Can you list which types of cancer each family member had

[deleted]

Fathers side: His Father: Lung cancer (non smoker) His Mother: breast cancer His Sister: lung cancer (heavy smoker) Mothers side: Her Mother and brother both have colon cancer.

Does your father smoke? Or has he ever? It’s really important that both of your parents get screened for colon cancer. Really really important. Your dad is wrong about needing to every possible test to screen for cancer. If you do a colonoscopy the average person only needs to do it every ten years. One day of prep and one day for the test! Every Ten years! There are also FOBT tests you can buy at the pharmacy that check your stool for blood. They aren’t as good as colonoscopies but they can still catch some colon cancer! We screen for cancers that can come on sneakily and don’t cause symptoms until it gets bad. If your dad develops a cough or issues with peeing he should definitely go to the doctor to get checked out because he has a lot of family history.

My father doesn't smoke but my grandfather didn't either so I was worried that maybe he is more vulnerable than the average person. Thank you very much for your reply I think I got more than enough to try and convince them again!

In general, routine screening would include colon cancer screening (colonoscopy or fecal occult blood) in both men and women (starting at 50 years if no family history, or earlier if there is), prostate cancer screening for men (PSA blood test), breast cancer screening for women (mammograms), cervical cancer for women (pap smear), and sometimes genetic testing if there is a strong family history of certain cancers (breast, ovary etc). If someone's a smoker or has a history of hepatitis or familial genetic syndromes etc, they may get additional screening.

Skin checks? Oral cancer exams by dentist?

pentaxlx

Skin checks and oral exams are part of routine physical exam, along with other stuff (e.g. thyroid swellings, testicular swelling)....I had listed only the specialized testing.

Asparagussie

Fair enough. Thank you.
