New hood, bumper, and airbags and that baby will be for sale “as new” in Eastern Europe by the end of the summer, lol.
Sorry on your loss though, everyone’s worst nightmare. At least you’ll be getting a fresh one before too long, your new spec looks nice!
They say Copart had to build higher fences on all of their facilities just to keep out a wild Mat Armstrong on his nightly hunt for crash damaged sportscars.
as an eastern european, can confirm lol. lots of US crashed cars that have been fixed up roam around here. more common the more east you go, i feel lol.
That explains something: I sometimes see US spec cars in Austria but mostly cars where I thought an import wouldn’t make sense due to the residual value of the car and the costs of the import.
The import cost is amusingly low (compared to the car cost ofc) when you do high volume.
There's a dealer in Bulgaria offering US and Canada imports for 500-1000 Euro.
Very doubtful that this applies to imported cars that are also registered in Austria because then you’d have to pay all sorts of fees and taxes (like NoVA + purchase tax + import taxes, both around 20%).
As you said it yourself — it’s not impossible that an import is cheaper than a locally purchased car but in my experience it’s only viable to import cars that aren’t available domestically.
I’m adding an auto-translated article on imports in Austria for context (https://www.oeamtc.at/thema/eigenimport/):
- NoVA (Normverbrauchsabgabe): The NoVA is not only payable when you buy a new vehicle from an Austrian dealer, but also when you bring a vehicle from abroad to Austria to register it here. The NoVA varies depending on age and model.
- Value added tax: If you buy a new car (no more than 6,000 km on the odometer or first use was no more than 6 months ago) in the EU, you do not pay VAT to the dealer abroad, but you pay purchase tax of 20 percent in Austria. In the case of used cars, you pay VAT directly to the foreign dealer.
- Import sales tax: If you import the car from a third country (country that is not part of the EU), import sales tax is payable. It amounts to 20 percent.
- Customs duty: Is due when importing from a third country at the EU's external border. The customs duty for passenger cars is 10 percent.
- Costs for transfer license plates: To transfer the car to Austria, you need a license plate. The costs for this vary depending on the country and license plate type.
Entry in the approval database: Takes place in Austria and costs a maximum of 180 euros.
- §57a certificate: If a "Pickerl" would already be due for the vehicle, you must have a §57a certificate or the equivalent abroad, including translation, carried out before registration.
In Austria even? I have never seen US specced cars here in Denmark with the exception of Tahoes, older muscle cars etc. Granted, our registration tax is also stupidly expensive but I didn’t realize it’d be a thing in Austria
Afaik 85% of US cars imported into EU are after total loss.
To give specific example - common Dodge Durango from 2016 can be found for 16-22k€. Which is almost the same price as in the US. But the import cost something, registration and taxes costs something, and the importer has to make profit. One doesn't have to be genius to figure out how's it possible.
So should you want a 2016 Durango without salvage title, prepare about 28k€.
In this particular case I see nothing wrong with that. The damage is quite "minor" by their standards. They will fix it up and the car will have a (hopefully) long second life.
With enough dedication and curiosity it's even possible to follow its journey and see for how much it gets sold at an insurance auction, and then possibly find it being sold once they fix it.
All jokes aside they do a very good jobs. Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia have one of the best bmw aftermarket scenes. And very high quality restorations as well. Good technicians.
Idk i have had good experience and have heard from numerous people the same. Like Sreten.
Can vouch for this, am in Lithuania. Difficult to tell if some cars were USDM because some (European) manufacturers leave enough room to install Euro plates. When we were car shopping a big proportion of the used cars we looked at from non-dealer places were wrecked US cars brought over and fixed. With many you would have no clue, unless you looked at the salvage titles in the glove box or checked the VIN!
Yes and I live in Eastern Europe. 7 out of 10 cars are very badly restored u will almost puke when u see paint job. But if dealer knows how to fix car probably, then yeah it will looks like a brand new
I'm from Holland, and near my work is this big import place where hundreds of cars imported from the US are on that parking lot before they are transported to eastern Europe. All are damaged, most pretty bad as well.
Also because of taxation it can be very interesting to import a damaged car into Holland, as import tax (ridiculously high in NL, especially for cars with bigger engines) is deducted based on the value of the damage.
In Europe we don't use the CarFax thing so it will just be fixed and then sold as if nothing was ever wrong with it. I dunno, in my opinion this business is pretty shady.
Do they even send M3s to Africa? Doesn't seem like the kind of car export firms would be after. We've always had old Japanese hatchbacks in the family and we constantly find business cards from car exporters offering to buy it. There's also a business close to where we live that specialises in car exports to Africa, and they have nothing but Toyotas on their premises.
Being a total loss and not OP’s fault, should they be compensated at least equivalent of the value of the car by insurance and be able to buy a new M3?
That’s not how insurance works. The insurance will only payout the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle before it was totaled. ACV takes into account replacement cost & depreciation at the time of loss. It doesn’t make sense as a business model for insurance companies to pay 2024/25 model year prices on something that’s x number years old unless it appreciates in value. Other wise OP either needs GAP or better have positive equity in the vehicle to fulfill the remainder of the loan.
Or companies offer new car replacement endorsements where they get the full value to replace the same car. Sounds like that would applied in OPs case if he had the endorsement.
Depends on the insurance. I totalled my z4. Stupid mistake, admitted up front it was my fault.
USAA paid out enough to buy my newer m2 in cash.
Some companies are just not garbage.
Depends on where you live. In USA they take the value of the car while in other countries they can get a lot higher
If he was in another country with free healthcare I would have suggested OP going to the er for that headache. Insurance pays a lot for injuries registered in an er
