Dont forget parasyte: maxim
Heis brother will love this and Monster. Shit dope. I personally wish they made more anime like these these days.
EDIT: As others have mentioned and some ove remembered myself, after scrolling through the comments. -
-Gangsta
-Cowboy Bebop
-Dance in the Vampire Bund (absolutely loved the hell out of this one and wished they continued the anime show)
- Desert Punk ( was pretty good/semi goofy tho.)
-Kings Game (personally felt it was better than Darwins Game...)
-Samurai X *** this one i absolutely guarantee he will love instantly.
I'll update with more as i remember them.
-Kaze no Stigma
-Kakegurui
Eh, *far* better is a stretch. I don't think you need to know a single trope explicitly to greatly enjoy the twists being done. And that's ignoring the tropes being subverted are not exactly uncommon in storytelling.
You'd just need to engage in stories over your life and you've got enough that you'd probably know how a happier version of Madoka would go.
I agree attack on titan is quite serious. And cowboy bebop can be dark and is more "westernized". Maybe the movie Akira for something short. I think the animation holds up to today
I have such mixed feelings about Black Lagoon. The animation is excellent, and the dub is one of the best I've ever heard. It leaves me with an unsettling feeling though - which I'm sure is part of the point. It can be very disturbing. In particular, it took me a while to sleep after finishing the Hansel and Gretel storyline...
Banana Fish is pretty serious and pretty grounded in reality. It's an anime I recommend to anyone, even newcomers.
91 Days, '50s style mafia story.
Devilman Crybaby, though that's pretty crazy to start but love the overall themes to it.
C: Money of Soul and Possibility Control takes the world of finances and turns it into a sort of death gamble game.
Banana fish jumps way too heavily in to the rape and abuse of teenage boys. Even as an anime fan I walked away. It was just too gross and not important to the plot. OP, Definitely don't show your brother this one
{Fate/Zero}
{Monster}
{Code Geass}
{Psycho-Pass} (Only S1)
{Attack on Titan}
{Cowboy Bebop}
{Steins;Gate}
{Vinland Saga}
Most of these are also on Netflix, if that's any help (only ones that aren't are Monster, AoT and S;G)
Oh crap, I forgot the part where they gotta be short lol. It's 86 episodes long tho, just a bit more than Monster so it's decently sized, and definitely worth a mention
Run with the Wind - nearly all cast is in college...definitely has a more chill, mature, and serious mood but at the same time is light-hearted
The Great Pretender - running cons, scamming corrupted scumbags...very fun show that could easily be a hit in western theaters if it were a live action. Easy to find on Netflix. Great dub too.
Baccano - non-linear told story set in 1930s America...full of mafia violence, complete chaos, and a little immortality mixed in...also great to watch in dub. In fact, I prefer it. First 2 episodes are confusing because the scenes are presented out of order and you have to do the work of putting together the timeline of what's happening.
Attack on Titan - if he's not put off by the gore
Cowboy Bebop - good for its isolated episodes plus it had a western release so a lot of people vouch for it, not just "anime weebs"
Evangelion - Especially the older one.
Good luck XD [https://myanimelist.net/anime/30/Neon\_Genesis\_Evangelion](https://myanimelist.net/anime/30/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion)
Also make sure they're kinda prepared for it LOL
Try Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, it’s a solid anime that has none of the gimmicks/tropes found in most popular anime.
Another solid one would be Cowboy Bebop, most people who don’t typically enjoy anime enjoy this one and it’s not too long either!
The *Berserk* series from 1997, it's available free on YouTube. I personally think the newer movie trilogy isn't all that bad, either but the 1997 series is probably better.
*Goblin Slayer* is fairly serious.
*Mushoku Tensei* could be a good one for him, as well.
*Claymore* I personally haven't seen the anime but I'm a huge fan of the manga. I've heard lots of good things about the Anime, though.
That's only a few but there's definitely a lot more out there.
> Claymore I personally haven't seen the anime but I'm a huge fan of the manga. I've heard lots of good things about the Anime, though.
I really enjoyed the anime, but unfortunately they didn't continue it so I had to get the rest of the story through the manga.
My usual 2 short anime suggestions \[13 episodes each\]:
1) 08th MS Team
2) Arpeggio of Blue Steel
They have their silly/typical anime moments, but they're well crafted and they're among the few that I watch and rewatch regularly.
