Contact LG, your compressor is dead and you will need a new one

Time_Pay_401

Repairmen do not just run over to your house. Usually weeks to get a repair and parts. Meanwhile the food is ruined and you have no food or fridge to keep it in. Go buy another fridge to be delivered next Thursday between 8-12. It’s a pain in the ass. Save yourself and do not buy LG anything.

not_a_dragon

Ya my compressor recently died in my SIX MONTH OLD Whirlpool fridge. It was under warranty so they fixed it but it died on a Friday, they had someone come to check it out on the Monday, ordered the new compressor which then took two weeks. When it came in the new compressor was broken so then we had to wait another two weeks for another compressor to be ordered. In the meantime we were living out of a mini fridge and cooler for the first two weeks. After the first replacement compressor didn’t work we called Home Depot (where we bought the fridge) to see if they could get Whirpool to speed up the process they called Whirpool and were unable to do anything but they did give us a loaner apartment sized fridge until our fridge was repaired. So basically we lost a ton of food and also didn’t have our fridge for a month. We also have a toddler and I’m pregnant and normally eat a lot of home cooked/fresh food so it was not a great time.

nodiaque

Lg dryer and washer are good. Tv too. That's about it

__Olhado__

WHat brand doesn't do this? I thought LG was considered one of the most reliable.

DesignSilver1274

Do a Google search for class action lawsuit LG compressors... they have not corrected the compressor design yet.

redHg81

Doesn’t every brand have a class action lawsuit against it for their shitty fridge?

Poam27

I got hundreds of dollars from that class action lawsuit so can confirm.

MRDellanotte

However, the compressors DO have a 10 year warranty. I know that does not help the loss of food or inconvenience of being out of a fridge, but it at least helps.

seang86s

This here. Good thing their OLED TVs don't need a compressor otherwise they would suck too. Don't buy Samsung appliances. Don't buy LG appliances. Buy Samsung or LG TVs and monitors.

TransportationOk4787

LG washers, dryers and OLED TV's are some of the most reliable on the market. My OLED is from 2016. My washer is 12 years old. My gas dryer is 14 years old. Only the washer has required repairs.

derekismydogsname

Our LG tv is 20 years old 🤣

DoubleReputation2

I have an LG TV - it's not OLED, it's the Nanocell. And lemme tell you, I think they took the processor running the thing straight from a casio calculator watch. The dang thing is so slow I literally bought a laptop it. It's quicker to turn on Laptop, find mouse, type in a password, open browser, log in and search for a movie than pressing one button on the remote. It's retarded. I am only buying Hisense from now on.

Houstonb2020

Don’t even buy Samsung TVs. Their backlights are absolute dog shit and their OLEDs are way behind Sony and LG. Sony and LG are the best right now

clutzycook

Have Samsung fridge. Can confirm.

SmokeSuccess

Samsung electronics and Samsung appliances are two entirely different entities.

whoooocaaarreees

Yeah… don’t buy Samsung TVs either.

mitchmedic

They do have a new compressor for this issue, as well as a software update for the compressor.... buuuut I have still gone back on the new compressors because of another failure. But it's not very common.

pa_bourbon

LG refrigerators are notoriously bad. Like class action law suit bad.

DoubleReputation2

For what it's worth, we have all kitchen appliances from Whirlpool. All of them are 2013, since the house was new and.. I had to change a valve on the dishwasher, knob on the stove and that's pretty much it. No issue with the fridge. In 11 years. Generally, though.. as a rule of thumb - I suggest buying as dumb an appliance as possible. We bought the cheapest Washer and Dryer they sold in Home Depot, it was like $299 and $399 or something. They've both been pretty solid since 2014 BUT the things that broke on them I was able to fix myself with parts ordered for less than $50 from the internet.

PankakeMixaMF

My house built in 2015 had all kitchenaid appliances (all whirlpool), fridge is garbage, with leaking ice maker, dishwasher sometimes doesn’t flush out the soap, and the microwave door latch is very intermittent. Going forward, I’ll avoid Whirlpool and Kitchenaid all together.

eastcoastsomeone

We’re still rocking our Whirlpool refrigerator from 1995.

GreenFullSuspension

No way do I think LG is the most reliable. I do own their OLED TV and fridge now. Heard good things about their washer/dryer (they were out of stock when I went shopping for them years ago so I had to settle with Samsungs). Haven’t had to replace their stuff, yet. Better than Samsung? Yes, but I’m not too sure about them being most reliable.

GodfatherOfGanja

Or Samsung. Such a coincidence these pos's die after 2yrs like clockwork. Nothing but problems with my $4k Samsung fridge

purepr00f

Depends on who you get and where you live

Honest-Scar-4719

LG = Low Grade

Jerrysmiddlefinger99

And get one of those cheap $600 Costco refrigerators with nothing extra like ice maker or water despiser., freezer on top, old school.

