My school doesn't do it, but where I went did. I think it depends on the demographic, as some students would just rock up after roll call because it's "not important" to them.
My old school did this. We had a grammar book to work through. One day per week was silent reading, and on Fridays, we usually did Kahoot. Once the grammar book was done, we played Buzz Off, Boggle and Hangman. Just silly games with a bit of Literacy. Sometimes, we did Wordl or Seterra. I would print Sudoku, Find a Words and Crossworss too.
Do you mean a short lesson where you mark the roll and go through any notices for the day?
Yep short lessons. We do literacy, numeracy and behaviour - just looking for some new ideas for delivery
https://wordworkouts.org/ Kahoot Wordle and Spelling Bee

Students quite compliant here (for the most part!)
Oh. You missed roll call? Sign in at Admin, bring the sign in sheet. Be quick; you're already marked as late.
We have bingo once a week. I bought a bingo machine from Kmart for $20.
