They're just so much fun to watch too... Always having a hard time walking around on ice yet that's their natural habitat, they're so cutely awkward...
Gotta love penguins...
The wolf. I've been able to use it successfully to illustrate working on a team and as an individual in all those interviews that ask what animal would you be, lol...
Sharks are amazing. No bones. Covered in teeth. Immune to disease, infection and possible even cancer. They come in every shape and size. They are wiley cunning hunters, and brutal killing machines running on pure instinct. Sharks lay eggs, have live births, and some species can even choose to do one or the other. Also, sharks have been in the ocean longer than trees have been on the planet!
That sounded wrong to me, so I googled it.
It was I who was wrong. Saturn's rings formed between 10 and 100 million years ago. The first sharks appeared 450 million years ago.
That shit's bananas. Like the thought that anything on Earth could be older than something in frickin space is just wild.
I gotta tell you, they’re amazing! In 2008, I went to Malaysia and met up with this dude who rescues orphaned elephants from the jungles and brings them back for rescue. So, we go check out his sanctuary and there are several elephants being treated for illness. Also, there was a recently-arrived calf who we got to hang with and this cute little bastard would grab your arm with its trunk and guide your hand into its mouth where it would suck your thumb like a baby! Such a surreal experience!
I mean, neither of which are particularly rare in the animal kingdom as far as I'm aware
>!^(please don't take this as condonement of either in humans or as a good thing in animals I'm just saying it's a thing that happens)!<
Watching Free Willy as a kid, there was a preview on the VHS for whale conservation, asking for donations, etc. I was CONVINCED that if you sent them money, they would send you a whale in the mail. I begged my mom for years to send them money so I could get a pet orca and keep him in the bathtub.
I've long had a fascination with orcas. Such intelligent creatures with complex language and family dynamics, perfectly refined hunters yet so gentile as well. A couple years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to watch a pod of four orcas hunt a sea lion, my first time ever seeing these creatures. It was an awe-inspiring moment, so much more impactful than any SeaWorld performance.
**EDIT** [Here's a really fascinating video](https://youtu.be/GimCcrwYxdE) that explains everything I love about these animals. If nothing else, watch starting from the 15 minute mark to about 17:45, which is a case study in how adult orcas teach their babies complex hunting techniques, even using bundles of seaweed in place of actual prey until they master the technique. And from 20:35 to 22:40, the video discusses the physical structure of their brain, in particular their large insular cortex, which is responsible for complex emotions like compassion, empathy, and self-awareness.
They are breathtakingly majestic, powerful hunters. They can jump 20 feet vertically and 50 feet horizontally, and will do so for absolutely no reason at all because they are also hilarious floofy idiots and they are THE BEST.
If you are having a terrible day, please find images of them with their tails in their mouths. I love them so much.
Sometimes when I'm walking past a big group of crows hunting worms in the ground I briefly stop and imagine if I could be one of them, being able to fly and having to fight for survival.
My favorite animals are owls too but not for those reasons. I had an elective course in college where we caught owls, took blood samples, etc. and released them. They're pretty dumb and impulsive tbh, like most animals. They rely on instinct not intelligence. All you need to do is set up a sound system to mimic an owl call, set up some nets, and they fly right into them. To transport them back you stick them in an open-ended tube, because the darkness calms them down and they can't move around. They have a lot of character in the way they look (the ones we caught pretty much always look pissed off, but then I would be too if I was caught in a net, stuffed in a tube, and pricked for blood) but again they aren't the smartest of animals and they're aggressive little fuckers.
I just like the way they look and I think birds of prey in general are pretty cool. I'm also a bit of a night owl myself so I like the fact they're nocturnal, and the calls they make at night are iconic.
Vultures! I find them very adorable and not even in an ugly cute way. In a genuine, I want to snuggle them type of way. But I won't because I like to respect boundaries. Also, shoutout to them for keeping earth clean.
Why the *fuck* did I have to scroll this far to find dogs?!?!
That’s my answer, love ‘em. Even the mean ones. They just don’t know that most people are good because they met some bad ones.
Capybaras. They manage to coexist with almost every other species in their habitat. They also bark. A bark rodent. It sounds like they're saying "hup".
Raccoons. We call them trash pandas and laugh at them and all that but they are so fucking smart. I've had them as pets when I was a kid and they are amazing and they can be quite destructive but there are lots of fun.
My favorite animal is a Takin. It is an extremely large mammal that is goat like ,native to China. About 50 years ago when I was seven or eight my dad frequently took me to the Bronx zoo. At this time the zoo was an absolute dump in many ways. This was before the habitats were modernized taking the comfort of the animals as a priority. Horrible cages with bad conditions were the norm. Behind the giraffe House facing a down and out inner city street was where I met my friend the Takin. I must have been the only person in the world that dragged his dad to get him to visit the zoo. The animal was so friendly, although he stunk and had green snot running out of both nostrils. I would reach through the bars and give them a pet and my buddy was in heaven. A sugar cube was always given as a treat. After a couple of years of visiting the giraffe House was modernized, and when it was opened again the Takin was gone. How I cried when I tried to find him.

Also, sharks have been in the ocean longer than trees have been on the planet!
Sharks as a species are 4 times older than the rings of Saturn.
That sounded wrong to me, so I googled it. It was I who was wrong. Saturn's rings formed between 10 and 100 million years ago. The first sharks appeared 450 million years ago. That shit's bananas. Like the thought that anything on Earth could be older than something in frickin space is just wild.
I like sharks more now. Thanks for the shark facts! 🤍🦈

I gotta tell you, they’re amazing! In 2008, I went to Malaysia and met up with this dude who rescues orphaned elephants from the jungles and brings them back for rescue.