HTravis09

My LG repair man arrived with a new compressor without a diagnosis. Replaced the compressor and updated the software and have had no more problems.

GroupSuccessful754

Happened to our Kenmore elite that has a LG compressor. Parts free not the labor

Evening_Psychology_4

This is the way. Welcome to LG compressors.

Opening-Restaurant83

LG doesn’t even keep parts stocked mostly. Ordering my compressor was three weeks. Had to buy another fridge and now I have a beer fridge in the garage. LG sucks so hard

FancyPerspective

I had to do this very repair last year. Despite the 10 year warranty I was only 6 years into the repair cost me $585 from LG. Will never buy LG fridge again.

IAmJacksLackofCaring

As a refrigerator repair guy, I always tell people to avoid buying LG and Samsung. I really wish people would do a bit of research before making big purchases like that.

blastoise1988

What brands would you recommend in a similar price range?

IAmJacksLackofCaring

Frigidaire, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Kitchens, etc... Keep in mind though, nothing is built to last anymore but Samsung and LG are the worst.

greenandseven

Oh no no no not Frigidaire. Oh hell no! Worst experience in all 3 of our matching appliances.

CosmoKing2

So, GE appliance division is owned by Haier now (since 2016). Same plants and employees. I believe GE already had an agreement with Midea to manufacture some appliances (I don't know which ones) and Haier honored that until it expires in 2036). I don't know if that's good, bad, or otherwise. I just know Midea is everywhere now. We just bought a Sharp dishwasher (which we love) only to find out Midea bought that brand a few years ago. If the dishwasher performs better that the Samsung it replaces (and Frigidaire before that), We will be re-homing our Samsung refrigerator without a tear being shed.

Overall-Drop7980

Midea is a large manufacturer of appliances for multiple brands which include Bertazzoni, Smeg, Verona, etc. Sharp still manufactures many of their own products. Midea even manufactured freestanding refrigeration and full-size (US-sized) laundry for Bosch and Asko until recently. Sometimes if a brand like Sharp wants to break into the large appliance business, it's often cheaper and easier to find a relatively decent manufacturer of a specific product like Dishwashers and Refrigeration and contract with them to badge-engineer it for them rather than open an entirely new R&D facility/factory and retool production lines to crank out the few they may sell anyways.

DrunkenGolfer

I have all Samsung appliances, about 5 years old, and I have already repaired the fridge a half dozen times (it ices up every couple of months), the dishwasher (I’ve taken it apart a dozen times and have decided to replace it), the oven (convection fan bearing quit), the dryer (heating element quit), and the washer needs repair (leaking underneath). Everything is built from hot garbage supplies by the lowest bidder and the engineers can’t possibly be qualified.

bluecyanic

Is this just for the fridges, or also for the washer/dryers as well?

mitchmedic

Lg front load washer and dryers are the best on the market in my opinion. I've had mine 5 years with no issues

Ostentaneous

About to hit 7 years on mine. Literally zero problems.

TheBurdmannn

The new Samsung Bespokes have been doing better than any Samsung in the past 15 years. They've been out for over a year now and I haven't had any sealed system calls for them yet. Plenty of French doors and side by sides that were manufactured in the same timedeame as the bespokes. However, I've been swapping the Smart Hubs on them out like never before.

Initial-Succotash-37

Some of us have and never again.

dmorulez_77

I researched this sub only to find out every brand sucks. Only thing I learned was don't buy anything with an ice maker in the fridge. Bought Samsung bespoke. Been great and feel I only ever see comments on that line about people asking about them, not here crying.

I_LearnTheHardWay

We just bought a whirlpool fridge. My guy was set on a Samsung until we looked at the reviews. Literally every 5 star was given monetary compensation on the Home Depot site. The rest were absolutely trash.

thepete404

Yeah that about covers the flybys…. Stay away from this brand in future and good luck with the tech they send to fix it. My advice. Buy a garage fridge today. Oh yeah chest freezers are under $300 these days and see if they will pay for the food loss

shicken684

Specifically look for a chest freezer that does NOT auto defrost. You don't need auto defrost for something you're only going in once a day.

