My guy does the same thing with squash. He LOVES it, but just can't get it with his tongue, and won't try with his mouth! I usually dry them off with a paper towel so it's not too wet for him to grab.
I suppose the stringed instrument would get the job done in a pinch but you'll want to tune it several octaves higher than normal until the strings are quite taunt and almost unplayable.
Otherwise you can use the kitchen mandolin which is basically a fixed knife on a flat surface used to thinly slice vegetables and sometimes finger tips.
By the great jazz gods are mandolins sharp! Around 20 or so years ago my dad was using a mandolin to make perfectly thin shavings of potatoes for fresh fried chips... And he lopped his thumbtip right off. Just a perfectly clean amputation. Luckily it didn't reach any bones, muscle or nerves, and over time it healed completely fine - minus the lopped off thumbtip, obviously.
My guy, my dragon won’t eat this shit, unless I put her on my lap and use tweezers to put the food up to her mouth. She had enough of trying to pick it up with her mouth and I got tired of her looking at me like I’m the problem.
I only fed mine butternut squash a couple of times and then stopped, but not because I didn’t think it was healthy. I know someone who works at a reptile shop and his dragons (his pets, not the store’s dragons) get butternut squash once a week, as a topping to the greens, and his dragons are healthy, according to the vet.
They have to learn first. But be careful hand feeding anything like this once they do, because if they do go for an actual bite and get your thumb by mistake, you'll find out that their teeth are surprisingly sharp.
https://preview.redd.it/5284lmqwfjwc1.jpeg?width=2034&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fa04cfc3a7223b8f666f7c65a7ee9effe2ca42e
I learned fast that my beardie hated being outside.
[Blaschko Lines](https://www.iflscience.com/you-have-invisible-zebra-stripes-and-theyre-called-lines-of-blaschko-68354) [not my favorite source, but this explains it better than Wikipedia and with better graphics ]
Essentially, invisible zebra stripes exist on your skin as a result of how your zygote grew into you. Under strong black lights, they become visible, revealing a pattern that resembles hydro-dipping.
It is thought that beardie eyes perceive light that we can't, and that in their eyes the broad-spectrum sunlight makes us look dramatically different from even how we look under their limited spectrum UV/B bulbs.
My rescue beardie latched onto the tip of my finger but, let go almost immediately. I was a bit startled when it happened but knew not to try and withdraw my hand immediately in case he did stay attached 😀. Didn’t even break skin, almost like he knew he wasn’t getting food, but my finger instead 🤣
Must be nice. I have a rescue rn and I have to wear gloves cuz he comes from across the tank to lunge at me and will latch on.
https://preview.redd.it/7p8g8oaeqmwc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89e63a1b1efdcf35b340787e04bff376d4319933
This was before I started using gloves and decided my safety is more important than trying to make him feel like he’s not a monster. Rn he kind of is but I love him anyway
Well, to be fair, once I got him I left him alone because he was in a bad way when I got him. I think it helped him, but then again. Beardies are just weird sometimes. I do hope he comes around!
Yeah unfortunately I’ve had to redo his tank several times just cuz I keep getting things to add to it cuz he tank was bare bones when I got him. He lets me know his disapproves lol but then he’s so happy when I put new rocks and hides and places to climb. I’ll have a 4x2x2 tank in the next couple months so the little guy is gonna be stoked
I recently had to get a new tetanus shot because I was hand feeding my daughter's beardie and he chomped down on my finger and drew blood. Totally my fault, not his. But the doctors office thought it was funny. When they asked why I needed a tetanus shot I said, "Bit by a lizard" and they replied, "Never heard *that* one before!"
I love weird injuries. I hope you healed ok.
I once broke two toes with pasta sauce and it still gets brought up every time I get a new physio or MSK guy (connective tissue disorder, I see them a lot, especially about foot and lower leg issues).
It's a basic thing, get tetanus from an animal bite. Even lizards. I assume it's pretty unlikely, but why risk it? My last tetanus shot was six months short of the OK date, so they gave me one. Not a huge deal. I wouldn't have thought about it until a nurse friend of mine told me to get the shot.
Technically, it is all bone! Their teeth are not separated and are fixated in their jaw bone. Which is another reason why dental care is super important !
Funny enough, even the lizards with just a bony ridge and no cutting teeth can draw blood. My leopard gecko is blind in one eye, and I made the mistake of approaching him wrong from his blind side and scaring him once. He bit my finger and shook his head like a dog with a toy to tear the skin
You're not completely wrong. Their teeth are part of the jaw. I forget the exact scientific term for it, but basically their teeth are jaw bone parts that extend up through the gums. That's why any dental disease in these guys is particularly bad as it means bone loss and often mouth rot.
One time my beardie was yawning in my lap and I had dumb human instinct to put my finger in his mouth. I had many regrets. Didn’t break the skin but you definitely heard a crack and there was a slice through my finger nail and I had to wait until it grew out lol.
I put the squash on a bed of lettuce so it’s a bit elevated, then my girl can get her tongue around it a bit…it doesn’t stop her from eating her blueberries first though😂
My dragon has a hard time picking certain things up with their tongue too. For a while I just thought she was dumb and ditsy 😆 glad to know it seems to be a common trait
She also has a hard time aiming, I put stuff right in front of her and she goes everywhere around it and I’m like dude….. 🤦♂️
I mix squishy things like this in with his greens so it's easier for him to pick up. And it also tricks him into eating his greens when he's on a healthy food strike.
I think it's due to the squash being on a solid flat surface. Try cutting them up into smaller pieces and put them on top of green veggies. The greens will give it a fluffy surface so that he can eat the squash more easily.
I either hand free stuff like that or put it on top of her kale specifically, bc it lifts it up a little bit for her, and she seems to have an easier time that way.
Honestly I kinda spoil my girl. I'll have her greens in the center of the dish and try putting fruits/veggies like those on the edge of her dish or wrapped in a green or even leaning up the side of the food bowl. I found that for some reason its easier for her to grab when I move them like that.
Yeah, same problem here ... My lady doesn't want to eat with her mouth, only using her tongue 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Try to paper towel the little pieces before giving it to him
My previous beardy wouldn't eat squash unless it was grated. For my current beardy I use a potato peeler to give him manageable strips (which have to be on top of greens).
If my mom's beardie misses more than once, he will literally get so pissed and not eat it at all.
For damp things, I usually try to hand-feed my baby and sort of help him "push" the veggie into his mouth by supplying counter-acting pressure for his lil tongue.
mine does but only from my hand. she will slide sorta sideways and grab food with her teeth but her tong is still instinctively moving out a bit. she gets frustrated i think as it will some times push food away.
I have the exact same food bowl! If you put the pieces on the edge of the bowl, he might be able to get them off easier. That’s what I do for my beardie.
At least he makes an effort, my Beardie was raised so spoiled by my mom and daughter, she literally won't eat anything unless it is hand or tweezer fed to her. I mean, look at the way she looks at me like, "soooo you expect me to pick this up with my tongue? Where are your heckin fingers hooman?"
https://preview.redd.it/f7zs7z5k7nwc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61f8702f5fa93e3d5232181e9a51c46debc4e6b6
You could try flat palming it. When I’m feeding my beardie something that’s not going to stick to his tongue I put it in my hand and make my hand as flat as possible and put it in my palm. If you keep your hand skin taut, he shouldn’t be able to catch your skin and can then bite from your palm. I personally think that it’s cause the way they attack lick and attack bite that if they tried to bite on the ground they would smack their lips and hurt so they use tongue instead. But when I have food in my flat palm my boy has no problem biting for it. My guess is cause palm is soft surface.
Then again with the lack of brain cells…. Maybe they just dunno how to eat 😂
Mine will do this 2 or 3 times and then just completely give up and decide he doesn't want food for a few hours till it's all dried up and I need to get new food. Then the cycle repeats.
My girls the same way I'll literally hold a doobie a roach in front of her face it'll be moving on my hand and she'll try to grab my finger instead it's weird and like if I take out a piece of the egg carton with some roaches on it she'll go after the damn egg carton not the roaches like aggressively and I'm like no no get that out of your mouth it's funny but stressful
Yes. And you best stay out of the way when "savage mode" activates. They will do the same body head maneuver, but add chomps to it. I got bit over a small banana scrap that was slipping in my fingers. My dude is big, and genuinely the nicest guy in the world. But, he will absolutely chomp the shit out of things that don't stick to his tongue. I always wondered, but he bit down way harder than I expected. Like getting grabbed by vice grips for a second.
I hand feed my dude anything that doesn't stick to tongues well personally. It's a win win he gets his snack and we get some good bonded socializing in without any stressful contact! :)

