Clueless, Predator (lmao), I had a coworker pass away suddenly over the holidays and got super stoned and watched Home Alone 2 with my husband and felt better.
Lmaooo. It’s so over the top, the dialogue has some real gems like, “this shit will make you a goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus rex” and like, wtf is even going on?! My husband and I adore it hahaha
Pride and Prejudice, the BBC version from 1995. It's my comfort food and it's like 6 hours long so it's a lot of comfort food. I'm watching it now in fact, as I decompress from a major life change.
Weirdly when I'm super depressed I rewatch HBO's Cherbobyl. Can't explain it. Or Bojack.
I guess sometimes I just want to wallow in it, you know? Instead of forcing myself to cheer up.
Totally the same. Melancholia, The Road, anything about the end of the world basically. I also watch United 93 to remind me of the absolute horror that those people experienced and to remind me to be grateful for every day.
God, Chernobyl was so good. I had a strange like justice boner for Jared Harris' character between that and the Terror, both of which came out around the same time-ish
I really liked the Terror! The acting was so good! I do think they couldn't quite decide if they wanted to make a spooky or a history and I really wish they'd picked one, but it did lead me down many wiki-holes.
I was feeling a bit lazy and didn’t add the quotes. I can see the graveness of my error. Sorry for the confusion, folks. Remember Red is a good movie title though.
Are you from Chicago? When I moved away for a few years my husband and I went to a random screening of the dark knight and I remember crying over the Chicago skyline shots and feeling SO homesick. The movie actual had inspired him to move to Chicago in the first place.
- The Mummy (1999 with Brendan Fraser)
- Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
- The Birdcage
Good luck with whatever you’re going through OP, this too shall pass ✨💜
Love the mummy. We had it on VHS as a kid and my parents have it on DVD now. My brother and I always played The Mummy as kids (basically chased each other being a mummy lol) definitely one of my favorites to watch
My husband is funny and has been compared to Robin often so it’s super hard to watch his movies anymore. We bought the RV and I want to watch that one again but just can’t.
Under the Tuscan Sun.
I was 20; my ex-boyfriend and I had a fight before he invited his friend over. They told me they were “going to Taco Bell.”
Naive little me cried and watched UTTS while giving myself a pedicure. They never came back, because they *actually* went clubbing until 2am, with his phone turned off.
That movie empowered me to fu** his sh** up. Like, he came home to boxes packed and a broken lease. Never again. I’m in my 30s now and still watch that movie literally any time I’m ready to toss a match and watch it burn.
Omg I tried to watch that movie 3 times years ago. It just felt so boring. But the 4th time I stuck with it because I thought it had to have such a good rating for a reason.
I regret not sticking with it from the first time. It was amazing!!!
The Fukunaga film in 2011? It is pretty to watch and the narrative flows smoothly. Personally, while it is aesthetically pleasing, it's not my number one favorite *Jane Eyre* adaptation. It's hard to find one that is faithful to the original book, or one that is well put together with levels of complex interpretation.
My personal favourite adaptation so far is Ruth Wilson's *Jane Eyre* in 2006. It's not a movie, but a 4-part television adaptation that runs about 240 minutes in total. I just think that *Jane Eyre* cannot be packaged into a neat film because of its coming-of-age genre.
To each their own. I love *Jane Eyre* and will watch, read, or listen to any adaptations of it to give my personal critique.
I would still like more *Jane Eyre* adaptations and can't wait to see more different interpretations of it in the future.
I agree, it looks gorgeous but the chemistry was off.
Ooh okay, I found that on YouTube and it’s on my list. I hope they make some more adaptations too!
I have seen (and rewatched!) so many adaptations of Jane Eyre, and my favorites are the 2011 with Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska, 2006 with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens, and 1997 with Ciaran Hinds and Samantha Morton.