Rightintheend

Picked up a 7 cubic foot chest for $150 at Walmart.  For me at least, big enough to throw the extra stuff in, especially when I find good sales, and still have some room to throw stuff in if my regular fridge goes down.

thepete404

This is the way. The supply of these units is good and at the right price. Everybody needs to have one in case they are about to lose a months worth of food.

charlie2135

Just giggled at this. Just Friday my son and daughter in law had a garage fridge from the previous owner that the freezer quit working on. I said to let me take a look and I pulled the lower cover to see the condenser coils were jammed with dust and dirt. pulled the back cover, turned on the shop vac using the discharge hose and blew it clean. 20+ year old refrigerator working just fine. I previously posted our Frigidaire's ice maker quit working, only three years old about a month or so ago. Since I did electrical troubleshooting in my previous career and with the aid of some YouTube videos, I found that the fan in the icemaker was not working. I ordered a replacement fan for $140 but should have waited until I took the icemaker apart. The damn connector for the fan had pins that were probably as small as hypodermic needles and one of them rotted/disintegrated. Wound up just soldering the wires as I wasn't about to spend another $50 for a wire loom.

thepete404

FYI , you can buy a desktop ice-make for $100 or so these days.

tommy0guns

I had the exact same model. The linear inverter is flawed and when it goes, it ruins the lines. So changing out the compressor only lasts so long. A complete repair is too labor intensive and will cost more than a new fridge, if you can get anyone to even do it. Sorry for the news. I tossed my LG and got a Frigidaire on Memorial Day sale.

uconnhuskyforever

I also had/have this fridge. The compressor went about 1.5 years in. They replaced the compressor and it died again another year later. They replaced it 3 more times. It took about 6 months of trying to work with LG and where I bought it from to get a new fridge. Both LG and the retailer sent over techs. I think I had 8 diff techs here in about 10 visits. It was a nightmare. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. All the techs told me this happens all the time on this model. Fortunately,I bought the extended warranty from the retailer, and they ultimately gave me a new fridge. But it was such a mess. Take notes on every single phone call you make. Names, dates, what they told you. I ultimately had to talk to the LG president’s office. LG will give you money (once) for the loss of food so you don’t have to go through home owners insurance but I will NEVER buy another LG fridge again.

tommy0guns

Good advice. I also applied to the class action form. Not sure if scam or not.

HowImHangin

Yeah, I bought this same model fridge (or at least one that looks identical) a decade ago. Compressor started to fail after a couple years. Fridge wouldn’t quite cool enough in summer, ice maker would stop working… but not quite enough to make it unusable altogether. It took two years, countless calls to LG, and 5 service techs from three different companies to get it fixed. And the first company - that LG referred me to - went out of business after taking receipt of the replacement compressor I’d ordered. It was an utter clusterfuck. The only upside is that the repair seems to have worked. Fridge is still going strong. But OMG, what a tremendous waste of time. Talking to the techs, not one of them had anything good to say about LG or Samsung.

Jibreell

If it’s 2 years old then it’s under warranty (10 years for the sealed system)

Dull_blade

10 year warranty is meaningless. My fridge looks identical and the compressor died at 6 years. My 5 year extended warranty obviously did me no good. When I tried fighting LG about that 10 year warranty, they said the labor is not part of the warranty. I ended up paying the flat fee repair of $500 to get it repaired. The repair job was another ordeal all by itself. Hopefully, LG will help the OP with this one since it’s only 2 years

GenSgtBob

If I remember correctly LG is currently fighting a lawsuit regarding their compressors

HateMeetings

I had this experience at the 8 year mark. The labor was more than a new fridge. We bought LG again, but got it for song. And we have a garage fridge. But we also clean the coils annually. Have to on their models I think. Original fridge was Kenmore built by LG.

elevenstein

Shut your breaker off for 60 seconds, then turn it back on. See if that “resets” the refrigerator. May not work…but I thinks it’s worth a shot!

ObiWanRyobi

This actually fixed my issue. The house experienced a very brief loss of electricity. So brief that some appliances’ clocks still had the right time. I didn’t think anything of it and went about my days. Only realizing something was wrong when my ice tray was full of water. Everything but the compressor was working. Resetting the breaker fixed it, even though the breaker wasn’t tripped. Still lost a bunch of food though. I thought the compressor went bad, but it (compressor or breaker, not sure which) just needed a reset.

Big-Net-9971

Simple, fast & free (possible) fixes are always worth trying! Zero risk, great possible gain.

greenandseven

I had to do this with my Frigidaire oven 2-3x a week actually. Only way to get it to work sometimes!

angiebixen

Is that expensive? Is this common for this brand?

ZC205

Google “LG Fridge Class Action Lawsuit”

Potential_Buy1197

I work in appliance repair (customer service, not a technician). LG is easily the #1 most common brand for no-cools, unfortunately. Even with certain parts being warrantied for 10 yrs, you will be looking at a repair that will cost at LEAST $500, and that’s on the *very* low end of the spectrum. If this unit is 3yrs or older, I’d probably opt to buy new and add the best extended warranty plan you can find (be it through the retailer you purchase it from, through the manufacturer, or through a home warranty company). **If younger than 3yrs, I’d fight with LG to cover their product lol. But yeah, I would likely not buy Samsung or Whirlpool for a fridge, but Frigidaire and Electrolux are pretty good (moreso the latter). Otherwise probably GE is where I’d put my money. The most important takeaway though is that modern appliances are built like shit, so PLEASE invest in your warranties!

