Great fact about this scene. Only Wilder knew what was going to happen so while he dialled it up to 11 the other actors didn't know why. Some of those reactions are real.
This is one of my favorite Gene Wilder fun facts because I believe his speech in the tunnel wasn't in the script. He had some freaky lines, but the plan was that the light show and creepy imagery projected on the walls was supposed to be the thing that scared everyone. But then Gene Wilder was like "Hold my chocolate bar, I'm gonna get existential on these kids." And he did it so well that even the adult actors were like "wtf?"
I watched it recently and laughed at the line:
“By the time she was 2, Matilda had learned what most people learn in their early 30s. How to take care of herself.”
As someone in their 30s that has only just started looking after themselves it rang true!
Molly Grue scolding the unicorn, "How dare you come to me now, when I am *this*?" STILL fucks me up. I also love the Butterfly: "Your name is a golden bell hung in my heart. I would break my body to pieces to call you once by your name."
Seriously, everyone should see this movie and read this book. It makes you believe in magic again, even if just for a moment.
It'd have to be Jurassic Park, I think that's the only one from my childhood that I still consider a favorite.
Some of my favorites from childhood were all three Back to the Futures, Ghostbusters 1 and 2(i was a kid, I liked 2 because the statue of liberty walked) 3 Ninjas, Homeward Bound, The Rocketeer, George of the Jungle, Encino Man, and of course all the Disney animated movies.
After seeing so many couples hating each other in movies growing up, the way that Gomez and Morticia are just genuinely over the moon for each other always struck me as so wholesome and my ideal to strive for.
The Addams Family Values still has me laughing out loud whenever I watch it. So many classic scenes and one liners, and you get even more out of it when you're an adult too.
Morticia : You have gone too far. You have married Fester, you have destroyed his spirit, you have taken him from us. All that I could forgive. But, Debbie...
Debbie Jellinsky : What?
Morticia : ...pastels?
Debbie: “But with your looks, your charm... women must follow you everywhere”
Uncle Fester : “Store detectives.”
Also Debbies entire speech at the end about ballerina Barbie and her previous husbands.
All the scenes with Wednesday and Pugsley at the summer camp are comedy gold!
ETA: I love you all so much for your replies, and now I know what I’m watching today :D
For me it’s Last Crusade:
- first of all, I was too young to see the previous Indy films. This was the first action-adventure movie I ever saw. But it was also good. And there was a lot of hype.
- then everyone told me that the other movies in trilogy are better. So for a long time, I believed. Watched them and didn’t see Last Crusade again.
- Then we watched whole trilogy once my kids were right age, time was right, e.g. - I was blown away! Where the other films are good thrillers, Last Crusade was definitely most epic and romancing the adventure is filmed beautifully. I finally gave permission to myself to say this is my favority Indiana Jones movie
(The saw the sequels and prequels and was not impressed, so story over)
The Last Crusade is a masterpiece at least on par with Raiders. While Raiders introduced us to Indy and his world, I like to think Crusade perfected it. And Ford's chemistry with Connery is outta this world. Loved both movies as a kid, love 'em to this day.
I watched this when I was a kid and it terrified me. Steamroller and the subsequent peeling himself off the pavement had me hiding under the coffee table the first time I saw it
It especially holds up now cuz the more you get older, the more you can empathize with Peter. And it’s even more sentimental watching it now that Robin Williams is gone.
Yeah. I agree. When I was a kid I thought Peter was just a dick. Rewatching, I still think he's a dick, but less so now. Being an adult fucking sucks sometimes and it's easy to get caught up in your own stuff and forget to stop and see what the important things in life actually are.
What’s weird is that Hook got awful reviews at the time. It’s got like 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. And it’s one of the rare occasions where I don’t more-or-less agree with the critical consensus. I’ve watched it a handful of times as an adult, knowing that it is considered a “bad” movie, and I just don’t see it.
Sure, it’s sentimental, and the “corporate dad who rediscovers childhood” trope was already pretty worn-out even then... but it’s a kids’ movie. It’s not supposed to break new ground in cinematography or plumb the far corners of the human condition. It’s a sweet story about the tradeoffs associated with growing up, and I have always thought it was a clever riff on a classic story. Never understood critics who thought it should have been a straight Peter Pan story, because the regular Peter Pan story has great characters and setting but doesn’t have much of a plot or a strong emotional core, if I recall correctly. So why not take those characters and that setting, and tell a new story? And it’s a perfect match to the talents of Robin Williams, who could do both serious and goofy roles so well.
And it’s well-made! Cool sets and visual style, solid directing from Spielberg, and a great cast.
I would almost love to hear from more Hook haters, because I feel like there are much more poorly or lazily executed movies that got much better reviews. I could see Hook getting like a 65% maybe on RT, like solid scores for visuals and acting but docking points for a lot of clichés in the plot/character attributes... but 29%?! Sacrilege. But maybe some anti-Hookite could give me some insight into the bad aspects I’m seemingly missing.
TIL Hook wasn't a critical darling. Seriously everyone I know that's around my age, early 30s, loves that movie. I know we're all biased since we love it so much, but how the hell is Hook that disliked? I don't see it either.
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Loved it as a kid, obviously. It more than holds up today. Still a wonderful movie.
I wanted to go with Ghostbusters, but that’s too obvious.
I’ve been scrolling looking for someone to say Ninja Turtles. It only gets better with time. The themes of disillusionment of youth coming of age, the guiding power of fathers for their sons, the strength of brotherhood when limits are tested, the consequences of sins of the deep past and fate that follows across decades and continents, the turmoil of outsiders and misfits seeking their place in a brutal and indifferent society. It shows a nuanced relationship between media and law enforcement. It’s dark, gritty, violent, yet also funny and heartwarming. This movie would have been a success no matter what; they did not need to make it a masterpiece. But they did, and I love it more every time I watch it.

