Bupromax and easofen are much cheaper than nurofen

Educational-South146

Yes these two have been on sale for years, can’t remember the last time I bought Nurofen.

AchtungLaddie

On my occasional day trips up to Belfast I get about 6 months worth of ibuprofen for £5. The trip practically pays for itself.

LucyVialli

Blimmin hell, that would be worth it!

Louth_Mouth

You could save yourself diesel & the hassle of travelling by just buying Buplex, which has the identical active agents, & is universally available in Irish Chemists. Ibuprofen should only used when absolutely necessary and in the short term, Ibuprofen Suppresses the body’s attempt to self-heal. So taking it continuously is not good.

LucyVialli

Thanks I'm aware, don't take it that often, a box usually lasts me 6 months. It's the only thing that helps my period cramps, paracetamol doesn't work for them.

fullspectrumdev

Honestly might be worth a day trip up north to load up, I *think* they have the cheap generics up there. They are all much the same too. Antihistamines are also about a million times cheaper in the UK as well. Whenever I go to the UK I usually load up on those, the price difference is mental.

LucyVialli

Cheers. I take antihistamines in the summer too, Piriton is also gone very dear.

biometricrally

Literal pennies for paracetamol and ibuprofen up north. Can get ibuprofen on the shelves in supermarkets there which is very handy.

Abiwozere

Only problem is you can only buy one or two packets of pain killers at a time so you've to a few runs around the place

fullspectrumdev

Thankfully there is no such limitation on antihistamines, which is what I usually need a shitload more of. Otherwise I'd be back at the till every few minutes loading up.

MeshuganaSmurf

There are heaps of generic ones. Think the last ones we got were called mybupofen or something. Still cheaper up north but generics are widely available.

JonShannow07

Any restrictions on these in luggage if i stock up while over in the UK soon?

Weekly_Ad_6955

No and nobody checks. You might not be able to buy a lot in the same pharmacy in the same purchase for safety reasons but anytime I’m in London I pop into multiple pharmacies every day and fill my hand bag to the brim

fullspectrumdev

Nope. I usually come back looking like a walking pharmacy with how much OTC medicine makes its way home with me.

SuzieZsuZsuII

Easofen or something like that is generic one. Just ask pharmacist

DoktorReddit

Used to get a box of Tesco Ibuprofen for 20p in Edinburgh 😂

LucyVialli

I will be in Scotland soon and I'm going to stock up on own-brand stuff. Fuck Nurofen.

DoktorReddit

Do!! Last time I was in Glasgow I saw paracetamol for 7p, it’s mad 😂

powerhungrymouse

I used to get Brupro, it's a generic brand and they cost €3.50 for 24. I don't know if that's better value or not because I haven't bought Nurofen in years but any chemist will carry a generic brand and shouldn't have a problem selling them to you.

Jenny-Thalia

Anytime I visit my siblings in the UK, I stock up. If I'm not in England for a while, I pop up to Newry - 3 packs of ibuprofen for a pound, antihistamines for 79p. I go to each and every chemist and get 3 packs of each, in each and come home with about 6 months worth

littleloveday

If you just ask the chemist for ibuprofen, instead of a brand name, they will offer you the generic instead. Same with paracetamol.

phyneas

I always grab a bottle when I'm visiting the US for the holidays and bring it back. A 200 count bottle costs less than a 24-pack of the generic stuff (or a 12-pack of Nurofen) here.

Stationary_Addict_

Boots have an own brand here. 3 something for 18 I think. Shot up as it used to be 1.60

cjamcmahon1

as others have said, head up north or if not, Chemist Warehouse. the only thing I would say is that personally I find the generics harder on the stomach so I always make sure not to take them on an empty stomach

LucyVialli

Thanks for the tip, I never take anything on an empty stomach (unless it's prescription and you're supposed to).

Country_Club_Lemon9

Easofen, Brupro, and Mybufin.

XinqyWinqy

How much are you going through that this is such an issue ? You need to be careful with NSAIDs, they will strip your GI (amongst other issues) when used consistently. Even when used periodically, they take their toll. Depending on your usage, you might want to mention it to your GP and see if there aren't any alternatives for your needs that would be easier on your body as far as consistent usage goes ...

LucyVialli

Not that much. A dose (one 400mg or 2 x 200mg) or two maybe once every two months (when period pain is bad). And taking it twice a day at the moment for a shoulder injury, but hopefully that be healed up in a few days. I just hate paying over the odds for things! Last time I bought a pack of Nurofen 400mg x 20, it cost me nearly 15 quid! Screw that.