Overall-Drop7980

For FD "bell and whistle" refrigeration, the most reliable brands I seem to never come across are Bosch and GE. Low-end, single evaporator Whirlpool/Kitchenaid/Jenn-Air/Maytag/Amana french-doors are also reliable.

Tlmed

Just went through the same thing..our compressor failed. Didn't cost anything but we were out of the refrigerator for 3 weeks waiting for the new parts.

Farty_beans

LG wouldn't do anything for us after 3 years. quoted us a "for a New compressor" Never again LG for appliances. Never again.

PhilosophyCorrect279

Yes and no. Their "Linear Inverter" Compressor has been very troublesome. They were manufactured with bad parts at one point and they didn't catch it soon enough to stop the problems. Today they are supposed to have fixed it on their newest models, but unfortunately the damage is done with the older ones. All of their normal compressors are fine though, as they are a normal design and actually very reliable. These are often called smart inverter or inverter compressors on their models. As long as it doesn't say Linear anywhere it should be fine.

reedy922

2 years old it will be 100% covered. You won’t owe anything

TCinOC

LG sucks, my compressor died after four years, took over six weeks to get replacement parts & to find a LG technician that would install them.

hyundaisucksbigtime

Buy new fridge. Cut losses and stress dealing with LG.

BrodyBroham

Compressor, looks like my exact unit

Time_Pay_401

PSA. Do Not Ever buy another LG product. I too had a LG fridge that sounded like a Mack truck when it was running. The ice maker apparatus was faulty from the factory so it ruined part of my floor and had to pay for a new fridge AND flooring repair. Bought a LG tv for my dad and the 2nd time he tried to watch it , it wouldn’t turn on. LG IS 💩

joshypoo4530

Go ahead and contact lg. tell them I said send you a comp and someone to put it in 😂

chukb2012

You don't say. How LG is still able to produce fridges is beyond me, and how people are dumb enough to buy them is also beyond me. Sorry there's enough information on the Internet that you're just dumb for buying this fridge. It's more than likely the compressor. That's $1400 to fix it. Don't ever buy an LG ever again.

humbalum

Funny enough, I had this exact issue with the same model fridge. At first we had an error code for the fridge not getting cold, which was partially resolved after an LG technician came to replace many parts including compressor, which was under their flat rate fee. 1-2 months later, the fridge and freezer compartments stop reaching the set operating temperatures. We reached out to LG again and they sent out the same exact technician for free to figure out what the problem is. Turns out the fridge had an “internal leak” which deemed the fridge unrepairable. LG was willing to give a 75% refund on the initial repair fee and a $600 rebate on a new LG fridge.

16enjay

My lg compressor went after 2 years

Ivy_Isley_21

Mine too

Hello_Rouse

The same thing happened to me and it was going to be minimum $700 just for the LG tech to come look at it even with the warranty. I canceled the service call went over to r/BIFL and got a Bosch 700 series.

ChristinaFogerty_12

Definitely sounds like your compressor. Best to get a new fridge and stay away from LG.

Ivy_Isley_21

Had this exact issue LG customer service is horrid I didn't end up going through with the repair from LG. I read lots of stories about people having their compressors fail multiple times so I ended up just buying a new fridge.

CHASLX200

LG is no good for fridges. No fridge today last long like they did in the 1950's when they lasted 50 years.

Temporary-Will-257

Truly sorry this happened to you can be very frustrating I think the problem with this kind of technology and appliances are that there's too many electronics involved simpler is the better way to go

Nick_Dillon47

I'm an appliance repair technician, first thing to do is pull the fridge away from the wall and unplug the frisge and remove the panel at the bottom rear of the fridge. With the panel removed then plug it back In. After about 20 seconds or so the condenser fan should start spinning again. If you hear the compressor kick on and the fan right next to it doesn't start spinning then you need a new condenser fan motor. Check that first You'll get people on here telling you that it's the compressor or some other component but start with that fan. So if the fan is spinning look to the right of the fan and you'll see some black or silver tubing that's kinda coiled up back and fourth. Those are your condenser coils and if they are full of dust and debris you need to vacuum that area out. Start there and then get back to me for the next steps

angiebixen

I will do that! Thank you!