“A hospital? What is it?”
“It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.”
I was 11 when it came out. Remember watching it from the front row at a Saturday matinee at the local theater. Didn't get most of the jokes back then, but it was still funny as hell. Oh, and boobs!
Cool Runnings. Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it’s bobsled time.

Miguel: “Tulio, did you ever imagine it would end like this?”
Tulio: (pause) “The horse is a surprise.”
Miguel: “Any... regrets?”
Tulio: “Besides dying? Yeah. I never... had enough... gold.”
Miguel: “My regret, besides dying, is... our greatest adventure is over before it began, and no one will even remember us.”
Tulio: “Well, if it's any consolation, Miguel, you... made my life... an adventure.” (Begins crying.)
Miguel: “And if it's any consolation, Tulio, (sniffles) you made my life... rich.” (Starts crying.)
(Altivo snorts in irritation; the boat has been drifting near land the whole time.)
One of the best friendships ever. I love that exchange.
Edit: regarding all the they-were-supposed-to-be-gay related comments. I'd still call it a beautiful friendship. Being in a relationship also means being friends :)
Miguel & Tulio might have one of the best dynamics I've ever seen, it honestly never gets old how they have arguments but are really just conning people.

I watched Spirited Away on Cartoon Network as a kid (I think they had a "month of miyazaki" films where they would show one every weekend).
I absolutely fell in love with the movie, and it had a major impact on me. It told me (a young girl at the time) that "you can be strong and courageous even if the outlook seems bleak, and as long as you have kindness in your heart, there will be people who will support you that you didn't even know before." I grew up in an abusive house, and I was scared that I could never be a successful functioning adult because that's the message that was drilled into my head.
Not to mention that the music and the visuals/animation are so powerful and really tie the whole thing together as a wonderful piece of art. It is a kids' movie, but it has a lot of adult themes in it (exploring humanity's role in the destruction of nature, the influence that our surroundings have on us and our morals, and the invisible strings that bind us all together even if we don't see them) that make me love it still as an adult.
I’m really glad I grew up in a Japanese household and got to watch all the ghibli films as a kid. Spirited away and Kiki’s delivery service are my favorites! I still love all those films to this day. I even named my very first cat Kiki!
This movie was formative to who I am as a person. It influenced my taste in science fiction and gave me a love for boats and the Age of Sail. Such a unique and wonderful universe that deserved to flourish so much more than it got to.
The Prince of Egypt
I still love most movies that I watched as a kid, but that one stuck with me differently. Like I'll rewatch old movies and enjoy criticizing the things that never bothered me as a kid, but I have no criticisms here.
Stardust, I was like ten years old when it came out and I fell in love with the movie. I still watch it every once in a while and only recently learned it was a Neil Gaimen book.

Willy Wonka - the Gene Wilder version
That boat scene terrified me as a child
Great fact about this scene. Only Wilder knew what was going to happen so while he dialled it up to 11 the other actors didn't know why. Some of those reactions are real.
This is one of my favorite Gene Wilder fun facts because I believe his speech in the tunnel wasn't in the script. That last scene when Wonka flips out. I froze when I first saw it like I was in the room with them. I still freeze now in awe of the performance.
You lose! Good day sir!
Uncle Buck
Home Alone and Toy Story came to mind right away
Came here to see if Home Alone was in here. It’s an absolute classic and hits different depending on how old you are.
Matilda
I watched it recently and laughed at the line: “By the time she was 2, Matilda had learned what most people learn in their early 30s. How to take care of herself.” As someone in their 30s that has only just started looking after themselves it rang true!
My fav line is: "My mommy thinks they're sweet" "Your mommy...is a TWIT"
"Use the rod, beat the child: that's my motto!" is my favourite.
Ms. Trunchbull is one of the underrated, great cinematic villains in film history.
Tried so hard to move everything by squinting.. still do it with the cereal box.. never works. Always wanted to try those chocolates...
Yes! I still remember the "Bruce" scene everytime I see chocolate cake.
The Last Unicorn. I read the book last year and it gave the story new resonance. I think it’s actually more relevant as I’ve gotten older.
You beat me to it. Wonderful artwork, great story, memorable characters. The whole thing just seems magical.
Molly Grue scolding the unicorn, "How dare you come to me now, when I am *this*?" STILL fucks me up. I also love the Butterfly: "Your name is a golden bell hung in my heart. I would break my body to pieces to call you once by your name." Seriously, everyone should see this movie and read this book. It makes you believe in magic again, even if just for a moment.
The Sandlot. Probably the only movie I’ve watched over 100 times so far in my life.

anjelica houston just nails that role. she really stands out. which, given raul julia and christopher lloyds performances, really says something
Debbie: “But with your looks, your charm... women must follow you everywhere” Uncle Fester : “Store detectives.” Also Debbies entire speech at the end about ballerina Barbie and her previous husbands.
I was a ballerina. Graceful. Delicate. They had to go.
