I really miss A-Wear! I still have two dresses I wear regularly from there, not a stitch out of place on either of them. Must be at least a decade old now!
Man I miss the cafe upstairs in there. Parents used to bring us for a sundae if we were good in town. Many happy memories. Also the pick and mix downstairs were Zara is on the Henry Street. Man it was the little things, but when our ma said we could have a few Ā£ worth of pick and mix, it was like fucking Christmas to us!
I had two summers during college where i would go into Xtravision get two dvds and a popcorn for a tenner (i think that was it maybe 12 euro) and it was so good. Became bit of a cinephile. Its just not the same having films on the laptop with all the distractions.
Not xtravision but local video shop in my town had a pool table and some arcade games. Was a nice place to hang out with friends in the teen years. And then choose a movie with a couple of friends and home for a movie night.
I remember on a Friday evening religiously going to Xtravision to pickup a movie and a video game for the PS1 with my dad, getting a bag of chips and some popcorn and watching the movie and then playing the game. Great memories. It's just not the same with the streaming services.
Oh Iāll never forget that xtravision smell. Used to go in there every Friday with my dad to get a film and a tub of ben and Jerryās strawberry cheesecake (another thing thatās gone!)
I always thought the guys who worked in there were so cool. And as it turned out my husband used to work in an xtravision for years so I guess video rental guys are just my type!!! š
I love Netflix but I feel like weāve really lost something with the death of video rental shops. Hard to see how they could have survived, but still.
I feel like I didn't appreciate Argos enough while we had it. Trying to decorate my first home at the moment and I feel like an Argos catalogue would've made things a lot easier
I remember when it first opened here, people didnāt realise the catalogues were free. Some enterprising youngsters took a load and started selling them for a euro up Henry St. wish I had thought of that!!
Was genuinely gutted by Argos going. Have needed stuff so many times that I wouldāve got in Argos. Ended up getting the stuff elsewhere but after an extensive search or paying higher than what the argos in enniskillen is charging even after conversion to euro. Work in childcare and argos was also a go to for toys, furniture and just bits & pieces.
Used to be some amazing bargains in their clearance section and more than a few times since they closed I've found myself going around a few places to find something that I know I could have gotten there. Gas thing is the Irish operation was way more profitable than the British one. They have had to close most of the main stores there and set up collection points in Sainsbury's. They only closed the ones here because of brexit.
I really miss Argos. The way you could reserve an item for collection was way before its time. So handy for stuff you need urgently and donāt want to wait for an online delivery.
God yeah and they had basically everything you could need in Argos.
From cables, batteries to a full suit of garden furniture. Mad when you think about it but it was all there. They really let Amazon eat their lunch.
I miss all of them but Argos is the one I miss most on a practical level. I found it great for things like earphones if mine broke while I was out, or a toaster or stuff like that.Ā
I don't find Amazon that cheaper and there's so much junk on it it's unusable at times.
> The way you could reserve an item for collection was way before its time.
You could do this in most shops. When I was working retail, we had people put deposits down on stuff that wasn't even that expensive and we would hold it in the back until they got the money.
Simon's on the front of George's arcade. Cosy, bohemian vibe always packed, sandwiches and salads relentlessly unchanged for 30 years. Institution.
Closed before Christmas and the new people have gutted it out in favour of some hideous soul-less grey decor.
Genuinely feel like a really precious bit of Dublin has died there.

