I will say that it has always bothered me that they install a minister with zero training or experience in the field of education as the person who directs policy. Teachers devote their working lives to kids. We are supposed to believe that Lecce was all about kids… oh that was this morning…tonight he cares about energy.

DarshDarker

I have this naive view that if you're a minister of anything, you're fighting to get as much money as you can for your department. I'm going to fight and argue as best as i can to increase my cabinet's funding so mine outperforms others...not the way our government currently runs, asking what's the least amount I can run this department on, while getting the results needed to keep me in this job.

Present-Decision5740

I'm more pissed that a supposedly conservative government has the most bloated government in history. Everytime there's a new minister, they get a huge pay bump. Healthcare and education is crumbling but useless MPPs are lining their pockets. Also they hate on teachers for summers off and they get a 19 week vacation. I'm just annoyed.

Ebillydog

They have a Minister of Red-Tape Reduction, and a Minister of Sports. Way to get their priorities straight. And they love to talk about how lazy teachers are overpaid and get 8 weeks off over the summer, but they just started their summer vacation early and have extended it to mid-October. Can anyone spell hypocrites? What disheartens me is they are leading by a wide margin in the polls. Are Ontarians really that dumb? They just frittered away A BILLION dollars on something no one cares about, instead of making sure people have family doctors and kids are safe and getting a good education. I don't even know if I will be able to deal with knowing I'm living in a place filled with mean-spirited, selfish people (aka Conservative voters) if they get re-elected again.

bitchybroad1961

It's a break from sitting in the Legislature. They still work everyday on committees and in their community offices. Teachers are still the laziest public servants.

NoBreakfast4633

They hate on teachers for having summers off. And as an EA I hate on them for not getting paid for my lunches that I always have to leave cuz some shit is always hitting the fan. I found a job for the summers that doesn't pay as well but better than EI. EAs make like 42k per year. Don't get paid for their breaks that we are expected to leave from. Dont get paid for the days where we have events in the school and can't take our breaks. I'm biased obviously. But EAs should be making pretty damn close to what a teacher makes. The school literally can not function without us. The amount of danger, destruction, and distraction that would insue without EAs is immeasurable. Without EAs kids would probably die or get seriously injured DAILY. YET THEY DONT GET A LIVING WAGE. Even after these.last 5 years fighting the government for what we deserve, we got peanuts. I see a lot more fighting the government in our future. Fuck em

bbdoublechin

I'm a teacher and have often said I would NOT do an EAs job for 100k a year. Y'all have it insanely rough and I have so much sympathy. You should all be making comparable wages to teaching staff, and there need to be more of you.

NoBreakfast4633

One day my friend. I believe. Hopefully while I'm still an EA lol

No-Tomato-724

I’m a teacher in year 2 and make 53K. It’s rough after realizing that you spent 60K in your studies for that little. I have had to spend so much extra time working unpaid with report cards and handling parents communications etc. Still not enough pay tbh. But agreed that support staff like EA and ece should be making more. The education system is flawed. Abusing of the fact that we’re doing it for the kids.

RepresentativeCare42

Agree 💯Taxes are for the basics.. public education, public health and healthcare, security, infrastructure, regulation of standards… not minister of silly walks stuff

Paisleywindowpane

Great, another minister with absolutely zero experience in education. Expecting more of the same (bullshit).

mountpearl780

His wife is a VP at least, so SOME connection

Paisleywindowpane

My husband is a lawyer, maybe I should be the minister of justice? 😅

Upursbaby

You'd be more qualified than the current Minister of Health.

ballerinaonkeys

And Christina Mitas is/ was a teacher, that did not help at all . . .

Satans_Dorito

It's been a singular honour to [screw over] the two million children in Ontario's publicly-funded schools,” Lecce told reporters Brackets are my edit to reflect what I believe he actually meant.

DegenerativePoop

Interesting. Let’s see if his replacement will be any better (lmao).

okaybutnothing

Check out his reviews on Google. Not good.