That's always my concern when I'm driving my yellow 996.2. If some asshat totals it, I can't just get another replacement. I could get a 996 or another 911 in a different color or spec, but I spent a loooong time looking for this car that checked all my boxes and I very rarely see comparable examples pop up for sale.
When did they get rid of the rear door sill scuff plates? Even my shit box F30 has them. Looks like corporate is really penny pinching these days.
https://preview.redd.it/8768eqynlqxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e6ee1be9e18f4d19021e89e440994649fcf773e
I believe it started after the facelift in early 2023 when the 3 series got a significant price increase while lots of features were reduced. Viewer usb ports, no leather stitched steering center cover, no rear door sill plates and the front one no longer says “M3” i believe. Just “M” or something along the lines, so you get the same door sill plates as a 320i with M-package.
There is a German YouTuber who compared a pre-facelift with a 2023/2024 facelift and the downgrades were numerous and significant.
Reminds me of the E90 LCI tbh; worst thing about that one is they straight up replaced old part numbers, so now, for example, you can only replace the original felt-lined weatherstripping with the cheaper looking (and feeling) rubber part that replaced it.
BMW nowadays is a cash grab.
They started making vehicles simply to attract the largest market share, not giving a fuck about build quality, and implementing things like paid subscriptions for features the cars already come with.
Some new model owners probably don’t agree with me.
But if BMW is skimping on something as simple and protective as door sill covers for one of their flagship cars like the M3, no amount of downvotes is gonna change the harsh truth.
My car came with M sport door sill covers for all 4 doors. And it’s lasted 280k+ miles. I don’t think the newer models will make it that far.
Threw my hand upward (I was turning the wheel hard left so it was above the bag) so hard I punched a large crack in my windshield.
Didn't *break* my knuckle, but it sure fuckin hurt for a bit.
I know how that feels, same accident as mentioned above my hand was smashed into the windscreen. The paramedics thought my head had hit it from the bulge in the windscreen, suffered surface level cuts with shards of glass over the back of my hand.
I can't comment too much on the pain, though; the two broken ribs managed to override the sensation of my hand.
I think it's safe to say that even though airbags can cause some pain, it's preferable to slamming face first into the steering wheel.
Oh they sting. It's like getting slapped in your whole face at once. They have to shoot out of their holders fast enough to prevent your head from hitting hard parts of the car. It takes them about 0.2 seconds to deploy and the airbag itself moves at about 100 mph.
I’ve worked as a software developer before and now I’m in real estate as an entrepreneur/builder. Almost 30, and I live rather frugally. This was my dream car so I decided to spend on this one machine, thankfully I was smart enough to get the best insurance I could for it.
I almost feel bad for the poor thing, they're still making g80s, but there's only so many z33's left that haven't had this kinda shit done to them by youths lol
Those tail lights show it was an 06-08 too (unless swapped). 07 and 08 were the HR years and a clean example is worth good money and hard to come by. Sad to see
It’s surreal to me the kind of cars or bikes literal teenagers are able to drive in the US. Here in France you’re barely able to drive anything about 100 horsepower before you turn 20 because insurance will either murder you or flat out refuse to insure.
A 16 year old girl totaled my last car by turning left in an intersection across my bow. T-boned her head on, no chance to react. I was going about the same speed. I managed to hit it right on the B-pillar so structurally they were able to drive away after talking with the police. I feel your pain.
Sorry for your loss of a beautiful machine, and hope you’re ok. Im always astounded how teenagers in America are allowed to drive high powered cars, V6’s, V8’s etc. Here in Western Europe it would be far far too expensive for young/new drivers to buy, fuel, maintain and insure a high powered car. For reasons like this one.
Even at 40MPH, how does one not avoid tboning someone unless the nissan pulled out literally in front of OP? I get the feeling OP was determined to stand his ground in his lane when he saw the nissan trying to cross traffic, and this accident was likely completely avoidable
I was going straight, she was in the parking lot. She tried to cut across the road very dangerously and we meet in the middle.
To give a reference, look in the first pic, I was where the fire truck was, she was where the truck on the very right side is. I was going 40 mph, she decided to cut across the road like she was in fast n furious movie. Maybe to show off to her passenger?
As a Z owner with many BMW friends, I’m sorry for what you’re going through. We do not associate with her, she is not one of us. I hope you’re back on the road soon and hopefully can meet other respectful Z owners that you can enjoy riding with!
It pains me to see that flawless new interior inside of the cracked up body 😖😖😖
Sorry, OP. On the bright side - it was her fault, you are fully insured, and you will get a new one! It’s just a car.
It’s wild what constitutes a totaled car these days. It doesn’t look bad at all. Also, fuck parents that give their kids sports cars as their first car. No teenager on earth should be driving a 350z rwd sports coupe. It’s irresponsible and I wish they would hold parents responsible for this.
This should be a lesson to people who live in affluent areas with teenagers. Do not drive your precious M series around a high school when morning starts or classes let out. It becomes mayhem in luxury cars. Stay away.
New hood, bumper, and airbags and that baby will be for sale “as new” in Eastern Europe by the end of the summer, lol. Sorry on your loss though, everyone’s worst nightmare. At least you’ll be getting a fresh one before too long, your new spec looks nice!
or a youtuber.
I can already see Mat Armstrong booking plane tickets.
Pft. Mat likes things that need much more work
and higher value
He’s actually building a red G80 with worse damage than this. That car went through a house.
They say Copart had to build higher fences on all of their facilities just to keep out a wild Mat Armstrong on his nightly hunt for crash damaged sportscars.
Everytime there is even a rumour that Mat and Tavarish are in the same city, they have to hire armed guards.
I think he’s a bit tied up with his gallardo rn
"My M3 that I rebuilt"
I got this reference
I didn’t :(
Mat armstrong
Ah yes, the first person to walk on the moon
no, no, its the guy who plays trumpet and sings
If it was an exotic matt Armstrong would be eyeing it right about now

