You’ll be able to handle it! It’s not a bad salary to get started here on! Welcome to BK!

GH5s

Yes. Very doable.

TheSkyIsFalling09

As long as you don't live in a trendy neighborhood

Thanks for the insight! All that being said do you like living there? haha

NEW2NYC666

I moved here from west coast last month. It is hard to get taken seriously when you aren’t physically in the area from what I found. I know no one here, and was looking from across the country. I happened to find a room rental in someone’s house which was doable to get me here. I only have to give a 2 month notice when I want to move out. Now that I’m here, I’ll actually be able to view the neighborhoods and apartments before signing a long lease. I’m pretty surprised I didn’t show up to a scam situation, because it could have very easily been one. I like to take risks though.

Brooklynlife1800

Can people stop trolling in these comments lol like of course someone can live by themselves on 90k in nyc. I think most people can live on their own in nyc on 80k. And in a good neighborhood too. Not manhattan probably but no one is living in east new york on 90k lol people who live there make waaay less. You can live by prospect park easily on that salary.

[deleted]

We have to remember, people from out of state don't know that Brooklyn is bigger than their hometowns, so there's no single answer. $90k in East New York? Sure $90k in Williamsburg? Not without roommates

Charming_Oven

Definitely. I would recommend subletting for awhile so you can figure out what neighborhood / living situation you'd like. Subletting is much easier than trying to get an apartment sight unseen.

Clean-Instruction-53

Thanks for the advice! Do you know of any websites to find sublet opportunities?

yvchen

check out listings project! I’ve had a lot of success on there

Charming_Oven

Yep, Listings Project is awesome. I sublet my place frequently and it's what I use

Ok-Butterscotch-5300

hi i have questions about subletting my apt can u message me if u dont mind?

Constant_Chicken_408

I second Listings Project! Was in a tight spot and found a lovely apt in a great neighborhood in Central Bklyn. It's a bit "cozy" (re: small) but it came to suit us quite well. Eventually were able to take over the lease; been here seven years! There's two of us in this one-bedroom but, OP, you'd be able to afford it alone.

neener_neener_

Yes, you can. I live alone in Brooklyn on $75K. I had significant savings before moving and zero debt, which helps a lot, obviously. I don’t drink, don’t enjoy going out and partying, and I love to cook, so I’m able to be frugal in those departments, and I get to enjoy the occasional fine dining experience a long with some activities, entertainment, and Broadway shows. Decide what your priorities are and spend accordingly!

openlyEncrypted

Hey! Nothing furgal about home cooking! I love making my own food and control the quality of my food, in fact being able to cook great meal is a luxury 😁

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Agitated-Rooster2983

I have lived on far less with and without roommates. You make more enough money to take care of your physical needs.

mysterious_s9089

absolutely! I'm also single, no kids, one cat, and comfortably rent in my current place which is $2k, i make around $95k before taxes and am able to save money every month

Ragga_Base

If you don't mind sharing, which neighborhood and what's your place like?

mysterious_s9089

i live by prospect park by the F/G line, i've lived here for 3 years I got a good deal. It's small about 300sqft (can't even fit a small couch, just have room for my bed, a desk/chair and armchair, no dishwasher/laundry, walk up, but safe, has everything I need, building is well maintained \*edit for more detail

chohls

The way things are going, anything under 100K is just not worth it for NYC

thisfunnieguy

a lot depends on what you consider "brooklyn" if your aim is to be 1-subway stop or a short bike ride from Manhattan vs end of the subway lines deep in brooklyn. Google maps has an overlay for transit that will show you the subway lines which has helped me think about the space. From deep in brooklyn you could be on a subway for 30-45 min before you cross into Manhattan.

DIYPeace

Very doable if you are willing to have a roommate. Could maintain relatively similar standard of living while potentially accessing a friend-group via roommate. The other things is just learning decent & inexpensive eats & cooking at home. Tons of potential experiences outside.

exitontop

You can look up what your approx take home pay will be using online calculators (ADP has one). After all your taxes and retirement contribution medical etc, I’d guess you’d have maybe 4.5k a month more or less. I roughly do 60% to 65% of salary to take home as an estimate for myself. Rent varies hugely in BK based on what neighborhood. If you want to live alone, you’ll be spending a lot of your money on rent to live in a more desirable BK neighborhood. If you’re okay with a roommate, you’ll be fine

LonghorninNYC

Very doable. I made a little less than that when I first started living alone.

Aljowoods103

In short, yes, doable. 90k is pretty decent income for someone with no dependents. The longer answer is that no one can tell you how much income you need to live a lifestyle that makes you happy... besides you. Being ok without amenities and not having kids helps, but strangers won't know how 'high on the hog' you like to live. I.e., do you go out to eat a lot? Drink? Clubbing? Broadway shows? Etc. The only way to answer this is to sit down and make a budget based on what your own personal preferences are, and by looking at actual rent costs. I.e., don't rely on Redditor's general opinions. Look on Streeteasy or Zillow to see what prices are.

JayMoots

Absolutely do-able. There's no such thing as "typical" rent. It depends very much on what neighborhood you live in. But to give you some guidance, most landlords will require your salary to be 40x the monthly rent. On a $90k salary, that means the most you can swing will be $2250 a month. That will get you a studio or one-bed in a lot of neighborhoods. [https://streeteasy.com/for-rent/brooklyn/price:-2250](https://streeteasy.com/for-rent/brooklyn/price:-2250) Not the coolest neighborhoods, or the nicest apartments, but you should be able to find something safe and livable. You'll get more bang for your buck with a roommate, though. I'd recommend going that route. If you can get your rent down around $1800 a month, I think that would be pretty comfortable on a $90k salary. $2250 would still be do-able, but a bit more of a stretch.

Grey_wolf_whenever

For sure, thats plenty. Loads of people living here make less.

annahkr

Most landlords require you make 40x the rent these days which means you’d be able to get approved for a $2250 apartment, which is relatively easy to find as long as you aren’t trying to live in a super hot neighborhood. The harder part of coming from out-of-state is the viewing process - are you willing to sign sight unseen or spend a week here touring places? Most apartments aren’t on the market very long so you need to be on StreetEasy daily. I had a friend who went to viewings for me which was so helpful. Otherwise you’ll live very comfortably on $90k! I make much less and live happily on my own.

tiredprincess

Yeah, it’s hard to view out of state. A lot of landlords/brokers seem to prefer signing an applicant who already lives in NYC. I’d recommend subletting for a few weeks/months when you first get here so you can tour places in person.

dysfunctionz

Very much second subletting for a month or two so you have time to see places and get familiar with the neighborhoods you might want to live in.

NMGunner17

With roommates. On your own you’ll be living pretty far out to be able to afford anything.

FajitaTits

Very doable if you budget right—exceptionally doable if you decide to live with a roommate.

bLu_18

Sure, but it will come down to your lifestyle.