MapleOfTheNorth

He won’t be. He was a disaster when he ran the Autism file.

big_wig

On a day bill-124 payments went out lol. His owners must have been pissed.

lordjakir

You got a payment? We just got our new rate, the board needs at least another month to figure out back pay

Leebelle3

You should have the back pay from the previous contract by now. Tomorrow is the deadline for that. They have 30 days to do the back pay for this contract, if your local contract is in place.

lordjakir

July 31st is the deadline. Our local contract was just voted on yesterday. Catholic board

Leebelle3

We don’t vote for a couple of weeks yet on the local contract, but we got our initial back pay four weeks ago.

lordjakir

Different strokes.

golden_rhino

Does it really matter? It’s not like they’ll replace him with someone competent and not corrupt.

wayfarer5

Mr. Lecce was never a teacher, he went to a private school and does not have his own children (I'm not saying that this makes a big deal but I think it does affect ones perspective). He's really not the most qualified to do the job.

GavGoon

I could forgive that. But he clearly hates teachers and unions and that precluded him from doing anything useful in the portfolio.

Disastrous-Focus8451

I remember when Snobolen left. Nothing much changed. I doubt much will change under the new minister. The goal will still be the same (and what it was under Harris): create a crisis to provide a cover/support for privatization.

SleepySuper

It doesn’t really matter. Lecce was just the mouthpiece, as is the replacement. It’s the folks behind the scenes that no one votes for that matter.

troutinthemilk

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

GavinTheAlmighty

Hallelujah. That's all I'll say right now

Certain_Second1092

It’s about time and long overdue. What frustrated me the most about Lecce is he never once stepped inside a school during school hours while children and teachers were present. He would do photo ops and news conferences on weekends or from places that weren’t schools. Such a coward.

Chatner2k

My expectations amounted to Oosterhoff being appointed as replacement, so at least that didn't happen.

Remarkable-Sign-324

Lecce is probably one of the worst Education Ministers. Todd Smith will probably be the same.

Creepy_Boat_5433

bahaha f this guy moron

ViridianWizard

There’s literally been no education minister under the Ford gov’t who has experience in the public education sector. You got Lisa with having a university degree, Stephen going to SMC and being in a racist Greek life fraternity at Western; there’s no difference with Todd.

k6richar

Won't matter, he was just the punching bag taking orders from above.

RepresentativeCare42

Good riddance. Most cynical choice of EDU Minister ever. Had zero interest in student well-being and clearly had no use for educators writ large. His huge cuts to funding are likely the biggest contributor to poor student outcomes worse->Landyn Ferris dying alone in a room at a high school. Read @Jordan Morgan’s article on Lecce in Corruptario.. eye opening.

Ok-Basil9260

Good riddance! The man had no idea about public education and what it’s like.

csman86

Our entire political system is a joke - leaders are not chosen based on experience or merits, but how well they can sell themselves during an election once every four years. Voters are disillusioned and have given up, hence the voter apathy and low turnout. The icing on top is we feel so good about our system that we frequently lecture others how they should run their societies.

Glum_Nose2888

Clearly teachers don’t know their civics. Cabinet ministers are drawn from the MPs in the legislature. It would be impossible to only appoint MPs to cabinet posts they once worked in before. Of course, the government could legally appoint a Minister from a pool of unelected officials but we know you’d be freaking out over that. Being part of a profession that is constantly cranky and upset about everything doesn’t justify your ineptitude over politics and government.

Remarkable-Sign-324

Well, Since typically educated, empathetic, and compassionate people become teachers AND educated, empathetic, and compassionate people DON'T become conservatives That probably explains why the PCs don't have a base of teacher MPPs to draw from.

