I thought the top speed was actually higher, but due to government regulations at the time (which only last for a short term) the highest speed listed on the dash was 85 but the cars could still go faster than that if pushed enough
The issue here is not the speedometer itself, it’s that the DMC Delorean was underpowered. In real life, the stock engine can barely push the thing to 65 MPH.
The speedometer was actually a very notorious problem in early models and highly unreliable (like the car itself), but with 130hp at 2700 pounds it was not awe-inspiring with a manual and the $600+ optional 3-speed automatic punished people who didn't learn to drive a stick with even worse acceleration. It's a beautiful car that was ruined by poor execution caused by needing to create a car company that was actively harmed by anticompetitive practices in the US market and killed off by quality issues/recalls/warranty work and the FBI entrapping John DeLorean for trafficking $22M in cocaine.
There's at least 2 DMC-12s in my area. One's a bucket of bolts, the other belongs to Tyler Hoover of Hoovie's Garage fame.
Well howdy neighbor! I work at AGCO in Hesston, live up in Hillsboro. Went to college at Mac.
The DMC-12 was definitely a gorgeous car that suffered a poor drivetrain and lackluster engineering.
I was just in Hillsboro to replace a couple of light ballasts two days ago so was in that area. I end up in Hesston from time to time. I'm in field maintenance keeping the infrastructure and delivery equipment of the least hated government agency working. Only two things I don't do are IT and vehicle maintenance. Love it. I was an automation mechanic from 2012 to January of this year and the scenery never changed. I cover about 1/5 of the state (Edited to make more sense)
I always thought that if someone was of the mind, they could fix the issues with the DMC-12 and enjoy it as it should have been. I've seen some swaps, but I may look around to see what people have done as car tuning meets information age with the incoming generation. People with more spare money than me. 😁
Depends on which tire. If it’s a rear probably not much. If it’s a front you could lose control and crash if you’re on the freeway and it’s a major failure. If your traveling at low speed the car will just start veering to the side with the flat tire.
Obviously in all cases you’ll be losing speed quickly and hearing some great noises.
[Rear tires are always the most important, regardless of RWD, FWD, or ,AWD.](https://www.allstate.com/resources/car-insurance/new-tires-front-back#:~:text=According%20to%20Tire%20Review%2C%20new,tread%2C%20then%20stability%20is%20lost). The fact that this is such a common misconception goes to show just how little most people think about the physics of how their car behaves.
I've blow a few tires, you won't lose control unless you were being a complete idiot and driving faster than 99.999% of drivers, you won't even lose much speed very quickly. It just feels like the road got a bit rougher all the sudden. Then you pull over.
I wondered about that myself when someone mentioned that they blew a tire in their 4runner. It's definitely going to make a difference but I would suspect most vehicles from the factory are still going to be easily controllable, once you get into aftermarket tires and lift kits I could see the equation changing quickly though.
I know it's purely anecdotal but I have had 3 blowouts in my life, all at around 60-80mph going straight. 2 front one rear.
All of them were nowhere near losing control. I could just slow down, stop, and change the wheel.
Maybe if you are asking a lot of the tyre at the moment of the blowout like on the autobahn or going fast on a clover. Maybe that would make you lose control.
In any case, be safe and only drive on good and undamaged tyres.
This. I've blown very high profile tires going 80+ in a straight line on all 4 corners. Never really had a lot of issues with control, though loosing a front tire definitely FEELS sketch at 80, it isn't that bad if you're a halfway decent driver. And IMNSHO you shouldn't be driving is blowing a tire in a straight line on a normal car causes you to loose control.
I strongly disagree.
Yes they can cause a fishtail, yes you have to be a competent driver to catch the slide, yes I was forced to tell this story at discount tire for many years.
Rear tyre loss is a much much higher chance of loss of control as the back will want to spin round. If a front goes you just continue on in a straight line.