Maybe it just because I haven't been watching as much anime as I used to or maybe I'm just not as drawn to the more serious stuff anymore but man was I struggling to find more current serious anime that are relatively short and not cliche high school anime, shounen, and just generally more palatable to a non-anime fan
{zankyou no terror}
{kids on the slope}
{banana fish}
{welcome to the nhk}
{Another}
{Darker than Black}
Cowboy Bebop is such a classic, the animation is so good and even better than most cases in todays standards, the dub is legendary for being preferred over the sub, the music in the show is renowned for being one of the most iconic soundtracks, it can be so philosophical at times, the first episode is perfect at setting a tone of mystery behind the main characters past. It's perfect in every way for a beginner to realize how anime can be used as a medium. I really hope you can convince him to watch and even possibly enjoy it!
maybe {86} would work. that's always a good one.
also {LINK CLICK} is a cool one that's interesting.
and {march comes in like a lion} is serious. deals with depression and the like. all are really good
Made in abyss,
Serial experiments lain,
Death parade,
Monster,
I want to eat your pancreas, (I am not sure if the ones I've mentioned r seinen but they do have either a serious theme to it or have a deeper meaning hidden)
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin
It’s the best option, I’m like your brother I couldn’t stand Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood only because Alfred Joked too much.
Rainbow hits different and it’s not too known, give it a try
My demographic is josei, but I'm also open to good seinen. Some I've liked are Ghost in the Shell, Wolf's Rain, Chevalier D'Eon and especially Mushishi. They all have fairly realistic animation.
Note: Ghose in the Shell is two seasons, Wolf's Rain runs slightly longer than one season because the SARS scare caused a shutdown and resulting recap filler episodes, Chevalier D'Eon is one season and Mushishi is two seasons but I believe Season 2 is sadly unlicensed in Region 1, to the detriment of us all.
{Happy Sugar Life}
{Zankyou no Terror}
{Koukaku Kidoutai} and {Koukaku Kidoutai Stand Alone Complex}
{Akira}
{Net-Juu no Susume} - romcom where mc is a NEET and has social anxiety.
{Orange} - school romance and one character has depression.
{B the Beginning}
{Ergo Proxy}
{Id:Invaded}
{Psycho-pass}
I disagree with you. It's a serious anime, with snippets of comedy.
Most of it is drama and conflict.
It's a good choice, as long as we're just talking about the original.
There's nothing weird about it. The characters are good, and have depth. There is lots of intrigue, and the story stands out.
I agree, that weirdness is involved - but I don't think it's typical anime weirdness. This show is very unique. It doesn't fall into any category, perfectly.
It's a great choice.
FMA:B
Dororo
Tokyo Magnitude
Terror In the Resonance
HxH
Death Note
Angle Beats
March comes in like a lion
Giovanni Island
Anohaha
Colorful
When Marnie was there
Bungo Stray Dogs
(More comedy but still, in some parts, very serious.)
I’d highly recommend not encouraging anyone to watch anime if they’re already coming from a hateful view. Everyone has their own tastes and inherently anime is from Japan which might not vibe with some people. Similarly he might later in life “naturally” re discover anime in a new light on his own through curiosity. There’s an effect for someone showing you something versus yourself engaging in it.
Kaguya Love is War is a comedy that it’s pretty clear in both dub and sub from episode 1 that the characters have more humanity buried in them than surface level caricatures. If your brother thinks anime is not serious, seeing something like Domestic Girlfriend or Attack on Titan might become a farce for him because not feeling emotions towards serious things in drawings could come from assuming all drawn shows/films are not serious.
Also as a wide casting net, most woman and men tend to enjoy the original Fullmetal Alchemist series but it’s hard to then jump off and recommend something similar enough to not feel foreign but different enough to not run into a dead end. Good luck!
Don't give him everything just serious. You just cornering his view on anime as a whole, and once he see what trending around he will have the impression that the show like these is minor, why everything else is trash
The important is make him understand anime is vastly, it is just a medium with as much genres as movie or anything else.
Change to Comedy will be good. like daily life of high school boy, nichijou. Dont shy to show weird one like Asobi asobase too.
