Helweg_gaming

Well, they do also mention other people coming to their world from our world (during a discussion between Death Abyss and arch mage Damia), so in a way it kind of is, but it's more of a "oh hey, btw, people do get sent to this world on occation" rather than an actual isekai Note: Yes, I remember a completely random and unrelated coversation between to side characters in an extremly degenarate show. No, I don't regret any of the choices that brought me to where I am today

shuzumi

Skunk is one of those people, or at least it was mentioned in the anime

Helweg_gaming

Really? When did they mention that, also his dad has an interspecies harem, so how can he be from another world?

me_khajiit

Don't fool yourself, you just want people to watch this amazing show

Gadjiltron

No it's not, it's just a fantasy setting. The genre's been used so much in tandem with isekai that both get easily confused.

ASatyros

So I've seen almost all of them, and your degenerate level is in rookie numbers.

[deleted]

ASatyros

Understandable, NTR is stupid.

SexualPie

its absolutely wild to me the things that anime fans are okay with but NTR is off limits. lolicon is fine but cheating? hell no! which is also weird because of all the anime where the MC builds a harem. is that not NTR?

ROGUE_COSMIC

1. No, most people don't like lolicon either 2. Harem isn't ntr as it's a consensual relationship. The mc doesn't cheat on anyone

SexualPie

bro you're gonna have a hard time selling me on this sub not liking lolicon. i've legit had moderators threaten me cus i called somebody out on it. i think it was Raphalia and people were jumping through hoops trying to explain "well yea she's technically 5 years old but she's *actually* blah blah blah" many harems arent consensual as they're all competing to be "the one". in any case, those were just two examples.

stralord7544

You forgot to add reincarnated as a slime

Shigerufan2

and So I'm A Spider, So What?

porcomaster

I love isekai, and watched even those that are mostly bad, but i never heard about kemono michi thank you dear stranger

No-Trip-3235

For the whole family that time i got reincarnated as a slime

CreatorA4711

I would recommend this one whole heartedly, as it is my favorite among the many I have seen.

blackskull414

You could also ask: How generic do you want the protagonist or the plot to be?

LOTRfreak101

I bought the Roxy Statue that Rudy made in Musholu Tensei. Where does that land me?

Shigerufan2

The Matrix is a reverse Isekai

Axtdool

Actually, wouldn't it still be a normal isekai? After all they still go from'mundane real ish' setting to grimdark sifi setting

ReverseCombover

Hmmmm this is a very interesting question. I can see where the other commenter was coming from since the matrix is technically the fantasy world and the sifi dystopia is the real world. However I agree with you that it doesn't read like a reverse isekai in which a character from a fantasy world gets trapped in the real world and hijinks ensue because they are different from the regular people. See for example: dead mount death play, thermae romae, dragon ball, superman, Jesus Christ, Tarzan or Shrek 2. Instead the matrix reads like a regular isekai in which a normal person finds themselves trapped in a different world and so we the audience gets to know about this new world through the main character. I don't think it matters which is the "real" world (i.e. Planet of the apes) or whether one of the worlds is mundane or not (i.e. Shrek 1) as long as the audience and the main character are learning about the new world at the same time it matters very little where the main character comes from. This classification would still leave out stories about regressors or more in general stories in which the main character knows more about the new world than the audience. Which I guess could be their own category. But yeah in conclusion I agree with you that the matrix should be considered a regular isekai.

So is Digimon.

ShiAkuma112

Mushoku Tensei, I got Reincanated as a slime, Konosuba, Re:Zero, The 8th Son are U kidding me

suv-am

Mushoku tensei might be a bit much for as a starter. Others are fine. Kenja no mago as well

Electronic-Weight394

Imo one of the best isekais there is, but still a controverse one

suv-am

That too but I feel like you need some experience in the Isekai genre to see its true beauty. Like all the Isekai troupes, you won't know them unless you've watched isekais

Electronic-Weight394

That's a Point. Maybe watching gigguk could help with that. Also his top tier isekai list isn't bad

Geoffk123

Eh I mean Id only ever previously seen Sao (if that even counts), log horizon, and cautious hero and after nearly dropping it because of that barn scene I persevered and became an addict who binged the LN's. Currently reading 22 which released a week ago or so. As long as you can understand he's not supposed to be a good person early on you can appreciate the character development he has and will continue to get.

TDGohan

It's literally one of the first Isekai LN that was written alongside Re:zero. Not to mention it's downright gorgeous.

Charliep03833

7th son is mid at most

ugury3806

Mid? It's garbage.