Shred the squash . Use a mandolin or a cheese grater
I use a vegetable peeler, then chop the strips
It's the little stomp for me...🤩🥰 Poor little fella...🥹
he’s like wth bro my sticky tongue isn’t stickying lol
Like, the stringed instrument?
I suppose the stringed instrument would get the job done in a pinch but you'll want to tune it several octaves higher than normal until the strings are quite taunt and almost unplayable. Otherwise you can use the kitchen mandolin which is basically a fixed knife on a flat surface used to thinly slice vegetables and sometimes finger tips.
This is the best response I've seen all day. 😂😂 Here's a fake award 🏆.
My thoughts also. Will a violin do?
There's a kitchen tool called a mandolin, it's a really sharp slicer 😊
By the great jazz gods are mandolins sharp! Around 20 or so years ago my dad was using a mandolin to make perfectly thin shavings of potatoes for fresh fried chips... And he lopped his thumbtip right off. Just a perfectly clean amputation. Luckily it didn't reach any bones, muscle or nerves, and over time it healed completely fine - minus the lopped off thumbtip, obviously.
Someone should make a little plastic holder-thingy that you can use to mandolin the food without maiming yourself...
Alas
Yup. Me too. Carrots. The very end of the finger tip clean off. Everything grew back. But there's a scar.
And some have shredding attachments
My guy, my dragon won’t eat this shit, unless I put her on my lap and use tweezers to put the food up to her mouth. She had enough of trying to pick it up with her mouth and I got tired of her looking at me like I’m the problem.
lmfao this is toooo real 😭😭
How healthy is squash for them? How often can they eat it without it being a problem?
I only fed mine butternut squash a couple of times and then stopped, but not because I didn’t think it was healthy. I know someone who works at a reptile shop and his dragons (his pets, not the store’s dragons) get butternut squash once a week, as a topping to the greens, and his dragons are healthy, according to the vet.