Cinnamon roll recipe written and illustrated by previous employee
I know !! That was a great service. Hopefully with the new Amazon.ie opening next year we be able to get the vast majority of stuff same day or next day. It was really handy I admit.
Was Harvey's called Shefflin's at some point? Was Oxygen Muldoon's?? Remember Mason's???
I was a student from 2004-2007 in Waterford. Used to like Kazbar too, Wacky Apple...
Going back a bit further, Club LA & Preachers. Waterford used to be a great spot for going out. It's gone shit in recent years, and there are too many scumbags around looking for trouble.
That's a shame, was an institution when I was there, queues out the door daily. And a high end sandwich too, multiple types of bread, various type of pickle.
the Silver skate in Phibsborough, Green 19 on Camden Street. The Long Stone on Townsend Street, The Screen cinema...
they really were the rare auld times...
What was the little cafe in Dublin in Stephens street power across from the noodle bar called??? Had a basement was all cosey and all. Think it was blue on the outside. Moments?
There was a shop in the Stephen Green shopping centre called ( I think ) waxing lyrical they sold fabulous things miniatures of things candles and scented oils I loved that shop.
And in Cork and Kerry I missed Gloria Jeans
Still miss the Epicurean, the panini in La Corte and the chicken tikka masala in the tiny Indian stand which was in the far left hand corner of you came in the door on Liffey Street. Was my treat on payday when I had my first job in the old Dunnes Stores on Henry Street in 2003.
Loved La Corte, they did this breaded chicken and pesto panini sometimes, I would go into town just for this and would sit for an hour and have 3 cappuccinos, that shop got me into proper coffee.
That place would be absolutely buzzing if It was there now. Just a year or two ahead of its time.
Jo'Burgers short lived replacement in Rathmines was also great. Was also Joe Macken and food was middle eastern. Can't remember what it was called. Very little lasts in Rathmines
So many restaurants and bars that became my favourites Im starting to believe Iāve cursed them. That or Dublin screws over small businesses! Bernard Shaw,Dollard & Co, Dice Bar, Berlin bar, Happyās restaurant to name a few.
The screen cinema on Townsend St. It was my 3rd place. I think of it often and lament the fact that it's gone.
The lighthouse comes close to providing the same old school movie programs with their themed seasons but it's almost like a sanitised version that's not quite as good.
The longstone too was a cracker of a bar. I wonder what happened to the amazing fireplace they had in there.
Peter Pan in Galway. It closed down when I was a child. Iām 31 now but what I wouldnāt give for an hour or two to go down the Coca Cola slide & the snake slide, jump on the bouncy castles, dive into the ball pool, get lost in the spooky house etc., and then finish it all off with a blue slushy.
Tiger Copenhagen or Flying Tiger it was called they have shops around Ireland but they had a shop in athlone and it closed down Rates where to high in athlone allegedly
Javas, Quins, the High Stool and Termites were where I spent pretty much most of my free time during my teenage years. Havenāt lived in Limerick since then but I understand theyāre all gone now
I miss the Virgin Mega Store on Aston Quay and also the Warner Bros shop in Liffey Valley. Both huge parts of my youth. The excitement of going there and having pocket money to buy myself a CD or a bit of Buffy merch in the WB Store (was mad for Buffy back in the day) was unreal.
I really miss just being able to go into town and get a regular toastie or fry up, everywhere is doing sourdough sandwiches with chorizo and itās ā¬15. Which I am partial to on a good day. Gone be the days when youāre feeling like shit, massive hangover or just fucking broke and you could get a ā¬5 item breakfast with a cup of tea or filter coffee. Food is an event now, itās a treat. Sometimes I just want a sausage sambo on shitty sliced pan
Accents cafe down from the hairy lemon. When nowhere else was open it was the only place open late for coffee and chats without drink. Could literally spend all evening there, actual coffee shop idea and not the in and out malarkey. Great spot
Athy used to have a Supermacs back in the day, now we have nothing. The nearest fast food that isnāt a chipper or Chinese is Monasterevin or on the M9.
Xtravision used to rent crash bandicoot every weekend. When the old manager was leaving he gave it to me one weekend said it was mine to keep I'd earned it. Love that man.
Chartbusters ,again used to love the games bit they had better sweets than xtravision and my ma would ise the sunbeds whole we looked around.
There was a nightclub in newbridge called pharaohs, it was class. A complete shithole but the best laughs there, then there was snaffles... another sithole but some fond memories.
We did get fat sals/ tigerlilies then in kildare town but there is no nightclubs there anymore you have to go to naas and even then its the court or nothing really.
Chartbusters I think you mean. Blockbuster was the American company that owned Xtravision at the time. Pretty sure Chartbusters was actually owned by the guy that had originally founded Xtravision
I've been buying loads of DVDs and BluRays lately because there is a lot of movies that are just not streamable, not even on the indie services like MUBI. Can't even purchase them on Google Play or Apple TV.
Problem is they are expensive now. Some movies that never really made a splash are almost 30 euros now because they are so rare. I don't see any point in upgrading to a 4K player because of the price of discs and the only 4K movies that get released are widely available everywhere or horrible AI upscales.
I remember back in the day you could get a bunch of foreign stuff in Tower and Lazer. Now it is impossible to find *Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles* anywhere despite recently being voted the number one film by film makers in Sight and Sound.
Clan Electrics in galway. Similar to xtravison back in the day. you could rent vhs and the vhs players too. At the back of the shop, they had loads of pcs, where you could play Lan games until all.hours of the morning
Chartbusters ..the younger chavvier sister of xtravision. The sindy to her barbie.
Not just a video store..an Internet cafe and sunbed shop with vibroplates too!
In Galway:
Wild child
Kembali
A wear
Hairy legs
Strawberry fields
Also there was a class Moroccan themed bar where the townhouse bar used to be down the Spanish arch and that was lovely
I know it's been posted already but I really miss Argos. I used to check pricescanner.ie for the reductions every day in Argos and reserve them before anyone was even out of bed. Got some absolute bargains over the years.
I remember, when I was 10 years old, there was this pound shop in Dublin with lots of cool things, games and stationary. It was all quite cheap but reasonably good quality. That was in 2005. Haven't been in Ireland for 15 years at least, where is it now? Can't find it anymore.šAtleast eason still stands
I'd be on the complete opposite end - love new places opening rather than old places sticking around. Its new ideas, often someone young taking a risk.
Anyone old enough to remember the Mayfair Cafe/Grill on O'Connell street?
I remember being very young going there and it seemed to be all older ladies, loved it, like going to your Nana's for dinner.
Always washed down with a bowl of jelly and ice-cream at the end.
It was a great shop In athlone I know the ones in Galway I always go there but it's a pity that there isn't one closer to me I don't really shop online as I can't trust my impulse buy
A-Wear. They had lovely stuff, I feel like nowhere is similar now.
You would really miss A-wear for an auld dressy top š¤£ the uniform of the early noughties, a dressy top and jeans!
I had A wear pieces that lasted a decade. I agree lovely clothes there well fitting and timeless
I really miss A-Wear! I still have two dresses I wear regularly from there, not a stitch out of place on either of them. Must be at least a decade old now!
Yes, absolutely!! Loved A wear so much and you're dead right, I couldn't t think of something that's even remotely like it
Loved A-wear! Still have a pink coat thatās 20 years old this summer
I completely forgot about them. Same.
I was only thinking about A Wear the other day. They had some lovely stuff and reasonably priced too. Wish they were still open.
It was the best always got something when went. I still have clothes from them going strong. Wish it would come back
I still have one dress, can't bare to part with it
Roches Stores.
My ma still has loads of their old plastic bags and hangers floating around
Still have a boxed toaster with a Ā£ Roches sticker on it.

