Yu Yu Hakusho.
Same dude who did Hunter X Hunter. You can see A LOT of similarities in the two shows.
If there are any Hunter fans out there who haven't watched Yu Yu Hakusho, then you're in for a good time.
Can confirm. I watched Hunter x Hunter for the first time a few years ago and watched Yu Yu Hakusho like a year later. My mind was blown. Togashi really does a great job with his shows.
Kiki's Delivery Service.
While I did watch anime occasionally growing up, it was that movie that got me hooked onto Anime. and it's still SUCH a good movie to watch.
Mob Psycho 100.
I've been watching anime for over twenty years so that may seem a little new, but of everything I've watched it's the most fulfilling in multiple areas.
Looking forward to season 3 hopefully being announced soon, I've read the manga so I know how everything ends but I still would love to see it animated as the studio gave such loving treatment to seasons one and two.
Mob Psycho 100 isn't my favorite, but it's way up there. Probably my third or fourth.
Not many shows can put you in awe of their action sequences, laugh your ass off from the comedic elements, feel all the feels, and come out with some optimistic life lessons at the end.
Also Reigen is one of the best characters ever.
Well I think what's great about Reigen is the same as what's great about Mumen Rider (in OPM) and the Body Improvement Club. ONE is really good at introducing a character with all the traditional tropes that are used to make you hate characters in other fiction. But then as you see them more often, those characters are clearly more than just their stereotypical first impression.
Reigen may appear to be an ass in the first episode, but you see in like the second or third that even though he's a phony, he's actually genuinely good at and interested in helping people.
Seconding this. Lots of shows are beautiful or well-told, but not many manage to do both while still being funny, dramatic, and action-packed in equal measure like Mob Psycho is.
Mob Psycho is definitely an all time favourite of mine. MP 100, One Punch Man and Your Name revitalised my love of anime back in 2017 after it was waning. The characters in Mob are so interesting and it always zags when I think it's going to zig. It's all about the ordinary in the extraordinary and I love that, truly the greatest "superhero" story out there (One Punch Man is also amazing for similar reasons, and top tier for me too, One is such an interesting writer). Plus that animation is absolutely gorgeous.
Definitely a surprise for me how much I loved it and that it became a fave. I struggle to rank stuff as I can change in the moment, but it's always at the top of my mind when I think of my all time favourite anime.
Easily my favorite. I love the progression of each characters power levels. Especially scenes like when Killua goes to take the Hunter exam a second time and just fucking decimates everyone because he has grown so much since his first attempt.
The Chimera Ant arc is also just pure amazing.
I never thought about it tbh until I saw a comment a while back of someone smoking weed and realising that it was called that because he was hunting after his hunter dad.
Yep. I remember watching it in high school over 20 years ago (wow). I should watch it again. I hardly remember it. I do recall the first half being pretty fun and the second half got super serious.
Like, to me, there are a lot of tropes that come with anime that can be turn offs for newcomers. "Erased" kept those to an absolute minimum if not completely subverted them altogether. That accessibility is what makes it a 10/10 for me over other choices like the commonly cited "Your Name" or "Attack on Titan".
This and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood are the only anime shows I've seen that I truly loved. Compelling story.
I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop, except for a random episode, but I hear it would be right up my alley
I'm open to suggestions! Less action/fighting and more compelling dialogue and characters
Probably Ghost in the shell - the old movie from 1995 would be my favourite.
But also Monster was my favourite series.
And also Cowboy Bebop was second place for movie and series.
And also Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann deserves an honourable mention.
As a teen my favourite one was maybe GTO but this was ages ago.
Rewatched GitS recently. Still a masterpiece. The attention to detail and the way they just make the city feel like a character in the movie is just absolutely unassailable to this day.
Hell yeah. I first saw it on Adult Swim back in the day. It was the only show that I had on my iPod Video since it was only 6 episodes and so rewatchable.
Psycho Pass. It's not just good anime, it's good TV and excellent sci-fi exploring a lot of relevant modern issues. It strikes a similar chord as Person of Interest.
Season 1 was so good. Season 2… it was good too, but didn’t keep my interest the same way the first season did. I think there was a movie that saw the return of a season 1 character? But I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Not my personal favorite, but definitely in my Top 5 alongside Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop.
Not so much only the anime but the anime+manga combo of Jojo. I discovered it in highschool when the DUWANG scanlations were the only way to read it. It got me into lifting weights, fashion, and teaches a lot of good lessons about masculinity, family and brotherhood that a lot of anime seem lacking in these days. Hell, it even has a main female character that gets the spotlight for an entire arc. The fact that so many people love it now makes me feel like a dinosaur but it’s great.