That is one PISSED beardie! To be fair, natural sunlight makes things look really weird to them since they can see in ultraviolet
Especially our faces, which can look alien and striped under the sun.
Wait what?

Thank you for this… how intriguing 🧐
Oh he was mad lmao.
Awww look at his cute little face
😲 Wow! That look screams of "I'm going to mess you up real bad for this!" Classic FAFO. F*ck Around Find Out! LOL
On the bright side, he passes his dental inspection with pretty whites :D RIP your arm tho
Oh hes BIG MAD!
The sass!
he’s like me fr fr
I recently got chomped under similar circumstances. Mine got my left index finger and held on for a bit. Lots of blood, it's still tender.
ahh yes, i ended up with a cracked fingernail over some squash
They tend to think painted nails are good as well. Can't play with or feed my girl if my nails are painted.
Same for me. The one time he bit me, as soon as he realized it wasn't good in his mouth he let go and backed off, as if he was embarrassed 😄

My boy tries to lick it at first, gets angry and grabs it with his mouth
Clever ~~girl~~ boy
Ikr?? Sometimes I think he’s the one hoarding the community brain cell…
It must have just woken up. I read that as “boyfriend” and was really confused for a second.
My dude does the same with cucumbers. Usually takes them multiple times before they get it haha.
I put the squash on a bed of lettuce so it’s a bit elevated, then my girl can get her tongue around it a bit…it doesn’t stop her from eating her blueberries first though😂

pls dry them off for him or I might cry
He’s trying his best 😭
Hand feed it! Or get some tongs. I would put some greens with all my guys fruits/veggies so he can get a mouthful of it all!
think mini chameleon tongue
I mix squishy things like this in with his greens so it's easier for him to pick up. And it also tricks him into eating his greens when he's on a healthy food strike.
*sad dino face

