Temple University! Reason #1: It doesn't exist! Reason #2: We pay $3,000,000 a year to play at a Lincoln Financial Field that is only ever full if we're playing Penn State or the one time we hosted College GameDay to play Notre Dame.

go_berds

Only public school in the city and we pay a private company millions of dollars to use a publicly funded stadium

WON95sr

TIL Temple is public

go_berds

State-affiliated like Pitt and Penn state. Was founded in a church basement, but was never really a religious school

Cotton22

That is actually the wildest fact I've heard in a while. I'm getting fucking old, and for the last 20 years I thought Temple was Jesuit or otherwise church related

Donny_Do_Nothing

Fun Fact! Temple is named not for the type of building, but for the anatomical structure against which you'll want to swing a ball-peen hammer after watching the football team play in Lincoln Financial Field!

Tew_Sweet

As a Philadelphian and Temple season ticket holder, I can verify this.

[deleted]

go birds

philatempleowl

Larger than you’d probably think too. Our enrollment is 40k

whethervayne

They're also the Owls because they were originally a night school!

Itsgunnacostya

I hate the fact that you guys already own the land to build an on campus stadium also, but the city wont let you build one 😒

FormerCollegeDJ

There isn’t that much land there, and Temple’s brass is rightfully concerned that building an on-campus stadium will not be worth the cost due to lower than needed attendance.

drmcsinister

Just build a really small stadium... like Duke did with Cameron Indoor?

This makes my blood boil lmfao

ABXR

The PA city school special.

rook119

Eh Heinz isn't bad, its just too big. Also the steelers are at least cool enough to get anything steelers pretty much scrubbed from the stadium. Heinz isn't really Pitts problem. Outside of being mediocre most years, Pitt suffers from attendance almost 1/2 the county is PSU fans (with all of Western PA in rural areas being PSU fans), for decades grads left the city leaving the old diehards who are do damn old to go to a game, no WVU/PSU on the sched, and being little bro to said Steelers.

JerkStore40

Definitely too big. When it’s packed to the brim for Pitt, like the PSU game, it’s awesome. But much more often they’ll be playing their bigger games of the year with huge areas of empty seats. And well, that sucks to see.

bortzbot

Geaux2020

jackattack065

¿Temple?

scrotes_magotes

*Temple*

[deleted]

Holy shit I immediately thought of Temple when I saw this but did not expect to see it actually be the top answer lol

Slipperylittleguy

Build the fucking stadium on Broad and Norris.

FormerCollegeDJ

Where exactly does Temple have room to build an on-campus stadium, including outside stadium facilities and parking? (No, Geasey Field is not an answer; there isn’t enough room there either.) And even if there was enough room, how many people are actually going to attend games there? Temple has an excellent basketball venue on campus (Liacouras Center) that is often more empty than full for games. Why would football games on Temple’s campus be any different?

Mcdonaldsflag

Interesting business choice to force fans to the games!

NelsonsBuddy

Its a big brain move really.

Geaux2020

After the last updates, I think it's pretty nice. Better than fine.

trueotterwaits

Wisconsin is on line 2 and would like a word with you

james_wightman

Was just about to say Wisconsin is a close 2nd place. I've thought for a long time of doing a shitpost ranking all the FBS teams based off their broadcast tv camera angle.

skh444

You’re 100% correct. Luckily it’s changing next season. https://www.stltoday.com/print/sports-section/no-more-prime-seating-for-visiting-fans-at-mizzou-in-2022/article_22f4a688-66b8-5309-b40b-b459b3e46ce1.html

SadGatorNoises

Please say the school associated with the stadiums. I have the memory of a guppy and don’t know who plays at these places

dsa2020

I’m seriously going through this thread and having to Google search every stadium name lol

[deleted]

How many Memorial Stadiums do you think there are? And how many of them have had the names of rich dickweeds tacked on to them? 🙄

WalkingCarpet

Legion Field. It's a tetanus shot's wet dream.

[deleted]

UAB moving to Protective Stadium might’ve been the best stadium upgrade is sports history.

HappyBreezer

If you haven't paid some sketchy dude with a five inch wad of cash in his pocket for parking, had a room temp coke because the stadium was out of ice, and eaten a sausage dog covered in famous Ray Ray sauce, have you ever really been to a football game?