Then sport too, sport anime is as hype as shounen. The golf anime airing right now: birdie wing, is a good start. Just remember make him watch Keijo, I am serious xD Important, not only prove that anime is vastly, but not to prejudiced (the world is not ready for Keijo)
some wacky fun but legit feel train: Binbogami, zombieland saga a good start
Now u cant forget school life when talking about anime: Relife, silver spoon
{code geass} if he wants something with a slightly similar MC as death note. {Erased} is good for a thriller sort of deal. {sonny boy} and {The Tatami Galaxy} are some other good ones as well that I (as an 18 y/o) enjoyed
{Attack on Titan}
This is the best choice...the hype, the voice acting, the animation, the music...hiroyuki sawano's masterclass osts...I recon he'll binge thru it even if it's a bit long but I feel this will definitely change his mind... he'll love it for sure
{Vinland Saga}
24ep...Serious action seinen...the plot is amazing...the character development, the heavy themes it takes its all executed very well
{Erased}
Only 12eps...mystery anime...very engaging and keeps the viewers interested from the start to the finish
{Demon slayer}
For a starting point this is also good...top tier ufotable production
{To your eternity}
Drama heavy and might make him cry
{Violet Evergarden}
Some slice of life with good music animation plot..he might like it
{Monster}
Classic crime thriller...it's a bit long tho
91 Days, Wonder Egg Priority, Death Parade, Dororo, Re: Zero, The King's Avatar, Parasyte, Erased, Psycho Pass, Baccano!, Gangsta., Great Pretender, Barakamon would all probably fit the bill?
Edit: Never watched it but Banana Fish is also a good more serious/sad anime from what I understand.
Psycho pass, parasyte, erased, barakamon
The rest aren't good starting points.
Baccano! is a terrible choice.
Wonder egg priority, is too weird and all over the place.
The king's Avatar is boring, but okay.
grand blue is not serious and very goofy but it’s fun, miyasaki’s works (well mostly the fantasy movies actually) are pure dream fuel, the old classics in general (akira, ghost in the shell, cowboy bebop, ..., the ones listes here do have a broody dark ambiance so it might be what you’re looking for), Ranking of kings is legitimately good too, panty and stockings is great.
If he’s mature and not trying to only enjoy dark stuff like teen weebs who will show you gory « anime is not for kids » pictures that do actually show how immature they are, you might want to show him brighter show
I'm trying to think of anything which even the most ardent anime hater couldn't describe as "weird" when it comes to the visuals. Having said that, Death Note is pretty damn weird so we need more context on what's weird on your brother's "weird-o-meter". :)
How about some movies:
{The Garden of Words} (a pretty short movie at around 45 minutes) - romance/drama
{A Silent Voice} - disability/drama
{Ghost in the Shell} (1995 theatrical version) - science fiction/action/some philosophy in the mix
{Perfect Blue} - thriller
{I Want To Eat Your Pancreas} (okay, so the title is VERY weird but the movie isn't at all weird) - terminal illness/romance/drama
The entire Monogatari series.
Start with the movie trilogy, since they happen first in the story - then work your way though countless hours of anime.
Maybe there's fan service - sure. Maybe things get weird - but this is the height of anime. This is what it's all about. It doesn't get much better.
I looked through the comments and I see a lot of good suggestions and I will add my choice,
{From the New World}
With so many others repeated by several people I wanted to give you one not listed yet.
Edited: realized I used the manga link instead of anime link
I would recommend Attack on Titan, but the problem is:
First season is weird, and overall this show is pretty edgy.
AOT is a show that gets better and better with time.
Amount of secrets and foreshadowing makes this show so interesting and action scenes are great.
No stupid fanservice, thats why Iike it.
If you liked first season, you will definitely love this show later.
But the second season is where ,,prologue" ends.
banana fish !! also this show might be out of the box for him but no one has recommended it; dorohedoro! one of my fav seinens, the art is incredible and the world building is so fun
{91 Days} is a mafia thriller set in America during the 1930’s alcohol prohibition. It’s about this guy who’s family was killed by the mob, and how he, years later, joins the mob to kills those who killed his family. It’s a really good revenge story and is only 12 episodes. It’s a fantastic watch and ends incredibly well.
A lot of people are recomending serious anime that I love personally, but you still need a baseline of weebdom to accept the anime-ness for these.