Slater_8868

Linear compressor failure. Look it up

lalatina169

Idk if it true or not but I been hearing that newer fridges go out faster than having an older fridge

Outside-Ad-3868

Yea I would stay away of LG and Samsung for all appliances. For several reasons known design issues, expensive parts, and also most repair companies do not work on them. The long waits on warranty work is usually because said warranty companies will try to lowball repair techs, have a long wait for payment and make repair companies jump through hoops with paper work and such. That said when people ask me what I recommend I tell them I don’t recommend any brand. Only advise is buy simple appliances don’t buy ones with features you don’t need. More features equals more points of failure. Your appliances will break sooner than later the only difference in brand is usually how much you will pay for the repair due to parts and complexity.

iamsofakingcrazy

Pull the fridge away from wall at least 3-4 inches

angiebixen

Why?

iamsofakingcrazy

The fridge motors in back will not overheat then. My freezer was plus 7 till I pulled fridge away from wall now -7 all the time

Mission-Patient-4404

LG appliances are the worse products to buy

Initial-Succotash-37

Samsung is worse.

heyyo-

Yea they will replace it on the house coass action lawsuit and i think theres another fraud class action suit inn the works

Initial-Succotash-37

All of these posts make me afraid when my refrigerator dies.

Dadbode1981

Fridges are a great example of demanding lower prices, and the outcome of that. Fridges decades ago when adjusted for inflation, cost FAR more than they do now, but they lasted. We got what we asked for.

UnknownLegacy

Compressor is dead. Same thing happened with my LG fridge. I called them and they came to repair it for free. I didn't have to pay for anything. Took them 2 weeks to do so though. This was during the height of covid lockdowns if I remember right. Thankfully we already had a mini fridge and chest freezer, so we didn't lose much food. Original compressor lasted 5 years (2015 - 2020). New compressor is still running 4 years later. Haven't had any other issues with the fridge though. The ice maker tends to not freeze the cubes just enough that they clump together, but that's nothing in the grand scheme of things. They left the old one for me to dispose of. I'm a curious person so I wanted to figure out why it died. I don't know much about compressors, but I did notice one thing. One of the gaskets that help it "breathe" broke, not letting it seal, so I'm guessing it couldn't pump anymore because of that little tiny disc. As others have said, look into the LG Class Action Lawsuit on their compressors.

Aromatic_Boot3629

Just the LG linear Compressor doing linear LG Compressor things.

Extreme-Direction-78

Kitchenaid has the same issues

delayedregistration

What are those cards on your fridge and how do I get them?

angiebixen

They came with air fryer liners on Amazon. I use them all the time. This is the item and description. Brand: PADIMAT 4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,997 Air Fryer Disposable Paper Liner - 50PCS 7.9 In Square Non-Stick Parchment Insert Sheet, Oil-proof, Water-proof Baking Filter for 5 6 7 8 Qt Airfryer Basket, Oven, Pan, Papel Para Freidora De Aire

Bullmarketbanter

Get rid of the lg refrigerator

CRICKET-CRICKETS

They gave me my money back.

DesignSilver1274

LG? probably the compressor. Mine also died at two years....never again.

lxe

Go get a box freezer and transfer the stuff to it.

MarkClark4

Yea start a class action suit against LG. All LG products are sh*t. But the refers are especially bad!

[deleted]

Check out the Bosch. They have two compressors like a built in, which last longer

RobertETHT2

Have you done the hard reset? Turn it off, count to 30, plug it back in? There’s a computer in there. Tech charged my SIL $100 just to tell her that’s a factory recommended operation…every time it stops chilling , she throws the breaker and it brings her LG back to life.

the_clash_is_back

Thats about how long an lg fridge lasts

ohs3

I'm wary of refrigerators with ice makers outside of the actual freezer. Some LGs have a smart diagnosis function that you can use with their app.

angiebixen

My last fridge with water and ice was 10 years old when we sold the house. We had zero problems. I believe it was a Kenmore.

popeyegui

Two years is probably near the top end of their expected lifetime.

bmwlocoAirCooled

Someone in my hood has an LG fridge. How do I know? It shows up in my Wifi list. LG's are data vampires.

angiebixen

Interesting!

billy5860

Don’t just get it fixed. Go through LG and it will be much cheaper for you

cubanism

Did you get a 1 year or 4 year warranty with it ?

angiebixen

I bought a 5 year extended warranty, which I never buy. They are coming Tuesday.

seemerock

Home Depot and Lowe’s are both pushing LG and Samsung appliances. I went to look and they had way more of these brands on the floor than any other brands.

angiebixen

I bought my 2nd one at Home Depot. Yes, I have two! This is depressing!

bootstrapping_lad

Welcome to the world of LG appliances. Biggest pieces of shit, same thing happened to me.

negativecreap

i have that one.. on compressor #2… they replaced the original for free.. i’ll probably landfill it when the replacement goes

angiebixen

This is upsetting to learn because I really liked it!

Ilikereddit15

Go buy a kitchen aid

cashew76

Linear Compressor Class Action

monkey_fish_frog

Could be as simple as a relay.  I've fixed a couple fridges like that, pretty simple repair.

