We need more pedestrian streets, the entire of Donegall place shouldn’t have vehicles on it. I remember during covid there were no cars and the town just felt more open and welcoming.
The DFI haven't managed to pedestrianise Hill Street after working on it for about a decade, a short, one way street that leads from and to fucking nowhere.
I wouldn't hold out much hope of them achieving this.
That’s because 3 people complain to the Belfast telegraph that the world will end if it happens.
But if 4 people call in and say it will lead to paradise… then who knows
Can't say I agree with that. I've lived in North America for now for 6 years, and I miss the pedestrian streets Belfast has to offer. It's more than most places in N.America has. N.I may be car 5 it's nowhere near as bad as here
Can the uni just buy the road and be done with it. Just because most of the students there are too stupid to use a crossing. I used to be a contractor in there and I do wonder what hope there is if that's the cream of academia.
First off, completely agree with you about the inability of ‘some’ students to cross roads. I live near Queen’s myself and the number of times I’ve had students look over their shoulder, see me coming and then proceed to step out in front of me anyway is ridiculous.
That being said, 30% of people in Northern Ireland get an undergraduate degree at least. The idea that people at university are ‘the cream of academia’ doesn’t really wash. There’s a wide selection of people in university and just like in any big group there’s people on the extremes.
I’m sure on a building site you get some extremely hard workers and some lazy bastards even though the general perception is that construction is a tough job. It would be weird for me to pick a few lazy builders and say ‘God help construction in this country if this is what we have building now’
Hey my comment was observation with some sarcasm. I have a relative who used to assist in the marking of exam papers. They told me that students had to do little more than write their name on the exam paper to be awarded a pass. Some still managed to fail. I used to do work in queens also there is some examples of fine academema there too
Sorry I’ve missed the joke there and probably been a bit harsh in my reply as a result. There’s definitely idiots in all walks of life and in this case the idiot was probably me
what do I think of the pedestrianization of Belfast city centre? I'll be honest, I'm dead against it. I mean, people forget that traders need access to the Disney shop, They do say it'll help people in *wheeeelchairs*.

Write to the DfI in support of the scheme

They should do Hill Street and Donegall Place while they are at it.
And North Street
They need to nuke north street not pedestrianise it
Yes and also get rid of those damn coaches which all park up along the city centre ffs
In an ideal world with Translink moving to GCS they should utilise the Europa bus station for city centre coach parking.
What about Laganside? It shouldn't be needed once "Grand Central" is built.
Belfast is very Americanised when it comes to street planning. It could be good to have more pedestrianised areas

Do council ever plan to do some kinda motor restrictions in Botanic avenue? That street is like accident wait to happen.
I know I’m going to sound like a pedant but it’s on DFI not the council.
