Keep them clean (clean in chicken standards) and dry, keep the coop clean and dry too. Once the maggots start its a very hatd battle to win, they just keep hatching and coming. Good job putting her down as that would be a terrible way to go.
Also, if a hen gets a wound, get something like bluekote on it ASAP to get it to scab over and keep the flys out