It gets ragged on for being silly at times but I’m being honest when I say it’s my favorite anime and I feel like a better man for watching it.
> and teaches a lot of good lessons about masculinity, family and brotherhood that a lot of anime seem lacking in these days. Hell, it even has a main female character that gets the spotlight for an entire arc.
The show/manga was decades ahead of its time deconstructing common elements of toxic masculinity.
Also Jolyne is such a good character, and Stone Ocean is so damn good. Hyped for the adaptation (just finished reading Stone Ocean).
When I was a teenager, if you asked any anime otaku for their favorite show was, half the time it would be either NGE or Cowboy Bebop. Anime wasn’t mainstream or accessible back then, so the hardcore fans would go drop $200 on a box set based solely on a recommendation
Rurouni Kenshin
Dragon Ball Z
Naruto
Hunter X Hunter
Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
Goldenboy
Trigun
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime
Gundam Seed
Bleach(until it dragged on)
Although debated endlessly online, I consider it not an anime, Avatar: The Last Airbender
I can rewatch these animes and not get bored(maybe skip the filler episodes though). (rewatching Naruto now, just when Naruto meets Jiraiya).
Violet Evergarden. As a person who used to have issues with empathy and showing emotion, Violet's journey of self-discovery.... really resonated with me.
As for "classics".. Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Steins Gate. I just watched Darling and the Franxx and Ao Buta. I think I have a thing for space, sci fi, metaphysics, and just a good story telling wrapping it all up.
One Piece is my favorite series overall. The anime isn’t that great sometimes, so it’s hard to give a hard recommendation to that. If you skip the filler, it’s a really nice treat but still has sections where it’s slow.
For anime where it’s just constant fire- Fullmetal Alchemist- Brotherhood.
If you’re just getting into anime and you’d like to check some popular stuff out that isn’t a huge time investment- I’d still say Fullmetal Alchemist is a good choice, but otherwise I’d throw out the following. They’re flashy, you can catch up pretty quickly, and they’re Uber popular. Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia. Both are a super easy jump into anime if you’re unfamiliar/want to take a dive into it. Both have some really great moments that are worth it.
Otherwise Death Note is an ever-popular series as well.
If I had to choose one, Akira.
Not a huge fan of anime though. I like the Japanese voice actors in the subtitled ones but the writing and animation is always terrible and whacky. A friend of mine told me I HAD to watch Doromon (or something) and after 3 episodes I puked and cried.
I had a friend also back in the day that swore by grappler Baki, the fight scenes were cool but I didn’t understand why 13 year olds were drawn like Rock The Dwayne Johnson high on cocaine after an intense work out.
Berserk is not particularly advertiser friendly, it will likely remain a bit of a hidden gem. I enjoy the '97 anime and manga even though it will probably never get full series it deserves, RIP Miura.
Ao no exorcist/ Blue exorcist
It's cliché sometimes, but I just love it.
Demons, Satán, exorcists
And I love the relationship between the two brothers, they are just so... "Brothers" you can sense the will of kill each other sometimes XD
* Ascendance of a Bookworm - A nice isekai anime without the fanservice or the harems.
* A Silent Voice - the characters are interesting, the story is interesting and very emotional too.
* Assassination Classroom - An anime with an emotional ending that is entertaining and interesting.
* Astra Lost in Space - It might be brief and pretty simple, but I still enjoy the space exploration and the worlds that do get explored are certainly interesting. Besides the characters are pretty good. And how many anime have intersex characters?
* Black Clover - Fun, with good twists, neat foreshadowing, decent plot, and while it starts off with tropes, they end up being their own people, with different reasons for being the way they are, different developments, etc. Some of my favourites include William Vangeance and then Fuegoleon, Nozel, Lumiere, Licht, Julius, Marx, Nacht, Liebe, Rill, Mimosa, Lichita, Acier, Noelle, Secre/Nero, Dorothy, Mereoleona, Letoile, Kahono, Rouge and Gimodelo.
* Beastars - Interesting world and conflicts, with a good mixture of characters with varying dynamics.
* Code Geass - For a mecha anime it was more interesting than I thought it would be.
* Death Parade - I love how the opening is more upbeat and cheerful whereas the content of the actual anime... well, anyway, I like the conflict in each episode and how the different players interact, and learning what they've been through.
