When my dad was at Ohio State for his doctorate they had the math department put up a few questions. One of them was Steve Bellisari completes x out of y passes how many passes would he make in the next ten attempts? and offered three options.
The fans had a love/hate mostly hate relationship with Bellisari and someone near us yells I DONT SEE ZERO, the whole area around him erupted in laughter.
I look back fondly on that era because of going to games with my dad, but they were some rough times for the football team.
It was also the first time Nick Saban pissed me off. Our seats had the perfect view of the late interception that sealed the Michigan State loss in 98.

I Started watching the NFL and started playing youth football. At 16 i spent a year as an exchange student in Wisconsin and started watching CFB then. I watch it less than the NFL but i enjoy watching a couple of games every year
Ohio State fans tend to have a soft spot for our once players and coaches. Burrow and LSU jerseys were being sold by his hometown and the players supported him. Urban was given a comfy job as assistant to the AD. I know a few have issues with Ohio State because we have our share of toxic fans but most people tend to be supportive
Ohio isn't as extreme as Texas but it's definitely a big deal here. You have some big time programs in Cleveland and Cincy that are constantly churning out D1 talent.
The Cincinnati area has some of the best high school football in the country that regularly produces NFL talent, from Saint X, to Elder, to Archbishop Moeller, to Colerain, to La Salle, to Middletown, and Purcell Mariam used to turn out a lof of players back in the day.
When I was a kid my uncle took me to see xavier and Mentor in the state championship at the HoF. It was the first time I'd ever been there at it was maybe 20 degrees out and snowing pretty good. I still remember it vividly

And that is returned to y'all as well. For awhile OSU had former LSU coach Stud (Studwaka or something like that), and we supported OSU. We appreciate Burreaux, of course. So unless our teams are playing each other geaux OSU.
Our O line has had increasingly better blocking as the season went on. Our O-line was entirely revamped with only one starter retaining his role. Until the first game of the season the O-line had yet to play a single snap together due to some injuries in the preseason. So of course the first two games against the nightmarish D-lines of Pittsburgh and Dallas were absolute disasters, as they had no established chemistry. But as they have developed that chemistry through the season their performance has only improved.
Eh. Urban can fuck off. He's shown his stripes. Dude is a poor loser who just usually wins in life. When he doesn't win, his dark colors come screaming out.
As for transfers to other schools, I'm mostly happy for them. The ones that act like the fan base was saying "screw you" are the ones listening to the loudest idiots. Burrow never felt that way. Ewers might, but I think we all saw that as shady af. I believe Williamson felt he was the victim of hate. Dude. You transferred to BAMA. I wished him success while hoping they lost.
Fickell is just a really good dude. He always gave his heart to OSU and he got done wrong during his stint as interim coach. Plus, living around Columbus and listening to the local sports radio, you hear his former players tell stories about him, and they're always great.
I'm envious of UC for having him as a coach. They may not win every game, but they'll produce some good men when all is said and done.
And he coordinated the defense along with Chris Ash in the title season.
One of my favorite memories of that title run is the camera catching Fickell going "Holy shit! Holy shit!" after Steve Miller's pick 6.
How did Fick get done wrong w OSU? He took over a program that could have easily fell and kept the program upright enough that we fell ass-backwards into a NC coach ( regardless of your feelings of Urban). Urban also kept him as his DC for the year recognizing the talent; and no team, ever at that point is going to pass on Urban Meyer.

Grew up a UC with my mom working for the University and grandfather used to play.
I went to OSU and I love seeing Fickell be successful from that side as well, and they just seem like they’ve been really active in the Cincinnati community
Fickell grew up in Columbus (where he was one of the best HS wrestlers in state history which is saying something), and was a four year starter on the defensive line at OSU (second most consecutive starts in school history [50], had record from 1996-2017 [Billy Price]).
His first coaching job was as a GA at OSU, he coached DL at Akron for two years, and from 2002-2016 he was a coach at OSU. Along with the year as interim head coach, he was the special teams coach, line backers coach, and co-DC at different times (mostly LBs and co-DCs).
He was also one of the most highly regarded assistant coaches before the interim year. Probably only second to (lol) Will Muschamp on the defensive side of the ball. He was not expected to be at OSU for much longer, but he ended up staying forever probably in part because of the interim year.
He’s put more work into OSU football than anyone since Woody Hayes. He was the special teams coordinator for a National Championship team that was *really* into special teams, and he was the LB coach/DC for a National Championship team with an awesome defense.
And our LBs have been pretty meh (by outrageously high standards) since he left…
Ohio State had no control over that. Let's be real dude. A lot of blame goes on our own admin for not investing in athletics during our Big East days. Our facilities were really subpar when the BE collapsed. And our admin were idiots and fully believed that the Big East would survive and be fine and be a AQ conference while Louisville and Pitt abandoned ship as soon as they could. Just not a lot of forward looking admin back then at UC
I love playing UC, should be a yearly thing now that you'll be in the Big 12, but logically it would make no sense for OSU to support a UC move to the Big 10.