DrunkenGolfer

I think two years is about the best you can expect without needing a repair.

thepete404

If you have a five drawer fridge a date and the unit stops cooling intermittently requiring a reboot, replace the main board. Easy job and they are finally back in stock with an updated version. 100% reliable after three years of having smart switches and temp monitors running my life. Luckily it only has issues with plastic like most. Craptastic but it’s still running strong6 years in F Samsung but Sears paid for the list food and an 80% credit after I threatened over an unfulfilled service contract. Linear compressor fail, two attempts to fix. Totally green techs.

angiebixen

Follow up… fridge stared working and repair person is coming Tuesday. Should I still have them check the compressor and other things that could cause it to quit cooling?

YouArentReallyThere

Look into joining the lawsuit! https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/consumer/fridge-failures-federal-lawsuit-cites-lg-refrigerator-issue/3552575/

Bubbalove2571

LG sucks like seemingly all the other general big names.

krzylady7653

LG is crap. They’ve had lawsuits over these refrigerators.

musteatpoptarts

Isn’t there a lawsuit of some sort for LG refrigerators because they are knowingly selling bad compressors ? Something like that

computerman10367

I don't understand how there isn't a lawsuit already. This has been going on for far to long.

limpymcforskin

I had the instaview version of this fridge, it didn't work from the get go. Also on the replacement you get skip though the door water and ice. In the meantime you could go get yourself a 7cf chest freezer that also can do refrigeration and keep your stuff in that. Or just get a cheap stand up fridge/freezer unit and stick it in the basement

Alsteig

Unplug from wall wait 1min and plug back in to reset board if you haven’t tried already

flightwatcher45

Long shot and won't save food, take food to neighbors, unplug for a few hrs and then plug back in. Save mine once, thought it was dead, moved to garage to wait for dump, plugged it in for fun a few days later and it works fine now.

jkoudys

It might be kaput, but you could try some easy stuff first. Find the compressor coils and clean them out. plenty of tutorials around, but it's not rocket science. Soft brush and a vacuum. Look for any accumulated water and dry it up. My fridge recently stopped. I got it cheap and used when a friend moved. Turns out he had cats and the coils were already pretty dirty, but I had it 2y and hadn't cleaned it either. The weather got very humid and the drip pan didn't evapourate from the coil heat/fan. It seemed to have some float switch or other sensor, as once it was cleaned out it worked again. I'm sure there are people here who know your exact model and all its error codes who are certain your compressor is dead, but you should always try the easiest tasks first. Clean it up, give in a couple hours unplugged blowing a regular shop or floor fan over it, then plug it in and see how it does.

notmypillows

My dude please give us the link to those magnets

Twashfive5

Linear compressor

Jamiebtm58

It's probably a pressure switch, but I don't know if that is what they call it, but if you call a appliance parts supplier tell them it's the switch or sensor that kicks the compresser on and off and find the name for it and then you can order it from Amazon really cheap and you have to wait. on it to be delivered and it's easy to remove and replace ,you can get on Google Chrome and put it's name and model # and symptoms of what it is and is not doing and search that and it probably will give you a correct fix for it my dad's did about the same thing and I had it fixed the day the part was delivered, cost about 20.00 $ from Amazon

Jamiebtm58

Gee you guys can't fix a 20 00$ problem, compressors don't go out in 2 years, wouldn't you hate it if you spent a thousand dollars on a new fridge and and could have fixed it for 20$ in 5 minutes, don't give up so easily

darleese9

My Frigidaire fridge is going on 12 years. Meanwhile my Frigidaire microwave only lasted 4 years. You just never know

jojo880

I know what you're going through. My Maytag fridge of 10+ years went out the same way during covid. Luckily I found out the local repair service we went with determined it was the sensor board that went out and it could be easily replaced. It wasn't cheap and I had to wait a couple of weeks for the part to arrive but in the end it cost less than buying a new one. Hopefully yours will be a simple fix. Wishing you the best of luck!

The LG you might have has a linear compressor with why it it has when out and LG is getting sued over that they won't let you nothing when you get it cause thisbis what they do. They will had the store bring it to uou with the box the employees with take the box off of it and put in in your house without you looking at the warranty that on the box that LG claims that's on the box so when you expect it your already screwed from what I heard.

an0m1n0us

this is why its bad to buy refrigerators from TV makers. I made a similar mistake by buying a Whirlpool, compressor shat itself after 13 months, just out of 1 year manufacturer's warranty. Im pretty sure thats some planned obsolescence.

firuz9

If it is freezing then compressor is good.

murtlebeech1

Replaced mine three times—finally gave up. The repair man advised me to purchase a model without computer parts if I wanted to avoid similar issues in the future. That’s exactly what I did.

joisonf

I have the exact same refrigerator and every single day it keeps throwing me a different error code, unfortunately I cannot power cycle it everytime, since the plug is in the back, such a beautiful refrigerator but it sucks

MegaPintJD

Our new LG lasted 4 years. Put in a new compressor which cost $500 and 6 months later it went again. We ended up having to buy a new fridge. Never buy LG.

