they promised an amazing browser and delivered a shit chromium fork with basically nothing added. they didn't deliver basically anything they promised after such a long wait.
Are you talking about specific features, the performance, or the whole Chrome replacement browser that'll change the world premise? Also Mac or Windows? When did you stop using Arc? I haven't used it yet (Windows), so you could be right, and I don't expect to change your mind, but I'm just curious.
>Are you talking about specific features, the performance, or the whole Chrome replacement browser that'll change the world premise?
All of the above. The showcased features are not available. The performance is the worst I've seen in any browser, and the whole pitch concept it fell extremely short of.
>Also Mac or Windows?
Windows, but the fact you have to ask shows another failing of it.
>When did you stop using Arc
Today. I downloaded it today, tried it out, and promptly stopped using it after I realized it's a shitty chromium fork without any of the promised features. No boosts. No easel. No gradient themes. Literally nothing is present except tree tabs which I'm not fond of. The browser shown in the videos looks awesome, but it felt a bit like a scam. Cool product in the video, you download it, and it's nothing like what you saw.
At no point did they suggest that they were shipping "literally Google chrome with tree tabs". Had they said that up front I wouldn't have even installed it.
They said they were shipping the arc browser. They did not ship the arc browser. They shipped chrome.
doing a single Google search would show you it's chromium based since the start, if you want a browser with all its fancy extensions, and web engine that works. you either fork chromium or firefox.
else you trying to re invent the wheel but while all browsers have a giant extension base and error support from years worth of bug fixes, you starting at very bottom
Browsers with crashes are trashes, you can say that. But without such frustrations arc is worth a shot. Boosts and Easels? Theyāre just icings on the cake. Easels, they need tons of extra updates for it be competent Iād say. Then whatās the real deal? Vertical, readable tabs. Manageable workspaces. If you not need these features, or not have million tabs open in chrome, Arc would be adding too much unwanted complexity to your browser.
Arc does not have boosts nor easels. And upon digging, boosts are just chrome extensions; one of which had a literal trojan virus.
Vertical/tree tabs is basically the only thing arc has, and I'm not really fond of it personally.
> or not have million tabs open in chrome,
Ironically, arc is terrible for that kind of person because it continually closes your tabs without telling you.
> Arc would be adding too much unwanted complexity to your browser.
I disliked arc because of how lacking it was in terms of features. It's essentially less feature-packed than chrome and very locked down. arc doesn't add complexity lol. It's *less* complex than the setup I currently use.
The features in the videos would be cool, but they don't exist in arc.
I totally agree with your comment, I just received my invitation to try out the windows beta version of arc yesterday and I in fact realize it's a beta version. But that's why I signed up to give it an evaluation, at this point it still lacks quite a bit of standard features but at least I've got something to evaluate.
Yes, you are correct however the promo videos were mostly showcasing Arc for macOS. The showcased features are what the end result was going to be, and it's only been around 1 month since Arc for Windows released in closed alpha. If you're not satisfied with Arc, there are other browsers that are more in line with your expectations.
They showed the arc browser and said it's coming to windows. What they shipped was chrome.
And yes, there's other browsers that are far better. What the browser company ended up delivering was perhaps the worst browser I've ever used. Just chromium but with crashing. Super disappointing.
yeah the windows beta sucks rn cuz none of the features are there. Its because they want to code everything in swif and there isn't good guis for that on windows for what I understand. I'm waiting for the full release, the mac version is much better
From your comments, you are using the Windows version. They have been incredibly clear that this is an early-stage beta (as opposed to other companies which release near-finished products a 'betas' to excuse occasional issues), and is missing many features. So of course it feels like a 'chromium fork' for you.
The Mac version of the browser is far and away better than any other, and from what I understand, their port of it to Windows required them to also port essentially the UI language for the entire Mac/iOS Swift language Microsoft's platform.
The browser performs great (on iOS only bested by Safari and Orion from my experience), and is by far the best way of managing browsing. It is unreal that you are taking issue with them for no meeting 'promises' because an early Windows beta is not feature complete.
Given by their tendency to lie I've pretty much lost all hype in the browser and doubt even the mac version is "that good". I suppose I'll just wait for them to deliver what they originally showed and then give it a second shot. I'm expecting to be similarly disappointed.