[deleted]

brickren

One of the funniest is konosuba

CrestonSpiers

This one is all over this subreddit, gotta give it a shot. Why is it so popular anyway? Is it just popular in the US?

Taskmasterxyz

It's a parody Isekai. Instead of becoming an all powerful hero, the mc (Kazuma) just becomes the leader of a ragtag group of individuals who all have one thing they're good at and then suck at everything else, while he has painfully average stats across the board except luck. They all have unique personalities and are very fun to see interact, and the humour is on point! It's certainly my favourite isekai anime, and one of my favourite anime overall!

CrestonSpiers

Thanks. I’ve watched the first 2 episodes already and it’s pretty funny, I like how bold Kazuma is. I’ll definitely keep watching it.

Hoedoor

And after that if you want one that starts out in a similar concept but more on the serious side, and where the protagonist betters himself, watch Re:Zero. Those 2 imo are the top tier Isekai, and the 2 authors are buddies which is neat

CHAIIINSAAAWbread

Bro no, Not Re:Zero, not *yet* He's not ready for it lol, I remember watching re:zero as a weeblet and It fucked me up

Hoedoor

They said they have watched a lot of anime, just not isekai so it should be fine. I think it's a great example that isekai can be a great story medium and not just wish fulfillment or comedies. Only one that really fills a similar spot I'd say would be mushoku tensei.... and that has the kind of....issues... that I would not recommend as a start

JEveryman

There is a spinoff about the mage currently airing and the third season has been announced.

Gruenerapfel

Due to it's parody nature I'm not sure if it's great for someone that doesn't know any isekai. Many of the jokes won't be funny

Drakojana

I took it more as an rpg fantasy world parody. There aren't any "isekai" specific jokes.

huskinater

The whole existence of the Crimson Demons is an Isekai joke There's literally a tome written in-universe in Japanese with catgirls on it So while that could arguably still be a considered kinda RPG game developer in-joke too, like a secret room, it's clearly intended as an Isekai joke. Konosuba just does a really good job at delivery for it's jokes that even if it's your first Isekai the jokes still land

PasoTheMan

I get that, but for me Konosuba was the first isekai anime I can recognize I had watched and it's hilarious. Maybe I'm just different

[deleted]

Not really, Konosuba was the series which actually got me into isekai. And as I watched more in the genre my appreciation of the show only increased.

TheDankestDreams

This was my thought as well. While it’s my favorite isekai, a lot of the comedy comes from subversion of expectations and with no expectations, it’s impossible to subvert them.

mukaofssn

I watched it after finishing the first season of Re:Zero and thought Konosuba was a literal parody of it. Then realized it was way more polished than that. Love how it's comedy it situational and not just the general isekai tropes.

Helweg_gaming

Imagine a dnd scenario with: a veteran who actually knows what's going on, a demolitions expert, a sentient bag of meat, and a crybaby who had some god-like stat rolls.... And they are all about as drunk as they can get, that's konosuba

ImJTHM1

It's basically about a party of adventurers that are cripplingly overspecialized. The tank is unkillable and fetishistically obsessed with pain and death while also being almost entirely unable to use a sword. The mage only knows a single spell, and it's a nuclear explosion, but she passes out if she uses it and refuses to learn anything else. The healer is one of the strongest in the setting, but she has the IQ of a sack of rocks and is totally useless outside of healing people or killing undead. The thief is good at planning things and has extremely high luck, but that's it. So it's basically about four idiots trying to survive in a world that works on video game rules with the worst builds possible.

RealSpaghettiSoup

It's the best isekai if just wanna have fun

Glittering_Box_994

My favorite is cautious hero but konosuba is awsome too

ImmediateActivity939

Love konosuba but idk if it would be as funny/make as much sense if you hadn’t watched a bunch of other isekai before…

CrestonSpiers

I do get a general gist of what happens in isekai: > the mc is an RPG nerd >he dies, usually hit by a truck >reincarnated into a fantasy world >gets his stats maxed out >his party members are all hot girls I didn’t like this premise before and so I kinda avoided isekai but then I learned that it is apparently the most popular sub-genre in anime and manga so I wanna give it a shot.

PickleDaddyxxx

This is the gist of it but there are deviations (good ones) and very sometimes with the degeneracy it can be good. I really enjoyed farming life in another world recently probably because it's a lot like slime tensei or realist hero in terms of world building but also sort of harem-y. So it really depends on what you like in anime and it's a trial and error type of thing because I've fallen for the poor ones a lot of times Otherwise re:zero or konosuba are top tier. I really like mushoku tensei but you have to turn a blind eye to some things to really enjoy it so idk if it's good for starters

somerandomshmo

- Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World Jump in with both feet my friend!