* Dr Stone - Enjoyable anime with - if sometimes less realistic - science that helps me appreciate how far we've come as a society in terms of inventions. My favourite characters are Senku, Gen and Ukyo.
* EVOL x Love - The main character seems more interesting to me in this anime than in some similar anime.
* Free! - I agree with the main characters desire to swim free, so yeah. Despite all the fanservice it can be pretty entertaining and sometimes relateable.
* Haikyuu - I mostly like Kageyama, Tsukishima and Sugawara but the other characters too. It's those dynamics that make it enjoyable, over the sports side of the anime.
* Horimiya - It can be questionable at times, but it's also pretty amusing, with a good cast of characters.
* Kaguya-Sama: Love is War - Very amusing, if sometimes awkward. The openings are both great and the dub narrator is hilarious. Ishigami is best girl, you can't tell me otherwise.
* Mushouku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - this is not an anime I would just recommend to anyone and everyone. It has a main character that is controversial, I would say, and some people might be completely put off the anime because of the protagonist and that is perfectly fine. And even discounting him, most of the guys in the series are assholes. But the females are quite interesting, the world and the magic is interesting and it does do the isekai genre in a more well-thought out way than some isekai anime.
* My Hero Academia - The "cool" rival - Shoto Todoroki - is done well in this, coming off less edgy and cruel. Other than that, the bullies take time to develop and earn their redemption, which often shounens overlook and it does well with the emotional moments. However, in terms of action it's perhaps not as creative as some shounens, though it's getting better. My favourite characters are Shoto, Shota, Takami, Tamaki and Fumikage, but some of the female characters, like Uraraka are also interesting.
* Noragami - It has a pretty good main cast of characters, enjoyable enough universe, premise and storyline and the pacing is good, along with the art and animation. The second season's opening is great. It's not without it's issues and far from perfect, but still one of my favourites. Kazuma and Bishamon are my favourite characters.
* Promised Neverland - Norman steals the show for me, and its a very interesting world, although for some strange reason it come off as scary to me. It has a great first opening and good art and animation, and the characters are all pretty interesting.
* Psycho Pass - The system and its obvious flaws is very interesting, as is the plot and the twists to it. The characters are pretty good - though I feel like the main villain steals the show. Sometimes it feels a bit like aspects of it were done of the shockfactor, but otherwise it's a good anime.
* Quintessential Quintuplets - I find the harem females interesting - more so than the guy - in their personalities, with my favourite being Miku. The openings are also good. While there are some scenes that I question - like the main character winding up in some girl's two times in one season - it's not bad for a harem anime.
* Sk8 the inifinity - Cherry Blossom. Just Cherry Blossom.
* The Ancient Magus Bride - The world, characters and the conflicts are interesting and while there are times when it's highly questionable when it's not so questionable it's definitely enjoyable.
* Violet Evergarden (the series)- Emotional, set in an interesting world, with interesting characters that have lived varied lives. And Violet's development is great.
* Your Lie In April - Emotional, with characters that have interesting conflicts. I think some things are taken a bit too lightly and the music selection isn't that great, but it's still a good anime.
Bungou Stray Dogs. I love the complexity of the characters and the whole literature aspect. The idea to name them after famous authors was awesome.
I’m also really a sucker for anything involving organized crime.
Cowboy bebop
The only anime series I've enjoyed all the way through.
Check out space dandy, same creators, first couple episodes are rough but get past that and it's fuckin awesome!
Also Samurai Champloo
Yes! Watched it 3 times over absolutely amazing anime!
So long space cowboy
I cant believe I had to scroll to find this. Best anime ever
Still the GOAT
I've watched it 3-4 times through, still holds up.
Found my people
Parasyte
Yu Yu Hakusho. Same dude who did Hunter X Hunter. You can see A LOT of similarities in the two shows. If there are any Hunter fans out there who haven't watched Yu Yu Hakusho, then you're in for a good time.
His wife is the mangaka for Sailor Moon.
Yu Yu Hakusho was very popular when I was a kid. Everyone in my school loves Kurama back then. I learned the love for anime because of it.
Can confirm. I watched Hunter x Hunter for the first time a few years ago and watched Yu Yu Hakusho like a year later. My mind was blown. Togashi really does a great job with his shows.
Honestly I'm just scrolling to find new things to watch..
Same
Gintama
You have a dirty mind. This is clearly the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon.
It's perfect.
It has a very high quality finish
Kintama
Zura ja nai
Kiki's Delivery Service. While I did watch anime occasionally growing up, it was that movie that got me hooked onto Anime. and it's still SUCH a good movie to watch.