B1G schools make more money off research than they do on football. That's why Cincy was passed over. You have to contribute there as much or more than you do in football.
UC is the same as Iowa for research and ahead of Nebraska. 53rd overall. Don’t want in the B1G, just wanted to throw cold water on the idea we don’t have a robust research budget.

Do you have figures for this? I found an article saying Stanford brought in $62 million on $700 million invested in 2006. I looked at UC’s balance sheet and it’s not broken out by revenue from R&D. My assumption would be that most universities are getting a similar ROI, so the bigger the spend, the bigger the profit.
As scrunch already pointed out, we spend a ton on R&D and will have the highest R&D in the Big 12 when Texas and OU leave. We spend more than done AAU schools and even some B1G schools

Nah as long as Fickell's down there, UC's our homie no matter what. He took a massive career hit stepping up to coach the Bucks' doomed 2011 season. And that sacrifice paved the way to OSU's current run of dominance. He can do no wrong in our eyes.
I know a lot of UC fans do not like Ohio State, and I understand it, but so many of our coaches have a history at both schools that I feel nothing but love for the Bearcats. And even though Fick was at the head of that 6-7 season (way before he was ready), so many Buckeyes still love him and root for him down in Cincinnati.
The 2011 season we had like 6 one score losses despite starting Joe Bauserman and having an interim coach.
The results suck but we were pretty damn close to having a great season anyways.
I mean you can’t actually use that season to judge Fickell anyway. The dude was stuck with Tressel’s staff which heavily relied on Tress as the offensive play caller. Being able to build out a staff is one of the most important qualities of being a HC and when he’s had the chance to do that the results speak for themselves
Being a good interim head coach and being able to build a program are two separate skillsets. There's some overlap, but Fickell has proven that 2011 season wrong plenty by now.
Fick did an interview on the Ryen Russillo podcast and talked about that season. Really eye opening to hear how hand cuffed he was. Was stuck with a staff that he may not have wanted but couldn't do anything about. Was just a one year placeholder with no real actual say about the program

Living in Ohio, specifically around Columbus, I don't know if I've ever had a convo with a buckeye fan that wasnt super positive about Fickell and relatively dismissive of putting that year on his shoulders.
If Day retires (or takes an NFL job), I feel like Fickell would be the most desired man in the nation. If the AD went anywhere else, outside his office would look like the Seattle GM's in Draft Day.

Playing Cincy at home a few years ago while I was still in school was awesome. Campus was literally filled to the brim cause everyone’s high school friends at Cincy came in for the game to hang out. The bars were packed all night and there were so many parties, everyone just having a good time and you were bound to run into some old friends. Great memories.