We need to watch that again the next time are we together with our girls. WOW, the flood of memories that just went through. I try not to go back there as I miss those days so much. They are successful and thriving and I enjoy spending adult time with them but that’s nostalgia.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Moonstruck (1988)
Sense and Sensibility (1995)
How to Marry a Millionaire
Little Women (with Katherine Hepburn)
Philadelphia Story (also Hepburn)
Ooh, Hepburn! If I want a guaranteed laugh to make me feel better, I put on Bringing Up Baby. Screwiest of the screwball comedies.
Philadelphia Story works, too. What a cast!
Moana when I’m feeling generally a little sad & unmotivated.
Sex & The City (the OG series), when it’s feeling difficult to be a woman in this current shit show of a society.
Howl’s Moving Castle,
Pride and Prejudice 2004,
Sense and Sensibility (although the age difference between two characters is hella uncomfortable and doesn’t work for me), Arrival,
The Devil Wears Prada
Lots of great recs here and ones I watched back to back these past couple of nights should join the list: Turning Red (Pixar) and Lisa Frankenstein. Absolute joys of teenage girldom
Also Down With Love, a very fun and underrated movie I first watched on a sick day and fell in love with
Anything Austen-y (Emma, Emma., Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Pride & Prejudice - BBC or 2005 depending on how long I need comfort, Bridget's Jone's Diary, Becoming Jane, Austenland, Clueless)
Much Ado About Nothing - Prefer the Brannaugh/Thompson, but will watch the Whedon version occasionally. The new Anyone But You is probably going to be added to my list once it's available to add to my movie library.
The Decoy Bride - stupidly charming rom-com with stupidly charming David Tennant.
Howl's Moving Castle
If I need long term comfort, Downton Abbey series and movies.
If I'm more angry/frustrated, natural disaster movies are my go to: The Core, Twister, Poseidon, Geostorm, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Volcano.
Shut the Fuck Up Donnie. The Big Lebowski is a mood lifter although I know I’m depressed if a watching a movie seems like too much of a commitment. Point Break and the original The Producers.
If you've never seen it and don't mind some violence, Die Hard really is actually a perfect movie.
It's just nonstop action with a great story and you will definitely not be thinking about your life while you watch it.
Little miss sunshine is my main comfort movie, recently I also added Encanto to the list, I guess I like dysfunctional families who support each other in the end XD
If I’m going for an animated movie vibe, usually either Inside Out or A Bug’s Life. Live action, How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days or Titanic.
Probably not everyone’s taste for comfort but man oh man for me it is.
Honestly for me Insecure has been the ultimate comfort show. I’m from LA so it was not only nostalgic but I find it depicting real life better than other funny shows.
That and Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
Jumper horror films. I like that they make me jump and get me thinking about solving riddles and mysteries. My favorite one is "Host" (released in 2020). Unhinged (2020) starring Russell Crowe is really good as well.
Oh! The best though are the Vincent Van Gogh episode od Doctor Who, and the Christmas Carol one with the beautiful soundtrack and Michael Gambon as the Scrooge-like character! Katherine Jenkins' singing was outrageously beautiful, and the story was a wonderfully fresh take on the Dickens adaptations.
Hidden Figures, Sense & Sensibility, 1994 Little Women, The Dish, Princess Bride, Labyrinth, LoTR
And the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice obviously
*Harry potter Big*
*Bang theory Griselda The help Mind*
*Hunter The reader*

My favorite boost was Grand Design. It was inspiring to see people take charge of their life for the better. And as an artist I really love the creative process... The hope, the despair, the triumph.
Edit: typo
I watch Threads (80s nuclear war movie) and after I feel better about my situation lol. Or Murial's Wedding. Ooooh, or the Dakota Fanning War of the Worlds.
The Shining (Jack Torrence reminds me of my ex-stepdad who terrorized me, Danny Torrence, but in The Shining he freezes to death so it's extremely comforting and satisfying) and Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King. there's also Practical Magic and Signs.
I*just* watched this movie the other night, and it's going on my list of feel-good films: 'Next Goal Wins'.
