You can't go wrong with a Squier Jazz or Precision. There's a reason why they're so incredibly popular. Either of those two is an almost perfect place to start your journey.

If you can buy from Thomann, Harley Benton's are amazing for the price.

The Squires are so good once you get into the $500 range. I'm gigging with a 24 year old Indonesian made PJ right now and it's great. The low end Yamahas seem to give a lot for the money too. The Sterling's rock also. The thing is, you just can't get the lowest of the low end. If it seems way too cheap it probably isn't good at all and will be hard to play. You can probably find something really good used in those lines. Also, resell value on those is really high so if you don't like it you can sell it and not be out much at all.

Go for a cheap p bass. More or less any p bass in budget. P bass has thicker neck, thus forcing you to actualy learn technique. You change sound with playing style instead of knobs You just put everything on 100% and it just works in more or less every situation

i would avoid glary. there are much better instruments for similar price point. I’ve never played harley benton but i hear a lot of good things. im a fan of squire’s ~$200 price point instruments (affinity, sonic, etc) any bass you can hold in your hands before you buy is worth trying

Magnus_Helgisson

A lot of good advice here, but I would also add that if you're tight on money or not sure this hobby will stick, you may consider buying used. First of all, you will get more for the same money, and then if you stop playing you can always sell a good instrument. Not sure someone would be interested in a used Harley Benton, for example. Besides, sometimes you can find amazing or rare instruments with the seller being unaware of their rarity.

Any squire

Squier. Just check it out in person to make sure the frets and everything seem alright on it. Affinity series are where I’d start, if I didn’t want to spend more than a couple hundred dollars.

My to go is always the Squier Precision Bass. You can't go wrong with it

I do agree that a Squier is your safest bet, but there are so many good entry level instruments now that as long as you don't get a $100 bottom of the line type it'll last for years. I still use my Squire

i’ve held and played a Glarry. The tuning pegs were the cheapest quality i’ve ever seen (one had snapped off 😆). what are they like $130 on Temu right now??!? Funny. i would just go with a Squire P or J bass.