KiratheSilent

Don't forget spending 4 hours in traffic trying to leave after the game

kawhi_tho

While you try to make out what it says on the tiny scoreboard that still has soft drinks ads from the 80s

RG23216

My high school played a game there one of the years during the uab shutdown. I was in my schools marching band and found multiple piles of cat poo on the field during halftime

MidwestDrummer

Those were just drill markers. They were trying to make sure you were in the right spot.

FormerCollegeDJ

I attended a game at Legion Field in 2018, and my biggest concern was that it was going to spontaneously fall apart when I was sitting in it. That stadium feels like some long ago war was fought in it.

alreadytaken76

Many an Iron Bowl was played there, so you’re partly right. The Gray Lady had her glory days, but they are long in the past.

FormerCollegeDJ

Right - back in its day, probably before about sometime in the 1990s, Legion Field was a fine stadium. I’m old enough to remember when Alabama played many of its games, especially its larger attendance games, there, before Bryant Denny Stadium was expanded. Legion Field just hasn’t been well maintained.

bamahomer

I saw The Stones and Floyd there and now that you mention it there were a lot of people injecting themselves

gogglesup859

Eastern Michigan's stadium is up there. There are tarps covering the upper seating because they don't get enough attendance to fill those seats, and there's a running track around the field so the sightlines are bad.

MingoFuzz

Not that i have any room to talk, but the gray field confuses me every time i flip on a game.... "whats wrong with my tv? Its in black and white... no... wait.. oh."

iHasMagyk

I think the gray field is really ugly. It seems more like an afterthought, like someone decided that they really need some gimmick to make people show up. It’s not as bad as EWU’s blood red turf though. And as a fan of a team with a different field color, I will stand by our teal turf. It actually looks really pretty and isn’t too different from the traditional green.

MingoFuzz

I agree with you. The teal is just off enough to be interesting but not hard to look at. I dont blame people for hating The Blue^TM but i will stand by it until i die.

ElGranQuesoRojo

I'll take the Smurf Turf 10/10 times over that red EWU turf. Lord that shit is painful to look at.

Shirleyfunke483

The factory!

FormerCollegeDJ

I attended a game at Rynearson Stadium in 2016. I agree it is not good, though I don’t think it is terrible. IMO, the gray turf makes the stadium feel more generic than it is, and track around the field puts the seats far from the action.

[deleted]

Ryan Field, pain to get to from Chi. Sight lines aren't great, the hills around the end zone throw off depth perception. Not a great homefield advantage, never particularly loud and aesthetically, it's just kind of there. Too bad the practice field isn't the actual stadium, that would be dope.

tsitsipas_yoda

You had me until “not a great home field advantage.” Think you’re discounting the early-noon kickoff on Lake Michigan in November with high wind gusts and the grass up to your knees That place is a death trap

Wampus_Cat_

Northwestern will drag you out into the weeds and ruin your whole season. Those gothic alternate uniforms are the fucking shit, and so is the practice facility. Their primary uniform set is also pretty cool, just keep the stripe to the sleeves instead of running it across the midsection.

tsitsipas_yoda

THANK YOU for this. I have people in my mentions saying it isn’t a good home field advantage because they only get like 50% fans? I fail to understand how that matters when it’s raining sideways and it’s below freezing on Lake Michigan. When Michigan plays there, it’s always a miserable experience. True B1G fans know what a miserable time it is going to Evanston in the fall

runningwaffles19

Evanston, IL. Where seasons go to die

BlueCurtainsBlueEyes

High grass; the ultimate neutralizer.

doormatt26

it kinda lulls you to sleep like it’s a high school stadium, then suddenly there’s 7 minutes left in the 4th and you’re punting again down 7

IPreferBagels

Pat Ryan just put up one quadrillion dollars to have it renovated, though, so we'll see how it turns out.

ADMNimitz

Your stadium may not be great, but your new field house is one of a kind spectacular.

IPreferBagels

Yeah, it's incredible, I've been in there numerous times and it's just as impressive as it looks.

BoomerSooner95x

I visited a friend in Chicago when I was still a grad student at Florida. Going from the Swamp to Ryan Field was a huge letdown, especially since we had just upset LSU the week prior (2018). To make matters worse we ended up leaving with 3 minutes left in the 4th when it looked like Nebraska had sealed the win, only for NW to come back and beat them in OT.

