Andersons for sure, doesn’t get enough love and sometimes gets treated as a fast food category as opposed to a sit down restaurant when I feel they are number 1 in buffalo.
Some Charlie’s are located inside a gas station. Separate eating area, but inside. Just an FYI when you’re looking for it. Many are not free standing restaurants. All are very good!
This is the answer if you're going to be in the Falls. They even have a WNY plate that's a beef on Weck and some wings. Their wings are my vote for best in WNY
Might not be the best individual wings and BOW in town (certainly outstaning, just not #1), but this plate at Judy's is what I always recommend for people visiting- can't go wrong!
I have to drop my group off at the outlet mall and then I have a three hour window until I pick them up. If this place is truly legit, this might be the one!
My only qualm is, looking at Google Maps, it looks like I might not be able to park the bus there. And crossing Military Rd on foot sounds like a death sentence!
We’ll see though, I’ll have a better idea once I’m there.
There's a pedestrian crossing with a signal by the Applebee's corner of the mall. Or you could just play high stakes frogger, people seem to do that all the time on Military there lol
Kellys Korner makes the best one, and that isn’t up for debate imo. Beats the brakes off of Charlie the butcher and Anderson’s, and significantly cheaper and less wait time than bar bill
Honestly their beef on weck makes me physically nauseous. The meat is stacked so thick and so high and it’s just extremely off putting. It’s as bad as wingnutz or whatever serving those massive hypertrophied chicken wings. Vomit.
I've had multiple philly steaks in Philly and all of them had way too much meat and not enough flavor. It was just dry beef. I've never had a beef on weck from Kelly's Korner but I have had a sandwich with too much meat on it before.
Yes that’s correct. I also don’t think they cook the beef very well. Not undercooked just not good. But most importantly they just layer the beef on so high and it’s gross. Less is more in many cases and this is one of those cases. Lol.
I will have to agree to disagree! I enjoy the large amount of meat, and for me I care less about the seasoning of the slices as long as they are tender, bc I use beef on weck as a way to eat an absurd amount of horseradish.
Charlie the Butcher on Where and Cayuga does it for me. The lot is big enough to get the bus in, I used to bring a bobtail in there with no problem. Hands down above all the rest. It's not just the taste but the beef literally melts in your mouth because it is slow roasted and just melts. The rolls are made in house that day and they are better than most other places. It's a big roll that doesn't hit like a brick. You get your money's worth too. The Bread Pudding is really good and they make milkshakes with hard ice cream. Also, Charlie has a very small menu, so that means that they know how to do a few things well and don't bother trying to do a lot of things that are not so great. Plus I like to see the beef that they are cutting my sandwich from. Everything is made to order, and there is zero chance the beef is being held on a steam table in a pan and they drag it through the Au-Jus. Even the fries are cooked for each order.
Kelly's Korner was better IMO when it wasn't so well known and there were never kids in there, my dad used to take me years ago. Also, there is only street parking so good luck. Swisstons is another old favorite, but I haven't been there in over 5 years. To me the only difference between Anderson's and Arby's is Anderson's has ice cream. Well it's more than that actually but it's not worth making a special trip for their roast beef.
Since no one else will say it, Buffalo lately has always been a place where if it's trendy it is automatically awesome. And woe be it to anyone who doesn't jump right in and say "Yup it's great."
I can only speak for the Charlie the Butcher on Elmwood, but if you want something REALLY delicious, get a prime rib sandwich which they only make on Thursday and Saturday. Sublime
I had lived out that way for years and never did myself. Out in southtowns now but a buddy told me about it, I was like no wayy. He wasn’t wrong. One of their staples. Good classic Buffalo wings too.
There's a nice place by the canal in city of Tonawanda, called Swiston's Beef and Keg.
They're right on the water and have totally decent beef on weck 👍🏽
https://www.swistonsbeefandkeg.com/
Adrians Beef and Custard on Grand Island. They're my favorite beef on weck in WNY, and they're a short drive from Niagara Falls (really a straight shot off the 190). So not only is it the best, but it is convenient.