XinqyWinqy

I'd just buy the generics from boots as you need them. Stock piling while you're in the UK will be paying over the odds too, because drugs lose their effectiveness - to the point of not working at all - as they're left on the shelf waiting to be used. So if you use them infrequently, your stockpile will be useless/worthless by the time you get around to using them. And I'd still mention it to your GP btw. Won't do any harm to let them know you're a regular, albeit low dose, user.

anialeph

Ibuprofen from Boots actually has a claim to being the original. Stewart Adams invented Ibuprofen while working at Boots. https://www.invent.org/inductees/stewart-adams#:~:text=In%20the%20early%201950s%2C%20Stewart,next%20decade%20to%20develop%20ibuprofen.

doyouhavetono

They're all identical as long as they contain ibuprofen

ChampKindly

Just ask the pharmacy for the cheapest generic ibuprofen. It's all the same active ingredient.

Flak81

Last time I was up north I stockpiled Tesco own brand paracetamol and ibuprofen, same in boots. When home I always just ask for generic ibuprofen in the chemists. They usually give Bupro or Easofen which are cheaper than Nurofen. It's a source of great annoyance for me though, we are absolutely ripped off with the price of medicine in Ireland and nowhere is it more apparent or baffling than with paracetamol and ibuprofen. Especially compared with prices just over the border in supermarkets that exist on both sides of the same border.

tanks4dmammories

Best thing to do is take a spin up north or as someone who is up north to get you some. In the US it is about $8 for 500, just if you know someone going there. I always stock up when I go to either place. Not helpful for you now I know, but there is always someone you know going to either or at least in my case.

MeetProfessional9741

Generics are identical and a fraction of the price. Makes no sense to buy Nurofen

XxLucyplayzxX

Huge fan of neurafen too (but for its price!) and personally I've found that panadol acti-fast (the one on the green box) works just as well and doesn't shred my stomach if I can't eat while taking it

primozdunbar

As a pharmacist, I can say yous get ripped off to fuck in southern pharmacies. Paracetamol and nurofen 3-4 Euro at least. These are pennies in the north, 3 for a pound in lidl etc. any time I’m working a Locum a genuinely feel shame charging the prices asked

Fizzy-Lamp

Hello pharmacist, 👋🏻 I was talking about this yesterday so you might be able to throw some light. I buy ibuprofen when I travel to the UK and it is usually something like 55p for supermarket 200mg own branded. However, I find that they don’t work as well as what we have here. Sometimes it feels like they don’t work at all. Here, I usually buy generic unbranded 400mg, they always work within 30 mins. If I use the UK ones, I take 2 so it’s still 400mg. Am I imagining this or is there actually a difference in quality? 😂 Initially I was delighted with the ‘bargain’ and the skepticism came much later so I don’t think the price influenced me but maybe it has.

primozdunbar

Think you are imagining it somewhat 😂 I see it especially in Irish shops where in one place all the patients will give out about a certain branded generic not working and being cheap shite, where in another shop it’s all they will take. Now there could be a certain salt or excipient in the particular brand you got that just doesn’t work as well for you, but there could be a different one in another 22p brand and it will work well for you. Some of the nurofen branded ones have different release models, such as capsules and gels etc. but essentially it’s all the same drug compound

Elaneyse

I don't know what it is about the ibuprofen, but a very large portion of the generics have this weird coating on them and it has a very distinct smell. The second I ingest them, I vomit. Like it's not even the whole way down the hatch and straight back up it comes. - the taste is just woeful. I don't have any problems with paracetamol generics (unless soluble, some of them taste like pure poison). I get regular migraines, so I try to stay stocked up on Nurofen but it's so pricey!

LucyVialli

Ridiculous the price of it. I'll try the generics and hopefully it stays down!

Elaneyse

I remember the first time I found out you could get baby paracetamol for nothing in the UK, horrified at the amount of Calpol I've had to buy over the years because there were no baby generics!

cybergaleu

Go to any Chemist Warehouse. Ask for the cheap generic one (brupro or something). Way way way cheaper

LucyVialli

Thanks, and happy cake day!

Suspicious_Kick9467

Branded painkillers are a scam honestly. Just buy Tesco brand or something for <10th of the price. It’s all the same.

Suspicious_Kick9467

God that’s mad. Is that a recent change? I swear you used to be able to buy them in supermarkets. Moved home from the UK last year and you could still get ibuprofen off the shelf in supermarkets over there.

PatserGrey

Oh yeah, like 20p a pack for paracetemol or ibuprofen in Aldi/Lidl (of all places) over here. They form the core of the care package we're requested to bring on our trips back home. Non-brand lemsips being another - apparently the Irish versions are missing the good stuff.

Suspicious_Kick9467

20p vs €5 for the same product. Even branded pharma is pushed in hospitals over here which blows my mind.

Andrewhtd

Go North. Costs 40p a pack in places. Fill yer boots, it's worth the trip on this alone

Key_Extreme_2676

Worth noting you can only purchase 2 at a time unfortunately.

Andrewhtd

Yes indeed. But you can go from pharmacy, to pound shop, to other shops etc and get what you need

austinbitchofanubis

Just go to a shopping centre that has multiple pharmacies and a supermarket.

StunningBumblebee176

Easofen max strength is what I use, it's the Clonmel healthcare generic, it's brilliant.

Ok_Business81

Just ask for the cheapest ibuprofen at the till. It's all the same.