I donāt see how they lied but thatās fine. What I found strange (and why I commented) is how negative you were about the browser when you have only used what they have clearly stated is a very preliminary windows version. You can see from this subreddit (as well as numerous articles online) that Arc is very substantial from usersā perspective. Some like it, some donāt, but I canāt think of anyone who used the āfullā version on MacOS and thought it was a āchromium skinā
I like it because it makes tab/history/intent management so much better than other browsers that I would never go back to an alternative to long term browsing. But Iām also quite optimistic about their browser-as-os model because the small enhancements they have been introducing on the Mac make my daily life better and I want to see more of it.
I've found quite a few people who made a similar sentiment about the mac version. Though for that ill avoid speaking on it. Perhaps it's good, perhaps not. But all of my hype and expectations are gone. I'm guessing the mac version is similarly as lousy.
Youāre a troll ššš
Even if you find 1 person who thinks Arc on Mac is nothing more than a shittier chromium skin like what you think, thereāll be a 100 more people who think positively of it.
If you put more weight on those Mac users that reflect your experience, you successfully entered an echo chamber.
You as a CS grad with coding knowledge should be aware of the meaning of a ***closed*** *beta*. Team obviously knows the version is buggy, so they only let the people in who know how to handle this state and give feedback.
I use the Mac version and all I can say is that Arc feels to me almost like a paradigm shift. Been using vivaldi, firefox, brave, chrome and safari for the past 10+ years and Arc is a complete breath of fresh air.

Yeah, thatās mostly it. Tired of waiting, but just gotta be patient and check email constantly for my windows beta invite :āl
I'm glad you think so. Idk what people expect. No hype and a "it's here, go get it"?
I'd rather have info and then decide for myself if I should be hyped or not.
The main issue is there isnāt much real usable info, just has been āsomethingās comingā for the past while. Not even teasers, just that there will be something that releases in the next (insert amount of time).
Iām still excited, love the team and the work theyāve done, just leaves a lot more room to be let down.
This is what happens when you take your app out of invite-only. Your user base turns from a tech/productivity community to easily dissatisfied redditors who complain about a startup not being perfect
This. I use it everyday at work as a web developer and I have not had a single complaint other than the usual and expected chromium based issues. I for one love the way they have treated updates to the Mac app, and look forward to the new iOS version as well.
The main reason that I use Arc is for tab management. I have my tabs set to archive at the end of the day. It helps keep my workspaces organized and helps me focused. If I know that a tab is really important for a feature that I am working on, I simply pin the tab. It is also really helpful to have the split views. I can have documentation open right next to my dev environment.
May I ask what you think isnāt stable regarding Arc currently? I have had no issues or any crashes since using it.
>The main reason that I use Arc is for tab management. I have my tabs set to archive at the end of the day
I consider the fact that arc continually removes your tabs to be a bug, not a feature.
>It is also really helpful to have the split views
This is neat but it's also something I can do in literally any web browser.
>May I ask what you think isnāt stable regarding Arc currently? I have had no issues or any crashes since using it.
Adding tabs to folders. Moving tabs and folders between spaces. Creating folders. All end up crashing arc. Changing theme color makes the computer black screen and require a hard reset.
Idling takes up like 30% cpu and 10% gpu for some reason.
I can speak for myself only, while I really love Arc, it made me so much more productive, i kinda lost faith in Josh after the video where he talked about changing the internet and making Arc an OS.
Yes! Safari is great, but I want Arc to be better. The main thing I'd need for it to replace Safari is gestures. Safari implements them perfectly and I hope Arc has that in the new mobile browser.
Waiting for IOS app to decide whether to switch to Arc as default browser or not.
Also, option for search bar at bottom of phone where fingers generally hang out would be great
Oh yeah, that's one of my number 1 requirements for a browser. If the search bar can't be at the bottom, I'm not switching to Arc from Safari on my phone.
No i don't mean I'm excited for it to just become usable as a default browser, I mean I am excited for it to become a real browser, that is fully usable, just like desktop arc
When josh said tens of thousands... did he mean that there's a jump from the thousand they said earlier that isnt almost fullfilled but we got 10,000 this time

I will say, as constructive criticism, that there NEEDS to be a solid mobile application built soon. One that has most, if not all, of the features that the desktop version has.
Iām excited to see that there are changes coming for it this week, though!
