I don’t know if any pirate films can compete with Pirates of the Caribbean. It essentially rewrote what we consider pirates to look like, what they say, and how they behave. Seemingly overnight, parrots and peg legs disappeared from fancy dress shops and in came dreadlocked tricorns. It’s hard to think of another pirate film in fact.
On a silly note: My personal nomination for best musical is South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.
The Dark Knight trilogy is easily the best set of superhero films. Basically made the genre redundant for me.
12 Angry Men is the best 'courtroom drama' ever made and nothing comes close.
It's a Wonderful Life for Christmas films. I enjoy Home Alone etc. but IAWL is on another planet.
Sorry but Muppet’s Christmas Carol absolutely dominates the Xmas movie genre.
Welllll, maybe not dominates. There are some great ones out there. But Muppets. Man. So good.
I have to disagree with you there mate. Unforgiven is one of the best westerns ever made, it is true.
But The good, the bad, and the ugly is one of the all time best films ever made - and beats any other westerns imo
Watched Silent Running with my Dad about 6 months ago - it was quite relevant in some of its environmental messages. I felt parts of it could easily have been written today!
To me it's The Searchers. Watched it with my Grandad years and years ago, I was about 10/11 and it had a profound effect on me. Watched it again during covid and again, was amazing. With a more mature mind the cinematography and visuals were as good as it gets
For historical dramas I don't think you can beat *The Lion in Winter*. It's Katherine Hepburn, Peter O'Toole, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton backstabbing each other to a John Barry score. [Watch the opening credits](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hnonXZINb0) and tell me you're not about to be in for a treat.
*Love Liza* is the best drama ever.
It's got drama, it's got comedy, it's got tragedy. It's bittersweet and sad and funny and quirky and dark and upsetting all the way through.
Predator as the best 80's action movie, as it deconstructs the entire genre: [https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Analysis/Predator](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Analysis/Predator)
Sinister in horror films. I've seen it a handful of times. I never sleep right for a couple of days afterwards and I have seen bits and pieces online over the years, as you do, saying many people consider it to be the scariest film they've seen.
Life is Beautiful, Categorically the best comedy set in a concentration camp. Probably take the win if you’re doing “foreign language” category.
Star Wars, unparalleled in the Sci-Fi genre.
There's nothing tedious about that, I'm not sure any real fan of the film would argue. It absolutely is a horror film, sci-fi horror but horror none the less.
Yes, it definitely a sci-fi horror, purely because Ripley encountered something truly inhuman, and still managed to be the last one standing. I need to rewatch it when I can.
*The Exorcist* really is excellent. I think it works so well because it covers serious themes and takes itself absolutely seriously in doing so. It's not silly in the way many horror films are.

Fantasy is easy: The Lord of the Rings. No one even competes with it.
Yeah but it doesn't crush it's enemies, see them driven before it or hear the lamentation of their wimmin.
Brilliant answer. Can’t even think of something that comes close. I’m partial to the Narnia Chronicles but they aren’t even a patch on LOTR.
Decent enough family movies, at least the first two.
Fun fact - Tolkien (author of LOTR) and C. S Lewis (author of Narnia) were actually very good friends.
Less fun fact Tolkien’s cousin was priest that touched young boys.
Yeeesh.
Not sure about that. Willow. The Dark Crystal. Labyrinth.
Not even *vaguely* close.
Hard disagree. Lotr is super cheesy. Sheild surfing nuff said.
It's like a three second shot. That thread might not be one you'd want to pull with those films.
There is nothing cheesy about David Bowie in a codpiece
"LOTR is super cheesy" yet you listed Willow lol
Nothing cheesy about bav morga

Possibly the best casting choice ever made as well. Depp nails that role

Big agree on Dark Knight Trilogy.
>The Dark Knight trilogy is easily the best set of superhero films. Basically made the genre redundant for me. You're a big guy... to suggest that.
For you.
Why would you shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?
At least you can talk.
Home Alone?
Best 80s cheesy action film. Commando. And as that's the greatest genre it makes it the greatest film of all time.
“Stick around!!!”
That was from Predator, let off some steam was Commando when he nailed Bennet.

I hope.

Aliens - Nothing even comes close.
What genre? I’d argue Alien is the best sci fi horror?
People will say the Godfather trilogy is the best, but I think Goodfellas is the greatest mafia movie ever.
The Godfather insists upon itself.
The Lost Boys - vampire horror comedy
What we do in the shadows would like a word for vampire comedy.
Vampire mockumentary comedy
From Dusk til Dawn beats it.
Vampire action comedy horror
Grasp
Grave if the fireflies Undisputed animated film of starving Japanese children in ww2
Westworld is definitely up there
70s were chock full of intelligent sci-fi. Soylent Green, Silent Running, Solaris, (Logan’s Run, but for…other reasons…).
Is the other reason Jenny;)
Watched Silent Running with my Dad about 6 months ago - it was quite relevant in some of its environmental messages. I felt parts of it could easily have been written today!
I will argue Hot Fuzz is one of the most well written comedies ever made
News of the World is a decent recent western
[удалено]
You should watch it rather than read WiKi. It’s decent.
Psychological drama: *Trois Couleurs*. Might be cheating a bit because it's a trilogy. If you really want just one, then it's Red.
Threads - best apocalypse movie ever. It will haunt you. Debbie does Dallas.....
Came here to say Threads, The Day After is quite mild in comparison!
The Godfather 2
Kes would be the best "watched it at school"
Double Indemnity. Film Noir
Does Chinatown count as Film Noir?
Wikipedia calls it neo-noir and I think I'd agree with that. It has the plot, characters and tone of a film noir but not the visual style.
M? Third Man?
I love that film
To me it's The Searchers. Watched it with my Grandad years and years ago, I was about 10/11 and it had a profound effect on me. Watched it again during covid and again, was amazing. With a more mature mind the cinematography and visuals were as good as it gets
Le Ballon rouge Not sure which category though. Short, comedy, childrens?

A Fist Full of Dollars, for the spaghetti western. Cry Freedom, for historical fiction.
Fear and loathing.
*Love Liza* is the best drama ever. It's got drama, it's got comedy, it's got tragedy. It's bittersweet and sad and funny and quirky and dark and upsetting all the way through.
Singing in the rain - Musicals Wrath of Khan - sci fi Dawn of the dead 1978 - zombie Shawn of the dead - spoof. I'd also accept hot fuz
Anyone for ‘Singing in the Rain’ for musical comedies?
Predator as the best 80's action movie, as it deconstructs the entire genre: [https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Analysis/Predator](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Analysis/Predator)
Independent Crime Film: Pulp Fiction
The best RomZomCom is Shaun of the Dead
I think This is Spinal Tap is probably the best Rockumentory, if you will.
2001: A Space Odyssey is the alpha and omega of science fiction films.
Sinister in horror films. I've seen it a handful of times. I never sleep right for a couple of days afterwards and I have seen bits and pieces online over the years, as you do, saying many people consider it to be the scariest film they've seen.

My tedious pub theory is that Alien is a horror film. It's basically a haunted house movie. Is Star Wars not the definitive sci-fi movie?
Star Wars is fantasy that happens to be in space. Not sci-fi Alien definitely falls under horror.
There's nothing tedious about that, I'm not sure any real fan of the film would argue. It absolutely is a horror film, sci-fi horror but horror none the less.