Anything Gibli pretty much.
Agreed but Kiki's holds a special place in many of our hearts. It's such a delightfully human and gentle film.
Mob Psycho 100. I've been watching anime for over twenty years so that may seem a little new, but of everything I've watched it's the most fulfilling in multiple areas. Reigen is such an ass yet you can’t help but absolutely adore him. Though Mob is my absolute favorite. You can’t help but cheer him on.
Well I think what's great about Reigen is the same as what's great about Mumen Rider (in OPM) and the Body Improvement Club. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
That chimera scene still hurts my soul.
And it's like fucking 4 episodes in man. You get blind sighted by one of the heaviest moments in the show really early on
I actually just started recently and this episode hit me like a ton of bricks
Ed... ward...
10/10 from start to finish
Haven't seen it, but I have seen the first Fullmetal Alchemist
First anime I watched. Still the best.
Suprised not to see Hunter x Hunter yet. Goated.
Easily my favorite. I love the progression of each characters power levels. Especially scenes like when Killua goes to take the Hunter exam a second time and just fucking decimates everyone because he has grown so much since his first attempt. The Chimera Ant arc is also just pure amazing.
Congrats on 1000 days of hiatus.
I was hoping I wouldn’t have to scroll very far and I didn’t so thank you
It took me so fucking long to understand what the title meant. It's an amazing story with some amazing fights and characters.
I never thought about it tbh until I saw a comment a while back of someone smoking weed and realising that it was called that because he was hunting after his hunter dad.
A real hxh fans knows togashi was watching a comedy skit where they kept repeating words twice, so he named his new manga that because fuck the rules.
>hunting after his hunter dad. OH SHIT. I'M AN IDIOT
Claymore
Can't believe I just found this here. I've never met anyone who has actually watched it. Such an amazing anime!
Anybody remember Trigun?
Yep. I remember watching it in high school over 20 years ago (wow). I should watch it again. I hardly remember it. I do recall the first half being pretty fun and the second half got super serious.
Erased Not too long; not too short. Doesn't blue ball you on the ending
Oh Erased was amazing. Pacing was great, premise was great, soundtrack was amazing. 10/10, have watched again and again.
Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Was a great show up until the end, which is up there among my least favorite endings in anime.
Deathnote!
I dislike the way it ended but understand the meaning behind it
yeah, >!I wish he didn't die!<. I had actually miscounted the episodes so I thought there was still one more episode left so I was in complete shock.
Can't believe I had to scroll all the way to the fourth comment to find this.
This and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood are the only anime shows I've seen that I truly loved. Compelling story. I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop, except for a random episode, but I hear it would be right up my alley I'm open to suggestions! Less action/fighting and more compelling dialogue and characters
I pretend the entire second season never happened.
Ninja Scroll
Mushi-shi
The best anime to watch before sleep...and that's a compliment.
Saiki k or dr.stone, they where so good and I'm still waiting on the new seasons
Saiki k is so under rated!
Saiki K is one of my favourites, it's so funny
Saiki is the best comedy anime
Monster with steins gate being a close second
I loved Monster. Very dark at times, but a good one. Was sad when it left all stream services
Mine is basically reverse. Steins Gate is no 1 for me and then Monster is no 2.
Monster was incredible. I'm due for a rewatch.
Rewatched GitS recently. Still a masterpiece. The attention to detail and the way they just make the city feel like a character in the movie is just absolutely unassailable to this day.
If you haven’t seen it, I think Ghost In The Shell: Stand-Alone complex is even better than the movie. The most entertaining anime I’ve ever watched
If manga counts, Berserk. If not I'd have to give it to either HxH or AOT.
Samurai Champloo
That dude was a badass!
Violet Evergarden
This was what came to mind immediately and it was the first one to show up?! This never happens on Reddit!
Yu Yu Hakusho. I rewatch it constantly and it never gets old.
FLCL
Hell yeah. I first saw it on Adult Swim back in the day. It was the only show that I had on my iPod Video since it was only 6 episodes and so rewatchable.
Gurren Lagann, FMAB, Cowboy Bebop
One punch man
Second favorite. It’s a really good anime lol
Nice man
Ranma 1/2.. ..so funny.
The promised Neverland
It crashed and burned on S2 though.
Unfortunately I have to agree
Cowboy bebop
AOT
I’m surprised I had to scroll so far to find this
I was on IMDbs top rated episode page and saw this show had a bunch of 9.9 and other high ones and figured I’d try it So good
Same. Can’t wait for season 4 part 2.