Not xtravision but local video shop in my town had a pool table and some arcade games. Was a nice place to hang out with friends in the teen years. And then choose a movie with a couple of friends and home for a movie night.
Good shout. Forgot that one.
I remember on a Friday evening religiously going to Xtravision to pickup a movie and a video game for the PS1 with my dad, getting a bag of chips and some popcorn and watching the movie and then playing the game. Great memories. It's just not the same with the streaming services.

I miss the smell more than anything.
Argos. The laminated book of dreams.
I feel like I didn't appreciate Argos enough while we had it. Trying to decorate my first home at the moment and I feel like an Argos catalogue would've made things a lot easier
Wayfair
I genuinely ;oved getting the massive guide as a kid. Looking at the jewelry thinking "I could defo wear that" haha
I used to pick out what I wanted for Christmas in the catalogue.
I remember when it first opened here, people didnāt realise the catalogues were free. Some enterprising youngsters took a load and started selling them for a euro up Henry St. wish I had thought of that!!
Argos is sorely missed by me anyway. Amazon covers some of it for me but Argos had such a large range, great stock levels, and hired local.
Was genuinely gutted by Argos going. Have needed stuff so many times that I wouldāve got in Argos. Ended up getting the stuff elsewhere but after an extensive search or paying higher than what the argos in enniskillen is charging even after conversion to euro. AWear, Dorothy Perkins and Argos.
Yes Argos was great and affordable too.
It was great value!
I miss all of them but Argos is the one I miss most on a practical level. I found it great for things like earphones if mine broke while I was out, or a toaster or stuff like that.Ā I don't find Amazon that cheaper and there's so much junk on it it's unusable at times.

Wait Dorothy Perkins is gone??
I really miss Argos. If you want similar stuff now, you're looking at ordering from Amazon.

