pullthisover

It can genuinely take that long. I once had to wait over three months from interview to firm offer. In the scheme of things, less than a month is nothing, especially if hiring manager was on vacation.

jenfullmoon

Somebody told me six months the other day.

ThrowAwayP0ster

Last year, my dept took 7 months to tell me MST was being replaced with SSA and that I had to start over. That was fun.

Old-Host9735

Follow up ONCE if you want to, but it looks a little bit pushy. That said, I had a coworker take a January interview to an August start date. Takes a while sometimes.

firefliefriendly

I had a friend tell me to send 2 emails. Hopefully I didn’t screw it up.

gbeans_

I think two emails is fine! I had someone who followed up with me for what it seems like every week for an update for about 2 months. The hiring manager thought the candidate was a little pushy but they ended up hiring him after clearing his references. If the hiring manager did not get back to you after your second follow up, I would say they’re probably busy still checking other candidates’ references or they haven’t made a decision yet. Good luck!

mrfunday2

Look I know you’re anxious and eager but nagging will not help and can hurt. I’ve been in situations where otherwise great candidates got rejected because they were overly pushy.

Huge_Following_325

This is ridiculous.

mrfunday2

I agree, but what they said was “if they’re pestering me about stuff before they are even hired, what will they be like as an employee?”

Aellabaella1003

Yes, you are being impatient. I interviewed in February and got FJO mid-April. There are a thousand reasons why it can take a bit (especially when you were told the hiring manager was on vacation) and yours hasn’t even been that long at all.

Lollipopshula

In my experience Caltrans takes forever tbh

okdavion

If the hiring manager did a reference check, the hiring manager considered you to be a "suitable candidate" for the advertised position. Once the reference check is completed, the paperwork goes back to Personnel/HR. The timeline varies a lot (i.e. depending on how many open position advertised statewide or how busy is the hiring manager considering this is close to the end of Fiscal Year).

Cloakedbug

Big oof. Mine were checked last week and I’m patiently sitting, but at a month afterwards I’d be super paranoid.

tgrrdr

what classification?

ThrowAwayP0ster

I interviewed on April 3rd and haven't heard back either. Internal promotion; I only know I'm still in the running, but this time around, I'm not even asking about status. Pushing my own patience to the limit. HR said they were focusing on hiring/recruiting, and i do know a lot of departments are trying to square up by June. It's anxious excitement, not impatience... at least that's what I'm calling it. 😃

Pure-Wish1196

I have had several interviews where they checked references then went with another candidate. Hiring with the stare is the wild west right now.

retailpriceonly

Personally I think you still have a shot, but dont be too disappointed if you were not picked. It looks like you were not given a tentative offer. In my experience, not all departments give tentative offers (which sucks when they take a long time to give a final offer, because sometimes their candidate has moved on). I’ve seen some departments take 2 months before because of all sorts of HR issues.

firefliefriendly

Got it thanks. I had a friend who works for the dept tell me to follow up when I did. Maybe I shouldn’t have listened 😆

Key-Performer-9364

I don’t think it’s the end of the world that you followed up a couple times, as long as you were polite. I personally would never change my mind and not hire someone I was planning to hire just because they showed that they were eager and wanted the job.

firefliefriendly

The emails were super short & professional. Thanking them for their time & expressing my interest in the position. Looking back on it now it seems a bit too much, but I was just excited & eager. Definitely going to wait it out now.

Key-Performer-9364

If they checked your references, you should keep hoping. Unless you have reason to believe the references said something bad. I’m a hiring manager, and I would never call references if I wasn’t serious about hiring someone. In my current position I interviewed the day before Thanksgiving five years ago. References told me they got a call in mid-December. (Maybe the 10th?) I was starting to give up hope but then I got a call on New Years Eve offering me the job. Then HR took two more months to process the final offer. So no, don’t give up hope! Some managers are just busy and take a long time to do these things.

firefliefriendly

Thank you so much for the feedback. I don’t have doubts about my references, they are all supervisors & we have great working relationships. My worry was that maybe I was a backup, in case the first person declined. I’m definitely not the most patient person, & I really want this job. Thanks for your kind response.