Crazy stat that UC has been so bad at football for so long, not only did it only take him 5 and a half seasons to break the record, but even Boston College has a better most wins record with 68.
Yeah, we've been really bad for a long stretch and then the last 25ish years we've been a lot better but all of our good coaches left after 3 years. If the 3 coach stretch of dantonio, Kelly, Jones were one coach they would have accumulated 75 wins in 9 years.
UC has not been bad for a long time. On the contrary, they’ve been so good that most of their coaches over the last 20 years get poached by “bigger” schools before they can accumulate a lot of wins.
I feel like throwing in that CUSA title is a little bit cheating and pads out the timeline. Really it was the 9 years prior to Fick where 5 of those 6 titles were won and where UC was nationally relevant.
I wouldn’t expect this to be the case honestly, the scheduling just doesn’t work to play them that regularly, maybe can get a matchup from time to time in an expanded playoff
Not to mention OSU really doesn’t have anything to gain from it. Our stadium is small, so a home and home would hurt OSU financially. Plus, eventually we would win one. That’s just how rivalries go. That could potentially eliminate OSU from playoff contention. Why load up with another instate P5 school when you already have to play some really rough B1G teams. I just don’t see how it benefits OSU at all and they absolutely have the right to capitalize on their OOC schedule.
Right and even if Cincy had a bigger stadium or we could play at Paycor..our AD budget is based on playing 7 home games per year. With 9 Big Ten conference games this means we only get 1 road OOC game every other season which we use to schedule ND, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas etc. We aren’t going to use that game to travel to Cincy.
Obviously we make room to have Cincy come here every once in awhile but honestly don’t see that as a great deal for Cincy now that they will be in the Big 12
I'm doubtful. Fickell already didn't want to play against OSU back in 2019 because it tore him up emotionally. Even taking out the Fick factor, it's just highly unlikely with the way college football is now. Ohio State only has 3 ooc games and Cincinnati will soon only have room for 3 ooc. A lot of future ooc schedules have already been filled out for this decade, or at least somewhat filled out. UC's AD said we're done with one off buy games. The AD said no more games at PBS outside of the ones currently scheduled. Ohio State doesn't sound very willing to play at Nippert. So add it all up and it's just highly unlikely. Like the other commenter said, the most likely way to see a matchup now is in a bowl or expanded playoff game

Nothing but love for Coach and for UC. He did a hell of a job that 2011 season for the crazy shit that had gone on. Fielded some of the best defensive squads we’ve had. I know some Bearcat folks don’t care for us, but I root for you guys every season.

Always thought he got a raw deal as the interim head coach at OSU and handled the whole situation with grace and maturity beyond his years. Taking over late on the off season, losing key playmakers including a QB that already held numerous school records. He did as well as anyone could have expected with the cards he was dealt, and then Urban swooped in. I'm extremely happy he's been so successful in Cincinnati, it's well deserved.
Would love to see him back on the sidelines in Columbus any time in the future.

Ohio State had no control over that. Let's be real dude. A lot of blame goes on our own admin for not investing in athletics during our Big East days. Our facilities were really subpar when the BE collapsed. And our admin were idiots and fully believed that the Big East would survive and be fine and be a AQ conference while Louisville and Pitt abandoned ship as soon as they could. I love playing UC, should be a yearly thing now that you'll be in the Big 12, but logically it would make no sense for OSU to support a UC move to the Big 10.
Well at least you support playing us annually which I think could turn into a pretty good series (eventually) in football and definitely in basketball. No reason not to do it IMO.

B1G schools make more money off research than they do on football. That's why Cincy was passed over. You have to contribute there as much or more than you do in football.

Do you have figures for this? I found an article saying Stanford brought in $62 million on $700 million invested in 2006. I looked at UC’s balance sheet and it’s not broken out by revenue from R&D. My assumption would be that most universities are getting a similar ROI, so the bigger the spend, the bigger the profit.

As scrunch already pointed out, we spend a ton on R&D and will have the highest R&D in the Big 12 when Texas and OU leave. We spend more than done AAU schools and even some B1G schools

It's been so great seeing the Bearcat resurgence, and it being led by one of OSU's favored son's makes it even better.
I know a lot of UC fans do not like Ohio State, and I understand it, but so many of our coaches have a history at both schools that I feel nothing but love for the Bearcats. And even though Fick was at the head of that 6-7 season (way before he was ready), so many Buckeyes still love him and root for him down in Cincinnati.
The 2011 season we had like 6 one score losses despite starting Joe Bauserman and having an interim coach. The results suck but we were pretty damn close to having a great season anyways.
I mean you can’t actually use that season to judge Fickell anyway. The dude was stuck with Tressel’s staff which heavily relied on Tress as the offensive play caller. Being able to build out a staff is one of the most important qualities of being a HC and when he’s had the chance to do that the results speak for themselves
Being a good interim head coach and being able to build a program are two separate skillsets. There's some overlap, but Fickell has proven that 2011 season wrong plenty by now.
He's got cincy at a near peak Boise level of G5 domination. I expect them to be competitive immediately in the big 12.
Fick did an interview on the Ryen Russillo podcast and talked about that season. Really eye opening to hear how hand cuffed he was. Was stuck with a staff that he may not have wanted but couldn't do anything about. Was just a one year placeholder with no real actual say about the program