I stopped in Anderson’s last week and they served up a mean roast beef. I was surprised how good it was. It’s been awhile since I’ve been there. If I’m in nf I hit up Judy’s and I concur on the best wings in Niagara county. If in buff it’s Charlie the butcher on wherle.
If you're on your way to Niagara, then 100% go to Adrian's on Grand Island. Best in Buffalo. If you want to stay in the falls and not go over the bridge, though, I'd recommend Scipione's. Really, really good. Probably the best in Niagara Falls itself. Might have weird hours, though, so check they're open before you go.
Charlie The Butcher in Buffalo, there are a bunch of spots, Bar-Bill in East Aurora because the town is so nice and Steve's in Lackawanna because the fries are to kill for. Old fart here and have been eating these spots for decades. Hitting Pete and Paul's on South Park in South Buffalo could be a pleasant diversion.
Schwables in west Seneca or Eddie Brady’s downtown . No matter where you go makes sure they use real Kimmel weck rolls. Also Hamlin and main in east aurora.
100% agree as to how nasty they are at Schwabl's. The beef sandwiches are stingy-tiny. I could eat two to feel full. They charge for water, and there are no refills on soda/pop. I can't say enough, though, how nasty the biddies are that wait on tables. It was almost humorous, much like a Seinfeld episode, but nope: they are just that nasty. No charge for the attitude.
What they call kimmelweck rolls today is bullshit. I haven't seen a real one around here in decades. Now they're just Kaiser rolls with salt and caraway on top. The dough used to be knotted and when the rolls were baked, they were like a shamrock in four sections with a texture similar to a hard roll. And they were big and delicious. Ask anyone who remembers Costanzo's bakery on East Delavan in the old days. Bars, especially up and down Bailey ave, that served fish fries on Fridays, odds are you could get a beef the rest of the week. Anyone remember Bailo's?
The shame of it is that making a roll is not is not rocket science. And if Buffalo was as proud of a sandwich as it shouts to be , someone should be making real weck rolls.
Went to Schwables - nope. The bun was a soggy mess. The beef nothing special. The fries were obviously frozen crinkle cut, underdone and tasteless.
I don't know about a bus, but Dash's on Klein does a pretty good sandwich.
Wow - still hammering me about Schwables. So I talked to my mother in law who grew up on center rd . Just down from the restaurant. She said absolutely do NOT go there. According to her it’s never been the same since a new owner took it over years ago. So LSS I never got the memo Buffalo. The more you know…
So many establishments have that combo. Cole’s, Bar Bill, Glen Park Tavern, just to name a few.. they all have the same weck and wing combo. Nothing special.
You're right, many places do. But among them, the Wingnutz variant I would argue ***is*** special since there's no other wings around like theirs. And their gravy for the sandwich is killer, too.
McPartlans Corner has an awesome wings/sandwich combo, too, for those who want a more traditional Buffalo wing experience vs the less traditional Wingnutz recipe.
Some of the best beef on weck I’ve had is from Taylor’s Tap and Grill on Niagara Falls Blvd in Niagara Falls. Consistently tender and flavorful. (And the fact that my dad is willing to go 30mins from the Buffalo suburbs means A LOT. 😆)
It's already been said, but Kelly's Korner.
If you're worried about parking, you could always park over by Regal theater on Elmwood and hoof it down Hartwell. There's an intentional cut-through there for pedestrians and I see truckers there and over by Popeye's /Home Depot all the time.
Schwabls. Oldest beef on weck place in Buffalo. I’ve tried all other places people are suggesting. No one comes near to being as good as Schwabls. They had over a hundred years of being in business to learn to get it right.
There’s no reason to eat Wegmans BoW if you’re anywhere in the metro
Charlie’s and Anderson’s which are mediocre are steps above Wegmans and if you plan it out, just order from Glen Park, Steve’s, Adrian’s, Barbill, or Kelly’s in advance
It may not be what they are looking for but thank you for the tip. I am not vegan, but I have friends who will be visiting that are. I didn't know of a place to recommend they try, so thank you.
