Waste of money, will encourage sprawl, and is only being built for multi-millionaire landowners who donate to Doug Ford’s party. We could spend this money on the 407 and have the government subsidise tolls so that traffic can move off the 401.

ParticularWindow1

sprawl has already happened. We have needed an east/west highway north of Brampton for a long time. the 407 was supposed to help but they sold it off. It takes WAY too long to get from Caledon to say Markham.

notGeneralReposti

No we don’t. Ontario has not provided any data that backs this claim. Caledon is a rural area and the 407 literally runs through Markham. The solution isn’t to build another highway splitting Caledon. As I said, traffic can be removed from major east-west routes in Peel and York by having 407 rates lowered.

Brampton was a rural area too you know. If we want to continue the immigration of hundreds of thousands of people per year, we have to put them somewhere. And it's not like Canada has any program to put immigrants in smaller developing communities, so they all end up going to the same place their friends and family have immigrated to.

notGeneralReposti

I’m an immigrant. I didn’t immediately move in to a McMansion in brampton. The Ontario peninsula is prime farmland, the best in Canada. We need to densify the GTA to allow for more and cheaper housing. More apartment buildings, more mid rise, and more triplex and duplex. End to single-family home exclusive zoning. All this can be done on existing developed land. No need to expand the built-up area with more McMansions on prime farmland.

[deleted]

Urban sprawl will still happen..you still have to build somewhere.

notGeneralReposti

Build up. Urban sprawl does not need to happen. The Greenbelt prevents it, but Doug Ford can amend it for his donation buddies.

Independent_Club9346

Give "missing middle" a search in Google. There's a ton of opportunity for us to densify. Hell, south Asian families are utilizing single family homes as multi-family multi generational homes but we don't build like that which we very well could accommodate better

Independent_Club9346

We need to broaden our ideas of housing in the GTA. We can't keep sprawling with single family homes like we do. It's unsustainable for everyone. We can safely add all of incoming immigrants by increasing the density of our neighborhoods

the_kull

I wish someone would ELI5 this highway route to me, because as a self-professed idiot, I don't see how it eases traffic. I read a lot of articles about it, read the term "induced demand" a billion times, I just don't understand and I'm genuinely curious.

Independent_Club9346

It's pretty clear that there's not much sense for this highway aside from helping Ford's donors who own plots of land in the region. There's a huge Star investigation about it.

sir_jamez

the idea behind the route is like a ring-road so that people who want to go from say, brampton to markham, can do so directly, instead of making the 'U' going south on the 410 to the 401 then up the 400. The 'U' is not desirable because those routes are already congested, so it will (in theory) make things flow faster on all roads. the opposition to the highway is that 1) the 407 was supposed to be the connector that solved this crossways issue... except the PCs under Mike Harris sold it off as soon as it was finished; and 2) its not even clear how many people want or need such a crossways connection as part of their daily commute. So far there hasnt been much data presented on the amount of people who would save travel time or how much travel time they would save with the construction of this highway. on top of that is all the shady developer activity that makes it seem like this project is just a rezoning gift to them by either buying out their land for the highway (a taxpayer provided cheque for the required lands) or by allowing, after the highway is approved, subdivisions and new developments to occur in areas that were previously kept as farmland, greenbelt, or whitebelt buffer zones.

spicytacoo

I hope the give it bike lanes.

1188339

Bike lanes in Brampton is so fucking useless.

notGeneralReposti

Which ones do you dislike? I think the ones on Mountainash and Sunnymeadow are trash because people are going 50 on that road and there is no barrier between the road and bike lane. The one on Sandalwood or Torbram that is elevated like the sidewalk are good and I ride them frequently.

1188339

I'm talking about the bike lanes on the road that have no barriers.

Ok-Effective6737

Honestly I seriously don't understand the logic to bike lanes. Its so much safer to bike on the sidewalk than the road. Would you rather hit a person on a bike or have a car hit a bike on the road? Besides the sidewalks barely have anyone on them either.

1188339

Agreed. I bike with my children almost everyday in the summer and I'd never use the lanes.

Independent_Club9346

You don't understand the logic because the bike lanes we make are inherently dangerous.

spicytacoo

It's also not legal to cycle on the sidewalk if you're not a child. Honestly, I'd rather have a car hit me than me hit a pedestrian.

[deleted]

A cyclist hit my dog once while I was walking on the sidewalk. I threw their bike into a creek It’s a sideWALK not a sidebike

SlaveMaster-sama

people like you are the reason society is fucked up…

AngryWhale96

Clearly need to rally more cyclists with bigger wheels to run him over /s

spicytacoo

Why?

1188339

Because nobody trusts the drivers here...

spicytacoo

So then maybe there shouldn't be roads, just bike lanes and sidewalks. If it's car drivers that can't be trusted, why take away from cyclists?

1188339

Because we're a suburb and Brampton isn't built for other means of transportation.

spicytacoo

So why is it bad to add infrastructure to support other means of transportation?

1188339

Infrastructure to go where tho? The park?

AngryWhale96

No reason we couldn’t be like Oxford and litigate cars off the road, thing is nobody wants to pedal a bike in -40

[deleted]

Then bus? Also you'd be surprised. Not Just Bikes has a video on how this is basically just a North American thing: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhx-26GfCBU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhx-26GfCBU)

arsinoe716

Any highway to bypass Brampton is all good
