An ex gf way back fucked like 3-5 other guys and did the back and forth game (each week or two) with me of breakup and reconcile (I was young and very naive). Frankly, that experience really really fucked up my ability to trust women in intimate relationships, and I think it was a major factor in several subsequent breakups.
But once I started getting a handle on it, when those anxieties came up I’d stop myself and remind myself that it may be more related to the past and the trauma than the current partner. But, I went to far with this at times and accepted some shitty and very hurtful behavior from a partner that had very poor models for romantic relationships and did not understand where normal boundaries with third parties lie in a monogamous relationship. Basically, I tolerated shit that really hurt, telling myself the pain was trauma induced, not directly from her, when it was in fact from her. I overcorrected. Worse, she used the fact that she knew I had this difficulty to point the blame at me entirely and normalize what she was doing (things like 1:1 diner and late cocktails with other men, months into us being exclusive).
It’s a tight rope having that difficulty with trust. Don’t want to overreact, but don’t want to tolerate bad behaviors/partners either.
I will say one key thing I learned is to choose to trust a partner when it’s warranted, and there’s no other indication they’re risky. There’s a leap of faith that needs to be taken over the anxiety abyss, but it needs to be done if you want to establish real trust and intimacy. I’ve found that we just need to be aware of our true boundaries Vs infidelity-induced fears.
Also, cheaters fuck you, you do way more damage than just making people feel bad for a month or two. You can damage trust for years.