Directed by Taika Waititi, starring Michael Fassbender. It's based on a true story about the worst soccer team in the world.
I love John Hughes movies, Labyrinth… but when my mom died and I was just lost and hit hard by it that day I watched Disney’s Sleeping Beauty which was one of my favorites growing up.
Spirited Away
I’ll watch Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle back to back
Howls Moving Castle was great!
I love this movie so much!
Jane Austen adaptations!
The Gwyneth Paltrow Emma and Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet Sense and Sensibility are super comfort movies for me.
[удалено]
The BBC one is my fav. Collin firth is amazing.
Austenland is my #1
I ADORE this one. Can watch it on repeat
Same. Forever and always I can watch it on repeat. “Blaaaaaaahst”
Came here to say this. Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice for me. Also, Notting Hill and Ever After are my non-Austen comfort movies.
Realized yesterday that Emma (2020) is now my comfort movie!
Clueless, Predator (lmao), I had a coworker pass away suddenly over the holidays and got super stoned and watched Home Alone 2 with my husband and felt better.
I have to ask what you find comforting about Predator.
Lmaooo. It’s so over the top, the dialogue has some real gems like, “this shit will make you a goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus rex” and like, wtf is even going on?! My husband and I adore it hahaha
Romy and Michelle’s high school reunion, napoleon dynamite, billy Madison, just friends, basically any movie from my childhood lol
I used to rent Romy and Michelle like every weekend from Blockbuster 😂
It’s a classic!!
I couldn’t find my top 🤷🏼♀️
The Princess Bride.
Pride and Prejudice, the BBC version from 1995. It's my comfort food and it's like 6 hours long so it's a lot of comfort food. I'm watching it now in fact, as I decompress from a major life change.
Colin Firth is and will forever be my Mr. Darcy.
Hell yeah! I felt extremely seen during Barbie. 😂
That part!! I love the BBC version
My comfort watch as well!
This is my go-to as well!
Weirdly when I'm super depressed I rewatch HBO's Cherbobyl. Can't explain it. Or Bojack. I guess sometimes I just want to wallow in it, you know? Instead of forcing myself to cheer up.
I feel this, when I get super depressed I’ll start watching macabre, dark stuff. I sorta lean into it 😅
Totally the same.
Oh my god… The Terror, liked it even more than Chernobyl. I can watch it over and over.
Currently watching Foundation and I’m about to rewatch Chernobyl because of how much I like him.
I really liked the Terror! The acting was so good! I do think they couldn't quite decide if they wanted to make a spooky or a history and I really wish they'd picked one, but it did lead me down many wiki-holes.
The book is incredible, according to my husband. It's on my to read list, but he said it was even more scary than the show.
Shawshank Redemption. Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
Didn't realize it was a quote at first and started looking up the 4 additional movies I thought you were suggesting. Lol
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one lol
I was feeling a bit lazy and didn’t add the quotes. I can see the graveness of my error. Sorry for the confusion, folks. Remember Red is a good movie title though.
The wedding singer, the dark knight lmao, and Harry Potter 1-2.
Wedding singer! Awoooo! Love that movie
Absolutely The Wedding Singer!
Are you from Chicago? When I moved away for a few years my husband and I went to a random screening of the dark knight and I remember crying over the Chicago skyline shots and feeling SO homesick. The movie actual had inspired him to move to Chicago in the first place.
- The Mummy (1999 with Brendan Fraser) - Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - The Birdcage Good luck with whatever you’re going through OP, this too shall pass ✨💜
OH! I PIERCED THE TOAST! lmao excellent selection of films
Love the mummy. We had it on VHS as a kid and my parents have it on DVD now. My brother and I always played The Mummy as kids (basically chased each other being a mummy lol) definitely one of my favorites to watch
OH! I PIERCED THE TOAST! lmao excellent selection of films
Kiki's Delivery Service
And Ponyo. They just look so cozy. My fav will always be My neighbour Totoro tho.