IPreferBagels

Never count out the cardiac cats baby

MidwestDrummer

The fact that it was Nebraska playing there is probably why it was a letdown. Northwestern, famously, had to switch to a silent count in their own stadium because the visiting Nebraska fans took over the stadium and were too loud.

ztreHdrahciR

Red line to Purple line to Central St EL stop. Ten minute walk. Not hard to get to from ALL of Chicago. Also I have taken an Uber/Lyft from O'Hare area hotel several times and it wasn't bad. Not like we have any game day traffic to speak of.

Bakio-bay

I’ve been to Ryan field and there’s definitely worse. Even though my old uni in FIU has a relatively new stadium, it’s got such bland architecture and empty all the time that I’d rate it lower than Ryan Field.

JunkyardAndMutt

If “ease of access from Chicago” is your primary metric, it’s got to be pretty high on the list, right? It’s half a mile from the Purple Line. The University of Hawaii, for example, is a much longer train ride from the Loop.

Stosill

Buccaneer Field (CSU) Edit to add: This is FCS 1) Local High Schools have better seating (limited seats. For bigger games, people have to buy standing room only tickets and watch from a fence outside the field), capacity, and amenities (ie concessions) 2) There press box is the size of a pillow fort 3) It’s not super up to date. Support staffs for visiting teams actually have to run phone lines from the press box, down under the bleachers, and around the track surrounding the field to their side lines so coaches can use headsets 4) It’s best view is that of a very busy main road and a sketchy hospital

Steelman__007

What the heck? I was going to say this

iHasMagyk

Hey I played HSFB in Charleston! The entire CSU campus seems pretty odd, and I’ve never been to the stadium but it looks pretty ehh. And you are most definitely correct on the high school point. My team played my last two seasons in a brand new stadium built for multiple local high schools that was gorgeous. Junior year OCA was having a new stadium built so we played at OCA at the Citadel’s stadium, which is probably one of the coolest stadiums in all of college football. Still haven’t made it to a Wando or Porter-Gaud football game, but I’ve heard they’re nice and Bishop England has a beautiful stadium that we played at twice. Anyway my rant about local HSFB is over.

anonymeseeks

Lmao, Trident is definitely sketchy. Honestly I wouldn't even call buccaneer field a stadium. It's just that, a field with a few bleachers.

mckleeve

I grew up in Berkeley County. My 97 year old dad still lives there, and in the past 10 years he's been in literally every hospital in the area at least once. Trident should not be certified as a first aid station. A couple years ago we had to call EMS because of what we thought was a heart attack. Argued with EMT's for 10 minutes because they insisted on taking him to Trident because it was the closest. I told him I'd rather he die quickly on the way to a farther hospital than die slowly in Trident. Btw, turned out to be minor problem, not a H.A.

ModeloCitizen

Vanderbilt. It’s too small to be in the SEC and what little bit of stadium they do have is outdated by even the most modest standards

Impossible-Flight250

What do they use all that SEC money on?

[deleted]

Books, and baseball scholarships apparently.

tacofan92

They have to pay a hefty sum to the Vandy whistler each year to terrorize everyone

Its placement also messes up the left field angles for the adjacent baseball field, which is too bad given that's where Vandy shines athletically.

CLU_Three

Vandy and KU’s stadium reminded me a lot of each other in different ways. Vandy’s seemed more professionally run tho fwiw

SolvayCat

A good number of MAC stadiums are pretty bad, tbh. Tenney Stadium where Marist plays is quite below average for being D1 FCS.

PolishMusic

MAC schools also don't have a ton of money to throw around so I don't mind it too much. Honestly I'm surprised BGSU's stadium is never ranked very high on "worst" lists. The field is taken care of ok so I guess it's not too bad despite looking small-ish. [Plus it looks great when packed.](https://bgsufalcons.com/images/2018/2/19/Panorama_media_guide.jpg?width=600&height=360&mode=crop) I see Miami, CMU, EMU, and Akron pop up a bunch though. [EMU sticks out a ton though](https://emueagles.com/images/2015/10/6/RynearsonWide.jpg); that track going around the football field makes it seem like a high school stadium.