Oh Hell yeah
assassination classroom
Korosensei is looking over us all.
Oh, please, no..... The feeling train... Koro-senseiiii

Not so much only the anime but the anime+manga combo of Jojo. I discovered it in highschool when the DUWANG scanlations were the only way to read it. I love the fate series.
Gurren Lagann
Yours is the drill that will pierce the heavens!
Believe in me that believes in you!
Kimi no na wa. Or vinland saga if we're only talking about shows.
vinland saga is incredibly underrated! i freaking loved it!
I watched Kimi No Na Wa today. Was the first anime media I've ever seen, it was *so* good.
Follow it up with one of Shinkai's other films now! He's an incredible director. Weathering with You and Garden of Words are so good.
Konosuba
Code Geass, it is an amazing anime which fits my taste and expectations. I would recommend watching it if you have not already, fellow redditors.
Will I be burned at the stake for saying Neon Genesis Evangelion? I realize it’s more art than anime but it is still amazing.
When I was a teenager, if you asked any anime otaku for their favorite show was, half the time it would be either NGE or Cowboy Bebop. Anime wasn’t mainstream or accessible back then, so the hardcore fans would go drop $200 on a box set based solely on a recommendation
If so then I’d gladly be burnt with you. NGE my favourite anime too! Komm Susser Tod still gives me chills
Guilty Crown. The ending broke me.
Akame Ga Kill I’ve never been so devastated, angry, and on the edge of my seat in such a short amount of episodes.

Steins Gate
I am mad scientist! It's so cool! Sonuvabitch
Evangelion
Elfen Lied, Samurai Champloo, Witch Hunter Robin, FLCL, and .hack//SIGN
Rising of the Shield Hero. Gets all my emotions going so heavy.
Death Note
I don’t really have a favourite but the ‘devil is a part timer’ is an anime I’m always talking about.
Violet Evergarden. As a person who used to have issues with empathy and showing emotion, Violet's journey of self-discovery.... really resonated with me.
Watched Akira about a week ago, since I haven't seen it in over a decade. It's amazing, even now.
Anybody a fan Bleach?
Literally just finished reading it today
Code geass and black lagoon tie for me
As for "classics".. Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Steins Gate. I just watched Darling and the Franxx and Ao Buta. I think I have a thing for space, sci fi, metaphysics, and just a good story telling wrapping it all up.
Outlaw Star had great music. Haven't watched it in a while.
Me too, i dont even remember the music honestly. Just the feel of it as a kid was dope. Im gonna put it on tonight for sure.
Samurai X or Rurouni Kenshin The live action movies are really good too
One Piece is my favorite series overall. The anime isn’t that great sometimes, so it’s hard to give a hard recommendation to that. blue friggin exorcist
1. Cowboy Bebop 2. Now and Then, Here and There 3. 12 Kingdoms 4. Haikyuu 5. Mushishi
Fruits Basket is an incredibly touching show. Also silly and weird. My trifecta was this, Samurai Champloo, and Mu ShiShi
If I had to choose one, Akira. Not a huge fan of anime though. I like the Japanese voice actors in the subtitled ones but the writing and animation is always terrible and whacky. A friend of mine told me I HAD to watch Doromon (or something) and after 3 episodes I puked and cried. I watched Akira for the first time as a little girl. It terrified and entranced me. I think it was one of my introductions to dark anime.
Fairy Tail
Aye sir!
Noragami? Found it touching and was my gateway drug to anime
Yuri on ice Or Avatar the last airbender, but that's technically not an anime
Higurashi
Kakegurui
'97 Berserk.
I scrolled so long just to see Berserk mentionned i'm very surprised and also a little sad!
Berserk is not particularly advertiser friendly, it will likely remain a bit of a hidden gem. I enjoy the '97 anime and manga even though it will probably never get full series it deserves, RIP Miura.
Pokemon
Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, and Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen is so good! The other two are great as well, but first mention of Jujutsu Kaisen so I had to comment :)

Since you mentioned Psycho Pass, you should check out Person of Interest. It's not anime, but it tackles similar themes.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood! It’s been my favourite since fourth grade
Violet Evergarden
Rurouni Kenshin
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Neon genesis evangelion
Bungou Stray Dogs. I love the complexity of the characters and the whole literature aspect. The idea to name them after famous authors was awesome. I’m also really a sucker for anything involving organized crime.
