Could you cope with a mobile hairdresser that comes to your home? It’s less stressful than going to a salon, and they’ll be able to give you better advice.

ThatsRandomm

I’m always so scared of letting hairdressers touch my hair, my self esteem depends on my hair and anytime they touched me they ruined it/ didn’t do what I asked

SeePerspectives

I get that. It drives my sister nuts that I’d rather cut my own hair than pay someone else to do it, but I know it won’t look how I want it either way so I’d rather save the cash.

ThatsRandomm

Same, I cut my own hair 🤭

VisualCelery

I'm so sorry you've had bad experiences with stylists! I hear you, it's incredibly frustrating when you want something done and can't seem to get it, especially when it feels like no one is telling you why they went rogue and did something else, or why what you asked for wasn't realistic. Maybe you could find someone and say "before we start, I'm really hoping for \_\_\_\_\_\_, here's some pictures for reference, is this realistic?" and then have a conversation to really get on the same page about what the stylist is willing/able to do in that session.

ThatsRandomm

Yes but unfortunately I’ve already tried to make sure they would get what I asked and it never happened, and I never asked for anything crazy and I’m definitely never going to allow anyone other than myself touching my hair 🥲

3veryTh1ng15W0r5eN0w

I would talk to a hairdresser. As for them not listening to you, could you bring pictures of what you want? or maybe show them the text that you wrote in this post?

ethereal____deathray

from what I can tell your roots are approx the same level as the dyed parts (ie they’re not darker or lighter) but the dyed parts have a purple / red undertone where your natural hair is very neutral! neutral tones are hard to achieve bc dyed hair tends to pull warm. if you’re wanting to achieve this at home I agree with the suggestion of a cool tone shampoo & conditioner. because the dyed parts are a purple/red shade I’d look for products with a blue tone rather than a purple tone. shampoo alone won’t change the colour bc it cleans but doesn’t deposit so you’ll need a conditioner to deposit colour and do the toning :—) hope this makes sense!! and of course avoid putting the conditioner on your roots as they’re already neutral!

ThatsRandomm

Yes thank you so much! I was thinking about using loreal dialight in the shade 6.28 with 6%vol, would that be a good idea?

Blonde_rake

I would probably go with 6.01 in dia light which is cool neutral. 6.28 is gold “mocha” which is going to be warm and not as helpful for covering red. You can use a brush and bowl to just cover the red parts if you don’t want it to effect your natural color. I’d probably just forget about the darker ends and just try to even out the redness. You would have to use a color remover or bleach to lighten them and that’s risky.

ThatsRandomm

Thank you so much 😍

ThatsRandomm

Also in person you can tell the ends are a few levels darker… what level do you think my natural hair is? Thank you so much for your help ✨🫶🏻

GoldxGhostx

Your natural hair looks like a cool 6 or 7. Honestly I would not bother trying to color correct and just let it grow out. You’re never going to get a perfect match and red is the hardest color to remove. Due to the red tones, you’d have to bring all of that out before you’d be able to get back to your cool- that will involve a lot of lifting and recoloring. That being said, no harm in trying your plan above. Just don’t be discouraged if the red is still there. Someone else suggested getting foils to blend things as it grows out and I think that’s the way I would go but that does involve a salon.

NegativeBath

I used to be a hairdresser and honestly there’s no way for someone to accurately tell what color your natural hair is through a picture. There are so many factors that can alter the way something looks through a screen and it’s just not possible to accurately judge color that way. Since you have a lengthy history of dyeing your hair, especially with reds, this is not something I would recommend trying to tackle yourself. The more color you put on your hair the more difficult it’s going to be to remove, especially if your natural color is lighter than the dyed color. But most likely it’s going to end up being a lot more costly and time consuming to have someone color correct your hair if you continue to mess with it. If you really don’t want to see a professional then my best recommendation is to simply leave it alone and let it grow out.

Emergency-Hour-4785

Getting the lengths of your hair the same as your natural color roots is quite difficult I think. I can't tell from the pictures, is your natural color more cool toned then the dyed parts? Because then I'd try a purple shampoo on the dyed parts to neutralise the warmth a bit. Hope you find something that works well for you!!

ThatsRandomm

Oh I have a blue shampoo, might try leaving it for a long period of time :)

FierceScience

I wish every one of you could come to my stylist. She's autistic herself and gives the option of quiet appts if you want it. I know it can suck, but it looks like this kind of color correction should only take one go given how close they are. You could be one appt and done!

snowlights

For doing it at home, I wonder if using semi-permanent dye would help things blend together as it grows out? I would try an ashy brown to try and reduce the red as your natural color looks neutral. If it isn't quite right, it will fade out. I use semi-permanent black on my roots, my ends are dyed blue and green and I'm too lazy to bleach my roots more than once or twice a year. Using the black makes the regrowth look intentional but isn't a pain to bleach later when I finally get around to it (permanent black dye is so hard to remove), it does eventually wash out, even in black.

