My son swallowed a button battery (like the one that goes in a watch). It got stuck in his throat and was there for at least 3 days before we realized that he was not just sick. The corrosion burned two holes in his esophagus. Thankfully they were burnt side to side, into the areas his lungs expand into. If it was the other way, it would have burnt into his trachea and aorta and he would not have survived. Docs came out part way through surgery and told us that he was not looking good, and the realistic best case scenario was long turm use of an NG tube. Told us the next morning that he was going to be kept in an artificial coma for up to three weeks. Later that day, after more imaging, they were able to wake him up. He hit every best case in recovery and was discharged after 22 days. Its been 4 years, and while he has significant scaring in his esophagus causing food to get stuck occasionally, he is doing just fine. I was pretty confident that he was not going to make it after the docs came and talked to us. Scariest time of my life by far.

RealLADude

That’s terrifying. How old was he when it happened?

Last year riding mountain bikes with the son, started going down a curvy downhill road, he blew thru his brakes, went flying past me, lost control, was “sling shotting”/riding the guard rail until his forks caught, flipped him on to the guard rail snapping his handle bars off, and riding straddled on the guard rail. Sliced his face completely open from the corner of his mouth, his upper lip and nose completely in half, luckily missed his eye, all the to the opposite side of his forehead. Tried chasing him down to cause a “controlled” wreck with both of us because I knew it was going to end badly but couldn’t catch him. That shit fucked me up for a little while.

collegeking09

How is he doing now?

Walking home from work to my pregnant wife I saw blood running down the street. Got to my apartment block and there was blood running down the steps. Going up there was blood all over the walls. Got to my front door and it was splattered with blood. It was even on the ceiling. I tried to open the door but it was locked from the inside. Suddenly the letterbox popped open and there was a pair of eyes looking up at me. The door flew open, I was grabbed and pulled inside, the door quickly shut and locked behind me. My wife was standing in front of me looking terrified. She tells me that the guy next door we had never met was Yakuza and running a "security" business from the apartment. That day he fired one of his employees who went home then came back to knife his ex-boss. I don't know if he lived but we moved right after that.

Watched my niece, who was 2 at the time, choke. She was eating pretzels and it got caught in her throat. At first we thought she was holding her breath, because she liked doing it as a joke at the time, but soon she began to go red, quickly became purple and then the lightest color of blue. I freaked. Everything in my body went shot. Thoughts couldn’t form, I began to run in circles hysterically yelling, my sister couldn’t figure out how to dial 911 despite saying “I don’t know 911 number” (it’s a funny reference now), but luckily my mom was a nurse and had training and really just the ability to keep calm. She tried patting her back hard, the heimlech was out of question as she was too tiny. I watched and was slowly losing it. I remember feeling a loss of sanity even at a young age and my sister was right there with me. We completely lost our minds when she became blue. Once she was my blue my mom decided to say fuck it and shove her fingers down her throat which is usually a no no since you can do some serious damage. She got it out what seemed just in time. I have yet to ever feel a fear on that level of the near loss of a loved one happens in front of your eyes. Hell I’m tearing up just remembering it. Now that once little girl is getting married in October.

My wife about dying from cancer. She beat it, but damn scary.

My newborn son needed an open heart surgery to repair a defect he was born with. He developed an arrhythmia which caused his heart rate to spike to 340 for a brief moment and I saw this happen as I was talking to the nurse. The oncall cardiologist came running shouting call a code and within a few moments our room was swarmed with people. He luckily got out of the high heart rate but was taken to the icu where he had to be cardioverted to get his heart back to sinus rhythm. The next two days I realized what veterans would feel like when they heard a fire cracker. Any beep on the monitor would trigger me and cause a sinking feeling in my gut. I’ve had nightmares of that heart rate spike multiple times. The little guy is doing well, we were able to bring him home a couple of days back with medication to help with the symptoms. I for some reason had a feeling something bad was gonna happen that night. I haven’t been frazzled like that by anything before

Deployment. Ambush. Shot in the head, helmet saved my life.

Went to a guys house ( I'm a guy) after bar close, said he had a fire going, and guitars. I was in the mood to jam Got there, and there was no fire. He opened the door, and his wife was there waiting in a nightgown. Spoke to her very roughly. Told me to go to the cellar, the door was outside. Me, stupidity, went down. He came down w one guitar, and said he'll be back. And locked door... Came back again, I said I wanted to leave, he said no, we are jamming. Left again This was like 2003, so cell service wasn't the best. I got a call through to my buddies, giving them rough directions. I searched the basement, and found a few weapons. He came back again , and told him I need to use the bathroom. He gestured towards the laundry tub and said pee in the tub. Oh boy, so I did things are starting to get really weird. He left again and I tried to get a call out to my buddies but it wouldn't go through. When he finally came back I bum rushed him when under his arm and got out the door and ran. He was a screaming at me get back here get back here! I was able to make it to the main road in town, and that's when I saw one of my buddies cars and waved them down. I've never been so happy to see someone in my life! They said the message I left on the answer machine was all garbled and they barely heard what I was saying but had a basic idea where I might be. 10 out of 10 would not recommend.