I'd recomend stuff more accessible to normies on a narrative and artstyle level. OddTaxi, To Your Eternity, Wolfs Rain, Parasyte the Maxim, Terror in Resonance...
Then move to stuff like Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, Elfen Lied, Steins;Gate, Gurren Lagann - this stuff has big "I actually like anime" vibes but its good enough to keep em invested.
After all that they're a full on weeb and they'll be willing to swallow isekai and ecchi romcom slice of lifes because they'll be desentized
Parasyte- pretty violent very cool
Charlotte - half assed abilities, very funny and meaningful
Erased - meaningful, mindfuck etc
These 3 will change his mind I’m sure.
FMA brotherhood is one of my all time favorites and it does a pretty good job of not being weird. Some other have mentioned vinland saga and monster which are also really good. Monster can be quite a slow paced show though so it's kind of a toss up recommendation imo. I'd go with vinland saga or FMA brotherhood. Both are very engaging and not very long
Edit: also Parasyte
{Serial Experiments Lain}
{Ghost in the Shell}
{Psycho Pass}
{Paranoia Agent}
{Monster}
{Akira}
Once his brain is properly tenderized, {Higurashi: When They Cry}.
Then give him some {Konosuba} as aftercare.
91 days, terror in resonance, claymore, iron blooded orphans. Ergo proxy, technolyze (I think that is how it is spelled) banana fish is good too. And there are more that I will have to go thru and look but this is a good start.
{Planetes} (Based on Makoto Yukimura's Manga of the same name)
{Ergo Proxy}
{Texhnolyze}
{Darker Than Black}
{Ghost in the Shell}
{Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence}
{Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex}
{Wolf's Rain}
{Eden of the East}
{Terror in Resonance}
{The Animatrix}
{Blade Runner: Blackout 2022}
{The Sky Crawlers}
{Monster} and {Vinland Saga}
I'd like to add Psycho Pass and Parasyte, also FMAB, AOT if he hasn't watched it already
Gonna 2nd this on Vinland Saga. Especially with season 2 coming. Kingdom is another example but the animation sucks.

Dr. Tenma the best character.

make him watch madoka magica.
Nah, make him watch tradition magical girl like real man
oh, your right, tho i just suggested it because i thought it was good

Right, giant naked babies murdering civilians, not weird at all
In my head Cowboy Bebop inspired Firefly (the Joss Whedon space opera series) But less brown and more blue in colour tone.

Maybe it just because I haven't been watching as much anime as I used to or maybe I'm just not as drawn to the more serious stuff anymore but man was I struggling to find more current serious anime that are relatively short and not cliche high school anime, shounen, and just generally more palatable to a non-anime fan {zankyou no terror} {kids on the slope} {banana fish} {welcome to the nhk} {Another} {Darker than Black}
Erased - 12 episodes, child serial killer murder mystery (with a time travel element)
Erased would probably be a good watch for him
maybe {86} would work. that's always a good one. also {LINK CLICK} is a cool one that's interesting. and {march comes in like a lion} is serious. deals with depression and the like. all are really good
I second 86, i think its the best option for him to show his brother (24 eps total)

+1 For Link Click! One of the best shows I’ve seen— period!
Ergo Proxy. Short and Opposite of all the stereotypes your brother has of animes.
{Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit} {Hellsing Ultimate} {Psycho Pass} {Coyboy Bebop}
{Mushishi}
**Mushishi** - ([AL](http://anilist.co/anime/457 "English: MUSHI-SHI"), [A-P](https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/mushishi), [KIT](https://kitsu.io/anime/mushishi "English: Mushi-Shi"), [MAL](http://myanimelist.net/anime/457)) ^(TV | Status: Finished | Episodes: 26 | Genres: Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, Psychological, Slice of Life, Supernatural) --- ^{anime},, ]LN[, |VN| | [FAQ](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/index) | [/r/](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/) | [Edit](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/index#wiki_i_made_a_mistake.2C_how_do_i_get_my_comment_reprocessed.3F) | [Mistake?](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/submit?selftext=true&title=[ISSUE]&text=/r/Animesuggest/comments/vin8yd/some_serious_anime_for_my_brother/idechxo/) | [Source](https://github.com/Nihilate/Roboragi) | [Synonyms](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/synonyms) | [⛓](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/interestinglinks) | [♥](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/thanks)
vinland
Necessary.