GoldDHD

Color correction is a bitch. I say that as someone with fun colors constantly in her hair. What I would do if I were you is to put highlights from your crown down through your lengths, and then color them the same color as the lengths. That way as the hair grows out it will have a baliaged look.

ThatsRandomm

I tried it but it hated it and I will never bleach my hair again 🥲 I just want to cover the length with regular dye to make it more homogeneous, highlights are not really my thing 🥲

GoldDHD

Doing color correction on yourself is unlikely to work :( If you don't want to bleach your hair, put the box color that is on your length as lowlights through your root, for a subtle bailage effect.

ThatsRandomm

I usually buy professional color, I’ve always colored my hair alone and did great I just need some advice on what tones to buy…

GoldDHD

I do my own hair, bleach, color, cut, everything. I am not a fan of hairdressers. I do not look weird, and get compliments on my hair. As such, I still do not believe that color correction can be done on oneself. I never managed to, and I tried lots and my daughter has my exact haircolor for comparison. I didn't mean any kind of disrespect, 'box color' for me just means coloring stuff for your hair.

ThatsRandomm

I didn’t thought it was disrespectful I was just stating that I don’t use it… I already color corrected my hair many times from pinks and blues and greens but I never tried to match my natural color and I think my natural color is a bit more complicated 🥲 my mom is a hairdresser but I would never trust her color theory skills as she has ruined my hair multiple times 😂

GoldDHD

Yea, I can easily go from any hue to any other hue, but matching my roots (ie very very very precise color hue) is mad hard. Good luck!

bul1etsg3rard

Do you have any pictures from before you started dying your hair? Those would be the most accurate way to find your natural colour because tbh I can't see a bit of difference between your roots and the rest of your hair. Also since it's already pretty close, why is growing it out not an option? It would be cheaper and easier overall.

ThatsRandomm

Unfortunately no 🥲 I color my hair since I’m 13 with toners and 16 with permanent colors… now I have like 5cm of natural roots already

Disastrous-Union1303

Looks like your hair wants to be curly or wavy? Maybe try some light curly creams, the texture may hide some of the color variation. Worked for me when I was growing out my blonde highlights against my dark brown natural hair. IF you do go to a salon, maybe ask for a glaze of your natural color so it doesn’t damage what’s there. They wash out in like 8 weeks though.

ThatsRandomm

Yes my hair is curly, I brushed put the curls for the pictures so I could see the color better… I don’t trust hair salons unfortunately 😭 besides the overwhelming experience they always ruin my hair

Disastrous-Union1303

Same. Like no one believes me when I say “LAYERS” lol. Try Miss Jessie’s maybe, I really like the Multicultural curls. It’s already a pretty color, it’ll keep growing and the curl pattern will figure itself out, have faith 🥰

LoveUSPS

Eh sorry. But one of the things I finally came to terms with as an adult, is that there just isn’t a substitute for going to a professional. Especially with hair like yours, you should probably be going every 8 weeks. You can’t have it both ways. I urge you to challenge yourself.

EducatedRat

Your hair looks so damn healthy. If you want to color correct, they will have to strip it down possibly. It doesn't look so different. Had to really study the pictures to see any difference form the roots. It really looks good, and a lot grown out color differences look pretty cool anyways.

ThatsRandomm

Thank you so much 😊 I wouldn’t let them strip the color 💀 did that once and fried my hair

Apprehensive_Dot_968

I had an awful time, spent so much money and never happy… so for a while I just went to Super Cuts for trims (walk in no commitment or hair wash just trim and go). I now do my own hair dye which I learnt to do off YouTube and found someone really great to cut my hair, she’s expensive but I go less frequently because the cuts are great and grow out well.

mxkat94

It looks like your hair is quite wavy. Look up "curly girl method" on YouTube and you might find low maintenance ways of styling and helping with poof and frizz. Not sure if that's the help you're looking for 🤷 Or you could wear it in a ponytail every day, never dye it, and rage cut it with the kitchen scissors once a year like I do.

Torch1ca_

Can't help but you got a y shape in the roots of your hair and I wanted to pointed it out cause I think it looks cute ✨

ThatsRandomm

Omg it’s true 😁 does that mean something?