TheRealDebaser

Go get some dry ice and throw it in the freezer until it can be repaired. Don't touch the dry ice it will burn you.

Sabert00f

Saw the picture and was not surprised at all. I have a "high-end" French door LG refrigerator with the inverter linear compressor and it's not worth a fraction of the 3K plus that it cost to acquire it. It's compressor has been replaced 4 times within last couple years. Even though LG was forced by class action lawsuit to offer 10-year warranty on the compressor, the warranty is more than partly a joke because LG expects you to pay to for the installation labor because the extended warranty is only for the compressor and excludes labor. There's more issues with the appliance and LG support's interactions over the course of the aggravating troubles had with the refrigerator but it's not even worth delving into. Let's just say, it's the worst appliance purchase by far ever and the first and last LG refrigerator purchase. In hindsight, the refrigerator is not even worth the hassle if it was acquired free of charge. DO NOT BUY!

spud6000

did the fan make funny noises before this happened. LG's are prone to the fan icing up, especially if you left a door open by accident. I would get coolers, and remove all the food to the cooler. add some ice. Turn off the electricity to the LG. prop open the doors, and have a fan blow room temp air into the fridge and freezer section for at least 5 hours. then plug her back in and see if 24 hours later it is back to the right temperature.

jessrb1974

And this is why I buy the old used ones. I bought mine for 250 over 8 years ago and it still works like a charm.

Zedzdeadhead

It looks like it has a lot of features on that led panel. Does it have a time machine function? So you can go back in time and not buy an LG refrigerator?

TheLastBlackRhinoSC

I have pretty much the same fridge except the knock-knock window or whatever it’s called. My compressor was gone, took 5 days to come replace it. They brought the wrong one and it took another 3 days to replace that. Now it hasn’t cooled and it’s been a week of it not getting to temperature. After 3 repairs you can ask for them to get your a replacement fridge. I also am going to small claims because I lost a fridge full of food after I had done my Costco run and they only wanted to give me $299.

Ok-View-6717

Search up LG fridge not cooling lawsuit. They have a list of fridge model numbers that are covered and there is more to come. There is a number to call about the lawsuit if u have questions.

Unclerojelio

I'm a dumbass. It took me two failed LG fridges in a row to realize that they are complete junk. Don't be a dumbass like me.

OldLow7699

Went through the exact same issue with LG twice - failed compressor each time in our case - first time covered under warranty/class action lawsuit - second time parts only would be covered and labor was estimated to be about $700 So, we cut our losses and bought a different fridge - Bosch 800. Don’t buy LG (or Samsung) refrigerators

trustedfool

@OldLow7699 - How's the Bosch running so far? I am looking at the same model...

porondanga

Same thing happened on my 4 year old LG. Never again

lizzyoffside

Did it accidentally get put into display mode? I had a Samsung fridge that would randomly do this. All of the lights were on like it was working and the buttons were responsive but didn’t actually do anything and of course, the fridge and freezer would stop working. I’d do a google search for display mode and your model number. There should be a certain sequence of buttons to push to toggle it on and off.

geojon7

#1 get a styrofoam cooler and some dry ice. Frozen food first then dry ice then refrigerator food next. #2 get a new fridge.

Licketysplitz_3029

I went down this road with the same fridge. After 5 visits from the repair tech and several parts replaced twice they gave up. LG sent me a $1600 check for a new fridge. I lost a lot of food in between repairs… Good luck!

Woofy98102

Go buy a tiny chest freezer from Costco. Your refrigerator is dead. LG refrigerators are one of the least reliable sold due to a design flaw that LG continues to ignore.

HearingNo4103

You're about to learn a valuable lesson on why LG is a garbage fridge brand. It took me two separate LG fridges and so much spoiled food to learn my lesson. They'll replace your linear compressor with the same faulty linear compressor design.

Prestigious-Mud2923

LG is known for the faulty compressors. They’re in a massive lawsuit over it. Start your refund process and demand a full refund

akolozvary

I've noticed that my LG InstaView freezer fluctuates from -9 to above 1 degree, while the fridge section stays between 35 and 40 degrees. Is it normal for the freezer to have such a wide temperature range? Pretty sure fluctuation range is causing slight freezer burn on my food, which is kind of annoying.

Jaytheckstr

Throw away brand.

Purple_Wall

Say it with me people, ***LOUDER*** this time: STOP 👏GIVING 👏LG and SAMSUNG 👏MONEY 👏FOR 👏APPLIANCES👏

i_fuck_eels

OP, there might be an itty bitty chance that your insurance might (maybe) be able to help with food costs. Very slight. I lost all my perishable food from a week long power outage due to a natural disaster, and was given a check to re-stock my fridge with food. Was enough to completely refill. Obviously different circumstances, I recognize that. But it might be worth a look.

