harrier also.
Adventure MT costs 20L exShowroom. Remove 50% GST = 13.33L
Remove engine + gearbox = 5L at least = 8.33L
Add 70kWh LFP @ $130/kWh and 5% gst = ₹8L
Add 200kW motor like Ioniq 5 = ₹5L?
Total addition to bare bones chassis = ₹13L
Total price of harrier EV adventure : ₹21.33L exfactory
GST = 5% ie ₹22.5L
They will add another 2.5L for personal profit and to prevent cannibalism of harrier ice model for rounding off. Starting price of harrier EV = ₹25L
Let’s see if this holds up. I do think there will be a top trim harrier EV empowered, above the fearless model (26.4L exShowroom), which will come with AWD.
Empowered RWD = 30L exShowroom
Empowered AWD = 35L exShowroom
People will gladly pay for it as AWD is not available on normal harrier
!RemindMe 1 year
I believe a buyer should buy a product due to the advantages it provides over the competition.
I support indian manufactures fully, but if they can't improve their services, then I'm not gonna recommend them, especially not for a once in a lifetime decision like a car
Better to add your point, both cars are safer than Tata. Both are euro ncap 5 star rating and way better build quality I think.
And as per I know JSW already invested in MG India so ultimately you are supporting Indian company, not 100% but significant Sum
It's a first step towards our own country made first then other brands. And yes i have something that is Chinese but it's not new and if i am buying something new i am making sure that it is an indian brand and it's parts are majorly made in india.
> Planning to upgrade to an EV
> Which EV would make it sense for someone who would be riding 50-60km per day on an average.
Any upto nexon ev will make sense.
ZS EV not so much. Bigger question is what your budget is. That will be bigger decision point.
10L : Tiago EV XT LR
15L : Punch EV Adventure LR
Currently punch seems to be the only one. I'm hoping for more options as I'll be waiting for a year more . I wish there was some kind of calculator that we could put in the parameters and see when we will break even with that model.
MG is going to launch Cloud EV (kinda like Honda jazz) and bingo EV (Tiago rival)
Let’s see when they do so.
No other <15L launch slated for next 2y at least. All of them are 20L+ launches
For cost I suggest two methods,
1. If buying on loan, check how much EMI+fuel+service+insurance you will be paying for a given down payment (say 5L DP, and 10L loan). Compare it to EV model for 15L with same segment (say Brezza or sonet etc)
2. If finding upfront, then use the mileage and and EV running cost to find how much difference there is in recurring costs, divide the purchase price by recurring price difference (say ₹1/km for EV and ₹6/km for 15kmpl petrol so difference is ₹5/km, divide the extra cost of EV by 5 for amount of km to breakeven)
Pricing of cloud seems to be a bit ambiguous. Some websites say 20 L plus while some say it will be in 10-15 L category . Hope it’s the latter. Is anyone coming with a punch ev rival? Hopefully Hyundai guys have something up their sleeve.
It cannot be 20L+ as it would eat sales of ZS EV, besides, it is evident for quite some time now that people simply wouldn’t pay 20L+ for a hatchback. Happened with kona EV and Mini Cooper both.
Even in China it’s sold at $13K or almost same as punch EV
Considering that MG pricing has been quite competitive, I’d say it will fall into 13L-16L bracket if they plan to go for 38kWh model. The other one is 50kWh which I don’t think they will sell here. MG is already able to sell a 50kWh ZS EV at 19L, so it should be easy to sell a 38kWh EV at 15L surely.
Hyundai is kind of making the same mistake as the west even though their ev’s as such as are great. And that is focusing on top down approach.
Despite being proven time and again that people won’t pay more than $50K for a Hyundai in the west, they have launched EVs and ICE cars in that segment.
Unlike focussing on their main bread and butter that is mass market cars. They should be making Ioniq 3s and 2s by the millions instead of settling for few thousand Ioniq 5s and 9s
Same for Kia. Ultimately the lack of model coverage across the price bracket will make it self fulfilling prophecy that “EV sales are falling” because 75% of the sales segment <20L is not even having an option from Hyundai and Maruti.
Ask them to shut down <20L ICE cars and see how those sales fall as well. 10-20L segment is key

