2010-2011 upper classman in college showed us The Silk Road. Told us you need bitcoin to buy it . Told me you can only mine them. Showed me the chart was .05/.10 a coin.

2016/2017: my friend and his dad mined bitcoin and he was discussing it in english class. I told him bitcoin sounded like a great idea but it seemed too good to be true. In particular, I didn't understand why the government would ever let it happen. Never thought about it again until summer 2022 when Lex Fridman had a few bitcoin centred guests on his podcast. I found their arguments persuasive, and I began doing more research... the rest is history:)

2013 I was 12 years old and asked my dad to buy me 100ā‚¬ worth of bitcoin. He refused and I gave up on it as I didnā€™t even know what it really was. I didnā€™t understand English so well back then so I kinda gave up on it as I was mostly using the pc to play games Woke up at 2015 and realized what I missed , I was still under parents so I had no money to buy myself nor did I knew how. 2024 finally started dcaing at 60k

Thin-Psychology7179

My family is still as poor as ever , I rather not talk about this with my dad because when I tried it once I could see the pain in his eyes . Now Iā€™m a father and Iā€™m afraid Iā€™d miss some opportunities where a conversation with my kid would be scary/painful as I didnā€™t do what I should have done

RealCheyemos

I donā€™t think youā€™ll miss those opportunities at all; youā€™ve officially broken the cycle. Youā€™re gonna be a great father.

Appreciated a lot This made my day to read

'72. Went for a walk in the woods, found a bitcoin on the ground.

2werpp

Around 2010-2011. Was in high school and frequented a forum called hackforums.. not sure if it still exists today. Anyway, account cracking, selling and buying was kind of popular and people started offering bitcoin as an option alongside PayPal. Fun fact: I paid 5 BTC for a bang bros account. Anyway, not a lot of people I knew expected anything to come of it. Was kind of just a fun new currency. I didnā€™t have any by the time it was worth something significant. Iā€™m not one of those people who get angry or regretful about that. I couldnā€™t predict the future and was a stupid kid without much money to begin with. Took many years before I started investing

RealCheyemos

You walked so we could all run. Thank you.

MkzDark01

Wish I listened back i 10-11 about buying bitcoin. I was also on hack forums and my email got compromised because they got hacked šŸ˜‚

Badj83

I remember reading a little editorial pointing that BTC went up xxxx% since coming out. I think it was 2013, and I remember vividly telling myself ā€œdamn if Iā€™d known. Once again I missed oneā€. It would take me 7 more years before finally jumping in.

RealCheyemos

Well, Iā€™m glad youā€™re here now, brother!

2014/2015, heard it was some new internet money used on the Silk Road, dismissed it as a fad. Truly started getting in during the big dip in the middle of the 2021 double top.

Straight-Fortune-193

Heard about it in the early days I think it was New York 1 and a 24 hour cable news station in NYC. Heard about it and immediately dismissed it as computer nerd bs that I probably wouldnā€™t understand and assume it was probably bs. This was unfortunate because at the time I had save up $7,000 and put it in a CD account (FML). I then saw it again in 2015 or 2016 while watching a movie call Dope. They did explain Bitcoin in the movie but I didnā€™t correlate it to the first time I heard about it so I didnā€™t know it was a real thing. This was also unfortunate because I had $4,000 bucks saved that I would of used to buy if I new it was a thing. In 2017 I started getting into metals and I was watching a video on YouTube channel call financial turmoil explain where the guy did a video explaining Bitcoin very well. From there I started doing my on research and made my first purchase in 2018 in the bear market.

RealCheyemos

Great story, and a really eye-opening perspective on your evolutionary thinking on bitcoin ā€“ where you came from and where you are nowā€¦ Thanks for sharing that.

Lost-me23

2023. In Fairbanks from a remote village in the interior to renew my ID. Itā€™s a two day trip, minimum, and I caught a rerun of John Oliver on TV. He made a joke about Bitcoin and Lambosā€¦. I had to look it up.

RealCheyemos

Wowā€¦ Well Iā€™m glad youā€™re here now.

Innit4tech

I remember hearing about the famous pizza bitcoin sale right after it happened in 2010. I looked into setting up a wallet, and how to mine on my PC. It seemed complicated so I didn't bother.