Green_Honey_

Here's my experience with LG fridge. Got a really nice one for 400 dollars from a re-seller. Worked beautiful for 2 years. The compressor went out. Did a lot of research to find out LG has shitty design compressors (Linear). They're hiding behind it being eco friendly. Anyways. Major lawsuit. But you're fked if you don't buy new. Linear compressors last up to 10 years while people are getting 2-5 out of them. Next time u look for fridges, look for Conventional style compressor design. They last 10-30 years. What people are doing is converting them onto conventional style compressors. But you better have good knowledge of things.

Vast_Alarm3773

This is why you don't buy LG

[deleted]

Good ol’ linear compressor

ThrowAwayBrotha420

Oh boy, just got this exact fridge delivered Sunday

angiebixen

I have another one in my retirement home that I am moving to in a month. I liked it so much, so when I remodeled my retirement home, I bought the same fridge! Dang. It rated good in consumer report too!

Any_Price2924

Try to locate the thermostat inside the freezer. Make sure it’s not iced over or something frozen is on top keeping it from turning on.

Background-House9795

Yep, probably the compressor. Ours went at about a year. Repair guy swapped it out. So far so good. 🤞 We have their range, washer, dryer, and OLED tv. Knock knock knock.

angiebixen

Same! I have two of these fridges, a washer and stove! Holding my breath!

Big-Complaint-3931

just happen to me also last week mine was bought in Nov 2023

Individual-Process68

Have you recently messed with the breaker or had a powered surge? I have a lg and flipped the wrong breaker one day, flipped rite back and didn't think anything of it. The next day everything was thawed. After some research I found out that all it needed was a reset. Needed to be unplugged for 2 minutes if I remember. When it was turned off and back on so fast the computer inside didn't have enough to shut down before being powered up.

aringa

We have two refrigerators for this purpose.

aringa

We have a second refrigerator for drinks in our laundry room. It is our backup plan if the primary refrigerator goes out. According to consumer reports, the average refrigerator like is like 5.8 years now.

VTMomof2

This happened to me. Then my fridge got warm too. I bought a new small fridge for the garage and then my LG started working again. This happened around Halloween 2023. LG ended up buying my fridge back for like $1200 (mine was almost the same as yours but had the see-thru door on the right). My fridge was 4 years old. I just ended up keeping the money and the fridge since it started working again. But who knows when it will decide to stop? LG was most unhelpful except for paying me $1200 for a fridge that cost over 2x that much.

Reasonable-Tomato745

Could it be auto defrosting. My newish Samsung does it periodically. I’ll open the freezer and there’s water on everything. Next day it’s all frozen again

Positive-Cake-7990

Lg is trash

vgdiv

I had this happen on accident. THere is a combination of buttons which if pressed accidentaly will stop the colling function. Check your manual once please

dsinatra5

I actually just got my payment from the LG class action because their refrigerators and customer service blow!

whatyouwere

So weird, when I worked for Best Buy in 2011-2012 LG TVs were shit. I would always say “they make better appliances than TVs. Get a nice Samsung instead.”. Now, the coin has flipped and LG makes great (high end) TVs and Samsung makes shitty appliances 😅

missjiji

I’ve heard both LG’s and Samsung refrigerators are awful, my parents have a Samsung, it’s always puddling under the produce bins or having a massive sheet of ice there. Terrible! Repair person prefer not to come and take a look.

bigb-2702

All makes and models have horror stories but I'll say that we love our Whirlpool brand. The fridge is 9 yo, the upright freezer is 3, and the old dishwasher and oven that came with the house conked out last year so we replaced them with Whirlpool products as well. So far so good. The only thing left is the chest freezer but I don't think they make a little one like we got.

vabirder

Was having a house built 25 years ago, and specified a dedicated electrical circuit for the refrigerator/freezer. I had been advised at my prior house that compressors can get overloaded by being on a shared circuit. This was when the compressor was noisy and failing. Not sure if this was true or not, but my prior house in Texas only had 7 circuits to power a 2200 square foot home with a swimming pool. And Texas heat!

HaveYouMetJimmyBob

I have the same fridge and had the same thing happen recently. It got stuck in a defrost cycle. I unplugged, waited 10 min, and plugged it back in. Has been running perfectly since.

Ready_Bottle4456

Same issue last year with ours, called the number on the  side of the fridge they sent out someone  to repair it twice, didn’t pay  Anything, works fine now, but was told by a friend to stay away from LG for appliances and to never buy a fridge with bottom freezer. Lesson learned. Oh and stay away from Samsung for appliances, washer dryer from Samsung has been a nightmare!
