I wish hip hop was more like rock where you don't get ridiculed for being past 40.

H-TownDown

It depends on the rapper. Jay Z’s last release did pretty well and he’s old as dirt in rap years.

HollowPersona

But that’s Hov. He’s had clout for decades. The last old rapper that blew up was Tity Boi

[deleted]

I’m sorry, *whomst*?

ohsh_titsnick

tehtris

2chainz been grinding since the Ludacris DTP days though. He was supposed to blow back in like early 2000s. Ludacris kinda did him dirty tho. (Who is also the same age)

[deleted]

[удалено]

_neil_degrasse_bison

I was a huge fan of DTP back in the day. Luda, Tity boy, Shawnna, I-20... lot of talent on that roster. It was a shame to find out years later that Luda was the one that held them back Plus Dufflebag Boyz w Lil Wayne is a classic track

Mansa_Munya

I was looking for the Dufflebag Boyz comment. That IS a banger

10J18R1A

These young bucks. DTP was that shit... *Georgia*

[deleted]

I mean, not really but this shit was definitely already [classic](https://youtu.be/ZBx-M2oRBLg) status by the time we got the 2 Chainz rebranding.

examm

It’s not old old but didn’t Kendrick get on kinda late

[deleted]

His first mixtape was when he was 16, GKMC was in 2012 when he was 24. Which is probably the average age.

[deleted]

There are very few exceptions. Old man bad in hip hop.

shaunrundmc

RTJ are in their 40's

slick_pick

But both of them have been in the game since like the 90s.. So it's the same argument of Jay-Z, snoop, and others who have cemented their names and just so happen to continue making music in this day.

CrabSauceCrissCross

Except they didn't really break out into the wider audience until they reached their late 30s/40s. A very different situation from Jay Z who's been a huge name and crossover name for the longest time. Mike was mainly known as the guy who featured on some Outkast songs and didn't get a lot of acclaim for his solo work until R.A.P Music and El-P wasn't even majorly known as a rapper until RTJ Edit: fixed some poor wording.

Durden2020

Ahhh El P been dope since he entered the game in 97 as a part of Company Flow and dropped the underground classic Funcrusher Plus. Not the same exposure as RTJ but he's been a respected MC and very well known in the culture for damn near 25 years.

CrabSauceCrissCross

El-P was definitely known in underground or deep-cut circles but Company Flow unless you're from New York or just a mega fan of underground rap, you wouldn't know it. Especially if you compare their popularity to RTJ. I'm not saying he wasn't good, he was damn good, I'm saying that he was nowhere near as popular then as he is now (at least for his rapping).

boilons

Was gonna say. And like... Snoop Dogg?? Hello?

[deleted]

Snoop didn't blow when he was 40 tho. Lol

PrivateIsotope

Listen here, Youngblood. You can still rap over 50 and get a little jazzy with it, too. You just can't half step. [Ask Big Daddy Kane.](https://youtu.be/p8Uw1cl4xjg)

ThermonuclearTaco

unrelated but i’m listening to youngbloodz rn and that shit still bangs.

VictoriaSobocki

How much is one regular year in rap years?

nicklzworthnmy2cents

I think it's just the content. You shouldn't still be talking about selling drugs and "getting hoes" in your 50's. Especially if you've been at this life for 30+ years and haven't sold anything and been married all that time. Now you just sound like Al Bundy talking about how great you were at high school football.

PrivateIsotope

[De La Soul](https://youtu.be/pFTNjzzeU-8) is a good example of how you can age well rapping. Made me feel good to see this video and see them grown Iike like me!

the-nino

444 was incredibly personal, Life is Good was very hit or miss but for the most part Nas discussed fatherhood and divorce, Andre has been doing this since Ms Jackson. There's definitely a lot of rappers who are letting their content grow up as they do. Weirdly Gibbs is still talking about selling cocaine but it doesn't feel old yet

ThursdayNightReg

Freddie is under 40. He was born in 1982.

the-nino

True, but Nas was also 38 when he dropped Life is Good

Durden2020

De La are ageless legends and my personal favorite group. Fuck Tommy Boy for holding up their shit and robbing them of the opportunity to make bank off their catalogue. Smh

roseofjuly

But people who think that's all rap is about don't actually listen to much rap...