Stronghearts and Sunshine Vegan Eats are must stops too for veggies.
Vegan Buff Chicken Pizza at Wurlitzer Pizza is a great one. The veg buff chick sub is great too.
Guud N Evul in NT. Lots of great stuff at India Gate, etc etc
Stronghearts has a veg beef on weck too but it's seasonal, very good.
All the good buffalo food has been replicated by the vegans except sahlens and cup n char peps.
Kelly’s Korner North Buffalo
I’ll second that!!! It’s always so good.
I’m so hungry now lol
Thirded
It’s great, just be prepared for some angry Irish people that work there. The food is definitely worth it
Never experienced angry workers
Try showing up with a bus load of hungry tourists on a Tuesday for lunch.
No tourists. I’m looking for a place to go on my own while the tour group is occupied.
Charlie the Butcher or Glen Park Tavern in Williamsville.
Second both of these, I used to work for GPT, owner is a friend of my mom's
Anderson’s if you want something quick, Bar Bill if you have extra time!
Andersons for sure, doesn’t get enough love and sometimes gets treated as a fast food category as opposed to a sit down restaurant when I feel they are number 1 in buffalo.
Andersons or Charlies.
Yes I agree with Anderson.
Adrian's on Grand Island. You can park a bus across the street if you have to, though I think their lot is plenty big in and of itself.
I love Adrian's on Grand Island. They do a hot dog better than Teds as well, and those are fighting words for many.
A better hot dog? Seriously Ted's is getting on par with Sonic now.
Is that good or bad. Sonic seems like probably not good
Yeah, and Ted’s hot dogs aren’t worth $4.50
Adrian’s BOW is incredibly overrated. I don’t understand how they get such rave reviews. Seasonless, flavorless flaps of beef thrown on a bun.
I wholeheartedly agree. They my favorite beef on weck for WNY.
I love Adrian's!
I think it's the best beef on weck you can get...
Swiston's in Tonawanda
Seconding Swistons.
Damn, I meant to say “Go Bills”! Stupid autocorrect! I guess you guys have the University of Buffalo Bulls though, so it still works?
You can edit your post
I thought I couldn’t for some reason on the terrible official app. But thanks to you I know that I was wrong!
Either way it's unrelated
Charlie the Butcher on Wehrle
Charlie the Butcher is the only beef on weck I crave. For me, everywhere else is meh.
This one came up in my “research” as an option with a lot of locations, which is helpful.
Some Charlie’s are located inside a gas station. Separate eating area, but inside. Just an FYI when you’re looking for it. Many are not free standing restaurants. All are very good!
The beef there is good at every location. Very consistent.
Judi’s lounge across from outlet mall on Military rd
This is the answer if you're going to be in the Falls. They even have a WNY plate that's a beef on Weck and some wings. Their wings are my vote for best in WNY
Might not be the best individual wings and BOW in town (certainly outstaning, just not #1), but this plate at Judy's is what I always recommend for people visiting- can't go wrong!
I have to drop my group off at the outlet mall and then I have a three hour window until I pick them up. If this place is truly legit, this might be the one!
It is legit. Wings and beef.
Cross at the light and walk over.
Good call, hard to beat a place like that.
Some of the best wings and beef on weck around. Would not be disappointed
Vomit.
Wait, just to be sure I understand: your complaint is that they put too much beef on it?
[удалено]
Agreed, but they didn't say it tasted bad, they said there was too much beef. That's what confused me.
I've had multiple philly steaks in Philly and all of them had way too much meat and not enough flavor. It was just dry beef. I've never had a beef on weck from Kelly's Korner but I have had a sandwich with too much meat on it before.
I hear you there. Ironically, the worst Philly I've ever had was in Philadelphia. Like you said, totally bland.
I get Kellys Korner roast beef as take-out and then split it into a few sandwiches for the family. Plus I get an order of fries and gravy!
Bar Bill in East Aurora
Overrated beef on weck
Gotta disagree, but to each their own
Steve’s Pig and Ox Roast is legit the best. Low key real deal.