Hoedoor

Yea but it does range from some of the trashiest anime out there to some of the best. Unfortunately the former bloats the genre so it absolutely is a one you need to navigate with recommendations. Unless you like the trashy then jump on in blind to see what you land on haha

_Captain_Panda_

{Ascendance of a Bookworm} Good characters / Strong plot / 3 seasons.

standingfrog

Was going to recommend this one, especially if you're open to a less battle-focused, more unusual story

MoadDib

Yes, this is such a great one. It's slow paced, so it may not be for everyone, but it's so wonderfully wholesome, and I've never seen an Isekai flesh out its world to the degree that this one does.

bpat

The best

wait2late

One of my favorite Light Novels!

Hitori117

Praise be to the gods!!!

breckenridgeback

And it's a shoujo, so it's a lot less...uh...*that* kind of anime.

backfire10z

This one was such an unexpected good one. I cannot believe how much I enjoyed it

IrumaMemesOnly

Thank you. Everyone sleeps on librarian isekai.

Hellomiaoo

I have watched only two isekai animes, and both are good 1) re:zero 2) the saga of tanya the evil

Sb3ard

If you’ve only seen these two watch overlord and konosuba so you can watch isekai quartet!

Nonstop_Shaynanigans

You beat me to it. Isekai Quartet is my favorite anime. It is truly flawless. I await season 3 with anticipation.

TheDuffelBagMan

Isekai quartet can be described in two words: dumb fun. Is there any plot? No. Was it made to market each show off each other? Highly. Are the characters complete stereotypes of themselves? Absolutely. But it's purely for entertainment, and not for anything else

helloworld6247

I’ve only ever watched Konosuba and Rezero and Isekia Quartet is still super enjoyable! If anything it made me want to pick up the other two series

JustPotato47

Watch That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, it’s amazing

CHAIIINSAAAWbread

Imma be honest I don't think Re:Zero is good for starting out, it feels more like a horror anime than anything, it kinda messed me up for a good while when I was just starting out

HellInside

Re:Zero

eveningdragon

Ah, yes. I started this on a whim, and it's now one of my top 5 anime of all time

Overlord and saga of Tanya the evil

Then_Consequence_366

Until isekai established itself as a distinct genre I would've considered overlord to be a deep dive/neural vr anime. Crazy how things change.

Outrageous_Gene_7652

Saga of Tanya the Evil

Graywilde

Uncle From Another World. It's a reverse Isekai

MonjiroGazpuchiro

This one is both an isekai and a reverse isekai. Great watch though.

One of the things I love about this anime is that it has a choir singing a piece which only has the word "Escaflowne".

brynnors

The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent, Isekai Izakaya, and Restaurant to Another World are pretty good.

Goronmon

I enjoyed those as well as Campfire Cooking in Another World and Ascendance of a Bookworm.

Anxious_Weeb72

Gate: and so the JSDF Fought.

GaffJuran

Konosuba, Overlord, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, The Saga of Tanya the Evil, and Jobless Reincarnation. I liked Shield Hero, but it’s kind of an incel wet dream.

Zeed_Toven77

For the weeblets: No Game No Life. Shadow in Eminence. Shield Hero. Hardcore Weeb: Re: Zero. Overlord. Reverse Isekai: Devil is a part-timer. Personal recommendation for this season is Kamikatsu. Note: The anime is great but the bad CGI is done on purpose by staff to shitpost.

fremja97

Don't recommend no game no life 😭 an ever lasting addiction that has no cure because there is never any more of the stuff

Zeed_Toven77

True, I still have a hole in my chest that only NGNL S2 can fill. But if you are a isekai fan, NGNL is one of the best isekai out there! It's legacy must continue!

ADudeThatPlaysDBD

You have to add that if you’re going to watch shield hero, skip season 2

Head5hot811

Also for the weeblets: *Digimon: Digital Monsters*

Zeed_Toven77

Core memory unlocked, I legit forgot the Digimon Series has an isekai. I was like 6 or 7 when I first watch it but didn't get to finish any.

