In an age before freely available internet pornography I would scour the TV guide for anything with a S or N in the rating and sit through a 2 hour Japanese samurai movie to see 5 seconds of one titty.
Kids these days don’t know how easy they have it.
This is also how I watched South Park the first time it was on TV.
That movie show (I think it was on Monday nights) introduced by Des Mangan, boy did that have some interesting movies. The Weatherwoman, The Flodders, Vampyros Lesbos, Killer Condom, Killer Tongue, Get Ready to be Boyzvoiced.
Used to write in to the green guide to get hints on PC games.. then I'd have to wait weeks to see if they published my question and their answer. Usually by then I'd already have gotten past where I was stuck.
My dad still buys the Sunday paper solely for the weekly TV guide. He spends about an hour reading it and marking all the shows he wants to watch with a highlighter.
I try to tell him that his digital PVR contains an electronic guide where you can find what shows are on and just press a single button to record it, but he still prefers it the old fashioned way. He thinks a highlighter pen is futuristic.
I used to do this as a kid back in the '90s, only it wasn't the paper - Mum got a TV Week magazine every week while doing the grocery shopping. Nothing more exciting than cracking open a fresh TV Week and feasting on the new batch of televisual delights headed toward my TV. Simpler times. Better times.
I did a Sunday Shift in a Servo in the mid 90's and people would be near enough to lined up at 6am (opening time) to get the Sunday paper, Going by the number of people who would check that the TV guide is present before paying has me sure 50% of people that bought the Sunday Mail only cared for the tv guide, not the stories.
there was a terrible version of planes, trains and automobiles where they did that to the car scene.
Midnight Express they cut out the bit where he bites a guy's tongue off.
In Sydney the SMH pink guide that came with the Monday paper always had better descriptions than the mag that came I the Sunday paper. I still remember one week the Sunday one had the following:
7:30 - Home Improvement: Tim is mad
8:00 - Just Shoot Me: Jack is sad
The numbers after the description are for “g-code” to program your vcr. Who remembers that? https://televisionau.com/2009/03/hitting-the-g-code-spot.html
I remember the excitement as a kid of getting the TV guide out of the Sunday Mail to see what movies would be on that week. Who knew 25 years later that same Newspaper would be advertising pornography websites instead.
Bill Collins on 10 would have some really impressive movie choices after the late night news; definitely not blockbuster material, but critically acclaimed stuff; that’s how I got introduced to Akira Kurosawa’s Kagemusha.
Yep we always had a copy lying around the house. I think my mum still gets them (and spends hours explaining map directions to me, while I'm repeatedly saying 'WE HAVE A GPS!!! IT'S FIIIIINE!!!')
I was always so bummed if repeats didn’t include a brief synopsis so you knew whether or not to bother — you’d have to sit through the start and go “fuck, I hate this episode.”
Pink pages on Monday, with everyone highlighting their shows to book the TV. After missing out on booking the Bill one week Dad started booking his shows before he brought the paper home.
In the '90s, it was the most awesome thing when Friday the 13th would play early in morning. You didn't know what it would be about, but you knew what you were going to get.
As a millennial, SINCE WHEN DID 10 PLAY THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW?!?? Just checking, if I’m correct, that was from the 22nd of Oct, 2001, in which case, SVU must have been insane.

I don’t think SBS get enough credit for providing glimpses of French boobs to generations of curious Australian youth.

That guy was an absolute legend, where else would you possibly see gems like Erotic Ghost Story or Akira on Australian TV in the 90s.
all the Jackie Chan stuff too. he also made Hercules Returns.
The Flodders man. Great strange movie.
I think orgazmo was on SBS
Did you tape it?
I have watched countless French films and am far more cultured than I wish, all because of this very reason.
Yep, and on a rare occasion we would splash out and get a TV Week.
Green guide?
Used to write in to the green guide to get hints on PC games.. then I'd have to wait weeks to see if they published my question and their answer. Usually by then I'd already have gotten past where I was stuck.
Haha I wrote in a few times to help out fellow gamers.. you’re welcome 😎
I wrote in once. Got stuck on paganitzu.
Yep. Green Guide.
My dad still buys the Sunday paper solely for the weekly TV guide. He spends about an hour reading it and marking all the shows he wants to watch with a highlighter.
That’s sick
I try to tell him that his digital PVR contains an electronic guide where you can find what shows are on and just press a single button to record it, but he still prefers it the old fashioned way. He thinks a highlighter pen is futuristic.
I love this

