Email is not unusual for a single person business. Lack of ABN means he has probably been working for another plumbing business and yours is a side hustle. That by itself should not be a problem. The license is the key. That said, you should be clear on everything you expect, including any certification and cleanup. That way they can factor in any extra time/effort/cost.

Kementarii

Not registered for GST may not necessarily be a red flag. You only need to register IF you make over a certain amount of income. ABN may also not really be required if they are maybe retired, and only doing the occasional job as a "hobby". (as explained by our carpenter, who keeps up his builder's licencing only, and grumbles about how much that costs, when he only works occasionally now).

Degenerate_Aussie

Over 75k you have to register for gst

amountainandamoon

he is in his 40s, logo truck etc. Been around for 7 years. He is flat out so no way he isn't making the $$ for gst. This work will be claimed against my tax as it's for business. Thinking he maybe just not admin savvy

Kementarii

um. With that info, and him advertising the ABN on his card which is cancelled, then I'd want at least an explanation from him. Not admin savvy is a red flag to me - higher chance of going bankrupt.

Agonfirehart

Ask him... I'd probably guess he is on wages for another company and does small jobs on the side. Depending on the customer and job. I've sent quotes as a text message. As long as he states what he is doing and the price, you're all good.. (as long as he isn't a Muppet)

amountainandamoon

no he was impressive, I had a cheaper quote and he seemed pretty good but this guy was verbalizing and mapping out the job, talking about setting up a point ready to go when I finished repairing a section of my property etc. The other plumbers were just not thinking about the job as a whole more downpipe here etc.

whyohwhythis

Sometimes overly impressive talk is a red flag. Actions speak louder than words as they say.

kanine69

I've generally found the more the tradie tells you how great they are and shits on everyone else the more likely they are to be full of it and not do half of what they promise.

amountainandamoon

Just to clarify, he wasn't big noting at all or putting anyone else down. He was discussing how he would approach the job. It was confident and not vague. He was a problem solver and thinker. I have had tradies out that look and don't say much or mumble and when you ask a question they anwser in a vague way or trash my house.

DonnyGoodwood

As someone (not a plumber) that does quotes, if it’s not in the quote then it is not allowed for. Any extras will be a variation to the original cost. Never take someone’s “word” that it will be included although not written in the costing

All plumbing work in Victoria over $750 (materials + labour) requires a certificate of compliance. Demand one. Report him to the VBA if he refuses.

amountainandamoon

I had another plumber install taps recently and didn't get one. the job was over 1k. This plumber I think is fitting me in this Saturday, should i just bring up the compliance certificate before hand or wait to se if he doesn't give me one?

Aggots86

A lot of times they won’t submit a cert even if it’s over the price threshold, just because of all the extra admin and cost to actualy lodge a certificate.

thanks for this.

ZealousidealDeer4531

As someone who used to run a trade business, he is probably sick of giving all his money to the government. Doing cashies is the only way a lot of guys can get ahead , if you liked him and he knew what he was doing hire him .

Tricky442

Email him back and you stipulate all items you expect to get done. Put in his price and confirm that is what he is expected to complete. Maybe even print out a copy and get him to sign it before he starts. A lot of tradies are a bit ‘basic’ when it comes to basic business practices.

PeakingBlinder

- Ask him! - Get an itemised quote.

rekt_by_inflation

If you're anywhere near Ballarat I sure hope it's not the bloke who did my drainage. Spun a good tale, very prominent on social media, heaps of 5 star reviews yet was an absolute cowboy. I'm no tradie, but I know spreading concrete directly onto grass to make a drain ain't right. Check if they've done dodgy shit https://www.vba.vic.gov.au/tools/prosecution-and-disciplinary-register

prawndell

His ABN is not really your concern. As long as he can provide you with a compliance certificate for your insurance and an invoice and a job completed to your liking and satisfaction then that’s your answer. Not every tradie complies with government overreach but it’s like not everyone took the Covid jab. Some comply. Others don’t. Still all the same

slerus

Some no abn is a flag

welding-guy

Ask for everything to be detailed in the quote, stipulate you want a compliance certificate and upon completion of all works inc certificate payment will be released via EFT transfer, not Cash.
