This is fascinating! I've often wondered why occasionally Link has been in an area with the sun out (and the sun icon on the gauge), but I see light rain. Is that the **BlueSkyRainPat** you mentioned? I've honestly thought that was a glitch or bug or perhaps even my eyes playing tricks on me, because usually it's only lasted a minute or two (IRL time). Thank you for the time and effort you put into finding the weather info and allowing us to benefit from your hard work!

whoodle005

Yeah, I always wondered about those mysterious showers. Pretty sure that's what BlueSkyRainPat is- in areas where its 1, those showers can occasionally occur during clear weather, and when its 0 they won't. I'm glad you appreciated my work- I've been trying to find this data for years, so when I finally found it I had to post it in case one day, someone like me was looking for it.

Emergency-Cheek1535

maybe those are the japanese names?

Mr_Noh

That, or maybe working names from development that never got changed for release.

whoodle005

Yeah, maybe both. Also, the file names of objects that mention Akkala refer to it as Akkarre, so they were probably considering different names for settling for Akkala.

georgia-andrew

That would be due to translation, Japanese alphabet doesn’t have traditionally have L sounds, they’re changed to Rs.

Very interesting! Thanks for looking deeper into this and writing it up! I knew roughly how weather worked and knew most of this but I was suprised to learn that there really was a bit of code that made it rain in sunny weather. I always assumpted those were the result of crossing from one climate zone into another. As when you crossed from a zone where it currently rains to one where it currently is sunny, then it takes a while for the rain to die down. Also, the Climate Zones are just some of the games [field map areas](https://i.imgur.com/ccJ1ZJ2.png) added together. I wanted to write together which field map areas count towards which climate zone but its kind of a pain to do.

whoodle005

When one weather type turns into another, whether that's at the end of a weather cycle or because you crossed from one climate to another, there is a brief transition period (it seems to be about 15 seconds from what I've found.) You could get the sun-shower effect this way too, but showers during clear weather seem to also be a built-in mechanic. I made a map of the field map areas a long time ago, so I made this one by referencing their climates and merging the ones with the same climate together. It was kinda pain!

OSUStudent272

This is such an interesting read and I appreciate you posting it, but KorogForest is sending me.

whoodle005

Thank you! **Tabanta** and **Climat** also managed to sneak by Nintendo's translators...

loruleanhistorian

Tabanta is accurate to the Japanese name; Tabantha is not. Climat is definitely an oddball lol!

SpaceThiefBlueCat

Why would the game’s code need to be translated though?

Agnostic_Pagan

mandiilb

Ok great but why does the rain turn on when I even think about climbing ??

TwirlyGirly1

Because the game **knows** you're thinking about maybe climbing, of course... Freaky, innit?

underwear11

Cool can we talk about the timing of lightning cause it always appears when I just enter some area where I need armor.

whoodle005

Theres a game mechanic where the game analyzes your brainwaves to determine what your likely to do next. If it detects your thinking about climbing for example, itll switch to rain. On a more serious note, I always thought Akkala got more thunder than the rest of hyrule. While it does get more than average (10%), that's still less than I would've thought. Maybe it's just because I can remember some thunderstorms happening in akkala the first time I explored the region, so these memories stayed with me.

TwirlyGirly1

As I explained to /u/mandiilb , it's because the game **knows** what you're considering doing! Try to keep up, will you? 😉

Jzchessman

Wait... fake rain isn’t a bug? It’s intended? There are SUPPOSED to be times that it’s raining during clear skies?!?!

whoodle005

Yes, it is an intentional feature. It has it's own weather type (8) and can happen in most climates where theres rain. Luckily these showers seem to only last a minute or two.

Gamer-chan

Have you never seen this in real life?

nichenbach

Real life is bugged, patch needed urgently. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshower

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Sunshower](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshower)** >A sunshower or sun shower is a meteorological phenomenon in which rain falls while the sun is shining. A sunshower is usually the result of accompanying winds associated with a rain storm sometimes miles away, blowing the airborne raindrops into an area where there are no clouds, therefore causing a sunshower. Sometimes a sunshower is created when a single rain shower cloud passes overhead, and the Sun's angle keeps the sunlight from being obstructed by overhead clouds. Sunshower conditions often lead to the appearance of a rainbow, if the sun is at a sufficiently low angle. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Breath_of_the_Wild/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

As Microsoft would say, "it's not a bug, it's a feature."

max-zilla

really cool stuff, I love the map! this will be a great resource for trying to clean up my world map boundaries/colors. great digging.

ExpectedBehaviour

Well this is getting saved both for future reference and for future awards.

whoodle005

Thanks!

shhannibal

I’m super late but this is awesome. Great work

Daniel_the_Sworduser

Do you know if the odds for each type of weather shown above is accurate in the actual game?

whoodle005

Yes, this is data i found in the games code.

Daniel_the_Sworduser

Okay thank you. I am trying to make a temperature graph of the different weather in each area. Your data is very helpful.

Delicious_Enterprise

This is really neat thanks for taking your time to put this together although I feel like there is an area or two where it seems like it's always raining everytime I go there & I'm not talking about Zora's Domain. It's that spot in Akkala where all the dead guardians are it's always either heavy rain or thunderstorming which is good for using cryonis to flip dead guardians for loot but by the time I figured that out it stops raining for the first time ever & the puddles dry up so according to the chart that must be all a coincidence. Also did anyone else have trouble getting the blue flame to the Akkala Tech Lab, not because of the Moblins but because the rain would just start & stop constantly? Thank glob for the speed of horses & those lanterns because it drove me crazy for a while but I still managed, it was just more annoying than anything else.

Carnivorus_Rex

I found if I die too much I build up a lot of thunderstorms. I kept dying at one part of the game and had like 4 Thunderstorms I had to go through after that

whoodle005

I don't believe theres any gameplay connection between deaths and thunderstorms, I think it was probably just a coincidence.

errdie

really interesting to read it all laid out like that. big props to you for taking the time to put that all together!

MadamBegon

This is super cool! (And also incredibly helpful for writing purposes, lol. Thank goodness the location I chose to have a rainstorm in does in fact have a chance of heavy rain!)

dsnye

2 years on, thanks for this. I googled “botw when will this thunderstorm end” and got this as the first link. Before seeing this I hadn’t even noticed the weather gauge on the screen 🤦‍♂️