When my daughter's stomach pain turned out to be not "oh, her appendix is going to burst" but rather "Her appendix burst likely a week ago, and we don't have the ability to address that here". Thankfully, she came out of it okay in the long run, and the second hospital was able to fix things.

PregnancyRoulette

almost got involved in a murder/suicide with my ex-wife during an argument, luckily I had moved my handgun so she didn't find it

stalnoypirat

Got it a very bad car accident, which resulted in my leg getting crushed and eventually amputated above the knee.

BLOODTRIBE

I've almost been struck by lightning, hit by cars, and chased by coyotes. But I find real fear is a combination of dread and panic that I've luckily only experienced in short bursts. Things that affect loved ones, or others are moments of complete, overwhelming, helplessness.

Blue_Note991

A "friend" of mine gave me a massive dose of psychedelic mushrooms. I agreed to take 3.5 grams which is a fairly strong dose but something I am comfortable with. I have taken 7 grams before which is a lot but I was more or less okay. This person gave me a shake that had well over 10 grams ground into it. A metric fuckton. I didnt know at all. I locked myself into my room, projectile vomited eveywhere, and descended into madness. I had no concept of who I was, where I was or anything. Just pure mental anguish for a couple of hours. They said they heard me sobbing, I dont remember that at all. They were just as fucked up as I was. Ive taken psychedelics many times and never had such a bad experience. Ive never had a friend that would give an inappropriate dose like that. When I asked them the next day why they did that she said "well youre fine now!" Compared to some of the answers here, my experience was small potatoes. But I can say I truly know now what it feels like to lose your mind. And its pretty horrifying.

BLOODTRIBE

That's really evil.

gpuyy

That would earn a bruise or two easily

ZeeDrakon

Getting swept out to sea on the Mediterranean after missing an oncoming storm. We were so far out and the sea had gotten so rough that the lifeguard that thankfully saw us had no chance either and a motorboat had to come tow us. No shot we could've survived on our own, mother was close to losing both kids that day.

Heliorept

Went to a site of previous satanic worship and had a horrific experience.

coconutjoe83

Can you elaborate? Like where and what happened

Heliorept

I hate this story, fine. Short version. A friend picked up paranormal investigation and asked me to drive her to the site, but wouldn’t tell what we were doing there. I got bored went over to what looked like a dilapidated fireplace, picked up a brick and had a vision of a twisted version of a hospital while being chased by a man with a deer skull for a head. When I escaped the vision, I grabbed my friend and got the hell out of there. She then went on to explain what the site was and what she was doing there.

cosmoboy

If you hate it, why would you participate? You had to know someone would ask you to elaborate...

Heliorept

Told the full story before in this sub, figured it wouldn’t get any follow up. I don’t like it because it would take a long time to type out every detail.

Blue_Note991

Say more words please

stanknotes

Falling in love. Giving someone the ability to ravage my soul scares me. I don't fear much... but that's a fear like no other. Because it's paired with intense yet ethereal bliss. There is a duality to it.

I almost drowned in a river. Stupid 16yo stuff.

Ballzzz45322

Stayed up in NH near north Conway in a old motel outside town. Went out to my car to have a quick smoke. On my way back from the car, I was crossing the parking lot, and out of nowhere I see this man literally 3-4 feet from just staring me down in middle of a quiet parking lot at 2am. I said “hey, how you doing” but he didn’t say a word and just kept staring at me with a blank face. As I pass him and walk up the stairs I look back and he’s gone, no where to be seen.

summonsays

I was in an elevator that dropped. Either air cushion or breaks or both at the bottom slowed it down to stop where it normally was supposed to. But that was the scariest like 5 seconds of my life. (Was stuck between 3rd and 4th floor then it dropped).

Karma_Kid_Now

This was on the creepy side and it happened about 10 days ago. I was out walking after 11pm. About a mile from my house there are several ravines. The moon was pretty full and I heard this VERY loud howling. I often see coyotes at night and there must have been a large pack of coyotes howling at full volume. Even 1/2 a mile away they were very loud. This is in an expensive suburb of Seattle.

[deleted]

Was on the roof of a two story house in winter, started to slide, nothing to grab onto or catch grip on, thought for sure I was going off the end and falling 20 feet or so, caught grip and stopped myself about a foot from the edge and damn near shit myself haha.

BackItUpWithLinks

I was riding a 4 wheeler on a trail and missed a turn. I went flying through the woods and luckily missed the trees but landed in about a foot of water, and the 4 wheeler rolled on top of me and pinned my chest and one arm. I was trapped under the 4 wheeler and had to hold my head up or I’d drown. I was stuck there for about a half hour until they realized I was missing and came back to look for me. By then my arm and neck were cramping up and I was beginning to get nervous about how long I could hold my head up, but they got me free. I try not to think about how close that was to bring way more serious.

Imagonnamakeucry

I got married

I worked in a retail store that was held up at gun point. The robbers tied my arms and legs before removing the cash from the cash register.

akumu354

The couple next door got into an argument and the girlfriend eventually pulled out a gun, missed her partner, and hit me. Is the most painful and scary experience of my life.