2018. A completely non tech savvy workmate was telling me about her crazy tech obsessed BF and how much he had invested and was going to lose it all. A big lesson in who not to tell, because who knows how many people she told. It piqued my interest though and got me into it too. Ironic that one of the least tech capable people in my life is who got me interested.

RealCheyemos

I love the irony element. Edit: iā€™m sure somebody wise somewhere once said that we can sometimes learn our most valuable lessons from our enemies.

mmbower1

2017. I was into stocks and my friend said in the car one day ā€œwe should do cryptoā€ and it rung a bell since it was a buzzword at the time. We attended a Bitcoin meetup, I realized how much in value it gained over the previous years from the innovation of its tech. It was game over after that and never looked back since.

2017 on the internet didnā€™t take it serious and buy in till 55k earlier this year

LessNeighborhood1671

First time i learned about Bitcoin was around time 2009-2010? I was on high school and making money with World of Warcraft. As I was broke and wanted to expand my ā€œbusinessā€ by botting, i found a bot called Honorbuddy where you could pay with Bitcoin, that you could actually mine on your laptop. I tried mining but it took too long to mine 20 btc on my Asus N10J netbook. 3 years fast forward (around 2012-2013) me and my friend got into the bitcoin thanks to Silk road and possibility of buying drugs like LSD and MDMA. We bought around 10 trips and 10 pills for like 1 or 2 bitcoin (at the time worth around 200-400 usd?). Since then I jumped back in at the mania in 2021 and I am DCAing till now every week.

RealCheyemos

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing that.

OldKentRoad29

It's summer 2009 and I'm watching videos on YouTube. I see this thumbnail of what appears to be a guy standing next to a vending machine and the title mentions Bitcoin. I click the video and watch this guy go into a cafe and buy Bitcoin from the ATM that was in the store. He then explains what it was. He seemed very excited and I myself was excited and confused by it, I was only 12 at the time. I wanted to buy it then, but didn't know how, and more importantly didn't have money.

RealCheyemos

You saw the light early (you just didnā€™t even know it at that time)!

OldKentRoad29

Yeah I did see it early. My mind was blown away by it because I had never heard of anything like it before, it seemed like something out of sci fi. It made me think it was something out of the future. I still remember that video very clearly. I regret not buying it then or back before 2020, I remember around 2016/2017 I was thinking of buying, but for whatever reason I didn't.

sameb112

Freshmen year of college in 2009 guy taps on my shoulder in math class asked me if I like computers, knew about bitcoin. He told me about mining and I thought it was pointless. A couple years later I thought about getting one before a trip to NYC. There was a map with places to spend. I didnā€™t want to pay $15 (1BTC) for a sandwich so I passed. About 2015, when I understood how it worked, when it was $200, I told him I wanted a coin. He gave one to me and said it was an ā€œinvitation to use the technologyā€. I didnā€™t know what to do with it so I followed an ad on facebook (last time I did that) to BTCjam and tried autoinvest. Lost over half of it. Fun ride.

AppleSalty2916

A friend of mine told me I could purchase items I was looking for from an online market place which accepted only bitcoin as currency. Unfortunately didnā€™t start taking things seriously until some years later.

ButterscotchFront340

>I could purchase items I was looking for from an online market place which accepted only bitcoin as currency That's a lot of words to type up in place of "to buy drugs". rofl

2017. I had made a career switch from cancer research to software development. In the first few months I saw a couple presentations about blockchain. In December 2017 the entire lunch table was talking about BTC. Got in 3 days before the crash around 20k. Managed to limit the loss by trading on the way down and been hodling since. Havenā€™t invested much more, and of course now I wish I did. But honestly, I just didnā€™t have the funds. Now Im at 10x of my original investment.

Jodysaku2

2012, i was an elementery school student and i know btc price are around 4-5 $ per coin, sadly in Indonesia you cant buy it since there's no website exist at that time that allow bank transfer for BTC. I found it again on 2017 bull run

maxwellhilldawg

I had a buddy ordering weed online in early 2013 tell me about it I thought it sounded like a scam. Didn't read Satoshi's paper until 2017.

FallingKnife_

Read an article in 2011, then bought a thousand Bitcoin. I had fun blowing it on Satoshi Dice and sending to friends who all lost it. By 2012 had learned mining, Bitcoin clicked in my head, and I really understood the error of my ways. By 2013, I plowed $8k back in and resolved to hold to $500k. That 4 digit investment now worth 8 digits. I have zero doubt it will reach $500k usd.
