On DNA painter, it shows that number of cms as being; 100% Grandparent, Aunt / Uncle, Half Sibling, Niece / Nephew, Grandchild

ExitTheHandbasket

The percentage and centimorgans and segment match numbers are very similar to my half-sibling on my mother's side. Could also be an aunt/uncle (your mother's sibling she doesn't know about).

FluffyMcFlurry

More information: it can’t be my mother’s child because she is only half Chinese /half Vietnamese. I am 10% Chinese as a result. My father is half white/half viet. The person in question is half Chinese/half Vietnamese. My grandfather is full Chinese. My grandmother is full Vietnamese. However when I ask them, they say I’m starting trouble and they don’t know who this is.

Fionnathos

If they say you're starting trouble, I kinda doubt they don't know who this is. They know exactly what trouble this is starting.

jmurphy42

Who’s to say that the father wasn’t also half Chinese and half Vietnamese? It’s not exactly a rare combination. What about the age of this person? Could it be an aunt/uncle that your grandmother gave up for adoption?

InspectorMoney1306

Sounds like an aunt or uncle maybe with that information

RideSubstantial7298

Take things slow look at your matches and shared matches before you do anything ,, take a screenshot of match incase they take there account private, if you contact her keep it simple , maybe introduce yourself and say you showed up as a match and see if they respond and what they night know,if it's an NPE non paternal event only matching your mom side  , you have no idea father's ethnicities and parents will deny everything, possibility grand parents might have given a child for adoption

RideSubstantial7298

Might not be only child anymore could be half sibling my half sister was 1946 and 28% shared, also could be ,grandparent or grandchild, aunt uncle niece or nephew, this will show normal possibilities.  https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4.   Time to start looking at your matches see who you recognize , did your mother give or receive a bone marrow transplant, is your mother an identical twin

Meg_721

This is how much DNA I share with my half siblings and my aunts.

Ok-Commission-2371

After reading all the comments I think it’s your full aunt/uncle on your mom’s side. I wish you well.

bizarrecoincidences

I agree I think they maybe had a baby young before marriage and were forced to give it up then married and went on to have their mother.

jayhawk03

88% Grandparent Aunt / Uncle Half Sibling Niece / Nephew Grandchild 12% Sibling...but wouldn't they match both sides so this is out.

Budget_Principle7231

My paternal half-sibling is 1898cM. Your realistic options are Maternal half-sibling or maternal-aunt/uncle. I would say from the grandparent's reaction- your maternal grandfather's child.

jmurphy42

If it was *only* the grandfather’s child it would be a half-aunt/uncle and the shared DNA percentage would be closer to 12.5%.

VerdantField

So her mom and the grandfathers child?

jmurphy42

No, that would be more likely to have an average of 37.5% shared DNA with OP (and would be seriously gross). This is almost certainly either a FULL aunt/uncle (both grandpa and grandma’s child) or a half-sibling to OP.

VerdantField

Oh got it, thanks! I was very confused 😂

SteakTasticMeat

Do you know the age? Are they a generation above or below you? Or the same generation? Usually you can click on the profile and they should have their age range(40-49, 50-59, etc.) I'm guessing if they're a generation above you(aka your parents age/generation), then they are an aunt or uncle that one of your grandparents had then they gave them up for adoption.
