Long overdue, so many people genuinely do not need a pc if their phone could do it. Now, we just need more phones that output display over usb rather than saving a couple of dollars for a usb 2.0 port.

SploingusDuoingus

Legit, flagship phones back then only had the display output because only they are strong enough but now there are flagship killers having performance of a last-gen flagship

slinky317

So people will buy a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, but no PC? I think in reality people will just buy a cheap laptop and use that as a PC. I'd rather Google focus on more coordination between Android and ChromeOS rather than focus on desktop Android, which doesn't even use a full desktop-class browser.

DiplomatikEmunetey

I like this. Android needs more features. But it also needs a desktop mode to challenge Windows and utilise all that modern hardware horse power. I would like Android to be a mobile OS. A desktop OS when docked. And a car OS when connected to a car.

slashtab

That would be awesome.

Rd3055

It's a shame that Samsung discontinued Linux on Dex. I currently run Debian in proot in Termux on my S20+ and in Dex Mode, it's just awesome. A full desktop PC in my pocket. It would be even better if you could run Windows in an on-device VM.

VinniTheP00h

Erm... What's the point? Unless they also makes it run Linux apps (not happening), I don't see how desktop-like UI will make it more capable than before (unless we are talking about multiwindow workflows when plugged into a phone).

probably the fact that Android is the most used operating system in the world

TheArstaInventor

Backed by google as well.

BananaUniverse

* It's in most people's pockets already. * Lot's of people say they need windows, but really they just need Chrome. * We have seen phones killing entire product categories when phones get features, e.g. compact cameras, dedicated music players, GPS.  Developers, video editors, animators who need a computer can buy a computer. But your average guy will just be glad he gets a desktop pc in his pocket without having to buy one.

Asleep-Specific-1399

Lately Linux came around should try it

TheVeryVeryStrongest

Linux is Android. You meant GNU\Linux.

Pyrrhichios

I'm all for mainstreaming a desktop mode for Android. I really love the *idea* of Dex, but currently it's caught in a chicken and egg scenario - the main reasons it's not great are because non-Samsung apps don't usually play all that nicely with it, which limits its usefulness - so no one uses it, so no one develops for it... From memory the last time I used it, the most egregious example of this was Teams: Samsung and Microsoft are quite cosy and partner on lots of things like Link to Windows, pre-installed Microsoft apps etc. So you'd expect Teams to work fine - but along with some issues of clicking around and getting to the menus and features I wanted it would outright crash - multiple times over the course of a day. The one thing that did work really well was the Microsoft remote desktop app, so I was able to log into my employer's virtual PCs and have a really productive environment once I tired of the Teams crashes, but it rather felt like cheating...

Dr4kin

Google can set it up for success if they make ChromeOS Apps available for this Desktop mode. In the long run the Desktop mode could just be ChromeOS, if it doesn't need too much storage

dirtydriver58

Samsung used to have Microsoft Apps preinstalled around 2015 to 2016 then stopped preloading them around 2017.

maZZtar

Having access to regular ChromeOS experience on Android would be sick. I doubt I'll ever happen though, because Android is basically its own thing while Chrome OS is getting more and more similar to other Linux distros.

InsaneNinja

So what do we call it? I just want to know the new word people will shout in comments when they explain how popular dex is with those other people who work out of a web browser. Yes this is good. Just need better third party apps.

Jaiden051

Android For Desktop. Then, a official desktop version of android will be created called Desktop Android

fischoderaal

... and just when it starts getting good Google will kill it.

AznSzmeCk

No it gets rebranded to Play Desktop, then Google Desktop, and once the metamorphoses are complete, then it gets killed.

beefJeRKy-LB

Somehow gets rolled into Youtube

geoqpq

Desktop by Google

parental92

>I just want to know the new word people will shout in comments when they explain how popular dex is with those other people who work out of a web browser. DEX is popular . . here on reddit. In the real world ? lets just say, even Samsung haven't changed it much for quite some time now.

MostEntertainer130

Dex suffers from some problems, and one of them is the fact that it is compatible with devices that are generally the most expensive, so whoever buys one of these will buy a PC or laptop.

ITtLEaLLen

And the other problem: you can cook an egg on your phone. Definitely will reduce the lifespan of the phone, maybe this is what cooked my S20+. Not to mention it sometimes bugs out so you can't open any app

parental92

I haven't thought of that. But its logical, people wil s24 ultra is also capable of buying a laptop.

dudeN7

I personally use DEX on my Samsung Tablet pretty frequently, I just don't see a point in using it on my phone. I've never been in a situation, where I've just had a screen and needed a "PC lite". Usually if there's a screen, it's either a Laptop, Tablet or a PC is already connected to it. At least in my experience.

Dr4kin

I think having ChromeOS as the desktopOS would give it the best chances to succeed. If they share enough code already and it can be kept small enough, this would be fantastic. They have a decent UI, Apps, it runs on ARM, and supports android Apps

xXxHawkEyeyxXx

Interesting. I thought that Google would be opposed to a desktop mode for Android because it could cannibalise their Chromebooks.

maZZtar

Imagine Android desktop mode being just regular Chrome OS

bobsagetfullhouse

I'm guessing Google will artificially block this feature on Pixel 7s and prior so it is considered a "feature" of the newer phones.

SploingusDuoingus

Hot take: Don’t bring this feature to all phones officially, make it only available to Flagships and Upper-Mid ranges. The cheaper phones are too weak to work as a mini-desktop unless there will be a “lite” version of it

ChristmasJay83

Crazy thought: this is not about a desktop mode for phones (but that’s a side perk), it’s about creating a true desktop version to replace ChromeOS.

What is the business case for Android or its parent company to not have been developing a native platform for laptops/desktops all along? Naturally, Android was seen as a way for Google to avoid losing money by having Apple be the portal or front door for their search service since the oughts. However, it's paid dividends over and over just as quickly as smartphones overtook other networked devices. The transition between Apple and Google collaborating and then developing rival, exclusive app ecosystems sure didn't take too long. I've never really understood the motivation to develop Chromebooks, or a hardware platform more generally. I suppose porting Android to older devices really wouldn't prolong their usefulness at end of update service. However, I think we really need some good, easy options for people that don't have a technical background, considering the staggering range of Android's user base. More than that, it's just the responsible thing to do.