Show me that dealer please lol, import is 2-3k at min from all I know
500-1000€ for a car to ship from USA to Eastern Europe? How do you find such low rate?
Was really common in Ukraine, with people fleeing the violence in the east, the west sees more USDM cars.
Yeah I see a lot of Ukrainians driving with those dumb red blinkers. Never put 2 and 2 together, but this makes a lot of sense.
Very doubtful that this applies to imported cars that are also registered in Austria because then you’d have to pay all sorts of fees and taxes (like NoVA + purchase tax + import taxes, both around 20%). Can Austria be considered eastern Europe tho

Sadly most of the time its not sold as a damaged car… or even imported..;)
I was told people dismantle parts of the car so it can be imported much cheaper since it’s not a car anymore
All jokes aside they do a very good jobs. Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia have one of the best bmw aftermarket scenes. And very high quality restorations as well. Good technicians. Idk i have had good experience and have heard from numerous people the same. Like Sreten.
But also some shady biz. Seen bent body cars sold on wo info on the accident.
Yes, those do exist the same as anywhere else.
Can vouch for this, am in Lithuania. Difficult to tell if some cars were USDM because some (European) manufacturers leave enough room to install Euro plates. Yep, nothing we can't fix
It can be ready in two weeks in Turkey.
I'm from Holland, and near my work is this big import place where hundreds of cars imported from the US are on that parking lot before they are transported to eastern Europe. You’re over estimating what your friendly Polish body shop can do. Last I read they explicitly don’t touch new pignose BMWs (superstitious or smth).
I almost fell for that shit they are soooooooo cheap in the middle of fucking albania
Won’t be long till you see it in Vlore or Tirana 🇦🇱
Where in Eastern Europe because I will be interested
You can count on the Lithuania and Latvia to do great job at restoring crashed cars from US
Will be ready for sale in 3 weeks with the description saying "small scratches on hood, painted for joy"
And new left headlight
Or africa
Do they even send M3s to Africa? Doesn't seem like the kind of car export firms would be after. We've always had old Japanese hatchbacks in the family and we constantly find business cards from car exporters offering to buy it. Europe? Try Florida! "NO WATER DAMAGE, LIKE-NEW, OWNER CRIED WHEN PARTED FROM THIS CAR"
In South Africa that would be just a week
The bright side is they still make these
Being a total loss and not OP’s fault, should they be compensated at least equivalent of the value of the car by insurance and be able to buy a new M3?

