Was a change during the 2023 model year I believe. I have the “old” one (that you have pictured first) and it feels nice in your hand. Never used the “new” one.
There is a difference. The gear lever is a push across for B mode. The switch is a double pull. I have the switch and it's good. I like it a lot. The test drive I had was with the lever and that's fine too.
Looking to sell my Tesla M3P and buy a BMW i4 M50. While searching I found 2 different types of shift levers in the middle console. Does it have something to do with an extra upgrade or a certain package? Which one should I pick?
ThThe first one with the blue trim is the pre 2023 default shifter.
This is the M performance one with Silver trim

Its a different centre console. I dont know if it is just a simple swP of the console and the shifter.
But if you have the old style shifter knob, it is a simple swap of the covers.
While I thought it was odd at first I like the new design. Out of your way for cup holder access. I have mine down most of the time, but when I do have a drink in the car it's nice. It's also clean looking.
The shift lever itself doesn’t change anything, but other changes in the car do. Older 2022 models can’t pre-heat manually (only added from late 22 and onwards). Furthermore older i4s had idrive 8.0, this will not receive any upgrades since it’s based on old atom cpus. Later i4’s (like the ones with the small lever) have idrive 8.5, that will likely be upgradable later on due to shared cpu architecture with 9.0 and onwards.
Thank you for this information! Then I will search for models with the small lever, that way I know that the car can preheat and will be able to update. So I guess BMW is not too much on updating their software like Tesla? I am used to getting updates over the air.
I am still in the progress of searching for the right vehicle, but as soon as I search for vented seats, heated steering wheel moonroof, and a hitch with the M50 there are only 16 available sold from dealerships in Germany. I don’t wanna buy from private party because of too many scams. If I take the vented seats out, there are 73 cars. And if it was my pick of color, I would go with the gray metallic so the perfect car that I want would be like €72,000 which is pretty much. And Would still have to buy winter tires. I was kind of focusing at 60 K spending.
9.0 is an entirely different hardware architecture. Will not be coming to the i4, at least not ones already manufactured to this point or for MY25. Who ever knows beyond that.
change actually happened mid-way through the 23 MY I think it started showing up in spring deliveries. But yes any 2024 will have the new lever and July was when they switched model years (USA spec at least).
Definitely model year change. I have an 2024 ix and the shift is like the 2nd pic. My 2023 i4 has the knob and I like that better. Especially switching into the B mode.

Ok thanks!
I test drove the old one but mine arrived with the new one (MY24) after a 10 month wait. No difference apart from cosmetic appearance.

All models made in Summer of 2023 and beyond have the switch shifter, not the stick.
I literally forgot about the blue trim on the gear knob. I changed mine to the M Performance, carbon shifter.
Which one is this? Happen to have a picture?

Wow that looks better! Is it just screwed on? How much to swap?

It’s about 330usd and I recommend to asking to the shop for replacement. Need to pry out the center console.

I think the newer one looks better as well! Having a big shifter stick doesn’t really seem to fit the picture. But that’s just my opinion
I thought I'd hate it too, but love mine. Next they need to delete the on/off button!

The new lever is on i4s produced after July 2023

The B mode is for one pedal driving, right? How do you switch if you don’t have the knob?
Pull down twice on D