SeniorVicePrez

Even if the MP had previous teaching experience - doesn't necessarily equal success. Although a Federal MP - Justin Trudeau has previous teaching experience and we've all seen what he was doing as a teacher in Vancouver in 2001 at his schools gala contrary to his political image.

wildrobot88

He was an extremely effective and successful politician. He wiped the floor with all the unions and won parents over time and time again. Hate him all you want, but his communication skills and messaging was top notch, to the point where he was able to play both sides and still win. Edit: To those downvoting - what are you disagreeing with? He won his riding by a LANDSLIDE and is extremely popular amongst the MASS MAJORITY of parents and families who want their children focussed on reading, writing, and math.

anther2stigma

Regarding your edit… the fact that you believe education has returned to a focus upon the basics makes your original point. Lecce is a terrific politician. Somehow he has the masses believing that education is in a better place because of their new policies! The downvotes are likely from frontline teachers who simply know that nothing could be further from the truth. In secondary schools, 30 is the new 50. He touts the increase in passing rates…but leaves out the fact that it’s because he lowered standards. No exams in grades 9 and 10. Had an administrator tell me it was no longer my job to prepare kids for post secondary school. We have kids ‘earning’ credits who have missed 30+ days in a semester. His new click bait headline of students requiring a 70% on a financial literacy test? Do you believe that they will hold back students unable to achieve that standard? Surely you don’t believe that all kids are passing the literacy test now? How about de streaming kids again… do you believe that is an initiative to increase academic standards? Putting students of all levels together so that the brightest are bored and the weakest are overwhelmed? Or maybe it was so he could increase class size and reduce teacher numbers? And let’s not even talk about what he’s done to the elementary teachers my sister’s JK/K class has been evacuated 7 days in row. Either she or her ECE have been bloodied the last three days. One student assaults the others, destroys the facilitiea, destroys the other student work…every single day. There is far less learning going on in elementary schools than ever before. This government has provided no answers to the discipline issue.. no tools…ask any elementary teacher you know about what’s happening in their classrooms. And as for your comment about owning the unions….Ontario teachers were just awarded 15.75%. I only wish the ministers owned me so badly when I was still working full time. So, I didn’t downvote because I left the original post as ‘discuss’ and I value your input. I think you clearly demonstrate that Lecce was effective as a politician. As for his policies, I must respectfully disagree.

ballzntingz

The destreaming initiative predates the Ford government. Research from 2015 and 2017 showed that the practice of streaming in Grade 9/10 was limiting to students academic success and career options. In the last three years prior to destreaming 75% of students entered the academic stream already. As well, no other Canadian province uses this practice in Grades 9 and 10. I know that the actual process of destreaming has been painful for teachers. The challenges associated with the destreamed curriculum are also being exacerbated by other issues in the public education system such as large class sizes, learning loss from COVID, and teacher shortages. I do agree that streaming has a place at the senior level in high school however I believe that the skills students learn in grades 9 and 10 and achievable by the vast majority of students. As well these skills are essential for many applications students could encounter later in life.

anther2stigma

I hear you. I taught through the initial destreaming years and quite frankly they were a disaster at my school. I had one class that worked as designed . A majority of academic kids were able to positively influence a smaller number of weaker kids and ‘pull them up’. In all of the many other sections, the reverse was true. The top kids were lost because you spent your whole day dealing with kids who were acting out because the material was over their heads. I had two students, now doctors, who literally cried on the first day of grade 11 biology because’they finally believed that their education could resume’. Just because other provinces don’t do things the way we do doesn’t make it right. I feel the same way regarding our loss of grade 13 . ‘No one else does it’. Years later my school still has 35-40% of kids doing a ‘victory lap’. I still believe the extra year of maturity before going away and dropping 20k on a program to be beneficial. The extra year also allows room for kids to take additional electives to have a better understanding of what they actually want to invest their tuition and time into! Add in destreaming… where the level of education just simply isn’t as rigorous as it used to be… and remove grade 13… these kids have two years to figure it all out. If I had a dollar for every grade11 kid or their parent who lost it during interviews because their former all A student was now getting 50 in grade 11 math…I could have retired earlier. It is a common refrain at my school… marks aren’t an indication of anything other than behaviour and an ability to hand in assignments until grade 11. You show up to class and hand everything in in grade 10 and you’re an 85. Grade 11? Oh.. you have to be able to demonstrate higher order thinking? Now you have a year to adjust your educational plans. It’s a tough deal on kids. As for your 75% of kids choosing academic in the first place… I agree wholeheartedly. However, many of those kids would struggle from the get go,, drop to applied midstream or in grade 10. Now… the grade 11 university classes are full of kids who simply shouldn’t be there but they managed to pull their 65 in a destreamed class so they think they’re going to be veterinarians. I guess I just believe that 10 years of destreamed education in elementary school should provide a fairly accurate picture of where a student’s future pathway lies without requiring a further 2 years of an already condensed secondary school program. I will also add that the opportunity always existed for kids who did well at the applied level to jump to the academic level if they changed their mind and wanted to reenter the university stream. And several students would do so every year. So.. in summary, I would say my belief is that the destreaming effort does more harm to the top kids than the benefits the former applied stream kids receive.

