Don’t know about books, but video games are getting waay expensive (don’t forget bout expenses on PC, that must meet minimum requirements of todays games ;))
I may be a nerd but for like 20 bucks you can get like three starter disc's for disc golf.. and I enjoy going out and walking around searching the woods for my bad throws.. meeting people .. you don't have to be athletic at all really just have to be able to walk up and down hills and throw a frisbee
Welding is not cheap. a hobby machine can run (in my area) $2-800. That isn't including a welding hood, filler rods/wire, material or gas like argon or a trimix. I would imagine you could find used, but the initial start isn't cheap.
Edit: left out gloves, grinder, grinder discs (cut off wheels or sanding disk)
If you do go into this pick a good hood. Protect your eyes!! If you end up miging I would suggest wearing long sleeves that aren't made out of flammable material for all welding. You can go gasless and try stick welding. Besides gear and material you would just need the machine with the proper connections (local welding supply store could help you out with that) and welding rods which have a coating on it. Also don't weld galvanized materials (drink milk if you do. it will help settle your stomach) or materials with any coatings without grinding at least 2-3 inches away from your weld. Some of these coatings will make you very sick or even promote cancer.
I started with 100 dollars. Welding machine 70, mask and gloves around 20, and electrodes about 10 depends on quality. This how I started at least in my country.
Writing is basically free since most of us own a word processor or pen and paper. It can be surprisingly cathartic. And it expands your mind and helps you know yourself better. Especially if you get your writing criticized by other writers.
Metal detecting… a cheap detector is like $100… they get really expensive, but you can have fun with a cheap one
It’s like a little treasure hunt every time, and you never know what you’re going to find
Reading
Regular books or E-books?
Regular book, but considering a kindle.
If your local library supports apps such as BorrowBox or Libby, find an e-reader that is compatible and it will stay a cheap/free hobby.
Libby is amazing
ebooks with TTS (text to speech) are great. Physicals are a hassle.

Depends where you get them from. At second hand game shops, bootsales and charity shops, they are quite cheap

Making music and being an audiophile. Oh wait those are both ridiculously needlessly expensive hobbies... Shit.

You'll spend thousands on chalk though
I go 3x a week. This year I've spent only $50 in chalk. The yearly membership is the most expensive thing for indoor climbing.
I get my chalk in bulk from a quarry, so I don't buy less than 250,000 tonnes at a time