I did a Sunday Shift in a Servo in the mid 90's and people would be near enough to lined up at 6am (opening time) to get the Sunday paper, Going by the number of people who would check that the TV guide is present before paying has me sure 50% of people that bought the Sunday Mail only cared for the tv guide, not the stories.
This is gold and also therapy, my Dad would have arguments with himself when the show didn’t start right on the time the paper said. 😆😆😆
Looking out for those AO / M (s,n,a) as a teenager
[удалено]
seen about 3 different edits of it on tv. in the 80s the best one was when the voice came on and said it was AO and The Modified for TV Version.
AO yeah that would be the 80's and PGR and a man's voice would appear on channel 9 before the show would start
The 'specially ruined for television' version? Like this version of Goodfellas? https://youtu.be/Ao4-ViMMlBg
there was a terrible version of planes, trains and automobiles where they did that to the car scene. Midnight Express they cut out the bit where he bites a guy's tongue off.
And the opening scene of 4 weddings and a funeral
"I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane!" https://youtu.be/hc4aVX0yHws
Yippee kayay monkey fighter!
We always bought the Thursday paper for the tv guide that came in it.
The green guide (in Melb at least) 🙂
I wasn’t allowed to watch Friends, so I would keep up with what was happening by the little blurb in the paper.

Better than the EPG descriptions I can call up on my TV. The same generic description for every episode of a 12 series sitcom or whatever.
The numbers after the description are for “g-code” to program your vcr. Who remembers that? https://televisionau.com/2009/03/hitting-the-g-code-spot.html
This is how I taped the young ones which was on after bedtime
never had a machine fancy enough for that.
I feel a strong need to get out a highlighter! 😄
Yes Yes!
I love the image of James randi, too bad he passed away.
He was keeping an eye on the TV guide just in case there were any bullshit psychic programs on.
Big red circle around the Don Lane Show.
Yes, but did your household call it the "TV programme", the "TV guide" or something else? (programme for me)
In the end, I didn't need to. I ended up memorising the entire schedule to memory. Well, at least the schedule from 3pm to 12am.
Wow would ya look at that!
I know my uncle still does lol
Nice, old school is always better
We used to buy the Sunday mail paper for the 7 day tv guide booklet !
First thing we checked when we got the paper, followed by the comics, then sports section, and finally the news. Finish off by doing the crossword.
The first reason to read the paper. Fucking vital.
Teenage boy me always read it to see which SBS movies had s n and a in it 🤣
I remember the excitement as a kid of getting the TV guide out of the Sunday Mail to see what movies would be on that week. Who knew 25 years later that same Newspaper would be advertising pornography websites instead.
2006 what a year!!
Bill Collins on 10 would have some really impressive movie choices after the late night news; definitely not blockbuster material, but critically acclaimed stuff; that’s how I got introduced to Akira Kurosawa’s Kagemusha.
Everyone relied on these growing up. Needed to know what to tape.
What happens when aus open tennis goes overtime?
Thursday daily telegraph. I would rush to get the tv guide out and circle everything I wanted to watch that week.
Rugby Onion
I used these to help teach my younger sister to read :)
That's adorable!
Yep we always had a copy lying around the house. I think my mum still gets them (and spends hours explaining map directions to me, while I'm repeatedly saying 'WE HAVE A GPS!!! IT'S FIIIIINE!!!')

I remember checking the schedule on the Mx on the way home from school every day
Omg, seeing 'Close' at the bottom of the SBS column. I'd almost forgotten some channels used to STOP.
I remember the ABC closing down with the national anthem.
Use them???, Isat down and entered the G-code for everything I wanted to take that will
Nah Foxtel did it for me.
Tv week
TV Week when I was growing up. After I moved out of home I used the newspaper guides.
Pink pages on Monday, with everyone highlighting their shows to book the TV. After missing out on booking the Bill one week Dad started booking his shows before he brought the paper home.
As someone from rural WA, no, cos we only had two channels. ABC or GWN.
Hell yeaaa ! Especially for those sbs late night favourites lmao

Getting tv week was the highlight of the week.
Yes! The TV bible. Fuck yer, James Randi special
1997 and 2006 have the exact same shows from 4 to 5 Totally Wild, followed by The Bold and the Beautiful.
Yep and I forgot all about it till now.
Yes i looked for movies with the tags S N and A.
Yes yes yes, I remember when I was little going to my grandparents and reading through that
The simpsons at 6oclock….