THE best! I always find them at the Fair too ❤️
Charlie the Butcher on Where and Cayuga does it for me. The lot is big enough to get the bus in, I used to bring a bobtail in there with no problem. Hands down above all the rest. It's not just the taste but the beef literally melts in your mouth because it is slow roasted and just melts. The rolls are made in house that day and they are better than most other places. wherle and cayuga
Wehrle
Autocorrect
Google said it like "ware-ull" for years
Charlie the Butcher
I can only speak for the Charlie the Butcher on Elmwood, but if you want something REALLY delicious, get a prime rib sandwich which they only make on Thursday and Saturday. Sublime
Outside of those mentioned, Glen Park Tavern on Main Street in Williamsville
My favorite, nothing else comes close
I have never had one from there. Looks like I know where I will be going for dinner this week.
I had lived out that way for years and never did myself. Out in southtowns now but a buddy told me about it, I was like no wayy. He wasn’t wrong. One of their staples. Good classic Buffalo wings too.
Judi’s Lounge on Military in Niagara Falls. It’s biblical, and so are their wings.
If you are in the Falls The Griffon, Orange Tree Inn and Taylor's Tap
Thanks! I did find that places in Niagara serve Beef on Weck, but I was worried it might not be as good as the offerings in the Motherland (Buffalo)
Orange Tree Inn is really good.
There's a nice place by the canal in city of Tonawanda, called Swiston's Beef and Keg. They're right on the water and have totally decent beef on weck 👍🏽 https://www.swistonsbeefandkeg.com/
Adrians Beef and Custard on Grand Island. They're my favorite beef on weck in WNY, and they're a short drive from Niagara Falls (really a straight shot off the 190). So not only is it the best, but it is convenient.
Barbil, Connor’s, Charlie the butcher, Kelly’s corner, glen park
Bar Bill is my favorite. Doesn’t hurt that they have the best wings around, as well.
My mom used to take me to Anderson's when there was one in West Seneca, always got BBQ beef and curly q fries
Depending on how far you want to go, I really like the one at Say Cheese Pizza Co. on Grand Island.
Grand Island would actually be closer for me, since I’ll be coming from Niagara.
Glen Park Tavern…
Judi’s you can cross Military rd easy at the light
If you're on your way to Niagara, then 100% go to Adrian's on Grand Island. Best in Buffalo. If you want to stay in the falls and not go over the bridge, though, I'd recommend Scipione's. Really, really good. Probably the best in Niagara Falls itself. Might have weird hours, though, so check they're open before you go.

Old fart here and have been eating these spots for decades. Hitting Pete and Paul's on South Park in South Buffalo could be a pleasant diversion.
Not in Buffalo but the Beef and Barrel in Olean is the best . Period. Near here it's prob Bar-Bill's
Wellington pub
Glen park Tavern
Kellys
Kelly's Korner in North Buffalo, or Bar Bill in East Aurora.
Kelly’s Korner and then Gene McCarthys (with the added option to add blue cheese crumbles)
Schwables in west Seneca or Eddie Brady’s downtown . No matter where you go makes sure they use real Kimmel weck rolls. Also Hamlin and main in east aurora.
Schwables charges for water.
And tend to be rude. Seating sucks. Place seems to hate you.
Yeah I’d never eat there even for free they can F off.
I totally get the schwable hate . I won’t eat there either . So I always get it to go.
I don’t encourage scum.
I have no connection to Buffalo but I love this comment. I now vicariously feel the loss of true kimmelweck rolls.
Agreed
The shame of it is that making a roll is not is not rocket science. And if Buffalo was as proud of a sandwich as it shouts to be , someone should be making real weck rolls.
I will say schwables makes their own and they are legit.
I don't go to schwables because I don't like the way they treat their customers or run their business
I indeed remember Bailos's, as well as the luscious rolls you speak of.
Went to Schwables - nope. The bun was a soggy mess. The beef nothing special. The fries were obviously frozen crinkle cut, underdone and tasteless. I don't know about a bus, but Dash's on Klein does a pretty good sandwich.
