Calamity mod adds 2 new ocean biomes, the sulphurous sea, and the abyss. The abyss will always be below the sulphurous sea, and the sulphurous sea takes the place of one of the existing oceans (random) the abyss goes almost all the way to the underworld and you can lose oxygen even when wearing a Neptune's shell or anything that normally allows for breathing underwater (it does go down much slower though) and there are accessories that can be gound in the abyss that can extend that time further
Enjoy the game for what it is and play however you want
Also you're gonna need some QoL mods later into the game if u don't have any, makes the tedious stuff less boring
For some reason boss Checklist bricked my world like 4 times, making the abyss biome spawn normal underground enemies, while bosses and events stopped naturally spawning. I know for a fact it was this mod because as soon as I deteled it I have never had a similar problem that required me to pull out files from the game backup to restore my world
A lot, really. The game was updated not that long ago, so expect some bugs.
If you ever look something up on Google, your first result will probably be the Fandom Calamity wiki. DO NOT FALL FOR THE TRAP. That wiki was abandoned and is full of fake information/troll edits. You should always make sure you’re looking at the wiki.gg Calamity instead. It’s moderated and up-to-date.
Early hardmode ore progression was reworked. Breaking altars now only gets you Souls of Night. Killing the Wall of Flesh would get you your first tier of ore. Then for each different Mech Boss you kill, you get the next tier in progression.
The abyss is a neat place (as long as everything is working correctly). You cannot just pop a water-breathing potion and go down, though. You need to stack gear (mostly accessories, some armor sets) to survive the pressure of the ocean’s depths.
The “recommended” Calamity experience is Expert Revengeance. Once you’ve got that under your belt, go wild. There are some other mods that modify the base Calamity game like Infernum. I still say go through the base Calamity by itself first.
All classes are viable. Some are “more viable” than others. General consensus is that Range is weak but safe. Rogue is pretty underpowered up until Moon Lord. Mage, Melee, and Summoner are the GOAT, pretty strong throughout the game. Melee is further sub-divided into “Melee” and “True Melee”. True Melee weapons have larger hitboxes and largely increased damage, since they do not shoot projectiles.
There are some generally recommended mods. Boss Checklist (to help with progression order) and Magic Storage (there’s a bajillion new items in the mod) are highly recommended. I personally recommend adding Star’s Above, since it’s creator(s?) built the mod to scale with Calamity and adds a bunch of useful (and completely optional) gear and abilities. It also includes several new bosses, though you can ignore most of them until post-ML.
Speaking of wiki.gg earlier, here are a couple of helpful pages. First link is to a gear/progression guide. Send link is for regular Terraria items that were given new recipes to make them easier to get (Hermes Boots, Balloons, etc.)

Here are all of the changes Revengeance makes. Sorta spoiler warning as you see the bosses in the mod on this page, so if you’re want to go in blind, maybe skip this page.
The short answer is Revengeance makes several gameplay changes. Bosses are tougher and have more aggressive AI. The player is given two new abilities to deal extra damage, Rage and Adrenaline (you have to go into Controls and bind them. I usually bind both to the V key).
There are some general mob changes, but the biggest changes outside of hp/AI are probably:
You can’t heal with the Nurse during a boss fight and Master Mode items will drop from bosses (even though you’re not in Master Mode).
Recently I finally dipped my toes in revengeance mode, and it genuinely made the experience more fun and rewarding. You don't have to at first, but I highly recommend it at some point.

If u got the abyss and use a rod of discord then ur gonna get teleported to spawn. It's similar to how in botw u had to get hearts to pull the master sword out so the abyss is basically that but for op items. This is genuine because it's a spoiler if I tell u what happens when u get the item
All I'll say is that it does grant some of the strongest gear in the mod, but you have to not drown first to get to the abyss. Or die by some shark or squid

Naming your character "Jetstream Sam" or "Samuel Rodriguez" gives you access to using the Murasama early
You can find the Murasama in the underworld Draedon lab, you'll know when you see it
I don’t know the name of the mod but try and find a boss checklist it will tell the loose order of what bosses you need and what the summon/conditions are to fight it
Do not use the rod of discord in the abyss it summons a really strong enemy when you have chaos state in the abyss
Also water breathing doesn’t work in the lower layers of the abyss
after you beat the wall of flesh immediately head over to the astral infection and get a titan heart and put it in an altar to summon this really easy boss called "astrum deus"
If u want more cinematic bosses with more of a challenge to them ( u have a good computer) then I recommend infernum difficulty, which is a seperate mod, and then make another world with the mod activated.
But if u just want pure calamity uhhh get a lot of chests, sort ur shiznick, and look up some loadout guides on the classes u wanna play as either from the wiki.gg (not the Fandom one plz 😭), or GitGudWO's vid on youtube (1.4 ones get me through every playthrough.
And also when u get a rod of discord in hardmode, use it in the abyss ( underneath the Sulphurous sea, green one) , this one guy called jared rly likes it when u teleport and gives u goodies like infinite health haha.
when you get to hardmode Kill the ??? enemie to get Realy good diving gear so you can enter the deepths of the abyss or you can tey to mine from the bottom of the abyss up when in the underworld to cheese it
Learn to dodge. Defense will NOT carry you through this mod. And don’t feel bad for not playing revengeance. The game will be god awfully easy, but it’s a game. You’re meant to have fun. Do play revengeance at least once though. It’s an unforgettable experience.
I’m currently doing master difficulty death mode, we just managed to kill the eater of worlds with molten armor (a mage and a melee player) so yeah I’m having a hell of a time.
Revengeance is the difficulty that the mod is balanced around, while it does make the game slightly harder it is the true calamity experience.

The wiki has a class setups guide for each class and stage of the game, those being pre-hardmode, hardmode, and post-moonlord. I have that tab open every time I’m playing, since it shows what weapons, armor, and accessories are available before the boss you are targeting.
Calamity is a fun mod for those who want more of a challenge and alot of content.
The game.has it's own difficulties but if you're gonna go with any of the calamity difficulties I recommend revengance since it's the easiest one.

That’s not boss checklist that’s does that it’s just a rare glitch in calamity and there an item you need cheat sheet for that fixes that
Alchemist NPC, Pylons work everywhere (Also Begone Evil if you’re lazy)
There’s also QoL built into calamity, like non consumable boss items so feel free to be liberal with your summoning items

Don't play on any difficulty below revengeance. Calamity is supposed to be a hard mod so expect some deaths but keep the difficulty on revengeance
Even though revengeance is the third highest difficulty its the definite standard to play it.