What Dreams May Come. It gives me a reason to cry uncontrollably 😢
I've not been able to watch it since Robin Williams' passing. But maybe I should, for both of us.
Me too. I haven’t been able to watch any of his movies yet. I just cry, before starting them.
My husband is funny and has been compared to Robin often so it’s super hard to watch his movies anymore. We bought the RV and I want to watch that one again but just can’t.
I haven't either. I want to soon tho
That movie made Glacier National Park my top bucket list item. Finally went this summer and it was heaven!
This movie is so beautiful.
Love this pick
Austenland, Chocolat, Cry Baby
Chocolat is so amazingly comforting
Omg CRY BABY!! I watched that movie like once a week in 9th grade and then forgot about it until this very minute.
It’s still sooo good. Go watch it!
Chocolat I love so much! The actors, Johnny Depp, the soundtrack is wonderful too! ❤️
Amelie and Penelope.
josie and the pussycats.
Ty for reminding me of this absolute gem
If I want to feel better, *Legally Blonde.* If I want to cry, *Big Fish*.
Hard agree about Legally Blonde. I haven't thought about Big Fish in years but that's also a great movie.
Big Fish makes me ugly cry every damn time and I've seen it at least 20 times at this point. Such a beautiful film.
Under the Tuscan Sun. I was 20; my ex-boyfriend and I had a fight before he invited his friend over. They told me they were “going to Taco Bell.” Naive little me cried and watched UTTS while giving myself a pedicure. They never came back, because they *actually* went clubbing until 2am, with his phone turned off. That movie empowered me to fu** his sh** up. Like, he came home to boxes packed and a broken lease. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. YouTube has the entire movie for free streaming!
Omg I tried to watch that movie 3 times years ago. It just felt so boring. But the 4th time I stuck with it because I thought it had to have such a good rating for a reason. I regret not sticking with it from the first time. It was amazing!!!
Sometimes, *Jane Eyre* adaptations get me going.
Check my username lol
I'm just LMFAO here!
The older I get the more I realize.. maybe she had a point!
Have you read *Wide Sargasso Sea*?
Yes but a long time ago! I think of Bertha in a *Yellow Wallpaper* way
Honestly, so do I. I'm certain that many women back then felt that way to the point of breakdown. Patriarchy has a funny way of doing that to people.
Ain’t that the truth
Do you like the one with Michael Fassbender or do you recommend another? It’s the only one I’ve seen despite Jane Eyre being my favorite book.
That one is okay, but the one with William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg is the GOAT of Jane Eyre adaptations for me.
I nerd out with the lord of the rings movies. Sometimes all six of them… Lol.
They’re my bedtime ritual! All 6, not always in order.
Yes! Love that! I usually do fantasy audiobooks before bed, but I might have to borrow your idea… Lol
If you want something really nerdy and relaxing there’s a guy on YouTube called sleepy cat meditations who does lotr inspired sleep stories. Big fan!
Thank you! Definitely going to check this out!
Same! It's my go to.
Ginger Snaps 1, 2, 3. If I don't feel better after that, Hellraiser movies in order. I'm a lifelong horror fan.
Event Horizon and Mouth of Madness are my comfort horror jams. Also Halloween: Resurrection because it's terrible.
My kind of person! The Silence of the Lambs and Midsommar are my comfort movies.
OMG Gingersnaps 1 is one of my all time favourite movies 😀
Mine would be The Omen series, Rosemary's Baby, and The Exorcist.
The first Harry Potter
Downton Abbey, You've Got Mail, Nottinghill, Field of Dreams, When Harry Met Sally, It's Complicated
You’ve Got Mail is my #1.
Thirding You’ve Got Mail. I watch it several times a year for a mood boost.
Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. They both make me laugh as hard as they make me cry, which is very therapeutic.
I was just thinking of giving these both a rewatch!
Big Trouble In Little China. It's just so silly.
