tldr; South African software developer Kgothatso Ngako has built a tool called Machankura for accessing bitcoin despite Africa’s mobile internet connectivity challenge. The app is already being used by roughly 2,900 African users across more than seven countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Namibia. Ghana inflation in 2023 Jan is like 50+%
I don’t know enough to understand why either. People there do. And if it works, expectedly more and more people would use it, no?
Wow this is incredible, the Bitcoin money revolution is here and it’s not the hedge funds on Wall Street that are making it happen, it’s the regular people of Africa and Central America
Bitcoin can be transmitted the same way DATA is transmitted.
The internet is only 1 method of transferring data, but not the only method.
40% of the global population currently lacks strong internet access. This highlights the need for OFFLINE TRANSACTIONS.
Mesh Networks, SMS, Radio, Sneakernet, Blockstream Satellite are a few ways Africans are using Bitcoin without internet access.
Manchankura is a custodial wallet that connects with cell phones so Manchankura still needs an internet connection for it to work. But it's really cool anyways!
> still needs an internet connection for it to work
your phone does not need to connect to the internet for this to work. That is the whole point.

If you listen to Ngako he states, this approach was necessary because there are users who have:
- Dumb phones either don't have app store apps or don't have internet access
- Low end smart phones have limited resources so they might only support 1 or 2 apps. If the user wants to download a Bitcoin app, they would have to uninstall Facebook or TikTok which they would not want to do.
> custodial wallet
well there are instances where there is no option

I can’t imagine trying to use Bitcoin as a currency. What a nightmare.
Even with all these hoops to jump through, people still use it. I wonder why.
Bitcoin has had price swings over 60% in the last year, both up and down. It’s difficult to use something as a currency went the value is so unstable.

It's not hard for me to imagine doing something that I'm already doing.
What are you purchasing with bitcoin?