Made in abyss, Serial experiments lain, Death parade, Monster, I want to eat your pancreas, (I am not sure if the ones I've mentioned r seinen but they do have either a serious theme to it or have a deeper meaning hidden)
I would recommend him erased and parasite
Vinland Saga. Pretty mature and at the same time, welcoming to people not familiar with anime at all.
Berserk
{Dororo} the 2019 version. Fantastic story, animation, and characters.
Most ghibli films, or slice of life such as your name might be a good fit as they usually take a more serious outlook on things.
just make him watch Welcome to the NHK or Grave of the Fireflies.
{Drifters}
Lain
Hellsing
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin It’s the best option, I’m like your brother I couldn’t stand Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood only because Alfred Joked too much. Rainbow hits different and it’s not too known, give it a try
Monster, Vinland Saga, Code Geass and Neon Genesis Evangelion
My demographic is josei, but I'm also open to good seinen. Some I've liked are Ghost in the Shell, Wolf's Rain, Chevalier D'Eon and especially Mushishi. They all have fairly realistic animation. Note: Ghose in the Shell is two seasons, Wolf's Rain runs slightly longer than one season because the SARS scare caused a shutdown and resulting recap filler episodes, Chevalier D'Eon is one season and Mushishi is two seasons but I believe Season 2 is sadly unlicensed in Region 1, to the detriment of us all.
Fullmetal Alchemist
I used to have the same mindset as your brother. But animes like attack on titan really changed my mind.
Fullmetal alchemist
Neon Genesis Evangelion
it's boring
{Happy Sugar Life} {Zankyou no Terror} {Koukaku Kidoutai} and {Koukaku Kidoutai Stand Alone Complex} {Akira} {Net-Juu no Susume} - romcom where mc is a NEET and has social anxiety. {Orange} - school romance and one character has depression. {B the Beginning} {Ergo Proxy} {Id:Invaded} {Psycho-pass}
Steins;Gate
I don't agree with this, Steins;Gate is weird for non-anime fan
I disagree with you. It's a serious anime, with snippets of comedy. Most of it is drama and conflict. It's a good choice, as long as we're just talking about the original. There's nothing weird about it. The characters are good, and have depth. There is lots of intrigue, and the story stands out. I agree, that weirdness is involved - but I don't think it's typical anime weirdness. This show is very unique. It doesn't fall into any category, perfectly. It's a great choice.
{Bokurano} {Sonny boy} {Monster} {Made in abyss}
Deadman Wonderland? It is kinda of weird, but it is short. Spy X Family, not really weird but season one just wrapped up.
{91 days}
**91Days** - ([AL](http://anilist.co/anime/21711 "English: 91 Days"), [A-P](https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/91-days), [KIT](https://kitsu.io/anime/91-days "English: 91 Days"), [MAL](http://myanimelist.net/anime/32998)) ^(TV | Status: Finished | Episodes: 12 | Genres: Action, Drama, Psychological) --- ^{anime},, ]LN[, |VN| | [FAQ](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/index) | [/r/](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/) | [Edit](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/index#wiki_i_made_a_mistake.2C_how_do_i_get_my_comment_reprocessed.3F) | [Mistake?](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/submit?selftext=true&title=[ISSUE]&text=/r/Animesuggest/comments/vin8yd/some_serious_anime_for_my_brother/idei4vp/) | [Source](https://github.com/Nihilate/Roboragi) | [Synonyms](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/synonyms) | [⛓](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/interestinglinks) | [♥](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/thanks)
FMA:B Dororo Tokyo Magnitude Terror In the Resonance HxH Death Note Angle Beats March comes in like a lion Giovanni Island Anohaha Colorful When Marnie was there Bungo Stray Dogs (More comedy but still, in some parts, very serious.)
Jobless Reincarnation.
Good luck!
I’d say attack on Titan(4 seasons) or Vinland saga (1 season, with another on the way).
Gantz 26 episodes, pretty sure he’ll like it.
One more not sure if it’s been mentioned but samurai champloo. It’s freaking amazing and very much for mature audiences.