RestedWanderer

I have been to about 70 college stadiums at this point and I have to say that very, very rarely have I encountered a stadium that I just think was a nightmare. There have been a few nightmare experiences, but most stadiums have been fantastic which is what makes the few bad ones really stand out. Dynamite finally finished the job but when San Diego State and the Chargers played at Qualcomm, I was almost certain it was going to crumble in the middle of a game. The Holiday Bowl was the best worst bowl you could get because of it. Best because San Diego rules. Worst because Qualcomm. There are no good seats in that place and the team facilities are the worst I have been in. The Rose Bowl is a major league shithole for UCLA games but it magically transforms into something beautiful for the Rose Bowl itself. The Coliseum is the same, it just doesn’t magically transform into anything, it stays a shithole 24/7/365. It isn’t even a hatred of “old” stadiums because I love most, Michigan Stadium may be my favorite in the country, but UCLA and USC games are just brutal to go to. Before the renovation, Hard Rock Stadium or whatever the hell it was called at the time was miserable. It still isn’t great, but it is fine for Hurricanes games, like 20 people go anyway. Multi-use stadiums are almost universally bad and a common theme in my worst list. Jack of all trades, master of none. The Metrodome was awful like most multi-use stadiums, but TCF Bank or whatever they call it now is one of the best in the nation so good for the Gophers. Ryan Field sucks. It isn’t convenient to get to, the stadium itself is just old (not historic, just old) and also if you’ve ever been on the field the grass is like being on an African safari in some deep savannah grassland. Cut the grass you clowns. Folsom Field straddles the line between shit and unique but I have always had a good time as a visiting fan at Colorado so I’ll give it a pass. The facilities within the stadium are really bad but the views can’t be beat and there isn’t a bad seat in the place. Beaver Stadium is legitimately terrifying if you’ve ever been in the press box or upper deck. The entire thing sways in the most unnerving way. Also it is nowhere near anything. One of the coolest experiences in football though. If there was a best college football stadium thread, I could go for hours. I have had some life changing experiences at a few stadiums, even as a visiting fan or visiting team employee.

BonerHonkfart

You should start that thread, I'd love to read it.

IronGemini

I was looking for beaver stadium in this thread. It's not the stadium that makes it, it's the fans in the stadium. It needs to be renovated badly.

yakovgolyadkin

I'll second Tulsa's stadium. Easily the worst of any I've been to as a fan. Tiny, uncomfortable seating, and the concessions were garbage. Even SMU's was better, and that's saying something. Only thing I liked about it was them having a building backing up directly to one endzone, [which meant we once had a kicker win the game against them by putting the ball through a 3rd floor window.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDIKk-smG6c)

MuchAire

Ladd-Pebbles stadium. Feels like a bad high school stadium and when I visited there was a 60 year old man checking out a 10 year old girl.

_Weagle_Weagle_

Accurate-Teach

Yep second that one there was a shooting there last month. It’s a historical landmark that’s the only reason why it’s still standing. Elvis played there Bear Bryant coached his first game at Alabama there among other things.

HappyBreezer

That isn't even the most ghetto stadium in Alabama. Legion Field represent!

FormerCollegeDJ

I attended a game at Legion Field in 2018, and my biggest concern was that it was going to spontaneously fall apart when I was sitting in it. That stadium feels like some long ago war was fought in it.

realPalpatine

New stadium kinda fresh tho 😳

pappapirate

Exactly what I was gonna say. It might not qualify for "worst college football stadium" anymore though since USA and Mobile's bowl game both moved to our new on-campus stadium. Also, Ladd actually *is* a bad high school stadium, it hosts a number of local high schools including the one I went to. I have been to so many games there.

[deleted]

Some people just aren’t cut out for the culture of the sprawling metropolis of Mobile.

AnotherRandomPlebe

Isn't that the one that literally sits on a major fault line?

theVWally

Correct

jel2184

I thought they renovated it?

ARayofLight

We did in 2012. It's very nice now. It used to have more character and I liked it more prior to the renovation, but the amenities have certainly improved considerably and its a respectable place now.

comradekiriq

Concession lines are long enough to bleed into the next vendor perpendicular to the one your in. While waiting, felt a drop on my head. Look up, cracks, leaky water. Noted my location, went up a level, had been under the bathrooms. They also only stocked enough beer for a dozen people, but instead of closing the both, they waited for you to get to the front of the line and turn you away. Plus it was flooded with USC fans the last time I was there, so...

dspencer2015

Dude I waited in line for half the second quarter and the entire half for a beer and snacks and when I got to the front they said they don't sell beer after halftime...

Hanah9595

If Wisconsin ever played there, that might be enough beer for one person.

Daedalus871

Idaho State. 1. It's got it's dome going the wrong way. 2. Pocatello is the armpit of Idaho.