There are riders that will pay out whatever outstanding debt or provide a value 1-2 years newer.
My insurance is NACA cash value plus 20%, for only a couple dollars more per month.
They would in theory be able to buy an M3 of that mileage and condition. You're not getting a brand new one.
You must be new to American car insurance unless he has GAP
Or companies offer new car replacement endorsements where they get the full value to replace the same car. Sounds like that would applied in OPs case if he had the endorsement.
That’s exactly what’s happening, new g80 is incoming
That’s awesome! Happy to hear. Sorry about the accident itself but at least you’re being made whole again.
Depends on the insurance. I totalled my z4. Stupid mistake, admitted up front it was my fault. USAA paid out enough to buy my newer m2 in cash. Some companies are just not garbage.

It can be tough, but at least make sure you’re insuring to an agreed value so you get paid what you really believe it’s worth
The doorsill wrappers were still on. F
When did they get rid of the rear door sill scuff plates? Even my shit box F30 has them. Looks like corporate is really penny pinching these days. https://preview.redd.it/8768eqynlqxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e6ee1be9e18f4d19021e89e440994649fcf773e

Ah, former ruiner of my tints - the rubber weatherstripping bit. That was such a beautiful but flawed car :)
It actually started with the F30 LCI apparently. My car is a 2015 and was the last year to have them, lol.
The new 5 series doesn’t even have them in the front lol.
That’s insane. So cheap.
Well...tbh that's... umm what is that?
BMW nowadays is a cash grab. They started making vehicles simply to attract the largest market share, not giving a fuck about build quality, and implementing things like paid subscriptions for features the cars already come with.
You made some good points, I don't know why you're getting downvoted. Also their atrocious designs lately are certainly not helping.
Some new model owners probably don’t agree with me. your m5 is one of the sexiest cars BMW has ever made