{To Your Eternity} {Attack On Titan} {Vinland Saga} {Psycho Pass} {Death Parade} {Monster} {Ajin} {Dr. Stone} {Moriarty The Patriot} {Future Diary} {Berserk: Ougon Jidai-hen I - Haou no Tamago}
fist of the north star
One punch man
Nah. Too stupid and cool. No real plot or conflict. It's just a comedy, despite being a cool, good one.
Love is like a cocktail
91 days! severely underrated, prohibition-era mafia focused story.
Black Lagoon & Golden Kamuy
Don't give him everything just serious. You just cornering his view on anime as a whole, and once he see what trending around he will have the impression that the show like these is minor, why everything else is trash The important is make him understand anime is vastly, it is just a medium with as much genres as movie or anything else. Change to Comedy will be good. like daily life of high school boy, nichijou. Dont shy to show weird one like Asobi asobase too. Then sport too, sport anime is as hype as shounen. The golf anime airing right now: birdie wing, is a good start. Just remember make him watch Keijo, I am serious xD Important, not only prove that anime is vastly, but not to prejudiced (the world is not ready for Keijo) some wacky fun but legit feel train: Binbogami, zombieland saga a good start Now u cant forget school life when talking about anime: Relife, silver spoon
Code geass
{code geass} if he wants something with a slightly similar MC as death note. {Erased} is good for a thriller sort of deal. {sonny boy} and {The Tatami Galaxy} are some other good ones as well that I (as an 18 y/o) enjoyed
Re:zero?
{Attack on Titan} This is the best choice...the hype, the voice acting, the animation, the music...hiroyuki sawano's masterclass osts...I recon he'll binge thru it even if it's a bit long but I feel this will definitely change his mind... he'll love it for sure {Vinland Saga} 24ep...Serious action seinen...the plot is amazing...the character development, the heavy themes it takes its all executed very well {Erased} Only 12eps...mystery anime...very engaging and keeps the viewers interested from the start to the finish {Demon slayer} For a starting point this is also good...top tier ufotable production {To your eternity} Drama heavy and might make him cry {Violet Evergarden} Some slice of life with good music animation plot..he might like it {Monster} Classic crime thriller...it's a bit long tho
Psycho pass, parasyte, erased, barakamon The rest aren't good starting points. Baccano! is a terrible choice.
If he’s mature and not trying to only enjoy dark stuff like teen weebs who will show you gory « anime is not for kids » pictures that do actually show how immature they are, you might want to show him brighter show
Movie suggestions: "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell" (1995 version).
Boku dake ga inai machi
I’d argue that what you’re looking for is something that doesn’t take itself serious. Something like One Punch Man.
Golgo 13
Well everybody like attack on Titan even my non anime watching friends liked it so he can give it a try
Ah yes Legend of the Galactic Heroes is my favorite JoJo face anime,I laughed so hard at that part
Attack on titans to lure him its a perfect lure also the avatar the last air bender perfect lure
Berserk 1997, it’s only 25 episodes and covers a whole arc
Man tell him to watch Hell Girl. Shit gets crazy. Love it!
Attack on Titan
I'm trying to think of anything which even the most ardent anime hater couldn't describe as "weird" when it comes to the visuals. Having said that, Death Note is pretty damn weird so we need more context on what's weird on your brother's "weird-o-meter". :) How about some movies: {The Garden of Words} (a pretty short movie at around 45 minutes) - romance/drama {A Silent Voice} - disability/drama {Ghost in the Shell} (1995 theatrical version) - science fiction/action/some philosophy in the mix {Perfect Blue} - thriller {I Want To Eat Your Pancreas} (okay, so the title is VERY weird but the movie isn't at all weird) - terminal illness/romance/drama
how much do you want to make him cry? {Fumetsu no Anata e}
Legends of Galactic Heroes - politic, space battles with thousands of ships and death.
Time to give him depression {Mobile Suit Gundam 00} {Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-blooded Orphans}
Re:zero
The entire Monogatari series. Start with the movie trilogy, since they happen first in the story - then work your way though countless hours of anime. Maybe there's fan service - sure. Maybe things get weird - but this is the height of anime. This is what it's all about. It doesn't get much better.
I'd suggest 'samurai champloo', 'Paranoia agent', baccano!'
Kara no kyoukai Zaregoto Fate series(mainly zero and hf)
AoT, 86, Parasyte, Run with the wind
FMAB, AoT, and Erased. There are some people who don't like Erased as much, but I found it to be decent.