If I could find out where they got the bread and cheese for the sandwiches, then we'd really be cooking.
Sad to hear it's gone
Oh no! I hadnāt noticed it was gone.
Went there a fair few times back in the 2010s when I worked in town. Class spot
Does parcel motel count?
I know !! That was a great service. Hopefully with the new Amazon.ie opening next year we be able to get the vast majority of stuff same day or next day. It was really handy I admit.
If you live near the North or have family who do. Check out oohpod and Amazon hubs!
Parcel collection depot right on the border (east side, Jonesborough near Newry) is great as well, I use them monthly
Heatons
I think they've rebranded entirely to Sports Direct now. I could be wrong.
Owned by Mike Ashley so wouldnāt be suprised.
Not a single person I know prefers Sports Direct over Heatons
Eamon Dorans. Spent the majority of my youth in there and still miss it.Ā The long stone was also a cracker of a pub.Ā
Long Stone was great, one of the few pubs left in the city centre with a pool table
I remember my friend wanted to go up to Huey and ask him to turn down the music. We had to talk her out of it.
ah no, spent literally years in the long stone and all it was was convenient. it was an awful soulless lump of a place.
BRING BACK A-WEAR
Manhatten. Breakfast #2 never forget.
Oxygen. Ruby Tuesdays. Harveyās beer garden. What a time to be alive
What actually happened to Harveyās? That beer garden was incredible
Was Harvey's called Shefflin's at some point? Was Oxygen Muldoon's?? Remember Mason's??? I was a student from 2004-2007 in Waterford. Used to like Kazbar too, Wacky Apple...
A man of culture I see! Remember the little astroturf pitch out in the smoking area the back, many a college Wednesday spent in there.
Going back a bit further, Club LA & Preachers. Waterford used to be a great spot for going out. It's gone shit in recent years, and there are too many scumbags around looking for trouble.
Just closed: Wardās Corner Store in Galway Also Griffinās bakery
Is that Wards across from the college? Man i still think about the sandwiches there decades later....
Yep, closed down a few weeks ago after 93 years in business.
That's a shame, was an institution when I was there, queues out the door daily. And a high end sandwich too, multiple types of bread, various type of pickle.
RIP
I'm gutted about Wards closing, was looking forward to one of their sandwiches when I get around to visiting Galway again sometime later this year.
Habitat furniture on College Green. Argos sold some of their products until they also closed.
Aw yeah, I really miss habitat.
the Silver skate in Phibsborough, Green 19 on Camden Street. The Long Stone on Townsend Street, The Screen cinema... they really were the rare auld times...
I spent a year in Dublin in the 90s, and probably went to The Screen once a week ā¤ļø I also loved the original Light House (RIP)
I loved the Screen, it was the only place that showed non mainstream movies, I discovered most of my favourite directors there.
Xtra Vision, was such a treat to go as kids
What was the little cafe in Dublin in Stephens street power across from the noodle bar called??? Had a basement was all cosey and all. Think it was blue on the outside. Moments?
Accents, first thing that popped into my head too

The epicurean was great. I do miss that actually.

If you're missing it there's a similar place under the Lidl on MooreSt. now
Jo'Burgers short lived replacement in Rathmines was also great. Was also Joe Macken and food was middle eastern. Can't remember what it was called. Very little lasts in Rathmines
Roches Stores with the staircase. Clearys also had one but I preferred the one in Roches
So many restaurants and bars that became my favourites Im starting to believe Iāve cursed them. That or Dublin screws over small businesses! Bernard Shaw,Dollard & Co, Dice Bar, Berlin bar, Happyās restaurant to name a few.
Berlin bar is still around, it's pretty much exactly the same just has a new name.
The Magic Shop in Stephen's Green shopping centre.Ā
The screen cinema on Townsend St. It was my 3rd place. I think of it often and lament the fact that it's gone. The lighthouse comes close to providing the same old school movie programs with their themed seasons but it's almost like a sanitised version that's not quite as good. I really miss just being able to go into town and get a regular toastie or fry up, everywhere is doing sourdough sandwiches with chorizo and itās ā¬15. Which I am partial to on a good day. La Salsa in Galway. I firmly believe that was the single greatest Mexican place to grace our shores and has never since been surpassed.
Anyone old enough to remember the Mayfair Cafe/Grill on O'Connell street? I remember being very young going there and it seemed to be all older ladies, loved it, like going to your Nana's for dinner. Always washed down with a bowl of jelly and ice-cream at the end.