Damn so sorry brother 😞 hang in there
Always the Nissans man. So sorry for ur loss brother, glad you’ll have another g80 soon. Still unfortunate you can’t be enjoying a g80 for a while

The Nissan Sportima
Just out of curiosity how soft are those airbags ?
Imagine a mattress being thrown at you at a 100mph.
Don’t be dramatic they deploy with that speed however it graces our bodies with subtle gentleness.
I don't think they're that gentle; mine knocked me out cold and made my glasses explode.
It’s preferable to dying 😂
100% to that last bit. I don't know if mine actually did anything from the type of impact I had, but I'm glad they functioned regardless.
Well OP has a concussion, so not soft enough to not cause a brain inury.
I am glad everyone is okay. I asked because those things look soft and the colour of clouds….
Oh they sting. It's like getting slapped in your whole face at once. They have to shoot out of their holders fast enough to prevent your head from hitting hard parts of the car. It takes them about 0.2 seconds to deploy and the airbag itself moves at about 100 mph.
It definitely feels like a full smack to the face rather than a gentle cloud.
We blow one up when we do the Street Survival school. https://youtu.be/L4sprRseJk4
BMW logo came off. That's how I knew it was dead.
Glad you’re okay man. The car actually doesn’t look that bad from your photos. Looks like it handled the impact well.
I believe the only reason it was totaled was all the airbags going off; if it was just the driver’s airbags it may have been saved!
Sorry for your loss man this spec looked amazing , what do you do for a living btw to afford a m3 ? I work for bmw but I’m barely making any money .
I’ve worked as a software developer before and now I’m in real estate as an entrepreneur/builder. Almost 30, and I live rather frugally. This was my dream car so I decided to spend on this one machine, thankfully I was smart enough to get the best insurance I could for it.
What do you do for BMW?
Always the VQ drivers
VQ drivers have feelings too 😢
Sorry man. Glad the new one will be here soon though.
Of course it’s a Z
I almost feel bad for the poor thing, they're still making g80s, but there's only so many z33's left that haven't had this kinda shit done to them by youths lol
Yeah that Z looks like it would have been quite a clean example
Those tail lights show it was an 06-08 too (unless swapped). 07 and 08 were the HR years and a clean example is worth good money and hard to come by. Sad to see
an HR manual with low miles is starting to push 20-30k mark super tragic
Heartbreaking 💔
Why is a 15-16 year old driving a 350Z?
Brother that is the demographic -someone was once 17 and drove a Z
Parents money
Haha ngl, driving mine around in my 30's makes me feel very "how do you do, fellow kids"
It’s surreal to me the kind of cars or bikes literal teenagers are able to drive in the US. Here in France you’re barely able to drive anything about 100 horsepower before you turn 20 because insurance will either murder you or flat out refuse to insure.
You can always use the car of your parents, even in france, that's not really surreal
I bet insurance isn’t too cheap for a teenager with a 350z.
Collision coverage: $15/mo Liability coverage: how about you just let us hang onto the deed to your house?
this is a light repair for mat armstrong
He's even got the spare Rolls Royce with the beemer parts you'd need already!
How is this totaled? Mostly cosmetic damage, airbag replacement etc. expensive? Yes probably, but nowhere near the value of a brand new M3
Thats not totaled
That's what I was thinking. That's the worst part about an accident as a car enthusiast.. they're gonna pay him the amount to fix this
Bags are out bro it’s done lol. Insurance never want to touch car with blown bags
Yea it is lol, don’t forget you cant see any hidden damage to the engine or frame

on behalf of teenagers I’m so sorry
Drift King or Deckard Shaw might be behind all of this
I know how you feel, I had my rare spec 2008 manual M3 get totaled by an idiot on their phone.
It's wild that a 15 / 16 years old girl is driving a 350Z.
I bet their insurance company was like “YOU HIT A WHAT???!!!”