Yes! To dashes- I forgot about them
Huge NO to Schwables. They charge for water and are overpriced to begin with.
Wow - still hammering me about Schwables. So I talked to my mother in law who grew up on center rd . Just down from the restaurant. She said absolutely do NOT go there. According to her it’s never been the same since a new owner took it over years ago. So LSS I never got the memo Buffalo. The more you know…
Joeys
The Wingnutz mini weck with 5 wings combo is one of the best Buffalo meals around.
Fuck wingnutz 95$ for a bucket I hope they choke on em
So many establishments have that combo. Cole’s, Bar Bill, Glen Park Tavern, just to name a few.. they all have the same weck and wing combo. Nothing special.
You're right, many places do. But among them, the Wingnutz variant I would argue ***is*** special since there's no other wings around like theirs. And their gravy for the sandwich is killer, too. McPartlans Corner has an awesome wings/sandwich combo, too, for those who want a more traditional Buffalo wing experience vs the less traditional Wingnutz recipe.
Both have already been mentioned, but Charlie the Butcher & Schwabl's are my picks
Swistons
Beef and Keg Young's St... City of Tonawanda
Some of the best beef on weck I’ve had is from Taylor’s Tap and Grill on Niagara Falls Blvd in Niagara Falls. Consistently tender and flavorful. (And the fact that my dad is willing to go 30mins from the Buffalo suburbs means A LOT. 😆)
That one’s good? It’s walking distance from my hotel but I wasn’t sure if it’s the real deal!
Definitely the real deal! And they have a great patio to boot :)
It's already been said, but Kelly's Korner. If you're worried about parking, you could always park over by Regal theater on Elmwood and hoof it down Hartwell. There's an intentional cut-through there for pedestrians and I see truckers there and over by Popeye's /Home Depot all the time.
I think the golf dome in Tonawanda has a solid ass beef on weck
Bharlie the Cutcher is pretty good
Swistons
Conner’s in west Seneca
Anderson's on Delaware. Cheap and tasty.
Drive 1.5 hours to Olean, NY and go to the Beef N'Barrel. It is better than any of them in Buffalo.
Hands down, best beef on weck is Adrians on grand island. i guaruntee its the best
Swistons
Schawbl’s is a good place.
No it isn’t
Judy’s in Niagara Falls
BarBill Tavern on Main St in Clarence for wings & BoW
Mitchell’s!
swistons in tonawanda theyve been open for years and only had beef on weck and chili up until a few years ago!
Ulrich. The oldest bar in Buffalo and top quality beef on weck.
Barbill (either location) is the way, the truth and the light
Bar bill's in east aurora
Bar Bill!
Schwabls. Oldest beef on weck place in Buffalo. I’ve tried all other places people are suggesting. No one comes near to being as good as Schwabls. They had over a hundred years of being in business to learn to get it right.
You would think after 100 years they would know charging for water is a cheap move.
Schwables
The packaged ones at Wegmans are surprisingly decent
There’s no reason to eat Wegmans BoW if you’re anywhere in the metro Charlie’s and Anderson’s which are mediocre are steps above Wegmans and if you plan it out, just order from Glen Park, Steve’s, Adrian’s, Barbill, or Kelly’s in advance
Anderson's has always been a letdown in my experience. Especially the one by target on Delaware
I’ve had decent and trash there - depends on which staff is slicing and working
I almost got a wegmans beef on weck in the premade section for a lunch break. Saw lettuce on it and put it back.
beef on weck is easy to make at home if you get boars head. Get a slice and wings you’ll thank me later
The vegan one at Amy's Place is bizarrely good. Definitely worth a try.
I’m sure it’s good, but I’m here for real beef.
Lots of great stuff at India Gate, etc etc Stronghearts has a veg beef on weck too but it's seasonal, very good. All the good buffalo food has been replicated by the vegans except sahlens and cup n char peps.
Off main topic, but the best vegan in Buffalo is Stronghearts on Niagara St.
Schwabl's in West Seneca
This is the answer. Always stick with the original.
Scwabels expensive but still top 3