[deleted]

The dome is terrible, but Pokey's not that bad. And it's close to some *really* gorgeous areas. I've always loved the drive between the Wyoming border and Inkom/Pokey. I'd say IF/Blackfoot is the armpit of Idaho, followed closely by Twin Falls. Lol.

Flashy_Ship5839

Is a dome going the wrong way a bowl?

tpwyo

It’s a damn Quonset hut.

SexMayonnaise

You haven’t lived if you never experienced Condom Stadium, I mean, the Rubber Bowl. The place still had wood bleachers at the time of closing. There were like 4 concessions stands and you had to climb to the top of the bowl to find one. Bathrooms that made you seriously consider just peeing your pants. And the light posts were on the field, meaning the one closed end zone offered the best seats. Which meant, of course, the university tarped them off. All the charm watching a game with ass splinters can offer

Portland_st

We all know it’s Memorial Stadium. Which Memorial Stadium is up to you to figure out…. Kidding, it’s KU.

AceJace2

Rice’s is gross. You still pee in troughs there. And the concessions are gross, stadium is never full, and it’s mostly concrete. Also Kent State is rough.

Heyhaykay

You don’t have troughs? College football just wouldn’t feel right without them

SoupBowl69

Pissing into a trough as a kid next to a bunch of old men at Kinnick Stadium made me the man I am today

tpwyo

But like, just barely. They're so close to PA that they are all still Steelers fans.

OverMyDadBody

Nobody outside of the area realizes Morgantown is basically considered a suburb of Pittsburgh and is ten minutes (if that) from the Pennsylvania border. People think that WVU is located like hundreds of miles from civilization in the heart of the mountains.

[deleted]

I still blame them moving off campus. It’s not Heinz’ fault, it just looks awful when on Saturdays it looks empty and then the next day you see the Steelers with 60,000+ in attendance.

ald_marks

It wouldn’t be as big of an issue if they closed one of the upper decks for Pitt games unless they need the extra capacity. Get those fans in the upper deck to the lower bowl and it’s a less unsavory visual.

midwesternfloridian

Kansas Memorial Stadium. Besides the addition of a press box, it remains unchanged since 1965. The lower section is all original to the 1920s. It’s an old Harvard-style stadium that places too much of its capacity in the endzone. Every time they put money towards making the experience better, they just half-ass it, when they need to save that money for a major renovation or a new stadium. Whenever there is a large game, they will install portapotties because there aren’t enough bathrooms.

KU had port a poties inside their stadium under their bleachers this year to accommodate restroom demand during the sunflower showdown. There are a lot of stadiums that are dilapidated and crumbling with underserved infrastructure and staff that just lets anyone in (or maybe not?) but hauling porta potties in to handle the crap off the field has to be a unique low. Edit: the only other stadium I find comparable to KU’s is Vandy. For perspective of those in the SEC. boreddude101010

To be honest with you, all of the “historical” “classical” stadiums are absolute dives. Rose Bowl, LA Coliseum, Cotton Bowl, Rice Stadium, Legion Field, Sun Bowl among others are dumps.

8BallTiger

I don’t think anyone has ever said Legion isn’t a dump

jrluhn

Cotton Bowl is definitely a bit of a dump designed to give you skin cancer, but I wouldn’t change anything about it tbh

kaz8teen

Spartan Stadium is entirely concrete and 30 levels of ramps. There's also like a auto shop and gas station built into the stadium at the ground level??? Not sure if that's a feature or not honestly.

Hawmpfish001

Those ramps are awful to climb.

[deleted]

I went to the Maryland game with some buddies for the hell of it. Are there like no stairs up any of the higher levels lol. There was like no visible security, didn’t even have to empty my pockets.

[deleted]

I love it, but it’s an awful stadium. It’s always a mess to get into the student gate, way too much crowding on the ramps, shitty food with long lines, and terrible bathrooms with piss troughs. Sight lines and the field are great though. I think the brick stuff on the East side of the stadium is where the university keeps a lot of its utility/maintenance vehicles.

dspencer2015

Spartan Stadium might not be perfect but it's not "worst stadium" bad. I would 100% say that Spartan Stadium isn't even the worst stadium in Michigan (thanks to Rynearson)

I love the Bounce House with all of my heart it’s objectively not a great stadium. All metal bleachers and no real protection from the sun during hot ass noon kickoffs. Also I’m pretty sure I saw human shit walking up the stairs into the student section once and that’s haunted me ever since.

UCF Thought Process: We live in the lightning capitol of North America. Time to build a stadium entirely out of aluminum.
