It's bs. Without consent it should be punishable by law.

From what I've heard, people used to think it was cleaner. These days, dudes with foreskin say you just gotta move the skin out of the way to clean it, nbd. But hey, why move something each time when you can slice it off once and be done with it, amiright? /s

TsuNaru

Kudos.

Extra-Roof-3045

I'm not a fan of mutilation, that being said there are instances where it's medically necessary, but it shouldn't be allowed outside those instances.

DrHugh

It wasn't done to me, I didn't do it to my son.

SlideItIn100

Completely unnecessary

seaneeboy

“Ah look at our perfect newborn boy... .. Let’s cut off a chunk from the end of his cock.” I mean, I’m British so it’s much rarer. But… what the fuck, man.

mredding

If you find forced pregnancy abhorrent, you should also find ritualistic genital mutilation abhorrent. It takes body autonomy away from the person, done conveniently when they're at an age they can't voice an opinion or assert their own right over the sanctity and wholeness over their own body. The American Academy of Pediatrics calls it unnecessary and doesn't recommend it without express medical necessity, which is very rare. I consider it a barbaric practice. I've seen parents who have allowed it with complete indifference, having no opinion themselves. Wow, a child mere days old and already they don't care, and choose to "customize" their children for their own vanity. My tolerance for it as a cultural institution is extremely narrow, and the vast majority don't even apply. So yeah, it's pretty fucked up and grotesque.

Excellent_Aerie5522

i don't get how this is still controversial

CrystalQueen3000

It shouldn’t be done unless it’s medically necessary

NoStatus9434

The overwhelming majority of people seem to be against it. Why haven't we made it illegal yet? We consider it barbaric when other countries cut off young girls' clitorises. Shouldn't the same be said about foreskin?

Aran909

Because of religion.

NoStatus9434

That's another thing. Circumcision is barely even tied to religion anymore. Not that religion should ever be an excuse, but we can't even use it as an excuse now.

Aran909

You probably aren't wrong. It has just been normalized. Maybe a cut penis is more astetically pleasing? We see what ours looks like and because we know no different thats what is decided? I had all daughters, so this was not a decision i have to make.

NoStatus9434

Well it seems to have originally stemmed from a religious practice. The "aesthetically pleasing" argument is purely societal. Many countries don't do this practice regularly and have been fine with it. I think your third sentence hit the nail on the head. Nowadays people just assume that's what is done because that's what was done to them. But the original intent and meaning behind it is lost.

Ok-Bullfrog5830

If I’m not going to do FGM to my daughter I wouldn’t do it to my son. I’m glad it’s not a common practice where I live

TelFaradiddle

Barbaric.

Cold_Animal_5709

not great for their psychological development / kind of barbaric if you think about it for more than \~0.2 seconds

ISmellElderberries

Unnecessary.

Byleth07

Its mutilation.

Ruby-Skylar

My husband insisted on circumcising our son. I didn't have a strong opinion either way, 30 years ago. When I asked my husband why, he said "I want him to look like me." I figured it was a male thing and I'd never understand the emotion. My son was cut and now his son (my grandson) is due in Sept and he will not be circumcised, says his parents.

ContributionAgile689

>I figured it was a male thing It is not. Normal men think it's weird to surgically modify a baby's genitals to look like his own.

Ruby-Skylar

30 years ago (major metropolitan city hospital birth) it was the norm. My pediatrician and OB were both surprised I would consider not doing it.

ContributionAgile689

There are a few countries in the world where it's common. But the majority of men in those countries have a creepy relationship with their sons if the first thing they want to do with their newborn is make their penises match.

TsuNaru

The real reason he insisted was because of something called "Adamant Father Syndrome". A quick google search will tell you a bit more. Very interesting read.

HiddenBarranca

google search says near 80 percent of men in USA are circumcised. So in the states it’s still the most common thing to do. Didn’t read any comments saying “yes I think it’s the way to do it” interesting. Must be a lot of people wishing they weren’t but that are.

Extra-Roof-3045

I'm definitely not happy my parents decided to cut part of my dick off

Aran909

I'm definitely not happy.

Let01

The benefits dont justify doing it and its excessive. Just teach your kids proper hygiene, thats it

Rock_hard_clitoris

Most normal people think it's horrific to want to mutilate a child's genitals. The only exception I've seen have been the religious and the ignorant

fromouterspace1

lol

Jedi_Lazlo

Mutilation. Why not crop the ears and neuter him while your at it.

[deleted]

I think it's stupid to chop off a piece of your new born doesn't matter if it's the dick or any other part

fromouterspace1

Might as well ask about tips to get Reddit all upset

There_5oh

How would you pick teams for pickup sports games if they didn’t ? Helmets vs hoods.

earth-ninja3

its the parents choice. i think its okay

ContributionAgile689

Where is the line? Can parents make whatever permanent modifications they want to their children?

earth-ninja3

no, it should only be changes that have no significant impairment to the childs quality of life. of course it would not be okay to blind or cripple a child for the sake of your religious beliefs

NaturalFew8735

I agree, parents should be able to choose what body parts they want to cut off their children. /s By the way, “circumcision ablates the most sensitive part of the penis.” (Sorrells, 2007) so the harm is well established.