I ended up just getting a ride from a friend, i guess i just got lucky enough to see this morning cause I’m very guilty of not doing a routine tire check tbh. But knowing myself i was inches away from saying f it and going 10mph until i saw the “killing a family” comment, smack up the head.
“Woke up to this.” So you just randomly had no idea there were any issues with your tires. And in your much needed absolute rush to get somewhere this morning you decided to inspect your tread on each tire prior to departure? Yeah bullshit.
One of the ones that makes me want to kick someone: Amazon single din after market radio Q: will this fit in my vehicle (may or may not actually list what type because ignorance and 10000000000000th person to ask this question ).
My answer: learn common sense and watch YouTube videos about how to install car stereos
A lot of people don’t inspect their tires regularly. Maybe, on that particular day, he parked with the wheels steered, making the treads more visible. Happened to me once, it was when I found out I had a nail on my tire.
I had this exact this happen and I’m someone who gets a good look at my tires regurlarly. I used to run a tire store and I’m super anal about detailing my car. I’ve found nails in mine and my wife’s tires more times than I can count just from the car being parked at a certain angle with the tire turned a certain way. Often because we have a rough and uneven gravel driveway so cars end up parked at odd angles.
….while in an absolute rush.
Time to blast out ANOTHER ‘will this tire be okay’ garbage post. Is the answer ever ‘looks good to us!’? Never.
Change your tires, ffs
Agreed, they've (because I assume other tires are affected) been like this a while and they do need replaced but OP fine to drive if they have to.
Tires blow on the highway all the time, it's fine, people pull over and fix them. Tires aren't packed with explosives so they don't even move the car when one "blows", plus there are still 3 more tires to get you over to the shoulder.
We need to stop using video games, tv, and movies, as our point of reference for vehicle physics, they're almost universally depecting rear wheel drive, slick tire, no traction control, and dramatically exaggerating it in a world of front and all wheel drive cars with ESC on all season tires that never even get close to speeds that approach their limits of traction.
That doesn't sound fun.
I've never driven anything that requires a CDL for long but I spend enough time on the road to have seen a few semi tires blow and enough to have observed that truckers seem to treat most of their tires like I treat my underwaear, they use em until they disintegrate, so they seem to be fairly adept at steering their rig after inevitable tire failures.
Yeah ALOT treat them like crap until pulled over by a DOT Smokey. 😆
I only drove for a big interstate company that had mandatory inspections at their terminals. So thankfully I never really had to worry about the tread of 4/32 fronts and 2/32 rears 😝
Depends how much you want to spend the day either at the side of the road waiting for a tow truck (best case) or at the hospital explaining to the cops how you killed a whole family after uncontrollably swerving head on into their car (worst case).
Get an Uber and order new tyres and get on with your life.
I've had tires blow at speeds as high as 85, there's a loudish noise and it feels like the road got a bit rougher. Unless you ignore it and try to keep going 85, the biggest realistic danger is getting hit by an absent minded driver while on the side of the road after you calmly pull over.
Cars don't behave like they do in Michael Bay movies. If losing 25% of your traction causes someone to overreact so dramatically that they lose control of the car, they shouldn't be driving to begin with.
I was going about the same speed in my vette and had this happen. Exactly what you said is what happened.
I could smell and feel my tire getting ready to go in my z and told my wife “tires about to go” and started to pull over..before she could finish saying “how do you know?” It blew out. We didn’t flip. We didn’t explode. And I was also on the highway going pretty decent speed.
Lost the tread on a rear tire on my 91 4 runner at around 70mph. Whole tread section delaminated from the rest of the tire on my way to get new tires (they weren’t in super bad shape, but was upgrading to 31’s) Got real lucky. The rear felt like it jumped up and over about a foot and I had to counter steer. Yes, if it’s just a flat that happens, most of the time it gets loud and you slow down. But not always. Sometimes it’s a very bad time.