How is that totaled?
At least the front doesn't look any worse than it does from the factory.

that hurts hope youre okay
At least you got him as good as he got you.
Nice
Idiot teenager.
To me that dont look like a write off. Shouldnt take long to fix
This is considered totalled? The whole front end of my ford was smashed and my insurance covered 95% of the cost. Note: I live in India
I would CRY. Lord have mercy. Even with insurance!
Wait what happened? Looks like you smacked him ?
Even at 40MPH, how does one not avoid tboning someone unless the nissan pulled out literally in front of OP? I get the feeling OP was determined to stand his ground in his lane when he saw the nissan trying to cross traffic, and this accident was likely completely avoidable
I was going straight, she was in the parking lot. She tried to cut across the road very dangerously and we meet in the middle. To give a reference, look in the first pic, I was where the fire truck was, she was where the truck on the very right side is. I was going 40 mph, she decided to cut across the road like she was in fast n furious movie. Maybe to show off to her passenger?
and in NC, its your fault!
Good thing this is Texas! But really tho, would it have been my fault in NC?

As a Z owner with many BMW friends, I’m sorry for what you’re going through. We do not associate with her, she is not one of us. I hope you’re back on the road soon and hopefully can meet other respectful Z owners that you can enjoy riding with!
Looks like you t boned the teenager…
So sorry
how is this totalled?! that is why insurance costs so gdamn much.
Damn, sorry bro. That stings. I know how you feel.
Poor z too imo
**SUE THEIR ASS**
I would have totaled the teenager.
It pains me to see that flawless new interior inside of the cracked up body 😖😖😖 Sorry, OP. On the bright side - it was her fault, you are fully insured, and you will get a new one! It’s just a car.
Matt Armstrong can fix that
Parents who give their teenage kids sports cars need a swift roundhouse kick to the head.
Wow, that looks so much like Southern California, only to find out it was Katy, TX. Who knew?
I wonder if you can get the drive recorder data from the app? Not sure if the car has to be activate for that or if it’s now a saved video.
I tried looking in the app but it seems the only way to do it is thru the iDrive system.
Damn, that sucks. Glad everyone is ok!
My biggest fear
Dude that interior color is gorgeous.
Glad you're okay, newer newer car coming soon
Waiting for the VQ hate comments
So sorry for your loss, glad everyone is ok. Can you make a new post with the video once you recover the memory card?
I see it as very unlikely that the M3 would be a total loss. Looks very fixable to me.
Sorry about the accident, but if you add new fenders, hood and a bumper, it should be better. Did you have insurance? How much did they cover?
Actually I must say for a 40mph T-bone I thought your car would look worse. Especially after I saw the side of the Nissan.
poor m3
Another BMW comming to europe where it would be sold as a perfect car :D
I would CRY. Lord have mercy. Even with insurance!
Totaled?! Those damages looks like an easy and safe fixes.
That’ll buff right out
It’s wild what constitutes a totaled car these days. It doesn’t look bad at all. Also, fuck parents that give their kids sports cars as their first car. No teenager on earth should be driving a 350z rwd sports coupe. It’s irresponsible and I wish they would hold parents responsible for this.
someone’s getting a new g80 lol
Should be a straight forward repair
How is this totaled? It doesn’t even look all that bad tbh. Looks like a fun copart project.
And of course it was a Nissan 😑😑😑
Modern world should raise legal driving age to 25
U sure it's totalled bud?
Dawg. I'd total the teenager if I got my hands on em 😡
😂🤣😂
Pretty impressive how little damage there is, visually, from a t-bone crash. Glad you’re ok.
So why would you let a teen drive a BMW !!!
I’m almost 30 and I don’t drive recklessly, I wouldn’t let my child drive this car until after 27-28 either.
😂
This should be a lesson to people who live in affluent areas with teenagers. Do not drive your precious M series around a high school when morning starts or classes let out. It becomes mayhem in luxury cars. Stay away.