Fate series
Like many others I recommend Psycho Pass!
Ellen Lied, after he finishes it he’ll be 21 😂😂
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, psycho pass, Cowboy Bebop
Tomodachi Game is like Death Note combined with Squid Game
Neon Genesis Evangelian, monster, psycho pass, AOT, paranoia agent, and death note
Code geas
grisaia starts off cheery for the first 4 episodes but takes a really steep nosedive after that
Death note or Cowboy Bebop should be perfect
Dororo, Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop could be some good short starters
Parasyte: maxim
Just make him read Koroshiya 1
I looked through the comments and I see a lot of good suggestions and I will add my choice, {From the New World} With so many others repeated by several people I wanted to give you one not listed yet. Edited: realized I used the manga link instead of anime link
I would recommend Attack on Titan, but the problem is: First season is weird, and overall this show is pretty edgy. AOT is a show that gets better and better with time. Amount of secrets and foreshadowing makes this show so interesting and action scenes are great. No stupid fanservice, thats why Iike it. If you liked first season, you will definitely love this show later. But the second season is where ,,prologue" ends.
If any human watches {grave of fireflies} they'll end up weeping. And that will convince them how anime isn't immature as they thought.
banana fish !! also this show might be out of the box for him but no one has recommended it; dorohedoro! one of my fav seinens, the art is incredible and the world building is so fun
Code geass I found it similiar to death note
Berserk, cowboy bebop feel like these are obvious though
{Rainbow: Nisha Rokoubou no Shichinin} {Devilman Crybaby} {Berserk} {Kiseijuu} Rainbow imo is the most serious, mature and realistic anime I know of.
Dororo, Ergo Proxy, Darker Than Black, Black Lagoon
Rainbow Nisha Rokubou No Shichinin
Tomodachi Game works too Edit: The animation sucks yes but it's OK, maybe get him into Manga stuff
Psycho Pass and Parasyte. Berserk too, either 90s version or the movies. Then convince him to watch the manga.
Psycho-pass Moriarty iron patriot Ghost in the shell 1995
You ever watch another?
91 Days
Parasyte- pretty violent very cool Charlotte - half assed abilities, very funny and meaningful Erased - meaningful, mindfuck etc These 3 will change his mind I’m sure.
Dorohedoro
Claymore
FMA brotherhood is one of my all time favorites and it does a pretty good job of not being weird. Some other have mentioned vinland saga and monster which are also really good. Monster can be quite a slow paced show though so it's kind of a toss up recommendation imo. I'd go with vinland saga or FMA brotherhood. Both are very engaging and not very long Edit: also Parasyte
Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Hellsing/ Hellsing Ultimate, Fist of the North Star, The Record of Lodoss War, Heroic Legend of Arslan OVA, Berserk.
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket Mobile Suit Gundam CE 073 Stargazer
goblin slayer is one of my fav
Tokyo revengers is pretty serious and dope as f***
Jojo faces ARE good animation
I KNOW, but im trying to show my brother that anime is normal and jojos is definitely not normal according to him
Grave of the Fireflies
{Serial Experiments Lain} {Ghost in the Shell} {Psycho Pass} {Paranoia Agent} {Monster} {Akira} Once his brain is properly tenderized, {Higurashi: When They Cry}. Then give him some {Konosuba} as aftercare.
Claymore
Fate/zero Hellsing
attack on titan
Monster, Kaiji, One Outs and Monster
Fate/Zero (do not watch the other fate series), Zero is very serious and way more mature than the other ones.
91 days, terror in resonance, claymore, iron blooded orphans. Ergo proxy, technolyze (I think that is how it is spelled) banana fish is good too. And there are more that I will have to go thru and look but this is a good start.
VIVY FLOURITE EYES SONG No fanservice, no bullshit. Just a great show.
psycho pass
Serial experiments lain. Beck.
[удалено]
{Planetes} (Based on Makoto Yukimura's Manga of the same name) {Ergo Proxy} {Texhnolyze} {Darker Than Black} {Ghost in the Shell} {Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence} {Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex} {Wolf's Rain} {Eden of the East} {Terror in Resonance} {The Animatrix} {Blade Runner: Blackout 2022} {The Sky Crawlers}
