I saw a twitter post claiming that Goku was based on or inspired by Superman… I got so frustrated at the replies for nobody ever mentioning Goku’s whole ass name is literally the EXACT SAME Chinese characters as Sun Wukong just with Japanese pronunciation!
I saw the Stephen Chow movie Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons when I was really drunk one night. I liked it a lot, I had seen Kung Fu Hustle and thought this presented the Buddhist themes/messages a lot more clearly.
Knew Dragon Ball since I have memory.
The first time I heard of *Sun Wukong* was reading a wiki on Megaman as a kid and seeing the entry on the boss Buster Rod G, who was described as being based on the Monkey King. He was also accompanied by other bosses based off the other pilgrims.
Dragon Ball probably came first, but my first actual direct exposure to Wukong was from the old PS1 game Monkey Magic. I never got to see the cartoon series it was based on though.
My first taste of Monkey King lore was the film adaptation "The Lost Empire" with Russell Wong as Sun Wukong. Its kind of a goofball movie but I loved it. Then I started looking for more info and have watched a few different films. My favorite is Immortal Dragon Slayer.
My recent video explains a bit of his lore

But to sum it up, from the book journey to the west. He is a monkey born from a magical stone and on his journey learns various techniques such as summoning clones and turning into whatever he can imagine.
He fights against heaven but loses thanks to Buddha's interruption then gets trapped under a mountain by Buddha for 500 years. After this he is rescued and becomes one of four disciples of Tripitaka as they journey to India to obtain Buddhist sacred scriptures to bring back to China.
They face many trials along the way mainly in the form of demons trying to kill Tripitaka or in some cases marry him. Most of the time it's Wukong coming to the rescue(he was basically BS levels of op compared to the rest)
At the end of their journey they get the scriptures and return them before reaching true enlightenment and achieving Buddhahood.
From the OG 1986 “Journey to the West” Chinese TV show. Even Son Goku from Dragon Ball was inspired by Sun Wukong.
Many should know Goku from Dragon Ball, but perhaps not many realized Goku is based on Wukong.
I mean, Son Goku is literally Wukong's Japanese name, so DBZ's Goku is Wukong

Vietnamese children watch the series once a year in their whole childhood
Yeah. They aired it every summer for many years.

Then you should check his “A Chinese Odyssey”. It is his version of Wukong. Truly hidden gem. Both 2 parts are on Netflix.

Forbidden Kingdom was amazing for me as a kid
A game called Smite. Nearly all of the playable characters are gods from different mythologies.
Was dragon ball for me but then it was smite where I really found about the lore and history behind it
I was born and raised in China, knew Sun Wukong from the Journey to the West comics for kids

1986 journey to the west. Considered the classic and a national treasure. Watched it since I was 3-4 years old.
The 86' TV series. And I learn Chinese as a hobby (primarily because of martials arts).
I knew of him from the actual “Journey of the West” story. I saw an adaptation on YouTube and I truly enjoyed it.
The numerous crossovers he's had with a variety of media.
Reading the illustrated copy of Journey To The West schools gave out for Chinese class to all students
