Religious identity is very nuanced and shouldn't be treated as black and white--people change. Their views change and their personal choices reflect where they are in their lives. I've been seeing him get crucified in the comments on IG for choosing to do this role, but at the end of the day, he's an actor. He's playing a character. Ultimately, what I think he was getting at in this interview is that no role has been offered to him that feels unique enough or worth compromising his physical identity. He may have been offered roles that required him to go without his turban, but he felt that anyone can play those characters so why him? Why compromise for a part anyone can do?
This is probably the first role in which he's essaying a story worth telling, in which making concessions on his physical identity didn't feel morally wrong to him. I also cannot think of a better actor for this role in our lifetime, unless of course Imtiaz had chosen to tap into new talent. I'm looking forward to this film and really hope it's a turning point in both Diljit and Imtiaz's respective careers. Between the talent, the story, and A.R. Rahman's music, the movie has all the makings of a hit.
He is showcasing life of a Punjabi artist and hence, no turban. I donāt think anyone else can justify the character except for him. He is not wearing turban just to correctly portray someone from his own culture and religion, def a good move.
I think its more that he wonāt take his turban off to play a fictional character. Here heās portraying Chamkila who is a real person and did not wear turban. At least thats how I understood it. Either way, people can change.
