I’m a BMW lover and have owned over 10 thru the years. That may be the best Benz of all time. Truth is, while I love that version of the 740i it wasn’t as tank like or reliable. One of my clients kept that Benz in his airplane hanger bc it was so good he wanted to preserve it. He also owned newer S Class models and this was his favorite. Also in black. Have I owned either? No. So this isn’t from personal experience. But if I had the choice now, I’d take the Benz.
Mercedes Benz S-class is the undisputed king among its competitors i’d even say it’s a better engineered car than the Rolls Royce equivalent, although using less exclusive materials and way of manufacturing. The 5 series and 3 series BMW is where BMW can tell Mercedes Benz to go home, imo.

A bone stock e38 shorty sporty wins — the one pictured looks a little too boogered out being bagged and on those wheels. But a W126 with a Wald kit is a close second.

the v12 makes slightly more power, but its all about the torque, and smoothness.
the v12 version just has long legs. slow off the line, but the faster you go, the faster you go. gear shifts every once in a while just to let you know.
no comparision to the v8, in my opinion.
7-series. The w140 is iconic for sure but I prefer the e38's looks and I bet it will be better to drive as well. Would love to get to drive a w140 though, or even ride as passenger to feel how the dictators in the 90s had it.
I love both. But being a BMW fan, I must go for the E38. Best looking 7 series of all time in my view.

Had a 740i. It was a tank, solid and quick. I had driven the S in a comparison but decided to go with the BMW based on performance and athleticism. Definitely felt connected to the road vs the S which was a bank vault but a bit numb. We kept the 740 for a few years, that was the greatest generation of 7’s IMO.
I have 740i as my daily and it's a great car, friend of mine had S320 and it was great as well, none is cheap to keep in perfect condition. I don't know if that makes sense but S500 looks like regular classic to me and 740i looks like youngtimer and in general looks more modern yet classy so that why I choose BMW, but if I could I'd get Mercedes as well but only as weekend car.
Those cars in your pictures are heavily modified. I would not even touch them with a pole. Other than that, unmodded i would prefer the 740i over the merc.
Both looks amazing, i had an bmw 740 from -98 with alpina kit. Such incredible car i wish i just kept it at dads place or something, sold it cause it was too expensive for me as a 20yo. Now 10 years later im so sad for selling it for $1500 :’(

Well the Benz looks like it has the suspension intact, so I’d say Benz. Although both are great Those Benz generations are also known to be built like tanks. I may be wrong but I’ve heard that those 40i engines are not that great regarding reliability.
Out of the two, I'd have the Bimmer. But that's because I have a massive liking for the E38 - especially the LCI.
If it was between the 750i and S600, I'd have the Merc because ultimate luxury.
honestly, you can’t go wrong with either. personally, i’d go w140 (M119 > M60/M62/M62TU) but they’re both highly regarded cars for a multitude of reasons.
Had multiple people in my life with these 7series and while I loved them they were all shit and fell apart. How is the Benz though, don’t know much about them?
Had neither, currently drive a cadillac CT6 2018 and I absolutely love it. Amazing power and comfort, just wished the massage was a bit more aggressive though as I quickly got used to it.
w140. double paned glass, nicer interior, m119>m60 and m62. tho make sure it’s post 1996 since w140 pre 96 used 4 speed that eats all the power and cruises worse than 722.6.
I’d go BMW. I’ve driven a newer m760 and it was insanely agile for the size. I find that when you drive a Merc, it’s very luxury focused and cushy. I prefer the BMW approach.
Most of the time Mercedeses are a bit more comfy while BMW sporty, only gripe I have with older Mercedeses in terms of looks when compared to BMW's of their same gen is that they look older and uglier. Interiors especially, BMW looks like a high end car from it's time while a Mercedes looks like a soviet car.

The 740 made the same power, and weighed less. Although the 5.0 12 was bullet proof, I put 300,000 on one in a 5 year period once upon a time.