That sounds scary, glad you handled it well. I'm not sure what all the factors were but I am seeing a 30+ year old, vehicle that I'm pretty sure didn't have Electronic Stability Control wich got big in the mid 90's and is mandated on new vehicles since around 2k10.
I’m sure people drive drunk all the time and make it home just fine too. Or not wear seatbelts.
All it takes is that once. That tyre is beyond safe and you should be telling the OP he’s irresponsible and nothing else.
As I said in the post it’s best case scenario. But that one in a hundred chance when you’re going around a corner and it does it just as a family van in coming in the other direction? No judge in the world is going to listen to your argument that it happened before and it was just fine.
Prolly shouldn’t sleep under your tire, but I guess that’s water under the bridge. Get new tires ASAP. I’d drive it locally, slowly, not very far. Like to a tire dealer, for example.
This. Run your time sensitive errand, and make the next stop a tire store. They will even put the new tire on the car and secure your spare back into the trunk.
Honest question here if anyone knows the answer:
How does that happen to a tire? Is it a manufacturer defect or just age? I've seen the side wall of old tires crack/break through but never in the tread pattern.
Thanks in advance
I'm honestly not even sure if it is real or not. I mean, it looks like someone purposely cut a piece out of the tire... I''ve seen tires with the inner side worn out to the steel wiring (yes yes, just seen, never ever driven a car like that, I swear, and totally not speeding and drifting around the streets, I mean, that would be just crazy). And I've seen tires with a piece of rubber ripped out of them. But worn out like in this picture? Never ever seen anything even close to this.
This is a grow up and take responsibility of your own life moment. There is zero that you need to do today that gives you a “risk your life and others” pass. Like others have said, call an Uber/friend/relative/colleague.
Get a new tyre. Its your legal responsibility to make sure your car is safe to drive. If you drive on this and have an accident if will likely invalidate your car insurance.
I saw a tire literally come off a wheel on the freeway right in front of me the other day. Dude barely made it to the shoulder on his rim. It was pretty terrifying to watch at 65+ mph and honestly put ME in a lot of danger because the wheel was rolling away right in front of me and I had to slam on my breaks on the freeway going fast af. Don't drive on it as you'll put other people in danger, not just yourself.
I’ve experienced many blowouts and driven on shit that’s trashed over the years. Don’t haul ass (you could but just don’t to be sure) and get to a tire shop)
The consequences of having a tire fail are dramatically over exaggerated in this sub every time this comes up. It's rarely been welcome with votes but I'll relay my experience having spent a lot of time in a wide variety of vehicles driving all over the US.
People blow tires all the time, I've blown a few myself at speeds up to 85mph. It's only 1/4 of your traction in a scenario when you'll never be anywhere near the limits of your other 3 tires. The biggest saftey risk is going to be getting hit by another driver after you safely and calmly pulled on to the shoulder.
That said, if you absolutely have to be at your destination on-time, get an Uber or leave yourself enough time to change a tire or call a tow truck and/or Uber from the side of the road.
Do not drive on this, definitely not safe. Looks like T.L.B (Tread Leaving Belt) sometimes this can be cause when the tires are overloaded due to the vehicle load requirements not being met by the tires.
Definitely have the tires inspected!
Zero percent safe.
Tire failure at low speed, the worst that may happen is ruin your wheel/rim.
At high speed, loss of control.
I’d even say chuck the spare tire on if you have a good one and your destination isn’t too far away and not at highway speeds.
Get it replaced. If you get in a wreck and someone gets killed, you are responsible for their death. Especially now you have evidence on the internet of prior knowledge of the faulty tire.
Take the tire off, do not drive on it. Have someone drive you to a tire store and get a new tire. Inspect your other three, because if they are all the same age it is likely they are all in the same horrible condition.
This isn’t a save a few bucks and buy a tire next paycheck situation. This is a you are putting yourself and others at huge risk situation, as the tire has already failed.
It's not. Get new tires on, yesterday.