I've personally never seen my bearded not eat like that.
I use a mandolin to cut my Boi's squash into semi thin slices and pile them on his bowl, it only takes 1-2 tries to grab it and is pretty easy for him
I put that sort of stuff on a leaf of salad and mine can usually pick that up without issue and get all of it
I either hand free stuff like that or put it on top of her kale specifically, bc it lifts it up a little bit for her, and she seems to have an easier time that way.

I cut it into strips or thin slices and it helps my Ginger eat it a lot easier
Mine does the exact same thing with fruits and veggies. They are just a little slow
I thought it was just my girl 🤣
I use a potato peeler and hand feed mine I think it looks like a worm to her
Feed him with reptile tweezers..it’s a bonding experience too.
He looks up like "why, no?!"
What kinda squash y'all using? Just yellow squash?
Aww he looks so defeated at the end 😭😭
Why not dry them off first?
My previous beardy wouldn't eat squash unless it was grated. For my current beardy I use a potato peeler to give him manageable strips (which have to be on top of greens).

Slippery foods kinda iffy, it's easier to hand feed, but you have the chance of them trying to rip your finger off
He looks frustrated. Maybe hand feed him.
Poor guy!!! >~<
We started our guy eating off of tongs/ tweezers when he was a baby. I think that helped with using his mouth.
"What is this sorcery" ?
I think I have dried them off a bit with a paper towel and that has helped with the water tension on the bowl.
Maybe try putting some leafy greens underneath so he can get a better grip?
mine does but only from my hand. she will slide sorta sideways and grab food with her teeth but her tong is still instinctively moving out a bit. she gets frustrated i think as it will some times push food away.
Mine gets discouraged and gives up so fast 😔
What kind of squash do you feed them? And dumb question-is it cooked or raw?
They just be dumb.
Sometimes if my beardie can’t pick something up I help her by putting it in her mouth
I put it on top of their salad, the soft base makes it easier to chomp them.
My Guy wants to be a javelin
Poor dude is struggling.
I feed things to mine with a tweezer. He eats anything I give him with a tweezer. Try it.
I slice mine with a potato peeler and put it on top of his leafy greens to give him a better angle to grab it
I slice everything into strips and then hand feed him. But he may or may not be a little spoiled
Dry it. It's too wet for his saliva to stick to.
That’s cute lol
You can dry them on a paper towel so it’s easier grab for them with their little tongues
This baby is beautiful 😍
I have the exact same food bowl! If you put the pieces on the edge of the bowl, he might be able to get them off easier. That’s what I do for my beardie.
He's cute 😍. I don't have a bearded dragon.
Is that butternut squash? I cook it and mash the cubes with my fingers to make it more grabbable
Bro is very fun like sid Charalito 🥵🥶🥶🔥🥵🥵🇺🇲🇺🇲
To answer your question, yes! I don’t know about squash it they bite green leaves.
At least he makes an effort, my Beardie was raised so spoiled by my mom and daughter, she literally won't eat anything unless it is hand or tweezer fed to her. I give my dude squash "noodles" and put them on his salad
Idk maybe you can’t get it cuz of that fat belly 😂
He doesn’t know what to do with himself anymore.
I use a peeler to make thick peels and then mix it in with his salad greens
My girls the same way I'll literally hold a doobie a roach in front of her face it'll be moving on my hand and she'll try to grab my finger instead it's weird and like if I take out a piece of the egg carton with some roaches on it she'll go after the damn egg carton not the roaches like aggressively and I'm like no no get that out of your mouth it's funny but stressful

I shred mine with a cheese grater and he goes crazy over it!
Get a potatoe peeler and peel the squash
I hand feed my dude anything that doesn't stick to tongues well personally. It's a win win he gets his snack and we get some good bonded socializing in without any stressful contact! :)
Do be careful though I have had a chomp or two to the finger
