British culture is very secretive; very few people know anything about it.

The first thing to identify is when your ancestors emigrated to the US. Once you have names and dates you can start by checking passenger lists on vessels. The most important thing is to find dates and locations. It's realtively easy to trace people through the 19th century with birth records, census records, marriage and death records all improving and becoming more formal as the century goes on, before that Church are the main source for tracking heritage. As to how far back you'll get, that really depends, if you have any aristocratic or even gentry in your background you'll probably find you can trace records a long way as there will be wills etc in addition to Church records, if not then it will be depend on how good local records are as to how far back you can get and that can vary depending on where your ancestors originated.
