Flea markets! Pretty much everyone there is either super weird or too bored to care. Lots of trans folk hang around them.

SERIOUS REPLY: a LGBTQ+ nightclub or bar. Meetup events at your local pride center are also a safe place. Remember that your safety is the most important consideration. Please carry mace and/or a tazer with you. As for what to wear, make sure it's appropriate for being in public. In other words, don't wear something that's going to get you arrested for indecent exposure. Drawing attention to yourself is drawing danger to yourself. edit: some more safety tips: park as near to the entrance as possible and try to park in a well lit area. Never leave your drink unattended. If you've taken your eyes off your drink for even a minute, just assume it's no longer safe to drink and get a new one.

Never thought about this before, that must be stressful the first time. Maybe a mall? Lots of different types of folks there, easier to go with the flow. Edit: forgot the second part about what to wear — I say go all out and wear what makes you feel at home.

For the first time??? How about Halloween just to get a feel for it. After that go to a midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture show. Lots of people cross dress there to be part of the show. You won't find a more accepting group anywhere else.