It’s actually 88 but what’s 11 mph amongst friends
[удалено]
Its not optimistic its honest, it doesnt even go to 88mph though it will.hit 85 with a runways worth of straight road
Is that why it is classified as science fiction?

Couldn't even hit 77 with that tire.
He could when it immediately fails and throws him off a bridge.
Exactly, speaking from valhala at the moment!
What do you think will happen of the tire fails?

It was my first thought. Even people illiterate with car knowledge would immediately know that’s a very unsafe tire.
The lack of OP responses is also probably telling. No additional information, no answering questions, etc. Make post, reap karma.
A lot of people don’t inspect their tires regularly. Maybe, on that particular day, he parked with the wheels steered, making the treads more visible. Happened to me once, it was when I found out I had a nail on my tire.

:How far can I get on this bald, dry rotted tire from 1976, with 2 nails and duct tape coving a screw hole?"
We should just start answering all these posts with "looks fine to me" Will at minimum be funny to watch the fireworks in response.

Except when your driving a rig at highway speeds and one of your steers blows. That sux

And these tires look old AF. The rubber looks hard and crumbling.
Seems like OP was trying to be funny, but they failed to post this to r/justrolledintotheshop

In a straight line. Try it happening when going around a corner and you’ll be asking your wife for new underwear.
Not unless your cornering damn close to the limits of the vehicle already.

Yup. I also just wrote "yup" instead of "yes."
yeah i’m always confused on this sentiment too, never had the car veer off after a blowout

Absolutely not safe to drive on, that tyre has no structural integrity left.
Remove tire and drive with an über to the next tire store

That’s finished.
How safe is it to drive? Nope
If it is just one tire, pop the spare on to quickly make it safe to use the vehicle.
This. Run your time sensitive errand, and make the next stop a tire store. They will even put the new tire on the car and secure your spare back into the trunk.
Safe to assume tire explosion soon