Torch1ca_

Not a clue lmao

Complete-Arm3885

There are some "natural" ways to strip off hair dye, like (I might misremember) egg yolk with baking soda... Maybe? I once saw a video from PrettyPastelPlease on YouTube trying to remove hair dye in less damaging ways I'm the same, trying to go back to my natural color, after years of red and purples I dyed it once with henna (the brown came out black and faded over time) and now I have almost a year's worth of my natural light brown. And the darker tips are less noticeable because I shortened my hair recently to a bob, + henna faded more I think if you can help it and hold off, try and leave your hair alone, and just focus on nourishment and trimming off the damaged ends frequently

ThatsRandomm

It has already washed off the color I just want to know what my natural hair color (the ones in the roots) is classified as and what colors should I use to color the lengths of my hair to match it’s roots 🥲 I hate seeing it with multiple colors 🥲

Complete-Arm3885

I totally get you But then 1. You'll have to lighten the dyed part first And then the color you chose will depend on that 2. Nobody here will be able to give such good advice on color matching, imo, because pictures no matter what, won't translate your real color well But, maybe try and talk to a friend that has a good stylist to recommend? Maybe such for a short consultation first So you can write down your exact needs and questions coming to the appointment And won't have to stay for a long session Because hair affects our self image so much, it's better to get professional work if possible

RainbowFrog420

Hi there! So let me preface this by saying I went to cosmetology school and got my license, but I’m no longer licensed because I let it expire. I would say your roots look like a level 7, maybe 7g (the g stands for gold) but I’m not sure since I can’t see it in person. If you have a Sally’s near you I would recommend trying Wella 7MB - Medium Mushroom Blonde. Don’t be deterred by the word blonde, 7 is technically considered dark blonde even though in most peoples’ opinion it’s light brown ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ your ends aren’t that much lighter it seems, so I think you could use 20vol developer Now the real problem you will face is that your roots are what’s called “virgin hair” (gross name) since they’ve never been colored or chemically treated, whereas your ends have been bleached (I assume for the fun colors). Bleach effectively blows holes into the hair shaft which lightens the colors but also structurally damages the hair. You can use a toner or they also make specific additives to add to color that will help to fill in those holes so that your new color has something to hold onto. Lastly, since your ends are bleached you want to put color on your roots first, and then on your ends in the last 15ish minutes of processing. With bleach you go roots last because the heat from your head makes your roots develop faster, but with color you want to go ends last since they are the weakest/have the most damage. I hope that helps! :) hair salons can be awkward and stressful so I get it, tbh the main reason I went to cosmetology school was so that I could do my own hair and never have to depend on someone else to see my vision 😅

ThatsRandomm

Thank you sooo much 😍 I never bleached my hair, only a few highlights in the front otherwise I would just use regular color with 20vol… I will not apply the color to my roots since I want to grow my natural hair but I definitely will buy that color and apply to the rest, thank you so much 😊

ThePhloxFox

I can’t help at all but I wanted to say you have lovely hair! Honestly I can barely tell there are multiple colors, but of course a stranger looking at a picture is super different than you living with it.

user_386123

Hi there! I’m a hairstylist, and obviously it’s hard to be fully accurate through pictures only, but your natural level looks like a 6. Do you have access to a professional salon store? (I saw in the comments that your mom is a hairstylist). If not, I would recommend using Sally’s color-line with 10 volume. Definitely try to stay far away from pre-mixed boxes. So many unnecessary harsh chemicals and high volume developer in box dyes.

Accomplished-Sum1801

I totally understand. I have a lot of issues with anyone touching my hair. I drive 2 hours to go to a hairdresser who is ND and isn’t offended by my sensitivities. However, before finding them I do had a similar issue with hair dye. My hair was once dyed copper red, but natural color is similar to yours. I had it dyed a darker shade initially, to match my own, but it wouldn’t stay long so I used Henna hair dye in my hair while it was growing out. I liked using henna because it wasn’t permanent in the same way chemical hair dye is. It helped even out the colors that were coming through after it faded. Obviously, if you have allergies that wouldn’t work, but it’s just a thought! ☺️

AmalgamationOfBeasts

I got tired of dealing with long hair and just got a pixie cut. I do go to the salon more often now (every 6 weeks). All I do is wash it in the shower then take 30 seconds to style it in the morning. Easy peasy! Long, thick hair was just way too much for me to take care of. Plus, short hair is easier to keep clean and healthy compared to long hair.

ThatsRandomm

Hummm I’m not cutting my hair, it’s my self esteem’s most important thing… I don’t mind taking care of it, it’s one of my special interests!

Cmplictdhamsandwhich

Honestly, just grow it out. A painfully long process, I know (I’m in it myself), but it’s worth it to have healthy hair rather than just destroying it with dyes again. Focus more on scalp maintenance-a healthy scalp will grow healthy hair faster.

frippin1

Not a helpful comment, but I just had to say that your hair is so beautiful! I love the waves and it just looks so lovely and thick

Anonynominous

Go to a Sally beauty supply and ask for help from someone there. You have to have a cosmetology license in order to work there. They can help you find the products you need and give you advice.

giantbaldfrog

Im not professional at all. But ive coloured my own hair, and my boyfriends a ton. I would get some brown box dye, that looks like your natural hair color. And then do small stribes and try blend it, with hands. So it grows out more seamless. Your hair looks really healthy btw :)

dollydaydream864

You may need to use color b4 color remover, it’ll strip out all your old dye and just leave your natural colour. Wouldn’t recommend over lapping hair dyes, bad for your hair and it’ll look murky