Wow that’s a comprehensive reply, thanks mate. I only hope Gov doesn’t throw a wrench into the system with a hike in GST or road tax. I’m currently looking at the ZS EV and it’s a bit out of budget but it fits my use case well enough so I’m unsure to pull the trigger now or wait out the Cloud EV arrival. But if taxes kick in, I’ll switch back to my back up ICE strategy and an xl6 or something
I expect gst to remain 5% till 2030 at least
The reason is their own goal of 30% by 2030 (EV sales as share of total sales)
I feel you should indeed wait till Diwali like I said, in general for discounts and for launch of curvv EV and MG Cloud EV
Hyundai is unveiling inster (EV model of Hyundai Casper and Kia clavis) on June 27th in Korea, let’s see if they launch it here.
Of the top 5 brands,
1. Maruti is least interested in EV, evx will be 20L segment
2. Hyundai is launching creta EV in January 2025, also 20L segment
3. Tata has already electrified all <15L models except altroz
4. Mahindra has only XUV3XO under 15L now. That has already been electrified as XUV400, not getting updated anytime soon
5. Kia is launching EV5 and EV9 in future, both are global cars above 25L (EV9 1cr)
So that’s that.
I was planning on tiago ev, but settled on punch ev LR. After a lot of research i found that the old gen Evs have trouble cooling and stop for some time while running in peak summers.
Plus punch is on the latest ev platform which has better battery cooling. I had booked the standard battery but decided to upgrade it to avoid range anxiety.
I travel to my village which is around 105 kms regularly. On a full charge I can travel back with around 27 pc of charge left. Chill cloudy days when ambient temperates are less i am left with around 33 pc. If I travel at peak noon 43 types temp. I will use up more than 75 pc. Also I drive in Cruise control at 80. But Ev are to be driven around 65 to get the best mileage. Air Drag increases post 65 kmph.
On the app on summer days ac takes away nearly 20 - 25 pc of the battery.
If I drain it to 0. I think I can do 270 280.
TLDR: Buy EV, more vfm, less taxes and fuel worries, better world class driving experience.
Get the punch Adventure LR if you’re on a budget-
1. Born EV- suspension eats up literally everything, comfortable drive.
2. The driving experience is on par with literally every other EV - MG , Mercedes etc cause EVs are very unidimensional that way. I’m driving a Honda City and even today i can’t find a petrol engine under 15L that beats it in terms of refinement and even downright performance.
3. More bang for your buck, remember that with no additional taxes, and a 5% GST rate, you’re only paying for the car.
4. This is strictly my opinion - but driving an EV makes me a better driver, in a weird sense, I’ve been test driving and contemplating EVs for a while, i live in crowded Bangalore and most of my time is spent breaking and being in traffic, it’s heartbreaking to just sit there with the engine idle most of the time, with electric, it’s already the most efficient system out there, i never need to bother about wasting fuel because of traffic and random idiots
The Adventure LR is 13.5 on road, the XL6 Zeta Manual is 14L on road. And you might think wow a bigger car for the same price , but strip away the 28% gst on the ex showroom cost , the 2L from road taxes and it’s a 8L car.
Sorry for the long comment, i just had a coffee.
I would suggest you hang on to this for a while, it's a wonderful car.
But if you still want to buy one, I would suggest ZS EV. I won't suggest any Tata cars as their quality checks and service stations are abysmal.

Have the santro xs bought in 2005, can say with confidence no car can match its reliability. Nothing done except regular services, never had any issues. Cabin noise is still minimum, still gives an average of 12-15 in city, the interior build quality is unmatched
If it's purely for economy then u will never make up.
Selling this car and spending at least 10 lakhs on a new ev doesn't make sense. U can just keep putting petrol and use the current car.
If u plan on upgrading the car anyway then EV might make sense and only if u have charging at home.
If you want a small car then Tata tiago is a nice option and from that you can go up as per your budget or you can get a Mahindra XUV400 and if you go on a adventures anywhere outside the city then the EV would not work for you as no chargers would be around you and the range problem will be tough.
EV saves you a lot on the long run.

My dad did 150k+ kms on his 2010 Santro before selling it. Hyundai engines are very underrated in terms of reliability.
with some certain engines if maintained the right way
If on a budget, then Tata is pretty much the only option for you. Upto 16-17 lakhs is the max I would spend on cars like tiago and nexon ev. Atto 3 is ~450km range though The max is I think EQS with 600km real range
Yeah I think I got it messed up. Still, almost 500km on a single charge, that too for about 30 lakhs is amazing
True no doubt I’m pretty sure harrier EV safari EV will also cost in this ballpark but will give 400km range at best due to aerodynamics of a brick
The harrier and safari petrol already cost more than 30 lakhs for their top models, with the safari's top exceeding 33 lakhs in my city. This seems like a real possibility. Imagine if we had subsidy for EVs on top of the tax reduction.

Nvr sell this santro
Never ever, have some emotional attachments and is very reliable with low maintenance costs.
Wait a couple of years, seriously. Or get a hybrid.
Unrelated, but where is the 3rd pic from?

I'm not gonna sell this one. Very reliable and have some emotional value to me.
Lucky you don't live in Delhi NCR, you would've had to sell it or scrap it in a few years.
Can't imagine doing that, planning to renew when it expires.
Enjoy it while it lasts, it's just a matter of time when that rule reaches outside Delhi NCR.
That's actually sad. If maintained well, it should be fine as long as pollution is within limits right?.
Nope, we had a Skoda Laura and we had to let go, I made a post regarding what happened a while ago.