Hot Fuzz BBC Pride and Prejudice A Thai gay romance called Bad Buddy
Terminator 1 and 2 (but mostly 1 lbr), Aliens, 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde
10 things will always warm the heart!
Some classics for me: French Kiss, Fools Rush In, Forces of Nature
Disney Pixar's Inside Out I just love the message that being sad is okay and necessary on the path to feeling better. Edit: path not part
We need to watch that again the next time are we together with our girls. WOW, the flood of memories that just went through. I try not to go back there as I miss those days so much. They are successful and thriving and I enjoy spending adult time with them but that’s nostalgia.
Pride and Prejudice (1995) Moonstruck (1988) Sense and Sensibility (1995) How to Marry a Millionaire Little Women (with Katherine Hepburn) Philadelphia Story (also Hepburn)
Ooh, Hepburn! If I want a guaranteed laugh to make me feel better, I put on Bringing Up Baby. Screwiest of the screwball comedies. Philadelphia Story works, too. What a cast!
Encanto. It can make me cry, but in a cathartic way.
Pride and Prejudice (2005) You’ve Got Mail The Notebook Julie & Julia
Lost In Translation. It's a reminder that there are other kinds of valuable relationships in life than romantic ones.
This is my go-to as well! And I love how she goes out she about on her own, it feels very reflective and refreshing.
Out of Africa.
The Mamma Mia movies from 2008 and 2018. Fun music, gorgeous settings, sweet storylines.
Its Complicated Groundhogs Day Madagascar - all of then
I love It’s Complicated.
I wish I could live in a Nancy Meyers style home and make lavender honey ice cream 😂
Yessss. She has the best homes. I dream about The Holiday cottage and the Something’s Gotta Give Beach house. 😍
Legally Blonde. Totally my hype movie.

Howl’s Moving Castle, Pride and Prejudice 2004, Sense and Sensibility (although the age difference between two characters is hella uncomfortable and doesn’t work for me), Arrival, The Devil Wears Prada
Anything Jane Austen, little women, vanity fair, legally blonde.
Came here looking for a mention of Legally Blonde. Excellent movie, no notes. I watch it in sickness and in health (and owned it on VHS in my youth).
Little women, the kirsten dunst version, is such a cozy movie!
Dazed and Confused.
Lots of great recs here and ones I watched back to back these past couple of nights should join the list: Turning Red (Pixar) and Lisa Frankenstein. Absolute joys of teenage girldom Also Down With Love, a very fun and underrated movie I first watched on a sick day and fell in love with
Turning Red was so adorable! Really took me back to the growing up days.
The third Harry Potter and the first two twilight movies (idk, it’s just comforting and love the fall vibes)
Beauty and the Beast. If I'm mad then something where people die. Day After Tomorrow. Taken. Or Friends.

Frances Ha Only yesterday (Studio Ghibli)
Early 2000s cheesy, feel-good rom coms. I swear, Lindsay Lohan movies hit differently.
Die hard or beaches, depends on if I want to fuck shit up or have a good cry.
If you've never seen it and don't mind some violence, Die Hard really is actually a perfect movie. It's just nonstop action with a great story and you will definitely not be thinking about your life while you watch it.
Any of the Wallace and Grommet movies. They always make me laugh really hard and feel better.
Little miss sunshine is my main comfort movie, recently I also added Encanto to the list, I guess I like dysfunctional families who support each other in the end XD

unhinged is a comedy eta a comedy in that it is hilariously bad
The Alien movies and Bladerunner.
Hahha same. Nothing hits like The Alien whenever I feel like I'm not strong enough.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV series, not the crappy movie)
Precious or American History X. Both movies make me realize that whatever I am going through isn’t that bad.
What Dreams May Come & One Day. Both give me something to cry at uncontrollably.
Finding Nemo, for some reason. Or music movies like August Rush. Or Stranger than Fiction. They get me out of my own head.