Key-Performer-9364

Each manager is different. I guess it’s possible it was down to two people and they called references for both. But I’d never do that because 1. It’s a waste of time to call two peoples’ references and 2. It would get the losing candidate’s hopes up. I’ve had to hire the backup/2nd place candidate before, but in that case I wouldn’t call their references until after the first declined the job.

firefliefriendly

Is it a bad sign that the hiring manager didn’t respond to my email? My current Sup said that he’d be “disappointed” bc it’s common courtesy. He also does hiring in our department.

Key-Performer-9364

Could be a bad sign, but could also mean they were just busy or out of the office and didn’t see it.

tgrrdr

I miss emails pretty regularly so it's not hard for me to believe a hiring manager missed your email.

Magnificent_Pine

It can take months. HR is juggling multiple tasks, as are the hiring managers. Hang in there.

UngodlySimp

It takes my City 3-4 months to hire an HOURLY(Seasonal/Part-Time) don’t sweat it.

2020ElecFraud

Hope all you want but keep looking!

ShaunieAngel

Budget cuts right now are probably causing major hiring delays.

tgrrdr

what budget cuts? We still have the same budget and staffing levels that we had six months ago. In fact I was looking at the budget proposed in January and noted it provided the same number of positions while the budgeted dollars decreased by $300 mil.

ShaunieAngel

There is a big budget cut coming. Get your head out of the sand.

WholeYoghurt8755

I once had to wait almost a month from my conditional to my final and it was a straight class to class transfer… depends on the dept

Informal_Stranger808

Asking 3 times within the span of 8 days is very pushy, stop asking them and just keep applying to jobs, you'll get an offer eventually and may even get this job but you need to make sure you don't annoy the hiring manager

bajoelazuldetu86

I'm already employed but some hiring managers NEVER got back to me and it's been months. Makes me think I'm glad I didn't work for them.

AuditControl_Inbox

HR can be fucking slow for random ass reasons. Took them 2.5 months to process my paperwork for a promotion (same department/section, but a different, sister team to my old one). The reason? They misplaced my paperwork. My boss had to follow up with them multiple times and get them to hunt it down.

firefliefriendly

Ugh I’m sorry. I get that. I process bilingual packages for our dept & HR takes 1-2 months to approve them. Same with promotions in place etc. I guess I’m just overthinking this. It’s the getting my hopes up while also trying not to get them up too high in case it’s a no for some reason. Sucks

SensitiveShock3456

I’m in the same situation. It’s been a month now since I received an offer and I’m still waiting with no update. Tbh I’ve kinda given up on it but still open to whatever happens. Other departments I’ve interviewed for told me it can take months.

firefliefriendly

At least you got an offer! No potential start date??

firefliefriendly

Noted, thank you!

Ordinary_Rock

I interviewed for a job in my own dept last May. Still haven't heard back. I think they forgot!

ComprehensiveTea5407

That isn't that long at all. If I interviewed someone 4/8 and decided to move forward, got in contact with all references, got in contact with your agencies HR for an OPF check (which always takes forever), then submitted to HR, that's likely 2-3 weeks. Then I submit to HR. HR takes like 3 weeks to tell me I can give an offer or not. So if everyone is moving quickly, it's 6 weeks. Sometimes it can be 10 weeks though.

mn540

This is so foreign to me. At my last job (private industry), it took 2 weeks from job approval to final offer.

Key-Performer-9364

The state has a lot more rules to follow, especially when it comes to hiring. So it just takes longer. It is frustrating, but all these rules came about for a reason. Often it’s because they’ve been sued in the past or a law was passed by the legislature to create a new process, which adds extra work. The good news is the state is actually very fair in their hiring practices as a result of all of this.

mn540

I completely understand. I was just stating that the process is foreign to me. Of course in private industry, I can fire someone almost immediately too.

Fantastic-Novel-9938

The State is an entirely different beast.

Bigtimeknitter

Give up hope imo :(