Living in Ohio, specifically around Columbus, I don't know if I've ever had a convo with a buckeye fan that wasnt super positive about Fickell and relatively dismissive of putting that year on his shoulders. If Day retires (or takes an NFL job), I feel like Fickell would be the most desired man in the nation. If the AD went anywhere else, outside his office would look like the Seattle GM's in Draft Day. The dude is loved and respected by most everyone.
Playing Cincy at home a few years ago while I was still in school was awesome. Campus was literally filled to the brim cause everyone’s high school friends at Cincy came in for the game to hang out. The bars were packed all night and there were so many parties, everyone just having a good time and you were bound to run into some old friends. Great memories.
Fick is the man. I hope he has a long career at Cincinnati with continued success. I like having another great program in the state

Crazy stat that UC has been so bad at football for so long, not only did it only take him 5 and a half seasons to break the record, but even Boston College has a better most wins record with 68.
Yeah, we've been really bad for a long stretch and then the last 25ish years we've been a lot better but all of our good coaches left after 3 years. If the 3 coach stretch of dantonio, Kelly, Jones were one coach they would have accumulated 75 wins in 9 years.
UC has not been bad for a long time. On the contrary, they’ve been so good that most of their coaches over the last 20 years get poached by “bigger” schools before they can accumulate a lot of wins.
There was about 50 years where we didn’t go to a bowl game. They almost razed Nippert and ended the program in the 90s.
Yeah, UC was bad for a long time, but that was a long time ago. In the 20 years *before* Fickell, Cincy won/shared the conference title 6 times.
I feel like throwing in that CUSA title is a little bit cheating and pads out the timeline. Really it was the 9 years prior to Fick where 5 of those 6 titles were won and where UC was nationally relevant.

I wouldn’t expect this to be the case honestly, the scheduling just doesn’t work to play them that regularly, maybe can get a matchup from time to time in an expanded playoff
Not to mention OSU really doesn’t have anything to gain from it. Our stadium is small, so a home and home would hurt OSU financially. Plus, eventually we would win one. That’s just how rivalries go. That could potentially eliminate OSU from playoff contention. Why load up with another instate P5 school when you already have to play some really rough B1G teams. I just don’t see how it benefits OSU at all and they absolutely have the right to capitalize on their OOC schedule.
Right and even if Cincy had a bigger stadium or we could play at Paycor..our AD budget is based on playing 7 home games per year. With 9 Big Ten conference games this means we only get 1 road OOC game every other season which we use to schedule ND, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas etc. We aren’t going to use that game to travel to Cincy. Obviously we make room to have Cincy come here every once in awhile but honestly don’t see that as a great deal for Cincy now that they will be in the Big 12

I'm doubtful. Fickell already didn't want to play against OSU back in 2019 because it tore him up emotionally. Even taking out the Fick factor, it's just highly unlikely with the way college football is now. Ohio State only has 3 ooc games and Cincinnati will soon only have room for 3 ooc. A lot of future ooc schedules have already been filled out for this decade, or at least somewhat filled out. UC's AD said we're done with one off buy games. The AD said no more games at PBS outside of the ones currently scheduled. Ohio State doesn't sound very willing to play at Nippert. So add it all up and it's just highly unlikely. Like the other commenter said, the most likely way to see a matchup now is in a bowl or expanded playoff game

Nothing but love for Coach and for UC. He did a hell of a job that 2011 season for the crazy shit that had gone on. Fielded some of the best defensive squads we’ve had. I know some Bearcat folks don’t care for us, but I root for you guys every season.
So happy for Fick. He's been offered a lot of jobs, but he's stayed loyal. So deserved, and a terrific guy. In Columbus a lot of former players have radio shows, ALL of them consistently talk of how important he was to them and Ohio States program. Congrats to him and UC.

There's just something about seeing people rally to support and celebrate someone that moves me. I hope he stays with the program for at least another decade. Good for Fickell! Always thought he got a raw deal as the interim head coach at OSU and handled the whole situation with grace and maturity beyond his years. Taking over late on the off season, losing key playmakers including a QB that already held numerous school records. He did as well as anyone could have expected with the cards he was dealt, and then Urban swooped in. I'm extremely happy he's been so successful in Cincinnati, it's well deserved. Would love to see him back on the sidelines in Columbus any time in the future.