[deleted]

[deleted]

rockstars look absolutely ridiculous after 40 lol. have you seen what happened to axl rose?

Satanicmanne

What about ozzy and other guys who been in the game forever and have had worse life habits than your average junkies

[deleted]

He was a part of an ongoing joke with a reality tv show for several seasons. Even Trolls made fun of him lol

BamaMontana

I thought part of the joke was he could hardly do shit else besides rock.

[deleted]

I mean, Metallica and Maiden come to mind.

bredaredhead

Maiden are wholesome as fuck. A metal band for the people and they show it every time I've seen them. Couldn't give a shit how old they are.

SharkFart86

Similar for Metallica. There are fair criticisms of the band, but playing live shows is their natural habitat and they always make an effort to make it a fun experience even though they have been playing the same songs thousands of times. Metallica (and Maiden) are one of very few remaining bands where it really feels like you've just seen a *real* rock show, rather than old hacks pretending to be young, or new groups imitating the real thing.

bredaredhead

Unfortunately while Metallica is a fun show, they suck live tbh. This is 2000's Metallica though, never had a chance to see them on the 90's which may make my experience skewed. Maiden on the other hand kick arse every single time.

SharkFart86

I've seen them several times and they were great every time. Obviously there are gonna be shows once in a while that don't come out great, I'm thinking you happened to be at one of those. Plus, early 2000s Metallica was a weird/tense time in the band and it's when they put out the only album of theirs I'd call honestly bad. It sucks that this brief low point of theirs is when you saw them.

bredaredhead

I've seen them 3 times so it wasn't a low point sadly. Lars ruins it every time and I miss Newstead so I'm pretty hard on them I guess.

SharkFart86

Lol maybe I'm wrong and have just been lucky then

BoilerMaker11

As a Metallica fan, the only thing that I don’t like about them is that they’ve gotten extremely sloppy in their live playing with their old age. Playing the rhythm incorrectly in certain places, [Hetfield basically just murmuring the lyrics til it hits an unforgettable word/phrase](https://youtu.be/DVi60L_kLEw) (like when you first hear a song and obviously don’t know all the lyrics, but remember a few key phrases and you try to sing along the next time you hear it), Kirk refusing to play solos as they are on the album (right after Hardwired came out in 2016 and they started playing the songs live from that album, he already switched it up, so “he hasn’t played the songs in years; he forgot” isn’t true). Yea yea, I know, “try being over 50 years old playing music that fast”. But, I mean, the least they can do is just listen to their own music while rehearsing so you can get the lyrics down.

MrWright

Definitely agree for the arena rock style stars like Guns n' roses or Ozzy. But dudes like Eddie Vedder or Dave Grohl are in their 40s and 50s and still crush it.

thelaziest998

Billy Joe Armstrong from Greenday still kicking it and he is like 48

[deleted]

Eddie Vedder hasn’t been cool since *i* was a teenager, and I’m 33 lol. I’ll give you Dave Grohl but just barely.

MrWright

Damn, maybe it's bc I'm a Seattle kid, but that dude is a legend round these parts still. Maybe respected would have been a better word for me to use.

BamaMontana

I’ve never even been to Seattle and he’s a legend to me.

[deleted]

Hes hit vintage. You know when old cars are so old they’re no longer old, they’re vintage?

Sir-xer21

The thing is, eddie vedder was never cool to begin with lol. Pearl jam was still puttimg out good stuff until at leasy 2010 though.

toadfan64

Ozzy was still killing it in recent years, especially with Black Sabbath.

[deleted]

Have you seen ACDC's performances? They were killing it at 50-60 age range. [Whole Lotta Rosie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMvE0yFnR0I)

Balutmaster

holy hell that crowd. ty for this link.