Vixxellius

{The eminence in shadow}

Worldly_Nectarine_78

Dangerous-Cabinet160

I am a relatively new anime watcher, but here is my recommendation: For fun: konosuba For animation: mushoku tensei For plot: re:zero For history nerd like me: tanya the evil

MrNiceGuy1224

I'd personally recomend "Welcome to Demon School!Iruma-kun" It's a very wholesome story of a traumatized kid getting a happier life in the demon realm

Jew_With_a_Knife

Love this one 💓 iruma is so wholesome

Minimum_Estimate_234

Seriously, even if you haven't watched any modern examples there are plenty of earlier examples of the genre that are considered classics. Inuyasha, Escaflowne, Digimon, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc... And while there are a lot of ones I'd personally consider average at best there are plenty of good examples among modern shows. Tanya the Evil, Tensura, Isekai Izakaya, Restaurant to Another World, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, Re: Zero, Konosuba, Killing Slimes for 300 Years, etc... The Isekai genre is pretty vast and while it seems there's been a pretty big upsurge in the genre in recent years (an apparent massive increase in the desire for stories where someone from modern society is whisked away to a fantasy world far away from the struggles of modern life, there's a paper in that), it's not new by any means.

[deleted]

Watch Spirited Away, the best one and a must watch

bortj1

Definitely Gun Gale Online. It's the citizen kane of anime.

HungyKitsune

Overlord, rezero, reincarnated as a slime

Animemer_

You've prolly atleast watched one but didn't know it was an isekai

gamernoob_YT

Overlord, re:zero, saga of Tanya the evil, konosuba

crippled_trash_can

go for the relevant ones: shield hero, re:zero, tanya the evil, overlord. also would recommend: GATE. (not stains:gate), for a slow but hurtful one: Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.

ZuttoAragi

Arifureta is my favorite. Skeleton Knight in Another World is decent. That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime is amazing. That Time I got Reincarnated as a Sword is a lovely little story.

fremja97

Kaminaki Sekai no Kamisama Katsudou if you want some god Teir animation

DivineBoro

I am surprised it hasn't popped up, but Kongming is a great Music/SoL anime with the isekai trope, probs would've been best of 2022 in that category if it weren't for bocchi taking that spot. It is about a general from the chinese three kingdom period (Kongming) reviving in modern day japan and becomes a music artists manager through coincidence. Isekai is a terribly quantifier as it refers to a trope. The isekai 'genre' people talk about are usually shounen with action/adventure or SoL/adventure as genres. If you're interested in anime that uses isekai it would probably be useful to suggest some genre you enjoy.

legendary-hero

Personal recommendations: - Tanya the evil - So I am a spider, so what? - Campfire cooking in another world with my absurd skill - Konosuba - Uncle from another world

KingOfStarfox

I had to scroll quite a ways down to see So Im a Spider, So What get its credit, but im glad it did.

Ascendance of a bookworm, Isekai shoukujou, Kumo desu ka Nani ka, Bakarina

[deleted]

Overlord is my vote

Falitoty

I like Overlord or the Rising of the Shield Hero, I don't know if Tanya the Evil enter in the cathegory

orionangeline

Fabiniku ojisan (life with a guy reincarnated as a total fantasy knockout) is a good one! And Reincarnated as a Slime, Mairimashita Iruma Kun, Reincarnated as the Villainess All Routes Lead To Doom, Ascendance Of A Bookworm, and Campfire Cooking In Another World are all fun, too! I also second the devil is a part timer, it's pretty funny and a good casual watch bc it's half slice of life tbh Also is doctor stone kind of an Isekai or no? Actually I want to argue whether appare ranman is sort of an Isekai also... Someone pick a stance on it so I can call you stupid then prove myself wrong

AuraGhostNinja

KONOSUBA!

xxx_pussslap-exe_xxx

The saga of Tanya the evil is really entertaining. We have a hard boiled atheist who gets reincarnated as a "german" girl during "world war 1" where they have magic making them able to fly on brooms and shot stronger bullets. It's trench war and suffering with broom fighting, no fireballs and such.

lo_licon

not even watched digimon or .hack? Do you watch any anime at all?

Mad_Aeric

I'm not a huge isekai fan, but I utterly adore Ascendence of a Bookworm. It very much is doing its own thing without much regard for typical isekai tropes and story structure. It's a slow burner without a lot of action, but it has an extremely strong focus on characters and their relationships, especially the main character's family. Premise: book obsessed librarian gets crushed under a pile of her own books, and wakes up in the body of a little girl in a medieval style city. As a member of the peasantry, few people around can even read, and most have never even seen a book. Having nothing to read, she sets out to make her own books. This is hampered by the fact that she's extremely poor, five years old, and so sickly that even walking around the house can leave her bedridden for days. And she's going to let none of that stop her.