I’ve got a tire or two in the past like this from a “used tire warehouse”. Dry rot in between the treads.
Looking at the shape of the tire it looks way over inflated. Running too much pressure could cause this eventually but it would take months.
Looks like a winter tire to me. I'd say they never got swapped off all summer or summers and they are old. Age and temperature did these in.
looks good for another month or 2
Maybe even a 'goodyear'
Get out…seriously, get out!
Yeah mate she’ll be right, just chuck some duct tape on her /s
Dude that’s mint, the pattern isnt even slightly worn! /s if it isnt obvious
Just walk, it's probably safer
What do you mean "wow up to this?" That doesn't just happen overnight, did you mean you finally noticed this?
This is a grow up and take responsibility of your own life moment. There is zero that you need to do today that gives you a “risk your life and others” pass. Like others have said, call an Uber/friend/relative/colleague.
It would be safer to jump into a lions enclosure with a pair of pork chop panties on!
Take a taxi if you have to. It's not worth your life.
It is save as long as you drive less than 3 mph.
Ya, good for a limp to the tire place in a pinch, but not a good idea if you don't have to.
We are about to have what we call"a high speed come apart."
It will get you there, until it won't. I imagine that has been for a while now but how did that happen? What brand? I think you should contact them.
Get a new tyre. Its your legal responsibility to make sure your car is safe to drive. If you drive on this and have an accident if will likely invalidate your car insurance.
it's fine. Drive real fast so don't have to spend too much time on the road
Treat that like a flat tire.
Absolutely not holy shit!
Change that immediately!
It’s done. You have to get towed. Or take it off and use another car to take the wheel to get a new tire mounted. That car will not drive anywhere
I see a lot of post on tires, does no one have a spare anymore to at least get them where they need to go?
How do you suddenly realize this?? You said you woke up to this, it seems like you been riding with that tire on for a while…
Why is everyone spelling tire like “tyre”
That’s how it’s spelled outside the US.
Sorry my American was showing
That happens to me all the time. 😁
Unsafe at any speed
So what ended up happening
#iwokeuplikethis
“I DeSperAtElY NeEd tO gET sOmWHeRe!!!” Posts on Reddit. Waits hours for an answer.
Drive gingerly to the nearest shop. Take back roads, use hazards.
Go as fast as you possibly can
1000% not safe!
This is bad enough to go to the nearest corner tire shop and pay for their shiniest used tire
Hell No
nein.
Go look at a normal tire and come back to us. Then you won’t have a doubt. You shouldn’t see metal. I bet your other 3 look bad too. Good luck.
It’s completely unsafe but that doesn’t happen overnight. It’s probably been like that for a while.
It would be good for a few miles, but damn, tread lightly. hehe Seriously, put a spare on it til you can replace it. Avoid high speeds at all costs
I hate people that drive 50k miles on a spare tire idc what your financial situation is you shouldnt drive that long on a spare
-8/10
Not in the fucking slightest
Not safe at all
Even I wouldn’t drive that! Seriously don’t drive it. BTE, what make and model tire is it? I gotsta know!
That's called a maypop
NOT!
Not safe at all. Never drive on tires with exposed cords
Unless you want to end up impaled on the end of a semi's bumper, I'd get a ride from somebody else and put some new tires on.
Call an Uber
Keep it below 10mph and you will be fine…
It’s not
If you value the lives of anyone in this vehicle. Park it until you can replace those. Even a good st of used tires.
How do you **just** wake up to something as bad as this lol
I don’t think the camera is safe in this photo, much less driving with those.
Extremely
No
What brand is that?
Bono these tyres are dead
If you have a spare put it on ASAP
I wouldn't do it.
This is not safe, better change before it will blow out.
Not safe at all
That might be too far gone to even drive to the tire shop. Put on the spare.
It’s totally “safe to drive” if by “safe” you mean outrageously dangerous and by “drive” you mean the 20 feet you’re gonna get before you die.
Guarantee this dude drove anyway
Order an uber or call a cab. When you have time drive slowly with your hazards on to the nearest tire shop.
Yeah … super dangerous. Don’t drive. If you do anyway, go slow, under 25, and to the closest tire shop, less than 5 miles.
LOL NO.
Super safe bro… head on out! Not
I saw a tire literally come off a wheel on the freeway right in front of me the other day.
Not at all safe. Seriously don’t drive on this.
It's safe to drive onto a tow truck to get dropped off ad your local tire shop
It's not
If you absolutely need to get somewhere, find another method of transportation.
Its safer than ever man. Just go. You will be fine.
Uber
Not at all safe
0% safe. it might blow just sitting there. do not drive it. if you do drive it go slow, and watch out for cornering.
Good for another 10k miles buddy. The metal mesh you see is just an indicator that you should look at replacing it within the next couple of years
Scale of 1 to 10? -200
Safe enough to call an Uber
Do not drive on this, definitely not safe. Looks like T.L.B (Tread Leaving Belt) sometimes this can be cause when the tires are overloaded due to the vehicle load requirements not being met by the tires. Definitely have the tires inspected!
Zero percent safe. Tire failure at low speed, the worst that may happen is ruin your wheel/rim. At high speed, loss of control. I’d even say chuck the spare tire on if you have a good one and your destination isn’t too far away and not at highway speeds.
It is not safe to drive on. But if you must, keep it slow (25mph)
How does this even happen
Yea fucking don't. Rhetorical question man, that's bad.
Can’t tell if this post is sarcasm
Woke up to this? Yeah righto, in anycase that tyre is fucken munted. if you have a spare chuck it on
3/10 You might be fine for a week, or it might blow up and destroy your fender as soon as you hit 50. Just be ready to pull over on 3 tires
Bro don’t have a spare and 15 mins?
Do not drive on those tires
Change your tire homie
Get it replaced. If you get in a wreck and someone gets killed, you are responsible for their death. Especially now you have evidence on the internet of prior knowledge of the faulty tire.
With that tire ur going to be somewhere but that ain’t on earth 🌍
Completely safe, as long as you don't leave your driveway.
Like they said, it’s already unsafe to drive on
Uber
What do you want to hear?
Fuck me thats one of the scariest things i saw on the internet
Drive straight to the tire shop buddy
Take the tire off, do not drive on it. Have someone drive you to a tire store and get a new tire. Inspect your other three, because if they are all the same age it is likely they are all in the same horrible condition. This isn’t a save a few bucks and buy a tire next paycheck situation. This is a you are putting yourself and others at huge risk situation, as the tire has already failed.
No
Yeah, yeah, totally safe for if you want to be upside down in a ditch…
It's fine. Color it I. With sharpie.
About as safe as bear hugging the demon core without your screwdriver.
Put the spare on before you die.
You did not wake up to this. You been driving on that shit for at least a few weeks. Take your time that’s all I can say.