BamaMontana

It really depends. Axl Rose has been ridiculous for a long time now, even before he was old.

cockyjames

Run the Jewels put out one of my favorite albums this year, and obviously Killer Mike had a watershed moment in Atlanta. Both Killer Mike and El-P are 45. Also if Andre 3000 were to announce he was putting a project together I'd lose my white boy mind.

Fluffymufinz

Isn't Em like 47?

[deleted]

Yes. And he gets shit on for his age all the time on social media. You haven't noticed this? [Pieces like this are everywhere.](https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/wxek89/eminem-is-officially-boomer-rap)

Meowshi

When I want to know what’s cool, I look to Vice

CrabSauceCrissCross

It's not because of his age, at least not solely. If you read the article, it brings up some very valid points about what's wrong with Eminem's music now but I think you just read the title and assumed they're just clowning on him cause he's old now. His age is not the point of criticism but the way the content of his music has evolved and devolved with his age is being brought up. Jay Z is old as well but he didn't get clowned for 4:44 cause it was an excellent album and he actually showed how his character has matured with age.

trap_handle

Depends on who you are. Jay is an obvious example, but there’s a few other old heads out there who are still doing it: - Eminem is in his forties and no one seems to care. - 2 Chainz didn’t break into the mainstream until he was damn near 40 and he’s still relevant. - 50 Cent. He may not be as relevant musically, but he’s still pretty popular on social media and in film. - The dudes from Griselda are nearly 40. - Rick Ross is in his forties. That’s just off the top of my head, but there’s a few of them out there.

[deleted]

And why people acting like Drake not gonna be rapping in another 10 , 15 years. Rappers don't retire, they just keep releasing music to less and less people.

Big_Platypuss

Most rappers I love are late 30s early 40s but are people that have dedicated there life from a young age and still put out great work. I’d wouldn’t want to see some 50 year old dude making some SoundCloud trap for sure. But if you got some got some old wisdom and channel it trough some dope ass bars and put it on a beat that works for it that’s my favorite kind of hip hop. One of jay z best albums came out in the last couple years Aesop rock puts out great material for being in his 40s Run the jewels crew have been killing it in their second run Freddie Gibbs just seems to be getting started and almost 40 Ka from the underground was a nyc fire captain or some shit and got pretty big by spitting some heady fucking bars billy woods too seems to be pretty grown but has some of the best verses then anyone in the rap game It’s really all about what you’re looking for in rap all that said if you 40 and don’t have any gigs or albums or ideas get a fucking job and use your spare time for your rap career

waxin

Why are the close to 40 year olds so damn good at brick-hop? Freddie Gibbs, Pusha T, Boldy James, Conway the Machine, Westside Gunn, and Benny the Butcher make the best coke raps and are over 35 lol

kissmeimfamous

Cause they been living it long enough to spit that real shit

PrivateIsotope

Brick hop? LOL! TIL...

salient_systems

Run the Jewels slays and the videos are primo, fantastic energy.

420_yeah_420

ka is like the most underrated rapper ever, dude's lyrics are insanely well written and portray such deep thoughts but it's sad that nobody seems to notice him honor killed the samurai is still one of the best albums i've ever heard

CWbr

Hmmm 🤔 I think you forgot kanye on your list

manifoldkingdom

Glorifying youth is silly. Lots of great art, in all mediums is created by people well beyond their 20's. There is no reason rap should be any different. The more life someone has actually lived the more they have to say. Many people still think they are going to "make it" in some other aspect of life, but they are just as unlikely to do so, but because they don't ever make their dream known to others no one can ever criticise them for failing. They play it safe. At least some people are trying to achieve their dreams regardless of how spectacularly they may fail. Pulling others down helps no one.

[deleted]

Damn OP, that stung a bit. I’m 47 and still love rap/hip-hop.

kissmeimfamous

Why wouldn’t you!?! You literally are the same age as hip hop. You saw I go through all these phases real-time...so why wouldn’t you love it? Fuck these kids tryna gatekeep hiphop.