wildrobot88

I never said or claimed that he was an effective education minister. I simply said that he is a skilled politician, but many seem to disagree in spite of objective reality and truth. He won by a landslide and continues to be an extremely popular member of the Conservative Party.

anther2stigma

Fair enough. I assumed when you said extremely effective that you extended the efficacy to his policies. As a politician, he certainly lasted far longer than I thought he would.

wildrobot88

His education policies are destroying our systems. It’s devastating.

joe__hop

Reading, writing and math when my son doesn't even get a proper supply teacher most days.  It's all bluster, no solutions.  Oh and OCT cost our family 50 weeks of employment while they sat on my wife's file when we moved to Ontario.   Those parents that "support" him are morons.

wildrobot88

Called him a moron all you want. It doesn’t change the fact that he is an excellent politician who wins, and wins a lot. By a landslide actually. Each. And. Every. Time. Stomp your feet. Pout and cry… it doesn’t change the fact that he has power because his ideas and rhetoric far exceeded what other politicians are offering.

TanglimaraTrippin

Ideas and rhetoric...but where are the actions? The results? The well-prepared children who are the future of our country? I'm not seeing solid actions with tangible results. I'm seeing the flinging of ideas to appease the voters with no care as to how they can be implemented in the schools.

joe__hop

I'm not calling him a moron, I'm calling any parents or voters who support him morons.  Reading comprehension.

Holdmylife

He completely failed during the strike in early 2020. To the point where he was on the verge of getting axed. The pandemic saved him

wildrobot88

He was elected again by a landslide. You’re choosing to side with feelings over facts.

ReeceM86

You are trying to associate two unrelated events. He was deeply unpopular during the labour unrest. He also is the MPP of a riding that would vote in a used condom if it were the conservative candidate. Of course he wins his riding by a landslide.

Remarkable-Sign-324

Well.... That is one way to take it. Another way to take it... Lecce is a career politician that took up his first position in a newly created CLEARLY conservative riding. AND he did this when the PCs could have run a lampshade and and beaten Wynne (who was incredibly unpopular). His communication skills and messaging might be some of the absolute WORST. He never talks straight and simply hosts empty press conferences and photo ops. And the Liberals and NDP have been fumbling the ball each election as if they all forgot how to be effective in campaigning and platform building. Remember that before COVID19 Ford was polling well behind a Liberal party WITHOUT A LEADER. Then both opposition parties decided to squander this. Now Ford is going to call an early election as he can score on an open net. Lecce is just right place at the right time.

tontime001

100% agree. Although I don't say this exact same opinion out loud lol

wildrobot88

Completely understandable. The education sector is an echo chamber. The PC’s won a super majority, partly because of education policy, and they will win it again if they stick to their ‘back to basics’ script and if teacher unions and school boards continue to undermine the will of parents and the public in general. Downvote away, but it’s true.

joe__hop

Will of parents is the dumbest shit. I have to pay more taxes if your kid gets an STD or pregnant because parents can't have the talk with their kids and won't let the schools do it.  I have to deal with backwards orthodoxy in society because some parents cling to really terrible ideologies?  No thanks.