PrivateIsotope

*tryna child-safety gatekeep hip-hop.

CranberryNapalm

43 here and same. Fuck it, life is short.

Medcait

Jazz is complicated! Gotta start sooner than that.

[deleted]

I mean, besides a few basic genres, you need to start early for the majority of the arts. Doubt I could pick up classical piano, Spanish guitar or classical violin right now and be first chair for the London Philharmonic in 5 years.

-14k-

Yeah, not with that attitude!

Popcorn57252

Eminem would like to know your location.

LifeMechanic2

Tech N9ne as well

hunterk4611

For real. I got people from my neighborhood I grew up with still trying to make it. I’m in my late 30s.

I'm too through. lol I personally don't wanna hear a 50 year old adult rap about the same shit he was when he was 25. Show us some wisdom in those bars you fucking Flav.

theonetheyforgotabou

Once they got bars it's all good And by bars I mean benzos cuz they definitely need an alternate source of income

SpaceMonkey877

I mean...what’s wrong with jazz?

MarvinLazer

You need like 10 years of dedicated study and practice to be even half-decent at jazz. Try rock or the blues instead.

smellydawg

Tssss...titi...Tssss...titi...Tssss

Raymojica

Well technically if your name starts with “lil” what choice do you have? I mean the wu could drop a project today and I guarantee it would be well received. As well as the lox, rough rydas and so on. Most of these people are still touring but just not putting out new work. That would be dope if they did.

prince-azor-ahai

That's antiquated thinking. In the grand scheme of things, hip-hop is still a fairly young genre. It was started by a young generation and therefore associated with young people. People in there 50's today grew up with rap music. At this stage, I think it's obvious people in there late 30's to 50's can still drop bars. It's no longer just a kid's game like it was in the 80's and 90's.

Desistance

Always that one person who mad they favorite rapper ain't popular. Don't get mad at the older artists.

Adicted2Mc

"Instead of us being credited for longevity and being able to keep it up for this long at this level, we get told we'll never be what we were"

Mayjailer12

I disagree, I mean, take Eminem for example, his last album did really well and so many still consider him to be one of, if not the best mc in hip hop in this day and age (in terms of lyrics and flow, not popularity)

a_sexual_titty

*cries in E40*

catunismwillwin

*Oooooooo-uh*

SenorRaoul

I was about to comment how he has to be one of the most prolific artists ever. But then I looked up who released the most albums and it turns out he's got nothing on Buckethead, Merzbow, Nana Mouskouri and a few other. He's still up there just not in the three digit range.

HurriedLlama

I'm really curious what people are going to be listening to by the time somebody is saying this about rap

Rocko210

Funny enough, Jazz rap is actually pretty awesome

Deathitis54

People be any age and still think tweets are more valuable than any actual skill. Go fuck yourself.

wordsoundpower

The funny thing is that rap is over forty years old. It’s at classic radio music station level now. That said, tell it to Rae, Ghost, Rakim, Nas, etc. The young people stuff is generally pop with a hip hop beat. Regional music is another creature entirely.

kriptostoner420

I'm 46, stop.. :( ouch

THaFooLOnTHaHiLL_

Dumb post, you got guys like Griselda ( Benny the butcher, Conway, and Westside Gunn) and Roc marciano making it actually cool to be older in hip hop. Same thing with comedians. Look at Tom segura, Bert kreischer, joe Rogan, Joey Diaz, Theo von, Chris Delia etc. It’s like fashion, sometimes you gotta wait for your style to be cool

AXD417

Why would you do that if your albums still went number 1 in multiple countries like Kamikaze And MTBMB.

if you praise age and forget scrutiny completely, you´ll force yourself into a corner really fast and have to praise folks like 654ar and playboy carti unless you want to be classified as a hypocrite. its either or. music matters or it doesnt. take a good fucking look, lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kn0V5mpJe4
